What did you think? Is there another challenge you'd like to see us tackle next? Let us know!

did I see you using Vallejo Air metallics ? I didn't realised they are ok for dry brushing, thought they would be too thin / diluted for that. Great to know . I might give them a try.
Could you do a death guard space marine tutorial, please 🙏
Is there any chance for you to make a video about drybrush paiting a human skin, especially on female figures?
Loved it. Wish I could paint like that.
Definitely worthy of the display boxes.
One thing I’m interested in seeing is Archaon with more of a red fiery glow under Dorghars black scales.
I would love to see a wood tutorial. I know there's the shield video, but it would be cool to see how you would drybrush a building or a ship.
I used to think my twin hobbies of painting miniatures and bouldering was an odd combination. It's good to know im not the only one 😅
I followed your advice and dry brushed a metallic bronze armor. The result was so good I didn't even need to do all the detail work I planned to do. Thanks for another solid time saving tip!
!!!!! Winner, you must have done a great job :). Happy to help!
the things ive learned about dry brushing from watching your videos are priceless
Cheers man, plenty more to come in the future, perhaps in the next vid ;)
When the soothing music and voice-over mix with how satisfying the painting is. 👍 Added to my ADHD and trying to decompress from a long day yesterday, I nodded off 😂 Time to rewatch from where I took a peaceful nap.
HAA! We've done our work! We're trying some new stuff which you should see (and/or hear) on the channel fairly soon, might make your bed-time playlist 😅
Very solid, I feel like the gold/bronze bits on the horse's armor could've started with a bit more juicy gold to make them shine more but overall hella nice. Always a pleasure watching.
Awesome result. That silver really looked amazing!
Cheers, buddy!
I wish I'd found this video before I glued the whole model together! I will give the approach a good go, but imagine it will be a hybrid approach now.
Incredible work as always, getting 99% of the results for a fraction of the time is a huge win as most of us hobby folks have a weighty backlog.
Painting models that I print out is a skill I am slowly learning. I happened to run across your channel and I've learned so much!!! Keep up the great work!!!
I put this on as background noise while I did some long needed work, suffice it to say, I did not get anything done as planned. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and definitely had some "holy crap, I'm stealing that" moments. The comment sent to you about the background was spot on. Your glamour shots at the end were excellent. Consider me subscribed. (p.s. I have also recently purchased one of your texture palates and brush sponge. I see I need to go back for a set of D series brushes).
Ive been really enjoying painting my wolves, mostly following your video with drybrushing and then finishing them with mostly my 0. Your brushes and techniques just fills me with this weird confidence i can use to get stuff done despite these being basically my first models. Love what you're doing!
Wonderful job! I love the dry brushing methods you use. I’ve learned a ton from you already. 👍🏻
Brilliant tutorial, thanks! 🙂
You're welcome, buddy, cheers!
Great tutorial and give it up for painters who climb!
I really like the magenta, it gave it an eldritch look. I really enjoy your work. Thank you.
Beautiful. I enjoyed the video very much!
Thanks, my man!
Awesome work Byron, looks amazing!
Cheers, Matthew, I was really pleased with it in the end :)
Fantastic! love your work. You’re an incredibly talented individual.
Cheers, buddy!
Amazing!!! I love the color of your eyes so much better than the box art
I think you'd love the AK True Metal range of "wax" metallics. They work just like oils, are thinned with mineral spirits and work incredibly well with other oils and enamels. They're soooo good for drybrushing metallics and you can get amazing blends. Would love to see your take on them.
nice to see that you went your way to paint it or you might have done it and not been happy ,but all painters deep down are not all ways happy with what they do ,but i always say it's always better to have a go than to back off and wish you had tried ,some time when i paint a figure i end up hitting a brick wall then i can't get started again because i have spent to much time thinking about the detail ,then wished i had started a different way but i'm now getting myself back on track as with me watching more videos on you guy's making models and painting them has put my mind set back on track ,the model you have done has turned out awsome cause you have had a go at painting like the guy's that have been doing this for years and doing experiments with different painting techniques for years to so the end results have turned out nice job!...................
Loved it. Very helpful techniques, and I really connected with attention span part
My man, it's such a thing to manage, starts with expectations, and actually, I've found that a deadline/time limit (while sometimes a necessity) makes more more impatient, and struggle further.
If I start and am like 'today you try and learn NMM on this leg' I finish fine, so it's not even about finishing the mini, it seems.
Heads are funny things, aren't they :)
Your drybrush techniques helped me greatly with my Dreadknight. I never thought to drybrush over a wash, but the results are perfect. I was trying desperately to get the Grey Knights blue shading with just Drakenhof Nightshade overtop of Iron Hands Silver, and it was WAY too loud. Had I drybrushed over my old models, it might have fixed my problem. I keep trying to replicate Tabletop Ready's Grey Knights - I love his aesthetic. Your technique helped get me there.
Looks almost identical! Great job!👍🏽👌
Fantastic video, I actually prefer your paint job with the magenta over the GW box art. Very inspiring 👌🏽
Amazing video! Great work. I'd love to see your take on more Seraphon especially Kroxigor
I do looove those dinos :D
That was awesome
Cheers, buddy!
I noticed your subs went way up almost 100,000 lets goooo!!!
Nearly there! :D :D
Looking great! Drybrushing my Necrons has been my go-to for army painting since I started back with 40k back in 2021. But this just makes me realise I can push my character models so much further.
Also, I went back to your previous OSL video yesterday to check the colour recipes again, and noticed I had the top comment. Were you being serious about top comment getting some brushes? 😳
It's always great to push a character model :)
We were! DM us on Instagram, and support will take it from there!
Dry brushing best painting method for metallics
Can’t wait for this!
Quite new to painting overall but watching these videos has really helped with my confidence and building intuition as a painter. Would love to see some work done on larger tyranid models as well, as they differ quite a lot to the smaller ones I've been starting with.
The big ones are intimidating, but also nothing to worry about! We'll definitely cover some big stuff in the future :)
Another great and more comprehensive tutorial. Do you have any plans to revisit any previous tutorials and go more in depth on various techniqies and hows and whys?
Also, as a tackle requeat. If it fits in with what you do. Could you show us a Lord of Change or Magnus the Red. As they are in my mind good examples of models that feature large areas of both skin and feathered/ winged textures. Or Marines with heavy trim.
Great results with metallics. Unbelievable in the amount of time it took.
Thanks, Darren, luckily the mini is 90% metal, worked out well for this one!
What a zoggin gem this guy
So where did "you can't drybrush metallics" come from? We were doing it in 1995 and before. Good video
I'm with you there, it seems quite a lot of stuff has been forgotten/needs rediscovering!
😮beautiful job Byron , and I preferred the osl colour , I think it made the model pop .
I know you have your preferred paints , but have you thought of make your own line of paints and washes ? You could call them “ recess paints “ 😂
We might be working on something 👀👀 ;)
Can you do a video on the best approach to freehanding? Like paint consistency and alike.
Model turned out great and the self-made backdrop just adds 'that' bit to the overall thing. Wonderful piece.
Ohh good idea. Some of the writing ive seen on models is spot on. Mine looks crap.
@@darrenj3720have you tried using a pen rather than a brush? Obviously it's easier as it's more natural to us. Many people use these specific pens that have tiny nibs and archive ink (apparently archive ink doesn't fade over time). If you are interested I could look up the name on mine. Other benefits of the pens is that you can get black and sepia ones, and it doesn't reactivate and run if varnished, unlike regular ink. Great for control doing eyes too.
I'm due some practise on this myself, I'll take some notes :)
Would love to see you tackle a titan from Adeptus Titanicus or some tanks from Legions Imperialis when it is released.
Great, I love it. Ok, seems like I need to buy separate brash for metric dry brashing 😅
Wish I could get those brushes.
We post them worldwide! :) store.artis-opus.com/collections/series-d-drybrushing
I think what you are reading as vertigris on the armour is actually the blue glow of magic as well. Vertigris wouldn't form like that on the mount's armour - especially without a whole lot more rust on the steel/silver looking bits. That's why they have the same blue for the glowing bits. :)
That said, another great video of this type!
You don't think the GW one was meant to be it? Interesting, I hadn't thought of that!
Thanks man, really pleased with the result, it pays to really put the hours in every so often :)
@@ArtisOpus I hadn’t really looked at the model, but, as you talked about it and I looked at it in detail it’s the thought I had. Now, from listening to Peachy talk about inside GW, I realise this might be an oversight on the painter’s behalf, but I’d rather assume the colour alignment is evidence for it all being glow.
11 hours, too much time to wait!!!
Hope we were worth it :D
I'd love to see this done for something that's not metallic on metallic. Like a 40k chaos marine where it's usually colored armor with metallic trim.
Detail work! We will definitely have some in some future 'full mini' tutorials :)
You inspired me to crack out a cheap make up brush to dry brush a werewolf … I managed it 99% (a little normal painting to hit the eyes and inside the mouth)… super proud thank you
:) Our pleasure!
Will there be a tutorial on how to paint/dry brush Nurgle armor?
Thanks
Amazing job! Is there any chance for you to make a video about drybrush paiting a human skin, especially on female figures? I enjoy your videos very much! All the best! 😄
Your videos have helped me so much with my painting, thanks for that! What is the handle you use when you paint the horse's head?
Hey buddy, it's the redgrass games one, it's OK, but it's a little too 'tall' for my liking (base touches desk), but occasionally it gets some use
Where do you get those little cups you use for washes? And how can we get that standee thingy for your instructions/reference/tablet?
that was fun to watch, great model. I'm confused what they were doing with the armor there though because it looks like gold but it has verdigris on it so I'm guessing it's supposed to be copper? i didnt think gold turns green
Bit of a coincidence this coming out right as I get my hands on this guy... I'll be sure to re-watch this in a years time when I get to painting him :P Here's a question though. Given all the different variants of golds and silvers, how do you decide which ones to use? Just ol faithful or is there method to the madness?
I will start drybrushing very soon. But what i had to ask. After a session u have to clean your pallet right? Some creators build a pallet out of old plastic pieces or so. I thought that would be very hard to clean up. but if you dont do that then the pigments are still there right and you will eventually reactivate them in the next session. Also if you use very light colors that could be a problem or isnt it if the old paint is totaly dry?
Back with another questions since my last one. Do you think paints to could benefit either from adding drying retarder and/or flow improver, either directly into the paint or a bit in to the bristles of the brush? I wonder if this could help the paint go off smoother.
I made the mistake of gluing the rider to the mount - made painting a lot more tricky :)
It really does! I don't know why they encourage it so much 😔. Hope he turned out well, though!
Oh I misunderstood I thought you did the 7 day version too I didn't catch you saying that was done by the Eavy Metal team. Honestly after looking at the two side by side at 50:53 I honestly prefer yours to theirs even if the gold horse armor isn't as orange as the boxart, I like everything else more.
I screwed up my first Eternus by gluing him all together. After watching a couple videos of him, including yours, I can see he's definitely meant to be subassemblied. Guess I'll just use him for practice where I can in trying this method.
Would it also be possible to keep the black armor (prime chaos black) of the standard chaos knights and drybrush it with something like eshin grey to make it pop more, but still have the black armor "painted" in no time and still look good?
Amazing work mate! Its looking so smooth. I’m on painting 2k army slaves and I have two genuine questions that I hope you can answer and help me understand
- how I can make that process for a large army? I mean how I can put everytime the equal amount of mixing black and silver to make all the model the same?
-It’s possible use a more fluid liquid for that kind of day brush? I’m rally want use Vallejo Metal color like Burn Iron (very dark iron)
Thank you and sorry for the long question 😊
Hey buddy :) thanks!
1 - make mixes, but honestly the variation is so small I don't think it matters too much
2 - they work fine, they are strong so just use a very small amount to avoid things being too 'wet'
Good luck!
Very, very nice. Love them.
good to know I'm not the only one that loses attention once all the hard work is done
It always happens when we have to slow down! There's probably something to be said for ending one session there, and starting the next wit ha different expectation (of speed of painting)
Even pro painters who have won competitions will say that GW boxart style is almost unnecessarily detailed and clean - award winning pieces aren't painted to the same standard. It's all for GW's high res, up close photography.
Results such as in this video aren't just hobby hacks or "good enough" - this IS professional level results which is far more achievable than folks have been led to believe. (Thanks to how publicized the 'Eavy Metal" paint style is.)
When that palette is full of paint do you reprime it or how does it work practically for longevity?
It being full of paint doesn't matter (there's no negatives). I like the 'fresh start' of black though, it lets me test colours on the same prime I use on my minis, and gives eyes an easy focus on the mini :).
I definitely recommend priming at the beginning, what you do from there is personal preference though, asides from wiping off any dust, nothing is 100% necessary
When you were highlighting the leather do you think it would look good to stipple a texture on the leather and then edge highlight or would that be too much?
That would be fine! If you stipple like it's worn you might want to do a 'stutter' highlight, a broken line, to suggest age, some people do scratches from the edges, too.
@ArtisOpus thanks I will give that a go
Hello how did you do the skulls? Not sure if i missed it in the video, ty!
Hey buddy, I can tell you how I *should* have done them 😅 I wasted a lot of time...
Basecoat lighter than you would think, wash all over. Repeat basecoat on raised areas, add ivory and highlight.
That's the best method, you can add more steps or go to white if you need. Working from brown basecoats is a thing, too.
2:29 What is exactly that thing you're using??
man i wish i could be half as good as you are
Can you dry brush Tamiya paints?
How do you push yourself through those barriers where you find yourself stalling in motivation??
Great question, I am a nerd, so let's get some evidence-based stuff in, as well as 'other' :D:
1.) Knowledge that I will be really pleased if I do
2.) Remind myself that I am still getting to paint!
3.) Maybe most importantly, knowledge that this happens on most paint jobs, and I have pushed through before, and it has turned out great
4.) Once I finish I will get to try something else
5.) Audiobooks! That way I am at least enjoying the book, even if I am on a 'chore' bit of the mini
@@ArtisOpus
Thank you for responding. I even find just starting to be difficult some days. Took me 20 plus years to pick a brush up again and I still find the same road blocks as I did before. Small pivot though, your evolution of dry brush techniques has come soooo far from where I first learned the technique. Incredible. Thank you
I have always drybrushed my metallics, since 1988. I didn't realise it was a "can't do" thing.
It's amazing what passes from knowledge, and what is presumed when newer ways to paint (contrast etc) become the norm. I think also people being told 'metallics kill brushes' on repeat is responsible for a lot of incorrect assumptions.
@@ArtisOpus I'm not a fan of contrasts. I find the finish is too coarse and I get better results with inks and layering. But then I'm captain old school I guess. Still, good enough for Bronze at the Warlord Games day painting contest lol
Curious if there is any concerns with the metalic paints degrading the dry brushes iv heard to avoid using metalics with nice brushes as they can be quite rough on brushes so iv been avoiding using metalics with my series D but after watching this I have a feeling that isn't a concern
Are there any special considerations if using inks instead of paints for dry brushing? Specifically want to try this for white
It'd only really work for stippling probably, but IMO you're better using a carefully diluted potent white acryllic, some inks have odd properties.
@@ArtisOpusThanks for the reply! I've been using inks to mix highlights/shades from base colors to minimize the impulse to buy every color under the sun so i was wondering if the inks could be usable for dry brushing. Appreciate your videos, they're super helpful and encourage me to a lot.
Any chance on how to do a fast but effective black cloth? I’m going to be tackling 20 Soulblight Gravelords Black Knights soon?
Absolutely, search our channel for 'black cloth' :D it's an oldie, but it's a good one!
@@ArtisOpus cheers
Can anyone help me with a tine stamp for when he puts the white into weapons runes before adding the pink?
Hey buddy, it was just white diluted with water and carefully 'dropped' in with a small brush (Series S 00), nothing to worry about, it can be repeated if needed.
I have a question regarding paints: can I use Citadel? and why don't you use Citadel in your painting videos?
You can absolutely use citadel, I use them all the time! They're probably my most used range, and are generally great for dry brushing due to not being ultra matte
@@ArtisOpus thanks for replying. Though your techniques are light years ahead of my level right now (I just started painting mini this month), I still find your videos immensely helpful. Maybe in the future I can apply what I learn from you to my minis .
Man, I hate it when I miss a bit of horsey foot armour. 🤣
Don't we all 🙄🙄🙄
Oil Washes FTW. Super easy and much faster than acrylics.
We'll be aiming to cover them later this year, plenty of love for them, and such a perfect accompanyment to drybrushing.
I wanted to ask where do you live that in the middle of summer you are wearing a wool sweater and a flannel shirt? In Antarctica? ;)
😅 this one's actually an old recording, the UK had a pretty miserable Feb, so Antarctica isn't far off!
Would this work on stormcast
Absolutely, search our channel for plenty of Stormcast tutorials to back it up :)
I just realized I haven’t been subscribed. Fixed that.
Honestly, I wonder how much difference 7 days of drybrushing would make compared to 7 hours on the finished model.
New challenge for Byron. Spend a month on one model. Could be interesting.
@@darrenj3720 Please no... 😳😆
Ha. The editing would take years.
@@thechunkydrummerSorry! :D
Well, it could be live streamed, like a AO version of Big Brother? That way there's less editing
@@Himle_ You have broken the rules so for the next 3 hours all your Huldra has been replaced with Macragge…
Bob Ross would say… happy accident
Good? Yes. Insane? No.
I'll take good, any day :)
To be fair, most 'insane' paint jobs are just 'good' paint jobs with lighting tricks and a lot of photo editing. For the time this takes, I'd rate as insane.
First 😁
God this paint job suxs! No, its not your fault, you have done a good job copying the reference of the box. Its the GW original itself. You should have painted the mini ... NVM.
Do you only do Warhammer/Warhammer 40K miniatures? I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to see your expert skills applied to something like BattleTech mechs or Dragons from Reaper. Your work is stunning, and seeing it applied to non-GW figures will help showcase it better.
We've done some SWL in the past, I love their vehicles, and may well return to some again. We're always trying to reach the most people with our techniques, so it's about what mini is going to showcase that technique, the best, and to the widest audience.
We do have some upcoming plans, and terrain too, which I feel is completely underused, and underrated in general, GW or no :)
@@ArtisOpus I'm not familiar with SWL. Are those videos in your playlists?
As a new painter, the jump cuts through steps makes your content worthless to me. Saying some words that mean nothing to a new person, putting your brush to model once then jumping ahead accomplishes nothing.
Can you provide some timestamps buddy?
This particular video isn't really aimed at new painters. Lots of more advanced things used and discussed.
I would highly recommend you check out his earliest videos. Drybrushing is such a strong, effective technique so it's perfect for beginners, and will last and grow as your skills grow. Also I would strongly advise anyone to learn this way of drybrushing as it differs from the way others such as GW teach it. The results you will get are a world above if you use his methods.
