Nope, nope, nope!! LOL. I don't do creepy AND I don't do lots of stairs, so not for me! I appreciate you as a content creator though, so I watched this! ;) IF I went, I would have spent time reading all the comments in the visitors log, I think that's cool. How did you / Victor find out about this station? Oh, I really like the new introduction for this season. Keep it up! Thanks for sharing, as always!!!
"I'll be hanging down there in the comments". YOU'D BETTER REPLY. I'M EXPECTING A REPLY. Great soundtrack man, really brought out the creepiness of the place! Can't wait to visit the place firsthand at some point (albeit not alone, screw that haha). Jealous you got to hang out with Mr Frame of Travel himself!
Lol replies within a minute! There’s this guy who said he’d do all these biking videos and then... wait.. never mind lol Glad you enjoyed it that much. Sorry we ended up there without you~ Always more adventure around the corner through 😉
Ok. This station definitely warrants a revisit. Like who are these 22 passengers that keep this station open? And why exactly is the the tunnel so deep? I was half expecting the catbus to pull into the station and whisk you away to another dimension.
Apparently the tunnel is so deep cause it was originally built as an alternate route in 1931, tunnel construction improved the journey time between Niigata and Tokyo by 4 hours since trains no longer needed to go through the Usui Pass. It's pretty much cause that deeper rail line starts off lower at each ends and you don't want to be climbing steep grades with trains if you can avoid it, while the ground level station seems to be a more local line.
@@G1NZOU That's not the full story though. Both the surface and the underground tracks at this place are the 4 hour shortcuts. But the older one climbed a bit higher before tunneling through, hence it is still at surface level. The tunnel however is single track, and as train traffic grew they build a second newer tunnel that was lower down and don't have to climb as high as the old one. Both tracks serve the same line. The underground platform and track in the tunnel serve northbound trains. The surface platform and track serve southbound trains.
I actually visited this place as a school trip as a Japanese student. I can 100% relate with each comment you’ve made so far. There’s so much history behind this station, and despite how creepy it is, it’s sort of a treasure I would think.
Not sure if i would call it creepy since it was a fully functioning station, but it was definitely weird and strange. Old Japanese abandoned schools, railway stations and tunnels tend to be what i would term creepy
Lol wasn’t gonna call it creepy Till we went There’s something oddly silent and lie at the same time The way the dust flows through the air And the way it always seems like you ca hear a voice... most likely echoes of water, but it got pretty creepy pretty quick lol
Those 22 regular passengers must have legs of STEEL from all those stairs. Man I love semi or totally abandoned places. There will probably be many more in the next couple decades.
That was an awesome adventure indeed. You captured the atmosphere perfectly in your edit! Almost felt like I was already back in that creepy tunnel. And yes, it was creepy. The running water, the creaking of the pipes, and hushed sounds that reverberated and sounded like people whispering in the distance all mixed together in a cacophony of paranoia and dread. Then mixed with all the memories of Fatal Frame, Silent Hill, Metro 2033, The Last of Us, 28 Days Later, and more... ugh, yeah, I'm glad I didn't go alone.
I like these videos, they're not clickbait-y, they don't try and grab your attention all for the sake of views. They're real and they make me realise that this is what life really is like sometimes, some things just aren't as scary or spooky as you expect them to be, and that's ok! Instead of having that excited spooky feeling from watching this i was more intrigued, which is refreshing. Keep up the good work and stay real!
I want to see more! I love places like these, they’re so rich in history and character. All I could think of when I saw the tunnel of stairs was, “Imagine singing in there!” It would give such a haunting, ethereal effect.
The colors, lighting, and moss of that tunnel makes it all looks like video game art. or creepy anime art, but its real life... The moss, only living where there was light is, makes all that look apocalyptic
Finally a proper video that does the place justice! You just made up my mind to visit this station. I have wanted to go here ever since I saw it in an anime a few years ago!
I miss wandering around and stumbling across gems in Japan's countryside. Hope there's some behind the scenes commentary on the podcast. Great job as always, and really excited for this season!
Norm, this is your best video yet. Really atmospheric and creepy. I follow a lot of TH-cam channels on Japan, and none of them have done anything quite like this. Well done for finding something truly original to document. Looking forward to further videos.
I'm watching all your videos this weekend as it is Victoria Day in Canada and Toronto is still social distancing/isolating at home. Just wanted to say as an Initial D fan, I kind of geeked out and became SUPER excited to see a visit to Gunma.
I think the fact that it's isolated makes me want to go there whenever I feel like the city life is suffocating me. I would probably bring a friend but I think going alone would also be an experience. After all, it is normal to fear the unknown but that is what makes it equally exciting!!
My second night in Japan I went up the nearby Mt. Tanigawa alone and slept in one of the few ski cabins. Rained all night and heavy fog, was super eerie up there alone. Hiked down in the morning, washed in the river at the bottom of the valley and took a train to Joetsu from Doai. I'll never forget my second day in Japan. All by chance I went there, to Doai. Great day.
That looked like such an amazing place to take photos! I would love to do a cosplay shoot from maybe The Last of Us or something like that in there. So amazing! Can't wait to see more in future videos!
I love watching those videos about creepy places! Hope to see more of them here! I also love how you got to not only capture the creepy side of the station but also the beautiful side Wonderful video!
Absolutely loved this - so much so that I watched it again with my 16 year old son. Definitely would go - but with a friend. Son says that he wouldn't come though because of the stairs....
Totally wild. Most places would have closed off the entrance and stopped running electricity to it long ago. Leave it to Japan. I just finished climbing the stairs to the castle in Uwajima and walked away in pain. I can't imagine that endless corridor of misery. Great find. Thanks for sharing Norm.
I had been binge-watching all your videos, and listening to your podcasts. I have gotta say that the start of Season 3 adventures are definitely my top 5 videos of yours, amongst your family videos, Tokyo hidden gems videos, Japanese craftsmanship videos, and your reviews of your first Japan trip DVs. I would love to see/listen to more contents from you! Hope to see you one day!

The audio with the wind and crows was amazing. What a creepy station! I would definitely want to go there with a friend. The train was unexpected but it was really neat to see.
Doai station is a FASCINATING little anachronism in, not only Japan, but the world at large. Such a unique station for such a specific and small purpose; I’m so intrigued by the people who use it with any frequency (and I’d also love to visit as a tourist)

video number two!! gosh, here's an oldie but goodie! this is still one of my all time favorite TL videos, i love the creepy editing, the eerie background music, and the whole slightly unnerving vibe. i love the creepy things, so naturally doai station is very high on my japan bucketlist. one day i'll make it out there and suffer those same stairs!
I absolutely love when people leave a little trail of comments like this as they do a binge It gives us a chance to get to know each other and allows me to experience some of the videos with you along the way!!
Oh I am so absolutely in love with this. I've done urban exploration (exploring abandoned buildings and tunnels just like this) since I was a teen and I've always had a massive interest in similar places in Japan because they're so unique. I'm sooo happy you're showing this side of Japan, I want to go there so bad! There's nothing frightening about this to me although I understand the spook factor for some people. I just love to see nature taking over these places with the plants overtaking the space and the moss reaching the ceilings in the tunnels. Man, I hope you do more of this!
Love these kinds of video man! Gotta say your videos are true art man! I love your filming techniques and the way you capture Japan in its natural state! Makes me feel like I'm actually there! I really thought that this was going to be a urban exploration type of video but all in light... It was just a visit to a Train Station lol!

Hey Norm. That station is awesome. I’d go, even alone. Gunma is on my to-do list for my next visit (Initial D fan) already, so why not check it out?
So cool! The tunnels reminded of some japanese video games and I love that these game scenes were probably inspired by the creator’s surroundings or areas they’ve been to!
Oh!!! a camera panning around with a recording device, and Norm playing shamisen WAY off in another part of the station echoing faintly in the background... Could add the the creepy factor.
I'd try to do it but my legs would die before I could get back up to the surface. Seems really dark, like anything less than top quality hardware could get a good image.
abandoned properties in almost any area in japan have an eerie quality to them that is almost indescribable - probably because of how they almost always look untouched (i.e. not destroyed by vandals) and frozen in time. doai is so huge it could be an underground (of sorts) city. my first glance impression was that this was very bomb shelter-esque. very interesting and unique video !
I actually would like to visit :) I'm frequently in Japan and I love their trains. Does the place have a commemorative stamp? I don't really see any in the video. It's quite normal for these kinds of "special" stations to have these visitor logs.
I believe I first saw this station on Abroad in Japan, but seeing it twice doesn't take away from it's charm. I love that Japan has these places, lost to time yet so full of history.
It was really down to the judgement of the surveyors who did this line. The above-ground segment was originally constructed as a single track main line; the second track was added in the 50s. Closer to Yubiso station, the above ground track actually has a helix that goes partially above ground and underground for a good length of its course. The challenges of building a mountain railway.
This could be among the best episodes!! I love exploring old things! Also amazing shots closeup of the moss under the light. P. S. I would have sooo gone alone!
Hey norm! I finally made it to japan and will be here at least a year . I already started vlogging but I need some tips! How do you get so comfortable in front of the camera! 😫 please!
Welcome!! I’ve 100% definitely mentioned this a bunch of times, but there are 2 things I always recommend: 1. Start making videos like 6 months to a year before you make any you want to post! It will teach you more than I can here (I don’t talk about it much, but I made videos every single week for over a year before starting TH-cam) But since it’s a bit late for that 2. Forget about the camera or ppl Imagine looking into the lens that you are speaking directly to either - your best friend - your closest family member - your future self The second you think about “viewers” the stress hits and you lose It really comes down to practice. Very few things are natural from the start 😊 Hope it helps
Tokyo Lens Thank you for the quick response! I’ll definitely be using those tips! So far it’s been very fun here , except for the train system lol not gana lie when I say I already got lost a couple times haha
Pretty much abandoned train station in Japan: clean windows; working lights; aesthetically pleasing decay and moss; train still stops there. Any public transport 2000 km Southwest of Tokyo: filthy peeling paint; signs are out of date; lights have been broken or stolen; cigarette butts, feces, spit; transportation may never arrive. Why do I live here? 😭😭
And the adventure begins!! Who is as excited as I am?
I recommend watching with headphones if you have em! (and on a bigger screen!!)

Oh!!! a camera panning around with a recording device, and Norm playing shamisen WAY off in another part of the station echoing faintly in the background... Could add the the creepy factor.
Awesome videos Tokyo Lens.😊 Great Job. Creating them. I to Love & Live for Japan. It's a very magical place.
I'd try to do it but my legs would die before I could get back up to the surface.
Seems really dark, like anything less than top quality hardware could get a good image.
My IPhone got some decent footage, but the real challenge was the audio lok
I can't believe it's still operating!!! I would totally go, that's amazing!
WOW - what a bizarre station. I would have to have someone else with me. After all, I may need encouragement that I can make it back UP the stairs. 😜😊
Going back up was the definite challenge lol
You are doing great stuff man! Can't wait to visit Doai station this month! Thanks for your good work.
That was awesome. Wondering if you guys would have gone there at night instead of day time.
Lol I was just thinking that last night....
I now REALLY want to visit this place at night
Like.... so much lol
abandoned properties in almost any area in japan have an eerie quality to them that is almost indescribable - probably because of how they almost always look untouched (i.e. not destroyed by vandals) and frozen in time. doai is so huge it could be an underground (of sorts) city. my first glance impression was that this was very bomb shelter-esque. very interesting and unique video !
I actually would like to visit :)
I'm frequently in Japan and I love their trains.
Wow, wild. Did you discover why is it so deep when there are other tracks just running along the ground level?
the other tracks go back to Ueno!
still looking into A LOT of questions I have from this place lol.
I just discovered your channel today and i’m addicted to your videos already 😍
Looks like Batman's station. 😂
VER MUCH SO!!
How did I not think of that....
I think I need to watch Batman tonight now
This could be among the best episodes!! I love exploring old things! Also amazing shots closeup of the moss under the light. P. S. I would have sooo gone alone!
3:54 thats a freaking staircase to the underworld.
i would absolutely love being there wow, i love that kind of old (semi?)abandoned stuff!! excited for the new series as well!!!
Next episode coming soon!
Hey norm! I finally made it to japan and will be here at least a year . I already started vlogging but I need some tips! How do you get so comfortable in front of the camera! 😫 please!
Welcome!!
I’ve 100% definitely mentioned this a bunch of times, but there are 2 things I always recommend:
1. Start making videos like 6 months to a year before you make any you want to post!
It will teach you more than I can here
(I don’t talk about it much, but I made videos every single week for over a year before starting TH-cam)
But since it’s a bit late for that
2. Forget about the camera or ppl
Imagine looking into the lens that you are speaking directly to either
- your best friend
- your closest family member
- your future self
The second you think about “viewers” the stress hits and you lose
It really comes down to practice. Very few things are natural from the start 😊
Hope it helps
Tokyo Lens Thank you for the quick response! I’ll definitely be using those tips! So far it’s been very fun here , except for the train system lol not gana lie when I say I already got lost a couple times haha
What a thrilling ride that was! I would definitely explore the place, just not alone.
Did anyone else see something’s moving on the other side of the glass from minute 7:21 just when they noticed the handprint? Or Is it just silly me?
another great video can not wait for the next one
Pretty much abandoned train station in Japan: clean windows; working lights; aesthetically pleasing decay and moss; train still stops there.
Any public transport 2000 km Southwest of Tokyo: filthy peeling paint; signs are out of date; lights have been broken or stolen; cigarette butts, feces, spit; transportation may never arrive.
Why do I live here? 😭😭
It is eerily beautiful and fascinating. Great video!
I can't be the only one who thought of HxH after seeing those stairs
