Beyond just the language issue I am also bothered by how neither side of the abortion debate seems to think much about how the whole thing affects people who suffer miscarriages. I’ve also found it interesting how the terms is used differently in other languages. I learned that in Spanish the common term for miscarriage is “aborto espontáneo”. In France where I’m from, while we do often use the term “avortement” to talk about termination, we also commonly use “IVG” (which stands for voluntary interruption of pregnancy), and this is both the medical term and the term frequently used in more official settings including political debates
I feel like we’re talking about it in terms of miscarriage and TFMR a lot more recently only because legislation is really negatively impacting that kind of care. But I agree, that has historically been completely ignored, and is still something many people don’t understand! So much more of a message to spread there.
