    In my early 30s, I was one of these crazy skidder operators. I still miss it.

    Yeah, that music is somewhat of an annoyance , I would much rather have heard the diesel working .

    The operator must have been extremely in tune with the machine to show his talents like that! Nice video, I watched 2 guys here in PA run a couple 440's on a job and it seemed as though one was always being rolled off of it's lid!

    Try filling the tires about 3/4 with water. To prevent freezing, mix with sodium chloride. This will add weight to the wheels and help to keep them on the ground better. Support the axle with the tire just off the ground. Turn the wheel till the valve stem is on top, or to the height you want to fill to. Remove the valve from the stem and funnel the water/sodium chloride mix into the tire through the stem. Replace valve and pressurize the tire with air. It won't hurt the performance of the machine at all because the water in the tire offers no resistance - but it will keep the wheels on the ground and provide for a much more stable machine, especially in hilly terrain.

      Anyone who owns or operates a skidder more than likely nos loaded tires are no good! # 1 pain in the ass to change tubes,extra weight not good in soft ground,if you lay your jobs out right you will be emty going up and loaded going down

    Need a seat belt on lot of good men Pushing daisies because no seat belt

    • @yearginclarke
      @yearginclarke 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I don't necessarily not recommend wearing a seat belt, the only reason I'm alive right now is because I wasn't wearing a seat belt and had no "passenger" side door on the Cat 518 I was running when the brakes went out in 3rd gear going downhill on a narrow truck road with a nearly vertical drop below. (at this point we had already cut and logged everything about 100 feet above and below the road because the landowner wanted to "daylight" the road)
      This 518 was a backup skidder, as my main 525 skidder had broken down. The 518 had a flat tire that I had to fill up before running it, and at the time our crummy that had a pipewrench and other essential tools was gone, but I didn't know at the time that there was NO pipewrench available and searched for one to no avail, and after much time was wasted looking for a pipewrench that I thought we surely had, I had to painstakingly improvise with a hammer and chisel to get the cap off to fill up the tire, tire took longer to fill up than I thought it would, also had to fuel up the machine, and by that time had wasted alot of time trying to get the machine going, and I was in a hurry to get back down the hill to our landing and get some logs.
      When the brakes went out, the split second after I realized what was happening, I was going WAY too fast to safely try and stop it with the blade or any way else, panicked and jumped out the side with no door, which was luckily the the uphill side of the road...I got *_DAMN_* lucky there. If the skidder still had the door on that side I would be dead. Also could have easily gotten my pantleg hung up on something and gotten dragged for some length or other of the 300 feet down the hill where the skidder slammed straight into a madrone, and was lucky that when I jumped I cleared the tires and didn't get ran over by them.

      @@yearginclarke early 518 seatbelts were crap.

    • @yearginclarke
      @yearginclarke ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rene-up1dl I definitely agree with that. I also don't wear them in skidders because I use my left foot to run the throttle when backing up...I've got some kind of problem in my left shoulder from looking over my right shoulder all the time when I used to use my right foot. It got strained and never healed properly or something. With the seatbelt on you can't change positions in the seat, and it works my shoulder too hard to use my right foot when looking behind.

      @@yearginclarke closed cab skidders I always wore one. Open cab, sometimes. Retired now. Don't even have a seat belt in my 540A John Deere now. Newer John Deere/ Tigercat and caterpillar machines with rotating seats I never wore the stupid harness.

      @@Rene-up1dl I've never got to run the new modern machines. The 525 I was running is a 1996 model. I'm trying to find something else to do for work, but I would like to try a modern skidder sometime if I can.
