How Much Does a Wood Fence Cost | 1st Time Homeowner Guide to Fences

  • Hey guys, so I bought my first house this past November. One of the first projects I wanted to tackle was replacing my ugly chain link fence with a wooden fence both to keep my dogs in and for privacy from the road and to cut down road noise as I live next to a fairly busy street.
    I knew it was going to be expensive but at the end of the day was actually pretty happy with the deal I got. I wound up paying $4400 for a wooden fence of pressure treated wood. My posts were 36' deep, I wound up going with pressure treated shadowbox/board and batton style fence with dog eared tops and one gate.
    Now the cost will vary depending upon where you are in the country, lumber costs at the given time, whether you do cedar or pressure treated wood, and also if you decide to go with 2x6 or 2x8 kicker boards as opposed to the standard 2x4's.
    I'd suggest getting a couple quotes. Don't let the company ask you how much you're looking to spend as they will build a fence to fit that price, ask them what they would suggest and the options and after talking to a few contractors you'll begin to get an idea of the costs as well as picking the different contractors brains for ideas and suggestions.

    i just had a bunch of contractors look at our fence. we wanted a horizontal design fence. we were quoted between 13k-14,500k so we called the lowest bid and said our budget is 9k after taxes and all materials etc and they agreed to do it for $9k with a 2 yr warranty, even using postmaster steel fence posts because they don't rot like 4x4s. we are waiting for our contractor to write everything up so we are all on the same page

    Man they did a really good job on that fence and you got a really really good price. You definitely need to give those people a lot of referrals thanks for the video👍 Lowe's wanted to charge me 4,100 $ for a vinyl fence for 35 ft that was just a straight shot no corners.

    Cedar tends to not bow and twist as much as pine. cedar has a grey look when it is exposed to sun. They both shrink through time so paint or stain should be applied prior to overlapping the boards like this guy did when they shrink you will see raw wood where they overlap

    You will have to put some sort of stain or coats on a new cedar fence after its seasoned for atlas a season to dry and settle before staining .. If you don't apply something it'll look grey in 2 years .

    Your fence looks great. It's a board-on-board fence (which is exactly what you said, a variation of the shadowbox style). The board-on-board is handy as the wood shrinks, it prevents the small gaps from forming had the pickets been placed side-by-side. Also, be sure to wait as long as you can before staining -- oil stains and water do not mix well, and the pickets are mass-produced and don't have time to dry, hence the 3-month recommendation. Probably a moot point seeing that this video was posted last year. :)

    $4400!!!! Jesus that's two times more than I thought it would cost. 20K for a vinyl fence estimate? That's fricking insane. I thought it would be a lot cheaper than that. Do you live in CA or something were the prices are super inflated?

    • @pbmartinfencing

      The average price for cedar is 20.00 -24.00 per ft.. material is high and so is good craftsmanship.. and cedar will absolutely last longer.

      Some people are out to lunch with their idea of what pricing should be. Lumber alone cost $200 per section . Do you want to work for free running your own business or actually get ahead? lol We'd install 280' 6' tall board overlap for $60+/lft which calculates to $15k and I'm cramped with work non stop. You get what you pay for. Pre fabricated sections will last 5 years max and ours hand built with #1 cedar last 25+ years . You could pay the cheap guys $25/lft or $7k for a 280' fence and have to replace it 5 times over 25 years equalling $35k instead of paying the $15k the first time and never thinking about it again.

    250lf of 6’ fence, wanted to replace my existing with horizontal and trex, materials alone were @$22k. Then looked at PT boards dropped price to about $17k…just materials so install price would have been double these. So decided on replacing my existing dog ear panels with a custom cedar square picture frame 6’ h x8’ panels and reusing existing posts that i am wrapping in 1/4” cedar to make new, in process of it right now so don’t have final # but I’m looking at @ $7k. $4,400 installed for that fence is a STEAL and looks fantastic.

    • @jalinmurphy9
      @jalinmurphy9 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Use rapid set concrete and only wait about an hour before framing instead of a couple days. Or hardpack your posts in place like they used to do, but with concrete instead of dirt. Then frame and hang your pickets, then add water to the concrete at the bases of your posts at the end of the day. Might seem wrong, but technology even in construction products always changes. Efficiency is just intelligent laziness.
