That's so true Ted. I was born and raised in Northern California. I spend my entire Naval career in the Pacific, and SE Asia (86-90). Us California boys could always tell when one of us was homesick. For those wondering... the song was released in 1965. That show, might have been from the early 1970's but the song is definitely from the mid-1960s. I grew up in the 1960's and 70's...The Mamas and The Poppas were very popular...had a lot of great hits, and Mama Cass, the heavy set girl, she went on to have some successful solos. She made a hit out of a John Denver song called Leaving on a Jet Plane and also she has a Beautiful song that was meant to encourage people to try for their dreams... it's called "Make Your Own Kind of Music"

The Mamas and the Papas were an American folk rock vocal group which recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. The group was composed of John Phillips, Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips (born Holly Gilliam). Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips,[2] the songwriter, musician, and leader of the group who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early 1960s. The Mamas and the Papas released five studio albums and 17 singles over four years, six of which made the Billboard top 10 and have sold close to 40 million records worldwide.[3] The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for its contributions to the music industry.[1] The band reunited briefly to record the album People Like Us in 1971 but had ceased touring and performing by that time. John Philips also got bands together for the Monterey Pop Festival. Singers and bands included Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin (Mama Cass is shown during Joplin's performance), Jefferson Airplane, the American debut of The Jimi Hendrix Experience (where he set his guitar on fire), The Who, and The Mamas & The Papas. Michelle Philips is currently the only surviving member and she became an actress.
This song has got this call and response thing going. You got the one main verse being sung. Then you got the other members repeating that lyric in harmony. And this pretty much flows until you get to the bridge of the song where it is all sung as one verse, then you get the instrumental interlude and then a repeat of the first part with a slight change of the lyrics. Quite nice actually. It’s very catchy, and The Mama’s & The Papa’s were brilliant when it came to harmony and doing stuff like this.
Wikipedia: "The song was written in 1963 while John Phillips and Michelle Phillips were living in New York City during a particularly cold winter, and she was missing sunny California. He would work on tunes late at night and one morning brought her the first verse. ...Michelle Phillips wrote the lyrics, 'Well, I got down on my knees, and I pretend to pray,' but Cass Elliot had been singing 'I began to pray' until corrected by Phillips when they were touring. She sang 'began' on the original recording." Phillips is the last surviving original member of the Mamas and the Papas.

Their song Creeque Alley is a catchy tune and it tells the story of their formation & rise to fame and also the general sense what it was like as a struggling musician in the 60s. The Mamas and the Papas were formed by husband and wife John Phillips (formerly of the New Journeymen) and Michelle Phillips, and Denny Doherty (formerly of the Mugwumps). Both of these earlier acts were folk groups active in 1964 and 1965. The last member to join was Cass Elliot, Doherty's bandmate in the Mugwumps, who had to overcome John Phillips' concern that her voice was too low for his arrangements, that her physical appearance would be an obstacle to the band's success and that her temperament was incompatible with his (Elliot struggled with obesity all her life, and felt deeply insecure about her looks). The group considered calling itself the Magic Cyrcle before switching to the Mamas and the Papas, inspired by the Hells Angels, whose female associates were called "Mamas"!
A comment a year later, although if I commented then, it would be the same. I was born in Simi Valley, Ventura County, California (SoCal) in 1967. California was and had been a Republican State up until the 90s. It is for that reason that California was the place to be. I'm not wanting to bring politics into this, but politics was a big part of it. The freedom that was afforded. The other major draw to California was/is the weather, geography and beauty.
In the early 60's, there was a whole folk scene in NY and other cities, kids with (mostly) guitars, getting together and singing. The four of them met there and got together in the mid-60's in this band.

I’m a seventy yr young white lady who grew up and partied to all the songs you react to. I’m glad to see young people rediscovering this music. Most of it iconic. You have to remember they didn’t have auto tune or electronics to clean up their voices. It was what you hear is what you get. Didn’t have MTV or VH1 to play music videos on. What we got to see was live performances. MTV didn’t come into being until August 1981. The Mamas and the Papas also did “Monday Monday”. Great song and lyrics. Have a great day Mr. Video....I enjoy your reactions immensely!!
The blonde woman and the guitar player had a daughter named Chynna Phillips. The drummer from the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, had two daughters name Wendy and Carney Wilson. These three daughters formed the group Wilson Phillips. Check out their song, "Hold On." It was played at the end of the movie "Bridesmaids" in the wedding reception scene.
So dude I'm a new subscriber to your Channel. But I've watched like 12 in the last 2 days, keep them coming you're flipping awesome. You got a little Katt Williams in you, and I love that
The blonde woman and the guy singing lead, John and Michelle Phillips are the parents of actress Mackenzie Phillips (from "American Graffiti" and the TV show "One Day At A Time"), and singer Chynna Phillips (part of the early 90s hit making trio Wilson Phillips, the other two girls in that trio are the daughters of Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys)
Two of them were married, John and Michelle Phillips. Mackenzie Phillips is their kid. Mama Cass was probably the most talented, but they were a great group.
Mackenzie is actually John’s daughter with another woman... Michelle is her stepmom... Michelle is, however, mother of Chynna Phillips, lead singer of Wilson Phillips
One of the great groups from the fabulous 60's. The Mamas & The Papas can really sing and harmonize. This is a great summertime song. One of my other favorites from them is " I SAW HER AGAIN LAST NIGHT"
If you listen to their song "Creeque Alley" it tells the story of them getting together. They've been described as 4 people trying to sound like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir
If I have the story right, Mama Cass Elliot had an amazing ear for vocal harmonies. She guided the formation of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, believing they would sound great together. (Obviously, she was right.) If you haven't done it yet, "Monday, Monday" was the other big hit by this group.
Good God my man... I grew up listening to these classics! I will always remember working on my father's race car while listening to this kind of music. I just probably aged myself but I don't care. Great reaction as always my friend
Saw them in person at Ohio University in 1965 or 66....they came out on the stage, obviously all stoned out of their minds, sang a couple of songs and bugged out...people were pissed! But I still love them
The chubby chick is/was Cass Elliot (RIP 1974), the shorter guy is/was Denny Doherty (RIP 2007). The tall guy is/was John Phillips (RIP 2001), the blonde was his wife Michelle Phillips. Michelle is the only one still alive. John and Michelle's child is Chynna Phillips of the group Wilson Phillips. John Phillips was also the father of Mackenzie Phillips, and Bijou Phillips the actors.

Your reaction to this is hilarious!!! I've watched it a couple times and I'm still crying from laughing so hard.
Give it up for the coolest cat on youtube....Mr. "Kick-Yo-Ass" Video!!!
As soon as you said “..okay step up!” I died laughing 😂
Dude on the right looks like a kid singing for a school play and knows his mother is in the audience xD
The blonde woman? I think you mean Michelle Phillips. SMH
Do The Allman Brothers Band, Whipping Post live from the Filmore East.
Yes
with this clown,,you high?
That's a pretty serious change in style fro the Mammas and Pappas.
Dude, this is 70s folk music personified.
People pay top dollar for 70s clothes.
I wish I had a couple of my vests with fringe on it today.
Cheers!
Mamas and the Papas (Wiki) : Years active : 1965-1968, 1971.
This video is 1966 at the Hollywood Palace.
Two of them were married, John and Michelle Phillips. Mackenzie Phillips is their kid. Mama Cass was probably the most talented, but they were a great group.
Michelle is step mom.
Let's not forget Wilson Phillips, more famous kids of the group.
Mackenzie is actually John’s daughter with another woman... Michelle is her stepmom... Michelle is, however, mother of Chynna Phillips, lead singer of Wilson Phillips
Thank you. I stand corrected.
China was their daughter not Mackenzie.
Your face when you saw them hahaha “they’re looking dopey as hell”😂 good vibes tho😂😂
I wanna go to California too!!! Thanks for the reaction!!!
You're gonna love "The Fifth Dimension" . . . . . might I recommend Up, up and away"? Or "Let the sunshine in"?
Yeassssssss
One of the great groups from the fabulous 60's. The Mamas & The Papas can really sing and harmonize. This is a great summertime song. One of my other favorites from them is " I SAW HER AGAIN LAST NIGHT"
I had to play this for my Father (71). Loves this song and use to dress like that. He was crack’n up at your comments about the fit and hair.
If you listen to their song "Creeque Alley" it tells the story of them getting together.
They've been described as 4 people trying to sound like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir
going to california by Zeppelin is a vibe too.........
just saying.
Anything Zeppelin is a vibe
@@DemilitionKiwi was just rolling with the california theme....
Absolutely!
"he stepped up" LMAO then you lit the cigarette
Mama Cass had a beautifu voicel. She was the bigger lady. Died tragically in the late 70's. Listen to Pachuco Boogie! I'll even translate it for you.
Mama Cass had the most amazing voice. Check out her version of "Dream a Little Dream."
You weren't ready for this!
If I have the story right, Mama Cass Elliot had an amazing ear for vocal harmonies. She guided the formation of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, believing they would sound great together. (Obviously, she was right.)
If you haven't done it yet, "Monday, Monday" was the other big hit by this group.
They do look goofy as hell though! LMAO But the sound neutralizes, makes you almost forget all that.
lmao! "where did they find each other!"
Next up! The Animals- House of the rising sun.
Led Zepp- Goin' to California. Joni Mitchell- California.
Did they craigslist each other...! lololo good one!
Good God my man... I grew up listening to these classics! I will always remember working on my father's race car while listening to this kind of music. I just probably aged myself but I don't care. Great reaction as always my friend
Four of the great voices in pop, especially the women! Beautiful harmonies.
This was my sneak out and drive around with a big fat hooter song!!!
LMFAO!!!!!! Much love my darling!!!!
Love your reaction, I grew up with that music, fun to see how young people react
HEY! MOM ! He's Back on !! Hes got the Mama and Papas on the telly
The 60's were a vibe in itself! Try the Mamas & the Papas/Go Where You Wanna Go. They had several big hits and were essential for the 60's vibe.
Dude you're one of my favorite reaction channels
Nice job! Enjoyed watching that with you!
They were performing on a show. ( Can't remember what show). They were introduced. If I'm not mistaken this was there last performance all 4 together.
Спасибо братуха! Отличная реакция ! Было видно как просто пропустил сквозь всего себя эту музыку и поймал вайб. Молодца ! 👍😀
Saw them in person at Ohio University in 1965 or 66....they came out on the stage, obviously all stoned out of their minds, sang a couple of songs and bugged out...people were pissed! But I still love them
one of my favorite songs from that era
Did they Craigslist each other🤣 Classic!
Lmao got to love the 60's !! Haha I am telling ya bro Matt Anderson - Ain't No Sunshine! Get your vibe on! LoL!!!
I knew you would like it eventually. Awesome song!
