  • Right everyone, here's a question that's asked a lot, DOOR LINTELS!
Up to a 3m Span a doubled up 8x2 bolted together is plenty strong enough and will hold the roof just fine above the doors you decide to fit.
Go above 3m, putting a flitch beam up would be recommended.
    Here's how we do it.
I hope you enjoy and most importantly, it helps!
    See you on Part 4!

Why not use a couple of clamps to square the lintel to the frame then drive your screws, it saves having to pull and push.
Thanks for posting these videos they have been a big help to me building a 2*3 metre timber workshop on the back of my garage😃

That's a good idea! Might try that on the next one 👍 Thanks very much and thanks for watching!

Hi great video, I’ve been following you and trying to do my own garden office . Just a quick question, you mentioned the lintel support is 1972mm high , and the door is 2m high, how would it fit in ? Am I missing something ? Thanks a lot . 7:04

Lintel support has a 4x2 laid ontop which you then put the lintel onto. You can see this in the video if you look how it's built. Cheers

Be careful when using an angle grinder near any upvc . I’ve seen window cills permanently stained from the rusting metal filings, the contractor had to replace the windows.

Thanks for the excellent videos, with the timber, are you using treated wood for all of the construction?

    Hi @creategardenrooms
I've watched all of your videos. You're great at explaining the detail, meticulous and very tidy.
I'm building a 5x4 garden room made up of a 1.5x4 storage room and 3.5x4 office space. I'm about to build the front wall frame, which will have two doors: 3m wide bifold and an approx metre wide door. The front wall will have 3 nibs: 300 mm, 400 mm, and 500 mm wide
Should I go for two double timber lintels, one for each door frame and supported by timber on adjacent nibs? Or am I better off going for a triple timber spanning the full 5m width of the front wall and placed on the top plate of my front wall structure? What would you recommend?
Also, are joist hangers an overkill?

Yeah just do doubled up 8x2’s over bog doors. Joist hangers are overkill if you are fixing the roof joists down properly with plenty of screws.

Hi, I'd suggest using a flitch beam which is a steel plate and timber both sides then bolted through, especially over a 3mtr bi-fold door

Thanks. I ended up using triple 5x2 timber for my lintel

Quick question, if your 4x2 is 100mm and your lintels are 45mm each , your short 10mm on the outside, when putting your osb on the outside, what do you use to pack the 10mm between lintel and osb??

    • @creategardenrooms

Timber is normally about 47mm so we just run some packers down the inside of the osb - mark where they are on the underside of the lintel so when you fix your batten you go where the packer is to stop it pulling in 👍

Thanks, just came across your channel and love it. Love seeing how other people do it.

Do you use 3x2s for your framing and roof

Or just do it properly, especially with bi-fold doors.
Always install a flitch beam which is a steel plate and timber both sides then bolted through, some of the advice your giving could come back and bite you on the backside
