I have seen this on Dell's website. I do love this one, and the hardware choices are really great (compared to most which usually gives you maybe 12-16 GB of Ram). Looking at it, a large Touch Pad, speakers on the sides, and 4 USB C/Thunderbolt 4 ports, so much like the MacBook Pro. I do wish you could choose the Artic White Color. Dell has a Dexktop Tower XPS, that gives you more choices, like a Blu-Ray reader/ writer. That Dell Laptop definitely is a big upgrade from my HP, where the GPU, Ram, Video Ram and SSD storage wise, except, I do have an HDMI, and a cd/rom drive, 3 USB-A's and a USB-C. I do have USB A devices. I am still planning to upgrade to the larger Silicon I-Mac. I love the Mac OS. As laptops, I would still go with the 16 inch MacBook Pro over any PC laptop. I already have a PC laptop, and it does have an 8th Gen processor and the TMP 2.0. It should be able to run Windows 11 when that becomes available to the Public. 3:30 Unless I've drastically misunderstood this, I've heard that the 11800H chips are also overclockable despite not having the "K"; it's down to each vendor as to whether they switch on overclocking for their laptop.
Very nice! I have the 13 XPS 2 in 1 and it has been one of the best laptops I've ever owned. I've had it for a couple of years and am going to upgrading to the new 17 here soon. The only thing I've had an annoyance with is plugging in headphones or bluetooth headphones has some sort of room reverb effect in the audio. From what I gather it's a particular audio driver and going back to an older version resolves it. It isn't heard over the speakers though. I've just never took the time to look into it. Aside from that, I've loved it. Can't wait to see the huge 17" screen coming from the 13 lol.
Cheers Tom… helped me to go ahead with purchase of the XPS 17 - spec’ed to the max! First Laptop I’ve bought in 17years (first year uni) lol… I have to buy my wallet some flowers!
In theory, it should not, but if you do return due to an issue, having opened up the laptop means they will be wary of giving a straight repair. Make sure you open up carefully and do not do any alterations other than SSD. I would just buy the highest storage?RAM you need and use an external drive.
Hi! I own a XPS 17 9700. Love the laptop and you can certainly use it on your lap, but it isn't all that comfortable when you want to use it for a long time and it's sitting on your lap. It is kinda heavy for that. I am 1.90 metres tall. It is a great laptop, but I would always use it on a desk or table. It is not one that you pull out when your in the train or something. It is exactly the same size of most older 15" laptops (at least the ones we had around here in the home back in the day). Hope this helps! :-)
@@Tugennov Maybe. I'm using a 16" laptop though, and I have no problems using it on my laptop whether in trains, during flights, or in my office. I would say the experience is largely subjective and little to do with your physique as the first guy implied.
So what have they screwed up this time? BIOS? GPU thermal limits? DPC latency? There's always something with the XPS line that sneaks by the tech TH-camrs that are distracted by the shiny things. And if they haven't broken stuff on release, they'll push an update later that will. Signed, a disgruntled former XPS 15 owner.
Was really hoping to see if you experienced any battery drain while plugged in and gaming. That was the main issue which drove me away from the 9700, though some people have reported it’s fixed on the 9710.
@@Thetechchap The laptop weighs 1.3 kg, half the 2.55 kg of XPS 17. The price is also cheaper by $270. LG Gram 17 ($1800) + eGPU Case ($300) + RTX 3060 ($330) = *$2,430* XPS 17 (i7/16/512/3060/4K) = *$2,700* But when this becomes a real killer combo is if you need a 2-in-1 function. LG Gram 16 2-in-1 or Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 15 paired with an eGPU is more convenient than carrying the super heavy XPS 17 AND a 13" Tablet (like iPad Pro 12 / Tab S7+ / Surface Pro) in your bag. You also get a big canvas to use the Stylus with. So that's the setup I would personally choose, because of how lightweight and versatile 15 inch Windows Tablets have become.
Next generation intel CPUs(which are actually quite a step up due to extra 2 cores and the switch from 14nm to 10nm process) and the 30xx series GPUs which are also quite a large spec bump(assuming you go from 2060 > 3060). I'm not sure there are any major changes outside of that
Thank you for the review, great as always. Do you have plans to review Dell Latitude 9520? From what I've seen XPS line is worse than the Latitude 9xxx series but would like to hear your opinion.
Any performance throttling with the i9 chip, 4k panel and RTX 3060 chip? I heard the max power output out of this computer was 130 watts, so I was curious if it'll still run at full throttle or if it'll lower performance when under strain.
I've got the 9700 and it's awesome! I would certainly research the gaming orientated alternatives if I was buying now though. But the screen, oh my goodness the lovely screen.....
Honestly, I'm still rocking a maxed out XPS15 7590 with an NVIDIA 1650 and 64GB of RAM and this thing is still a beast. My only and chief complaint is the battery life consumption of the OLED screen.
When the 4k screen consumes so much power, would it help to set it to 1080p for the days where you need long batterylife and only use 4k when plugged in or runtime isn't as important as an nice sharp image? How much hours of additional runtime could you get this way? Would it be comparable to the native 1080p screen?
My 9700 from last year has this issue where it draws power from the battery when playing games even when it's plugged on with the charger. Also, if you don't angle the laptop appropriately and game, it will shut automatically because of the heat. However, if I dock it and the laptop has room for cooling, it will be okay. I wonder if this was fixed in the 9710?
Drawing power from the battery is not a defect. Dell did this intentionally so the charger won't be too big. It's the same 130W charger that comes with the XPS 15. It would've been better if the buyer can pick which charger they want.
@@MBAPresents Not a defect, it's a major design flaw. I didn't buy the XPS last year because of that reason. Other companies offer multiple sizes for the charger and STILL manage to keep power in check.
Nice video. It's now the 2nd video talking about the trackpad. I really wish OEMs would follow Apple tracks which is make something that works without minor quirky things. If a user pays more than 3K for a laptop then it better deliver
whats the output of the included power adapter?? for my xps13, they provided a measly 45W which means it drains the battery under moderate-high load even if it is plugged in
I believe it's 130W, and some have reported some battery drain while charging when both the CPU and GPU are maxed out. Idk if this has been fixed since then.

A USB A, hdmi port and number pad would be nicer on the larger form factor for me. Doesn't really matter though as I can't get past the Dell quality issues I've had in the past.
Were your colors accurate out of the box or did you need to calibrate it? I'm having the worst oversaturation on my XPS 17 (9710 4k) and Dell is refusing to help in any way.
Beautiful laptops Tom.. i hope i can buy it someday.. for now.. spending £3k on a laptop is just too "kicking my butt so hard and hurting my stomach so much"
How many watts does the laptop use excluding the gpu (70w) and cpu (45w)? I’m worried about the 130w power brick not being enough to run both at max power.
It probably won't if I had to guess as it might need an extra 5-10W or so. I have gone for this spec but there is no activity that I will be engaged in where both the GPU and CPU will be maxed out. Gaming doesn't cap out the CPU from my understanding and if I'm going to be taking the CPU to 100% I won't be using the GPU. I will say that the figures you have provided aren't underestimates of their power usage from my understanding. The CPU can use more than that but under sustained loads it will keep to that 45W figure and the 70W figure for the GPU is its max usage, this leaves you with 15W for the screen, fans, SSD, RAM, speakers, inefficiency in the PSU etc and I just can't see that being enough
I have the laptop if anyone on has utilities that will provide the power draw of both I can have a look. I have the 3060, 1200p screen, 11800H and 32Gb of Ram
@@thecolossus4244 It's been working well so far. I think I get 8 or so hours out of it with video streaming. I'm expecting that to improve slightly with updates in the near future as processors are always getting more efficient from a work done/power perspective. I'm not aware of any issue with the device not sleeping correctly. When I press the power button it stays asleep as expected but I've not monitored the battery over a day of sleep to see how much it drops One thing I have noticed is the colour calibration is a bit weird. I don't have a better way of describing this but it's almost like the colours are too saturated, additionally whites look a bit more yellow than I would expect. I don't think this is a flaw of the panel but it doesn't look like I'd expect. In terms of gaming it performs ok although I notice the lack of adaptive sync and 144hz refresh rate. In Minecraft I'm able to get mid 40s average frame rate with RT on with a new world. I haven't really played much to give an opinion on it. The fans ramp up but no more than you'd expect with a form factor like this
The biggest issue is that Intel chips are still 10nm chips while Apple is about to move to 3nm and is producing 4nm chips at a significant performance boost and a much better thermal performance. I am hoping the 12th gen chips are better but so far they have only produced desktop chips and no laptop chips in 12th gen. I suspect we will be waiting for another 2 to three generations before that happens.
I love your reviews, mate, and your reviews in general, too, but please do not make it seem like color gamut directly equates to more color accuracy. The two are not the same thing, I can easily combine a spectacular color gamut with wildly inaccurate colors (in fact that is rather often the case with uncalibrated gaming screens when watching sRGB-mastered content). This is often miscommunicated on TH-cam and I'd like my favorite channels to not make this mistake, please :D Another thing: I hope I did not miss it, but does this still come with the "power feature" of the original model, in where the battery is tapped into under full load, because the PSU does not offer sufficient power?
I have a 2020 HP Probook as my travel companion and a Full Fat Desktop with a 34 inch 3400x1440 monitor for productivity . Would I like to have the XPS , yes absolutely! Would I buy one , probably not as I don’t need all that power when I am on the road .
I'm torn....as I have the Dell XPS 15' [9560]...its suffered some sort of internal damages, as I came back into my office in the den after making coffee to find wispy white tendrils of smoke coming from the rear, after rushing to disconnect that power cord from the device, tried powering it back on but nothing. took the bottom plate off and there are burn marks on the interio, now...I have this thing maxed out with a 2TB SSD 32GB of RAM and that awesome i7....I don't think I wanna "move up" to the more recent models as I believe this model I have is the last one to include the Ethernet jack. But I dunno where to send it for repairs...any advice from the community would be greatly appreciated!!
I'm gonna just answer this question now... yes. Yes it was. So long story short I got a Dell Inspiron 16 plus first because it had a lot of similar features but at a more reasonable price... but I've been having problems with the track bad and turns out the damn thing wont let me factory reset it- I can't use the option to download windows from the could and local instal just brings me to the advance start up trouble shooting section and even then it doesn't give me the option to reset it. So I ended doing what I should have done in the first place... getting a refurbished Dell XPS 17 (1TB os storage,16gb of ram, UHD+ display) and returning the Inspirion 16 plus. It's a shame because the 16 plus was actually quiet nice in a lot of ways. The screen was also beautiful with realitively similiar bessles and while they keyboard wasn't the best it was still nice to type and the speakers were decent and it had surprisingly good battery life, but it can't compare to the XPS 17. The screen itself was worth the money, but add to just an overall better build quality and speakers and keyboard and the list goes on and on. This was one of the best purchases I've made and I feel confident this is going to last me a long time.
Is the touchscreen really useful? Because I prefer matte screens and I think this one is only available on the non-touch version. Can you confirm that the touch screen is not matte?
Does it support VR (a Valve Index)? My previous XPS 15 didn't even though it had a Thunderbolt with DisplayPort because there wasn't a direct connection to the Nvidia GPU.

Came back to your review again. If you, or someone reading this, would reply to my last post just below that would be great, but either way, I have another question. You describe the Avira Free Security For Windows download, it sounds like a really good choice for security with some great features, so much so that I was thinking about using it rather than the McAfee that comes 1 year free with the laptop, but something occurs to me about the Avira. If the Avira is free, how do they make their money, will I be inundated with advertising and such if I use them? Any thoughts? Thanks. (I had been trying to decide if I'd just use the McAfee or buy Webroot, but now I'm considering that Avira)
There was an intel video driver update released December 3rd, but Dell has not yet released a custom version of the driver yet. So until they do you will continue to see the WDM Windows display manager using 778Mb of RAM instead of 90Mb of RAM. It should be released through support assistance unless your computer is no longer under warranty then you will have to run Dell update from the start menu. You could use the Intel driver update but that results in replacing the Dell custom version of the display driver with the intel version which lacks the customizations and may affect features and performance. I have not been able to find out what the customizations are.
How have you set up your colour profiles? I'm getting banding. Then when I turn off Premier Colour I get less banding but everythings crazy saturated. Then I tested the gamma and it's way low. 1.3 on average. How can I get it to perform at 2.2. It just seems an absolute mess for me. Any ideas?
You are also getting a HEATER.... I have the 9710 Nad the one thing that I dislike the most is how hot the entire laptop gets when rendering a video or doing anything processor intensive. The other thing that I hate is how the edge of the laptop digs into my wrists when typing or using the track pad which becomes pretty painful and marks me
Its a shame they eliminated the 1650 Ti and didn't replace the choice with a 1650 Super ie the Intel Xe graphics at least. That was the configuration I got for the previous gen, and it serves me well as a productivity machine. There are reports of overheating issues as well from some reviewers and the trackpad stability in the lower-left corner and its ability to recognize clicks in the lower-left corner. Since my machine is only for casual use, I haven't encountered issues, but XPS quality is still not at the level of a MacBook and it needs to be since that is its market competition. I can promise even with the vapor chamber cooling you won't be able to access half the i9 performance due to thermal throttling.

I plan to have a Mac and I will keep the HP for Windows. That way, I will have both OS's, and I have the I-Pad Pro 12.9 XDR, with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil. I saw you have one two in the beginning of your video. Nice Cat, at the end of the video.
I've had mine for about a week now. Just got into some video editing this morning. Like butter! No regrets!
3:30 Unless I've drastically misunderstood this, I've heard that the 11800H chips are also overclockable despite not having the "K"; it's down to each vendor as to whether they switch on overclocking for their laptop.
Undervolt would be much more convenient, especially on the 15" model with its mediocre thermals :(
Getting a new job in a couple weeks and I'm gonna treat myself to one of these. I've never had an expensive laptop like this so I'm pretty excited.
@@Switchfront I'll try my Bluetooth headphones when I get mine and DM u if I get the same issue

The track pad is almost as big as an S21 ULTRA 🤯😍
I getting precision 5760 because it is the same as Dell XPS 17 with xeon and a quadro
Cheers Tom… helped me to go ahead with purchase of the XPS 17 - spec’ed to the max!
First Laptop I’ve bought in 17years (first year uni) lol… I have to buy my wallet some flowers!
Thank you for the video! Are you planing to review Asus ROG laptops? M16 in particular?
Great review!! Thinking about buying an XPS 17. Does opening the laptop to do upgrades yourself void the warranty?
Not in my experience. I've used warranty on an XPS that had the ssd, wifi card and ram upgraded by me and they didn't make an issue out of it.
In theory, it should not, but if you do return due to an issue, having opened up the laptop means they will be wary of giving a straight repair. Make sure you open up carefully and do not do any alterations other than SSD. I would just buy the highest storage?RAM you need and use an external drive.
@@B-a_s-H Thanks!!
@@andyH_England Thanks!!
You can change the memory without trashing your warranty
Thanks for the informative video. Do you think the 17" is small enough to use comfortably on your lap instead of a desk or table?
Wouldn't a bigger laptop be easier to use the lap? With smaller laptops you need to squeeze between your legs.
@@guidho Guido, Thanks for your feedback. Cheers
@@mini9503 At some size and weight, they can be awkwardly big and heavy to use on your lap.
Maybe sketchy extended warranties this time?😉
Speaker crackling, driver issue with the intel GPU that mess up color...and many more
Sounds like tech full stop.
Been waiting for this 😁😁😁
Do ittttttt!
Was really hoping to see if you experienced any battery drain while plugged in and gaming. That was the main issue which drove me away from the 9700, though some people have reported it’s fixed on the 9710.
Yup I had that problem with the 9700 although strangely enough, it's happening less and less.
@@dextert There have been multiple BIOS upgrades though I am not sure whether this would impact this issue.
Great laptop, but my one gripe with the 17 is the weight.
Get the LG Gram 17 with a Thunderbolt eGPU, it's the best of both worlds portability and power.
@@mini9503 good idea - but that would be about 2x the price, AND heavier (combined)
@@Thetechchap The laptop weighs 1.3 kg, half the 2.55 kg of XPS 17. The price is also cheaper by $270.
LG Gram 17 ($1800) + eGPU Case ($300) + RTX 3060 ($330) = *$2,430*
XPS 17 (i7/16/512/3060/4K) = *$2,700*
But when this becomes a real killer combo is if you need a 2-in-1 function.
@@mini9503 Hopefully next gen of Surface Book will have RTX 3080.
So what's the difference between 9710 and 9700 ??? I bought the 9700 last year. What a machine. Unreal.
Next generation intel CPUs(which are actually quite a step up due to extra 2 cores and the switch from 14nm to 10nm process) and the 30xx series GPUs which are also quite a large spec bump(assuming you go from 2060 > 3060). I'm not sure there are any major changes outside of that
Hi, great video! Which usb-c hub are you using in the video @4:29?
You can have XPS 15 FHD+ with the 86Wh battery. i5 comes with the 56Wh battery but beyond that, it comes with the 86Wh battery.
Thanks for the video!
Thank you for the review, great as always. Do you have plans to review Dell Latitude 9520? From what I've seen XPS line is worse than the Latitude 9xxx series but would like to hear your opinion.
I mean this ultrabook is a piece of art the edge to EDGE display looks out of this world it is amazing
I’m a new subscriber and I’m interested in the alienware x17
I have lost faith on Dell now for both XPS and Alienware 👍👍
why?
Any performance throttling with the i9 chip, 4k panel and RTX 3060 chip? I heard the max power output out of this computer was 130 watts, so I was curious if it'll still run at full throttle or if it'll lower performance when under strain.
I've got the 9700 and it's awesome! I would certainly research the gaming orientated alternatives if I was buying now though. But the screen, oh my goodness the lovely screen.....
How's your battery life though? That been my biggest issue. 4-5 hrs of real use.
From what I understand no manufacturer makes a OLED screen in the 17 inch form factor
I’ll get next year’s model of this baby. Gonna wait for the alder lake versions of the i9. Also hoping to see an oled screen on next year’s model 😄
Great review 👌do you think this exact laptop with 16 gb Ram is good for stuff like blender and working with unity to do game development? (3D)
Blender? Yes I'd be fine exceot in extreme circumstances
Unity? You'd might wanna stick 32gb for the headroom
@@bl00dkillz yeah I consider buying the 16 gb version and upgrading it myself later on
My 9700 from last year has this issue where it draws power from the battery when playing games even when it's plugged on with the charger.
The USB is limited to 100W, this is the issue.
@@catalin. XPS 17 has a proprietary charging port which is the cause of the issue.
@@mini9503 it has the same issue like the last year, the laptop remains without battery while is is plugged if you use it fully!
It is 130W. I read on Notebookcheck that the it does not drain but also does not charge under heavy load. So it's ok for me.
Today....i was trying to edit a video on my laptop...and for 1 minute video...it takes around 1.5/2 hr ..😤.. I literally stopped editing...i wast to frustrated...!...🤧....I hope.. one day...i can aslo afford one of this laptop...❤️
How will you compare this with the Acer Swift 3 16 ?

@@someguy7564 How is this config I was planning on getting it? How long does the battery last and are there any battery drain issues with the i7?
@@thecolossus4244 It's been working well so far. I think I get 8 or so hours out of it with video streaming. I'm expecting that to improve slightly with updates in the near future as processors are always getting more efficient from a work done/power perspective. I'm not aware of any issue with the device not sleeping correctly. When I press the power button it stays asleep as expected but I've not monitored the battery over a day of sleep to see how much it drops
One thing I have noticed is the colour calibration is a bit weird.
The fans ramp up but no more than you'd expect with a form factor like this
My dream laptop 😍
The biggest issue is that Intel chips are still 10nm chips while Apple is about to move to 3nm and is producing 4nm chips at a significant performance boost and a much better thermal performance. I am hoping the 12th gen chips are better but so far they have only produced desktop chips and no laptop chips in 12th gen. I suspect we will be waiting for another 2 to three generations before that happens.
3:03 heyy Sara here!! And 3:06 hmm Felt ASBYT vibes here 😄
I love your reviews, mate, and your reviews in general, too, but please do not make it seem like color gamut directly equates to more color accuracy. The two are not the same thing, I can easily combine a spectacular color gamut with wildly inaccurate colors (in fact that is rather often the case with uncalibrated gaming screens when watching sRGB-mastered content). This is often miscommunicated on TH-cam and I'd like my favorite channels to not make this mistake, please :D
Another thing: I hope I did not miss it, but does this still come with the "power feature" of the original model, in where the battery is tapped into under full load, because the PSU does not offer sufficient power?
Bought this with the FHD+ screen, I'll let you know what its' like!
Niice review Tom.

Love your videos
”TGP”? Its TDP :p and it specifies energy usage, not computational strength
Great! Nice video
I prefer the the 15 inch oled. It has a beautiful display..

No G-Sync? Need it in particular for emulators etc. running at weird video freq (50.x-57.x Hz). No numpad.
The loose trackpad could be the battery expanding underneath. I had the same issue with my 9550 back in 2016.
I have a Dell XPS 13 from 5 years ago and it still works great. I don't see any reason to upgrade other than...new shiny toy syndrome.
Any ideas?

Hello! I have a question about this laptop. Is it good for architecture programs like AutoCAD, Revit, ArchiCAD, 3Ds Max? Thank you of all! :))
Buy Alienware or Dell g15 don't go for this
You are also getting a HEATER.... I have the 9710 Nad the one thing that I dislike the most is how hot the entire laptop gets when rendering a video or doing anything processor intensive. The other thing that I hate is how the edge of the laptop digs into my wrists when typing or using the track pad which becomes pretty painful and marks me

The XPS 17 is attractive, but the RTX 3060 is set by NVIDIA to halve its performance when digging up Ethereum. Thanks for the great video!
Why the hell would you buy an XPS 17 to mine? You could find two 3080s for the price of a well-spec'ed XPS 9710.
I didn't know there was such a model. Thanks!
What are the 2 games you are testing on the laptop around 4" ?
I would like to purchase 15 inch laptop with i9 processor, what do you suggest whether i should go for fhd version or 3.5k version
Listen bro I got a question , what’s the deal with some laptops touchpad left side is different from the right side ? I did a review on MSI gs75 stealth , left click button is different from right one, what’s the deal with that ?? Hope u can answer me…
