@@wildsouloverlanding I’ve been traveling through Mexico for years and even spent time there during a deployment. I speak the language fluently (African American male), and unfortunately, that’s just how Mexico can be-you always have to stay sharp and aware of your surroundings. Driving a nice Land Rover will definitely make you stand out as a foreigner and a potential target. I drive a 2006 Jeep Wrangler with a similar overlanding setup to yours. While I haven’t been robbed, I have definitely been bribed before. I believe not speaking the language makes you more vulnerable to these types of situations. I’m glad you’re safe! There’s something about the ‘wild west’ vibe of traveling through Mexico that I love, but it’s definitely not for everyone. Regarding your phone not working, the reason for that is likely the need for a Mexican SIM card. Maybe you had one, but if not, that’s why your phone didn’t work. If you ever want to try traveling in Mexico again, just do your research and know the area you’re going into. Tijuana probably wasn’t the best place to cross, as it’s known for its debauchery. I hope you give Mexico another chance; it’s a beautiful country with wonderful people and rich culture.
Im hoping to hear the whole story, I live in Baja and what we recomend is to always get advice from locals on how to move around or what to do in certain scenarios. Glad you are ok!
I finally got time to watch this entire episode. Thank you for your humbleness and honesty. I feel the same way you do about not supporting a country that is so corrupt. If I were in the same situation I’d be mad as hell too. Unfortunately, most of the America’s is corrupt in one way or the other. Thank you for confirming this and cementing my decision not to take my family down there, ever. I really wish I was in a position to offer you a place to stay here in Washington state until you got back on your feet. You seem like a genuine person and it comes through in your videos. Good luck to you and getting your vehicle back to the UK. I hope you make it home safely. I know it’s hard to enjoy yourself when things are financially difficult, but there are plenty of free things to do throughout North America that don’t require money and you should be able to take your mind off of your struggles. There are some phenomenal public lands in central and eastern Wyoming that don’t cost a dime and are filled with epic views.
@@ExploringWithTheBz thank you so much 🙌 means a lot. I’ll be fine, already feel loads better. Over the next two videos I give all the info, the reason it’s two is because I only realised I was robbed a third time a week later
Love your commentary and filming. You have nailed the knack of engaging with the viewer. I dream of my old 1996 110 being as nice as your Land Rover! Hang in there and get over the set backs. The sun is still going to come up tomorrow and I hope that you will keep filming and do the other trips that you have talked of.
Thank you so much for sharing your reality. It must have been a really hard video to make at the time. Also hard when your on your own, with your own thoughts. Thank you for sharing the other side of overlanding. Not all epic views, sun and sand. I hope you are in a better place now. Try to love every moment good and bad. You will have incredible memories and experience to share. Take care my friend and stay focused on the wonders of your adventure. Much better than the 9-5😅 🙂🖐️🚐🌎
@@YYCSTRMN thank you. I understand most Mexicans are great, I met a few of them in my short time in Mexico. Watch the next video, found out later the military robbed me too
a day late and a dollar short, but maybe try checking with people who live nearby before going in. i'm in TX and i will likely NEVER visit Mexico again, even though i would LOVE to see the waterfalls and canyons and mountains, but especially the ruins. good luck, man, hope everything works out.
Lol it's not a bribe if they are doing it to you / you gain nothing, it's extortion, a bribe is for persuasion. Just feel glad you got out alive / a gang didn't rob your Land rover.
I also got bribed somewhere else. I also got robbed on the way out of Mexico AND then found out I was also robbed at a Military checkpoint so that's 3 times I was robbed in 48hrs! + a bribe. Yep totally agree and I've heard of others having their vehicle took off them at gun point
I got nicked by Mexican cops in Acapulco. Mexico has the potential to be a great nation and travel destination, if they could only find a way to root out the endemic corruption
I’ve spent a lot of time in both Baja and mainland Mexico. It’s the number one destination in the world for American expats. There are some bad apples for sure but if you do some research and know how to interact with them you can avoid a lot (though not all) of these “unnecessary taxes”. They think they’re dealing with a tourist who doesn’t want to waste any of their precious week of vacation and willing to purchase an easy way out - and they’re usually correct. If you show them you’ve got all the time in world and willing to “go to the station” to take care of things then 9 times out of 10 they’ll cut their losses and send you on your way. Toll roads are your friend as are dash cams (makes them shy). You won’t encounter this on the Toll roads. It’s certainly not an ideal situation but it’s also not unique to Mexico - it’s all of Latin America. If you’re going to do the Pan American you see this all the way from Mexico to Argentina.
@@scottmartin6139 thank you for taking the time to explain your view point. Much appreciated 🙌 I won’t be going back to Mexico not after hearing some of the stories I’ve now heard
I think you made a few blunders yourself there especially the TIP/Deposit in the "No Hassle Zone". It may have been prudent to do some research before you left the US side. Much of Mexico is less corrupt / safer than the border zones too.
A TIP is not required in Baja, it’s the free zone. An FMM (Visa) and car insurance are required but a TIP is not. If you were to take the ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan you would need a TIP for the mainland, which you can get at the Port in La Paz.
What a bunch of arseholes !! Hopefully you can stay in America for a bit longer and get your head together. Life really sucks at times and you have to deal with the lows and the high's . Every day is new beginning so keep you're head up mate and keep going, You are doing great and good things will come to you. 👍
I travel a TON. Online you will see nothing but praises regarding Mexico. I had very similar experiences. Endless corruption by people who have power. You couldn’t pay me to travel back through that place again.
I've spoke to loads of people now and heard of endless corruption and even people having their cars took off them at gunpoint - very recently 4 tourists where shot dead too
Showing us what most overlanders don't like to show. Thanks.
