What a wonderful old hymn! I believe that it goes back over a thousand years to a poem written by an Irish believer who was a spiritual descendant of St. Patrick. ❤
So think about this. A well known hymn performed by a bluegrass band has ONE MILLION PLAYS. You can't tell me the Petersen family is not blessed.
As my lovely grandmother would always say after listening to something like this: "I feel like I've been to church!"

This is probably my favorite hymn of all time. Our worship pastor calls songs like this "evergreens," they never seem to age.
I pray this hymn lasts another 1200 years and more.... may it live in Christian hearts forever.

This melody dates to the 6th century. It's found its way through the ages for a reason. Look it up, it's very interesting.

Julianne's vocals are simply on another atmosphere. Heavenly tone of an angel. So much talent, God blessed the Petersens with passion, soul and an outstanding musical work ethic.
Wonderful and they sing the verse that is skipped by many. "Be Thou my Battle Shield". The lyrics are posted already by Liz Newton.
It is very difficult not to get caught up in comparisons of which young lady has the best voice or who is the best musician. If you are new to the petersens, please accept some advice from someone who has listened to them for hundreds of hours. It's impossible. They are all magnificent. And that includes the guys.

Its always great to listen to this great Christian band. Here we have singling, Katie the softest and smoothest voice, Ellen the more powerful voice, and Julienne the unique voice with some natural vibrato. This band presents a clean wholesome image of people that love Christ as I do. When you love Christ you are never alone. He is with you always.
I have believed in our Lord for so many years now but this past year my faith has increased immeasurably.
Back in January/February of this year we sang this hymn at church and I immediately looked for it when I got home. My children and I listened and fell in love with your group instantaneously but most importantly, fell in love with the Lord.
I sing this hymn every day and feel closer to Him.
I just wanted to finally thank you all for your righteous music, God is using you all in such a glorious way. May He bless your family. ❤

When they went into acapella, you could really hear the purity of their voices. This is music. This is song. This is poetry. And it is backed with musicians that can play instruments and actually sing. I'm getting u there in age and one of the remaining items on my bucket list is to see ThePetersons in concert. I am hoping to get to Branson next year and mark that item off my list.

Its origins are uncertain, but it is believed that it was written around the eighth century. The original title is "Rop Tù Mo Balle" in Old Irish Gaelic. The text was then translated into English, in 1905, by Mary Elizabeth Byrne and became “Be Thou My Vision”. The current text of the hymn, however, is the one reduced to verse by Eleanor Hull in 1912. The hymn is now sung on the basis of an Irish melody called "Slane".
They're all wonderful but any time Ellen gets a solo is a plus for me.

A wonderful return to the Peterson's original character.Matthew's rythm guitar, as usual, solid as a brick. Emmet's on balance. Julienne has really come along, vocally, my compliments. I agree. I wished I could play acoustic rhythm 1/10th of his skill level. Matt Petersen is a rock for the group with his rhythm guitar. He does not get the credit he deserves. Every member of the group is uniqely outstanding in different ways. Karen Petersen did indeed do a good job. They were all born with natural talent, a gift, she and they have just honed it with time.

For any Gaels or Gaelic learners who might happen upon this, this hymn is actually a translation of an Old Irish prayer. It's been translated into modern Irish and Scottish Gaelic as well
All the instruments blend together well, and the voices... the voices are in perfect harmony. The dubro and the violin have compacted together to produce a sound worthy of these haunting lyrics, all praise to the One God, the God of Israel, who sustains all life, and unto whom no one or no thing can ever be compared. 3:11 The traditional Irish hymn tune Slane is perfect for the sisters' voices. It was Peggy's favourite. She passed peacefully and at home late winter-Parkinson's and dementia. We would have been married forty five years August.
This is just an awesome exhibition of each of the girls differing, yet all excellent vocal styles. The mesh so well together, yet are also all spectacular on their own. Awesome job by all!
Heavenly!!! Beautiful your interpretation of this ancient Irish hymn! Amazing how you can go from country-bluegrass to pop and gospel with this ease. And everything is always very professional! The instrumental part is perfect, with the dobro and the fiddle in great evidence. The voices of the three girls are already wonderful individually, then in the choirs the fusion and harmony are perfect !!! Sorry though, but this time I want to congratulate especially Ellen: her voice always reaches very high peaks and here she expresses herself with truly extraordinary clarity and power. She really has a “top world” voice! Then, that a cappella ending gives you goosebumps !!!

Year 2021 is my most bipolar year I've ever had.. so far.
Earlier this year my younger brother was struck by a truck and got a broken leg and then my father died of Covid 19 (according to his doctor) a month later.. (Feb 19 &. March 14 respectively)
The first half of 2021 was really the darkest chapter of my life.. I woke up everyday holding a grudge against God, heavens, Jesus (by the way I was raised a Catholic) or anything and became hateful toward people in general.. I paint my emotions out just to survive the day..
April came. May went. And then June 27 happened. The first time I saw your video on TH-cam was your JD's Country Roads cover.. I was searching any bluegrass music after rewatching my favorite cartoon The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and one of the recommendations was yours, I clicked and that was it, too late for the party but thankful now being part of it.(many had covered that song yes, but your chemistry is surreal)
The second half is a hopeful one.
Fast forward 9 Oct.. this Hymn..
I listen.. then I looked for Liz's Lyrics cause I'm not really familiar with,
and realized God, heavens, Jesus is reaching out.. as if saying
"I AM still here". The lyrics are the ones I long to say.
Everytime I watch your videos And listen to your songs I feel blissfully ecstatic..
And to sum up my 2021 I would likened it to a title of Irving Stone's novel.
