Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. i have just watched the entire video of your journey to complete your dream cabin. I cannot tell you how proud and amazed at your determination, hard work and the love between you two in completing your journey. I'm a 67 year old woman who was in the construction industry for about 40 years. Not in the doing, but the managing of the projects from start to finish. I'm retired now and live in the Bahamas with my husband (who is still in the construction industry). He is a master carpenter. I think what you have accomplished is amazing! I can't do much these days because of mobility issues, but am in awe of how hard you have worked and what an amazing job you did. Notwithstanding all the skills you now have, the experience to tackle the more complex parts of construction, I think one of the biggest achievements is you did it all without serious injury. Thank you for not cheaping out on anything and make it actually like a regular home, tons of people move to "Cabin" only to take shit in the outhouse and so much more that i can't imagine ever doing. This was truly a life anyone can live moving from cities.
It would be nice to get prices of things especially major improvements like the well install. It's amazing all of the work you've both completed but if you're sharing this, a general price would be helpful for others interested in doing the same. Just a thought.

The very first video we watched together was of the two of you arriving at the cabin for the first time. We were screen sharing over zoom since we were long distance. Today as you posted this video of a completed, beautiful, off grid home, we are snuggled up watching together with our visa approved, no long distance (finally!). TH-cam is their career.. along with their merch. And the property itself only cost 50k.. anything they pit into it with loans will be made right back and then some. Probsbly alresdy more than doubled what they put into it.. and they also have Probsbly saved a ton just from doing so much of the work themselves

I can’t look at the cabin knowing there is an old roof under there.
Very common for metal roofs to be put over old ones. As long as everything is structurally sound, the metal roof will last for decades!
@@andrewmassee849 Not like that, if the shingles are that bad it's always torn out, the plywood is inspected and if all is well then a membrane is installed, after that the 1x2s and finally the roof. Those shingles were beyond salvageable which deems them unfit and between bot of them with a scraper it would've taken 1 hour to scrape those shingles off. Now if the shingles were in ok shape then yes, there would be no problems. In the roofing industry you'd be fired for that immediately because if the shingles are that bad then they hide something else underneath and more so being in a climate where it snows. Also from the condensation created from within the cabin and all the heat rising, it will get trapped in between the plywood, the shingles and the metal roof, the sun will bake the shingles because of all the radiated heat and the shingles will start to peel off even more. Now let's say water starts creeping in somehow, what's stopping it from seeping into the plywood? The old useless shingles? That's exactly why a membrane is put in place. You can cut corners in certain areas but the roof is definitely not one of them. I hope they revist the roof some day.
