  • From Goldeneye 007 to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare via Stargate SG-1, the FN P90 has cemented itself as one of the most iconic SMGs in pop culture. With the help of Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK, we break down what makes this unique PDW so iconic, and why games have embraced this weird little SMG.
    In this episode of Loadout, Dave Jewitt visits the Royal Armouries to talk to Keeper of Firearms & Artillery Jonathan Ferguson to chat about one of pop culture’s most iconic submachine guns, the P90.

      Oh yea ! 👍 Somehow it took me ages to realize, that most of the human weapon systems are far superior to the goa'uld's...its because their behavior, armors and weapons and last but not least, voices are intimidating...but they get bushwacked by human weapons all the time...at least in close quarter combat...the goa'uld have space ships and teleportation and their hand thingys with healing capabilities...so they have that 😅

    As a kid I loved the P90 in Counter strike, it looked so cool and was so sci-fi even down to its unique loading mechanism. I never thought of it as realistic or functional so my mind was blown researching into this piece and learning how actually it had loads of tactical advantages like the downward bullet ejection or the fact that keeping track of your rounds is easy. And apparently it doesn't jam much despite the wacky feed mechanism! Truly a marvel of engineering.

    • @YeeSoest
      @YeeSoest ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I fell in love with the looks and the easy correcting for recoil (straight up, slowly pull down and you're golden!) made the P90 my go to gun in many cases. My favorite SMG and it even radiates to the point where the 5-7 is my favorite pistol just because it uses the same ammo

    • @jeffbenton6183
      @jeffbenton6183 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@YeeSoest In addition to all the other advantages, it seems to me that more police units should carry the P90 and 5-7 because there's less of a risk of stray bullets. The rounds, though (soft) armor-piercing, are lighter than typical 9mm pistol rounds, so they lose energy earlier, so they don't go as far in the event of a miss (though, being faster, they also keep a flatter trajectory longer, making them easier to aim). Although, I don't shoot much, so I guess people can take what I say with a grain of salt.

    • @thomaswalmsley8959
      @thomaswalmsley8959 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeffbenton6183 it's probably a combo of 2 things.
      1) cost p90s are fairly expensive, ARs are cheap in America.
      2) it's my understanding also that once the police need to use something longer and packs more of punch, you might as well just get a rifle with an intermediate round, so logical just defaults to AR rifles, instead of weird "super" pistol rounds made to penatrate body armor (which isn't a concern for cops). But the biggest is probably reason #1.

I originally thought it was just a fictional prop for the show because it looked so sci-fi. I've been excited when it and weapons inspired by it have appeared in any games and movies. I had a period where I got into casual airsoft with my friends, and I mainly ran an automatic electric P90 where the magazine was a hopper that held an insane amount of BBs. My friends actually thought it was unfair because most of them used M4s and things with conventional magazines and had to reload while I kept spraying lol. Downside was when it got somewhat low on BS it would feed a lot less reliably.

Much safer for the talent/cast when it ejects downward since they really had fully functional ones loaded with blanks that they shot on screen. A shortage in blanks for the P90 caused by the war in Iraq(?) resulted in the “Carter special” where they made up/invented a gun chambered differently for her for a season to cut down on how many blanks they needed.

    I'm a ten years US Navy veteran , radar operator and security . I bought myself an FN PS90 ( civilian version ) of the P90 for Christmas 2022 . The model I own came with standard iron sights and a rail mounted above for attaching optics . The standard iron sight system is very hard to see through and is basically useless . I mounted a ( Vortex Optics ) illuminated reticle 1- 8x low powered variable optic above the basic sights , and it's wonderful to sight through . The current price of 7.5 x 28 mm cartridges runs almost $1USD per round in 2023 . My FN PS90 loaded with one fifty round magazine and two fifty round spare magazines fits into a tennis racket case . I could walk around wearing athletic clothing with a tennis racket case in hand and nobody would suspect I was the most heavily armed man in the vicinity .

    Decent light armor pen, 50 round magazine, intuitive feed mechanism, brilliant ejection action, wonderfully proportioned for the bullpup design, especially nice grips, and a tri-rail accessory mount. This weapon is all I ever need in any game, even going into rifle range, just pop on a nice short range scope and you're good. Tactical flashlight and laser sights optional, but functional AND badass looking.

    The P90 was envisioned as a PDW for logistics personnel and HVTs (such as officers) behind any front lines to defend against special forces (paratroopers, infiltrators, saboteurs), but the weapon has been adopted most widely by said special forces that in wars tend to go after logistics and HVTs.
