It's like watching a magic show. Wet blending is fantastic. Your tabletop minions lesson in wet blending over that skeleton soldier is engraved in my brain.

My wet pallet is always a disaster, it's fascinating to watch Sam and others who have such controlled, small mounds of paint on their palette, especially when mixing! 😛

I've seen painters reaching a more impressive/detailed result since I first watched this video. This is ofcourse also subjective as all art is. After a certain point of ability comes artistic choice and I am big fan of Sam's high contrast dramatic aesthetic. Also I have to say the speed and ease he arrives at these great results is the most impressive thing to me. He really is the Bob Ross of miniatures. What he does is sometimes magic to me. A few quick strokes and boom greatness at 1/10th of the time it takes for some other pros

At so many points I was like "It's perfect!", then Sam would keep going until again I'm thinking, "It's perfect!", but Sam would keep on painting. Just truly masterful artwork!

You never even lost the tip on your brush during this whole video. Exaggerated lighting can look cartoon-ish, but you are nailing it. Just the thigh on the ctan you did was a master class. Limited colors, Insanely good technique, just rediculously good skills.

    • @johnwiles4661
      @johnwiles4661 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Dont get too stressed about hiw well you can do wet blending. Your environment might be different to Sam's, and make your paint dry faster. Plus sam is some kind of painting demi-god that helps. Try not thinning your paint as much, thinned paind drys faster and robs you of the time that is so helpful to blending.

Please don't be offended when I say: one of the most interesting things in this video is watching the paint dry! It's not that I'm unaware in principle of how the appearance changes as this happens, of course, but when I'm painting myself I'm always busy somewhere else while that happens. Here I'm paying attention, and it's worth doing.
And I'm always amazed by the effectiveness of the little fake scratches. I wonder what one needs to do to become sufficiently patient to do that…? :)

On average, how much saliva do you personally apply to each miniature to get that liquid smooth blend? Applying a thicker layer of paint and then licking clean my brush/wetting it and then pulling that paint over to blend is one of the "hidden techs" I've picked up after some years of exp.

I recently got back into the hobby, and I'm watching this because of all the new fandangle stuff about NMM (and because Sam seems cool). Anyhoo, I thought I'd share the old school process (from my time when I did a lot of painting) with you, given that all TH-camrs now seem to have their special painting stations and lights and special paints and what-not. If I had made a video back then:
Step 1: put a pillow next to the coffee table and sit on it. The pillow will save arse rot. Being at the coffee table will still enable you to engage with your girlfriend while she takes over the TV to play Oblivion or watch things Iike Buffy, or Invader Zim or Babylon 5 DVDs on the original XBox
Step 2: Roll up a fuck ton of joints for you both for the day. You want to pace yourself with these to some degree, so include spin, and make sure there's plenty of coffee or coke on hand so you can be both baked and competent.
Step 3: Harden the fuck up because there are no painting tutorial videos.
Step 4: Paint in the darker versions of the colours you want to use for your miniatures. I say miniatures, plural, because all squads will be done in batches.
Step 5: carefully dry brush highlights of relevant colours in relevant areas (this should be easy because your baked and fixating).
Step 6: Sell a certain percentage of your models on ebay (the ones you thought would be cool to paint, but don't actually need for your armies). Put them as auction, because even though you were off your tits while painting them, they are still better than 99.9% of painted miniatures on ebay and people will go crazy trying to outbid each other for something half decent [note - this still seems accurate today].
Step 7: Use profit to buy more weed and miniatures.
I don't know what the late 80s guys did, but I'd like to think it was something similar. Just without the internet.
Okay, so who's going to start a satirical retro painting channel? Or do I have to?
