I'm a painter, - have my own little company, been painting for quite a few years, and I gotta say I've really appreciated your perspective and the ability to see how another painter tackles similar situations. Once again, great video, good info. I hate doing fences cus ppl seem to stare at me strange when I give them the number of how much it costs. I just did one for a previous customer. My initial number seemed high so I trimmed it down some, - my average came out to about $24 per panel and after it was done I made enough to pay my guy that I had on it, but the business didn't make anything off of it. I should a stuck to the price I new it was gonna take. But I made the customer happy so not a complete loss. Anyways I really appreciate your perspective and info that you share. Thanks
I've been watching your videos for about 6 months and wanted to thank you. The information you provide is valuable, which is why you are increasing subscribers. A tip to make your video's even better - consider using fewer words. This would shorten your videos but convey the same information density. I have the same habit as you, which is to repeat myself or use 10 words when I could have used 5. Lastly thank you so much for providing such great content!
I've been working as a professional painter for 10 years, I always wanted to be better at my job, and this guy is my inspiration, this guy is just the best. I've learned so many things from him.
Big fan here.I would like to thank you because watching your videos made me sharpen some of my abilities to start my own company and make a decent living. Thank you and god bless.
Chris great video! I watched your videos on fence staining several years ago and since have stained several fences using your method and they all have turned out nice!
Charlotte North Carolina here, I charge about $40 per section, includes standard stain. I land about 50% of estimates with this price and using your bid packages. Thanks for the vid
Thank you for all of your videos Chris. I was able to start my company because of your help, and it has been really great. With your guidance, and practice, we are really doing awesome work for our customers 🙏😃🙏
Chris, Great video and information. I too don't deal with oil stain either on Fence's or decks. In my area it's just to hard to get enough dry days together for the prep and drying time of oil.
I do fence bids a lot like I do my deck bids. Boards are boards...then subtract spindals ect. I usually count the boards then if doing both sides obviously double it. I’ve found that you can lose with fences if you aren’t careful.
On a fence like the one behind you where you are just painting the one side do you constantly check the other side for runs that might occur on the other side when you are brushing the edges? That could cause a neighbor to complain!
Hello i have request if you can make a videos how to take accurate measurements of interior and how you calculate how much paint your need to orders. thank you and love your videos ❤❤
Hope you're enjoying a good Easter. Your videos have been a big help for my business. I don't always agree, but I appreciate your transparency and your reasoning. Two quick questions. First, if you've got pickets that need cleaning because of fungal growth or tannin bleed, do you typically just handle those with straight wash or do you use a wood cleaner product like one of the Superdeck cleaning products? I'm assuming if it's the latter, the material is priced in via an upcharge. Second, on wrought iron, will you do one that's in bad enough shape that it needs either a rust converter like Ospho or a zinc-based primer? Would those still stay in the $40-45/section or would you be even higher because of the labor/materials involved in those use cases? Thanks again.
Hi, thanks for the video. I'm closing on a home which doesn't have as much light coming through because of windows location. We're flipping the house from floor to ceiling. What sheen would you recommend for walls(light gray), new baseboards(white), new doors/window trims (white), new cabinets(bottom half navy bluish, top half white), new room doors (white) and new closet doors (white). Yes we're gonna paint all of these mentioned above. We're gonna use an airless paint sprayer. Thanks!
Do you prime the fence before painting over oil based paint with water based paint. If people are not sure what finish is on it you can test with metholated spirits with a rag. If it comes off on rag its waterbased.
I have a question. I have a Graco X5. I have a customer that has a 6ft fence with a lattice top panel between the posts. He wants me to restrain with water based semi transparent stain from Lowes. What tip should I use. How would I bid for this?.
How do you bid out fences that have an older semi-trans stain on it? Do you have to apply stain remover in order to stain the fence? Or will a good powerwash do the trick?
How do you go about masking hardware? I find it difficult. Either it gets on the hardware or you have bare spots after you remove the tape that are hard to touch up.
@@Idahopainter YES, but primarily Transparent. What's the process if it's a solid water base over previously painted oil base? Pimer? The reason I ask is out West the Old Timers relish oil whereas in the central "Midwest it's almost exclusively latex. The market out here in Western Wyoming is drastically different when it comes to product selectivity or oil based products of which I'm a little ignorant and trepid.
@@alvaroromero7147 you want to get the right products and the right amount, if you do or dont want the customer to know the material costs thats upto you, you want to have money in your pocket before you buy anything so you need to get a deposit for materials, or most box stores will allow you to go in and assemble an order put it aside and the customer comes in pays and picks it up.. if materials is 50% of the bid no issue with that, if labour is 90% of the bid you might not want the customer knowing the exact material cost or the job will be cancelled before it starts
Yup and most fences your always having to back brush and you really have to make sure you cover the under lip..that’s what allot of hacks don’t take the time to do is make sure the bottom lip is covered and boy do them old wood fences soak up the product..lol

Definitely not a whole lot of money in staining fences if your bidding is wrong. I've watched your videos for years. I've almost always agreed with most every video you posted. I have to say I am extremely disappointed that you posted this video. Unfortunately, most of my new customers watch TH-cam videos on how to do a paint estimate before they call me. This video looks very similar to videos posted by unlicensed, uninsured painters who pay their help cash, don't pay taxes and do not have workman's comp.
Chris, you probably don’t realize how helpful you’ve been to people with your videos. Thank you!
👍

Thanks .I found your fence painting video very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
One Question? How many sections ( panels) on average will a 5 gallon bucket of stain cover? And is there a quality difference?
Thanks for the video. I'm just starting out with painting. Your videos are extremely helpful. Appreciate it. 😁

Do you use any platforms that can use ai to show the clients fence in any finish and colour they want?
Chris, thanks for another great video, my question is $35 per panel, does this include water blasting/prep?
Yes
What if the fence has a ton of cracks paint that needs to be scraped and sanded

Sorry if I misunderstood but does the $35/panel include cleaning/pressure washing and also purchasing the stain for the customer?
That's what I want to know
That’s what I want to know too
How do you bid out fences that have an older semi-trans stain on it? Do you have to apply stain remover in order to stain the fence? Or will a good powerwash do the trick?
For overspray on a fence like the one in this video a full sheet of 4x8 plywood on end as a backing and keep moving it down the line.
Thanks for the tip
What abaout epoxy floors with flakes and clear top coat any idea of price for sq ft
Do these prices include material or is that apart?
Does that include the pressure washing
Woodscapes from Sherwin Williams can be applied as low as 35F I believe. Good product but it is a 2 coat product per manufacturer recommendation.
Yep
@Tyrone Koumoundouros shoot just do 4 while your at it
My standard is 5 coats minimum, $50/ per man
Does this include the paint/stain? And what is the average amount of time you put into a fence per panel?
There are many factors, travel, picking up stain, pressure washing, staining
Excellent video!
What is your panel cost in 2024? Here in N. Alabama I'm getting quotes of 62.50 per panel (one side).
How do you go about masking hardware? I find it difficult. Either it gets on the hardware or you have bare spots after you remove the tape that are hard to touch up.
I have a video on that
Thank you so much for sharing
🤙
Good honest video....👍
👍
Question? You never mentioned a primer coat into the overall cost seeing that fairly exclusively use water based paints to avoid liability.
You done prime stains

Nice video, but, what about semi-transparent stains?
All the same
Amazing resource!! Thank you!!
Nice thats a good one keep these kinna videos coming
Will do
How do you bid with the five gallon stain or paint being so expensive per customer
Just like the video says
Are you wearing knee pads under the pants or they the kind that has a slot for knee pads?
they are in the pants.
Almost through the full video, still trying to figure out if your price is Labor and material or labor only? Help :) thanks
Both!
Bruce Willis of painting! Great info.
Good job chris!
That was extremely helpful. Do you also break the bid into line item charges for the customer? Curious what your bid looks like
I do whole length, then gates, then tear out. Upgrades listed with fence description.
Hi Chris 1 question do you buy the paint from the money of your bid or does the customer buy it
I usualy get the costomer to buy all the material any advise on if i should buy all material or keep the customer buying it
Bid is labor and materials

I like this guy!!
I use a bicycle box zip-tied to a hand truck to protect the overspray.
Thanks for the info
How do you bid staining a deck
Its coming
You are the greatest
What about a white picket fence. Wood is new.

yes...
Yep

@@Vulcan5911 I typically charge $8 LF per side but I'm also in Southern California. That's all we do though Tom Sawyer Fence Painting.

A bid on a 4ft highx1500ft long wrought iron fence
Wow thanks buddy
Do these prices include paint?
yes... typically stain
Yes stain
You’re not going to talk about stain bleed through if just doing one side?

Why so cheap? California maybe for materials is $500
I can build a fence for your costs of painting them
You arnt charging enough then.
LMAO
I charge this way if I pay one thousand for material in general,I charge three thousand total.
Nice
