The younger generation of the football world will never understand the beauty & poise players like Pirlo, Carrick, Kroos, Xabi Alonso (just to name a few) brings to the game.
When it comes to the Anchor position (or also known as ‘Regista’ position) It’s not about who is the strongest nor who is the most defensive-minded.
It’s about ball retention, ball distribution & pitch awareness all in one.
As I’m a 90’s chap, to me personally,
Xavi & Pirlo were the greatest ‘Regista’s to ever grace a football pitch, & i’m not discounting any players before them of course.

Robby Baggio was right in 2011 when he was put in charge of the Italian youth technical development. He attempted to change Italian football from the youth on up.
He wrote a 500 page book on his plan. He ended up quitting like one or two years later basically because those in charge of Italian football dismissed him. He was a legendary player and football visionary. He was 100 percent correct and damn shame that he quit the game forever. Italy would not have had a dry spell I believe if he had been left in that position

Having witnessed both Pirlo and Xavi‘s entire career. I have always regarded Pirlo as the superior player of the two and the best midfielder of his generation. If Pirlo were surrounded by world class players like those surrounded Xavi, he would have achieved everything Xavi would have achieved and more. There can be a Xavi once a while, but there can never be another Pirlo. Pirlo is just Unique.

I know goal scoring is what’s praised, but he made it a helluva lot easier for his teammates to score. At every club. On the highest levels. On the biggest stages. When i tried that, it suddenly felt like my ankle is bent backwards and i fell forward, the ball only moves a couple meters lol

He's my favorite all time playmaker midfielder. When Pirlo could not find openings and he would go forward and create dangers of all sorts. I was always amazed because it's like you know to a point that is coming but somehow the defense gets pressured with no time to react because they were worried about the filtered pass to the offense. BTW, great music selection.
I think it goes great with the master Pirlo since wine, pirlo and classical guitar go well together. . I'm tired of that rap and overused electronic songs.

To achieve all of this qualities, (and not even at his level) you gotta train So hard for years. It's impossible if that's not your profession, but I'm willing to try and replicate some of it. It just seems so fun to play like this.

There are three players that played this unique role most of their careers..
1- Pirlo, the most entertaining to watch of course, free kicks, passing, crosses, unbelievably calm dribbling.
2- Scholes, shooting power, crosses, passing, intensity.
    3- Xavi, passing.

to be fair Guardiola and Deschamps are possibly two prototypes of the deep-lying playmaker position. Pirlo, Scholes, Busquets, and Thiago then perfected them with their own penchant.

I think Scholes when he hit 30 and had to slow his game down, must have modelled his new style of play partly on Pirlo....or was it the other way around? Or did they both develop this style at the same time? Who cares, they were both amazing
