  • American cities were not always racially segregated. Minneapolis is no exception. But in the early 20th century, something called the ‘racial covenant’ began remaking the geography of cities across the country. These covenants were legal clauses that prevented people of color from owning or occupying property. And while covenants have been illegal for over a half-century, their legacy lives on. Today, Minneapolis has some of the worst racial disparities in the United States. In this talk, Kevin Ehrman-Solberg shows how these contemporary disparities are rooted in the spatial practices of the past. Kevin Ehrman-Solberg is a co-founder of the Mapping Prejudice Project at the University of Minnesota's Borchert Map Library where he and a small team have built the first-ever comprehensive visualization of racially biased covenants for an American city. Their project maps restrictive deed covenants-agreements made during home purchases-that enforced racial segregation in Minneapolis until the Fair Housing Act of 1968 outlawed such covenants. Despite this landmark legislation, to this day the vast majority of the nation’s neighborhoods remain deeply segregated. As an active proponent of the digital humanities, Ehman-Solberg interrogates the intersection of space and historical narrative. Born and raised in the Twin Cities, Ehrman-Solberg has recently completed his Master of Geographic Information at the University of Minnesota, and is now a graduate student in the Department of Geography, Environment and Society. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Mapping Prejudice is an amazing project. And the new TPT (Public television) documentary "Jim Crow of the North" - based on their research - is exceptional.

@mercierbeaucoup -- I agree that the PBS Documentary "Jim Crow of the North" provided more in-depth research details and could clarify many of the questions on this reply string.

Thanks Kevin: I appreciated the PBS Documentary "Jim Crow of the North", which provided more in-depth details to support your Tedx Talk. Would your UM team be willing to release an update on the progress of your findings since last year? Some may also be interested in seeing an overlay of the Minneapolis city map impacted by the recent riots.

If not shared with Mn Board or REALTORS, it needs to be. This should be part of Fair Housing classes for the next required classes. This was very eye opening, I have been a REALTOR for over 35 years and did not know this

This was really informative, a lot of stuff I didn’t know. The end left a lot more to be desired. Step 1: acknowledge it. Step 2: acknowledge it again. Step 3: did you grow up in these areas? Step 4: what are you going to do? .....ok, ok, no, ehhh 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is one idea that I had for first time home buyers:
    Anti-Geographic Segregation Loan (AGSL)
3-10% down payment required for mortgage
    Federally backed 0% APR Loan
Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) spread throughout life of loan depending on down payment amount.
Eligible to those moving to a street that has an ethnicity primarily different from their own based on 2020 census data.

At 5:22 - "So once one of these restrictions gets into the property record, it's effectively there forever." So in a sense, property "covenants" were foreshadowing the blockchain. :-(

It's not until Almighty God gets a hold of us for our sins that we stop with the shenanigans and this circus act ceases to persist. Really truly the earth belongs to God and God will be silent but for so long.

I am a person of color and I believe that the quality of neighborhood does depend on it's racial constituents. Colored people don't go to school and crimes are indeed high

Shannon Lowell no evidence? Maybe you missed the systematic oppression outlined in the video. Weird, even when people see facts they can still choose to turns a blind eye.

We should want to end geographical segregation, just in general, a country that stands united is much stronger. The fact that it exists in the first place is evidence enough that we need to fix it, and any additional evidence that say we caused it to happen is just fuel for the fire.

@@williamcarlson2066 geographical "segregation"? No one is forced to live or buy anywhere. No one is FORCED to live in any circumstance. Stop making people into victims. Personal responsibility is power. Personal power = freedom. Freedom = perfect environment for positive growth and change. You can map areas for race all you want. People CHOOSE where they live. People CHOOSE where they work. Please.....😔
