I'm 67. Check this one out. "At Calvary", as performed by Isbaptist Toranto.. Very simple, very heartful hymn from an age gone by.
There's a certain simple beauty and power to these old hymns that's so rare in contemporary worship, isn't there? I'm not much older than you, and I'm obsessed with them!

I couldn't agree more. Sometimes I'm not sure if the song was written about the LORD or someone's girlfriend/boyfriend. HE is and always should be our only focus in worship.

I agree about shallow, repetitive, man-centered "worship" efforts. This hymn was played at my wedding 44 years ago. Same beautiful lady all these years, The Colonel's Daughter.

More than sixty years ago my teacher, Mr Smythe, wanted to include this beautiful hymn in school assembly. Nobody wanted to sing a solo. He knew I had a good reading voice, and asked me to read the words. They have been with me ever since. When I visited my daughter's church in the UK, before COVID-19 struck, the musicians played and sang the hymn beautifully. At the end one of the leaders came and sat next to me and asked, "Why are you crying Steve?" I told him how much the words meant to me, they are a gospel in miniature, and then he asked me to tell the whole church. I can't help but cry every time I hear the hymn. Jesus is everything to those who believe on His name.
Stephen, I consider this to be my soul's hymn; ever since I first heard it so many years ago and through many a dark night of the soul this hymn has been there to remind me that Christ alone is my vision...no matter what befalls me this side of Heaven. I too weep my guts out every time I hear it. Sometimes I can barely sing along.

I grew up singing hymns, but didn't care for any of it. Now at 24, the Lord has drastically opened my heart to him and I cry listening to hymns. The Lord draws souls to him and his grace is so unbelievable you can't help but long for him.

It's difficult to express just how much my heart yearns to be in the company of believers like these who worship God in spirit and in truth. I am an American living on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica near to the town of Jaco which is an international sex tourism destination, and as you can imagine, it is very oppressed with heavy forces of darkness and as one might expect, a strong spirit of lust and sexual perversion. There is a bordello right across the street from where I live, and every day and night I hear the music played as people unwittingly give themselves over to Satan. God has called me to stand against the rulers, principalities, and wickedness in high places of this region as a Tier 1 Special Operations Warrior in His Last Days Army, and every day I engage the enemy head-on. I pray God sends other strong warriors to stand with me.

@@Linds2476 absolutely you may ask. It is in reference to God centered worship, not man centered. Many of the new worship songs are very man centered...just count the number of personal pronouns being used. Worship music should be just that...worship. To sing His praises and our desire to be focused only on Him.

It is a wonderful thing to be a Christian. Since I was 15 I’ve committed my heart to the Lord. I did grow up in a Christian home. God has blessed me with a wonderful husband and two children.

I listen to this song almost everyday on my drive to my classroom in the Bronx.... when I hear this song I am reminded despite my numerous failings and unworthiness, My Father in heaven still loves me. It reminds me that we ought not to walk in the flesh, materials and trappings of this world but by the spirit and word of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ...

My grandma passed away a year and a half ago of lung cancer and I remember singing this song in church with her. She was Irish and would have loved this version. Thanks for the memories.
It was originally an Irish song, written in Irish Gaelic. Iona recorded a version of this song in 1996, in Gaelic (helped by Moire Brennan [from Clannad], whose grandfather had translated the hymn back into Irish).

I cannot express how elated I am to have discovered that there is a group called “Celtic Worship”. Combining 2 of my favorite things - Jesus and my Celtic heritage? I can’t believe this exists and I didn’t find it before now. But it came at the perfect time because I cried out to Jesus and he brought me here. This is one of the favorite Hymns sung at St. Columbia Presbyterian Church Cape Breton Nova Scotia. Most of our family roots go back to the Hebrides & the Hymn strikes a chord in the Souls of our Celtic roots today. This was beautifully done & greatly appreciated by me.

That low whistle is such a beautiful instrument, I've had recorder flute lessons for 10 years, which is a while back now, but I wanted to play music again but something new. Well, I bought myself a tin whistle and I want to learn how to play these kinds of songs. And then find more people to play together with. If I can teach myself the basics, I eventually plan to upgrade my cheap high whistle for a more expensive low whistle. I can't sing, but that'll be my way of praising God's name. The only difference between some of the more modern Christian worship songs and Hymns is age. This is one of the oldest hymns we have. The words are mostly unchanged for over 1600 years. They have changed from Gaelic to English but the "soul" of the song remains the same. These lyrics would not be out of place in The Book of Psalms. I believe GOD has never stopped talking to us through the ages, most often by song. If you listen, listen with both ears, you will find GOD's voice ringing out from the strangest of places.

It's time for us as a Christian community to go back to our roots. Leaving behind us the temptation to condemn others for sins we ourselves will never or can never struggle with. Instead, let us proclaim the victory Jesus exemplified for us on the cross. Let us bring hope to the hopeless, a hand up to the downtrodden. Let us take the shirt off our back to cloth the naked, and the food out of our mouths to feed the hungry. Let us give ourselves in selfless love to all those in need, whether they look like us, worship like us, or even abide by our laws. Let us turn to our enemies not with the hatred of war, but with the love of the living Christ. Let us meet the forces of evil in this world with love and acceptance as Jesus did. Let us shake off the shackles of a thousand years of theology and go back to the original truth of Jesus, the truth that brought people's around the world into Christ's embrace all those years ago and inspired men to write the words we now hear in ancient songs such as these.

The Celtic Church is "Celts who Do the Will of God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ, in the style of their people." when the lady says "Celtic Church is a true Church", she didn't invalidate any other churches (groups of people doing the same).
You're Protestant, right? When most Protestants say "Biblical", they use it as a placeholder for a number of adjectives that are defined and praised in the Bible, such as faithful, hopeful, joyful, lawful, just, fruitful, peaceful, united, thoughtful, enthusiastic, God-seeking, and the like.
I'm protestant too, but I've been exploring Catholic teaching and they have a lot going for them. I'd counsel you to not condemn a church before you've throughly examined their fruits.

@Justice Boofer Only if you consider the concepts of "God, Honour, & Country" misguided, you 'MISGUIDED BOOFER!"!...Add to those the facts national prosperity, impressive decreased joblessness, the international strength of the U.S. dollar, the blocking of "Pelosian/Sanders-type" idiots (and their like), effectively 'balls-checking' on North Korea, China, and Iran (of course, winning on all fronts there), (Founding Fathers) Constitutional support and defense of the Constitution w/Bill of Rights (ESPECIALLY The 2nd Amendment which ensures and protects all the rest!) and a dedicated start to stopping illegal immigration into the Homeland and you end up with everything BUT 'misguided'!!!!!!
