Good Video - For a EDC weapon, a 6 MOA red dot is PERFECT. Nothing else is needed! We are not trying to hit a target at 100 yards with a pistol, so grab the 407K, install it and practice with it....The End

I haven't ever used a smaller dot but I have noticed a slightly annoying (not unusable) flare with my 6 moa Holosun 407k. I have the green reticle. I've heard the smaller reticles are better at not flaring up so bad. Not to say the 6 moa dot is baaaad. But it does flare a bit.

I bought the 407K, however I underestimated how my astigmatism would impact on how I view the dot. I have tried lubricating eye drops and I still see starbursts. I wish there was a way to improve this area. Normally I have decent vision. I wear prescription glasses, but I can see well without glasses. I’ve been considering upgrading to a 507K in green.

If you want to focus on defensive shooting, you want the bigger reticle for speed. Get the 507k for the circle dot combo defensive use, then switch to the 2 MOA dot for competition and super accurate shooting.

For a rifle, I like the "donut of death" reticle with small dot when shooting at longer distances. For a handgun, I just want a dot that's easy to pick up quickly under stress, as engagement distances are typically shorter. The 407K green dot allows me to get quick, accurate hits under less-than-ideal conditions. YMMV.

First red dot for me - 507k - I wanted the circle first (for comfort) but over time as I trained, moved toward the dot. - Great little optic. Clear enough with minor refraction (almost unnoticeable) and a great introduction to dots - MUST TRAIN WITH THE DOT! - Dont expect yourself to acquire the dot every time you present until you've trained enough. - Long live the Republic!!!

A good reason to go with the 507k over the 407k is if you have an astigmatism. a 2moa will look better than a 6moa for us Astimies. Dots already look bigger to us due to the fuzzy bursts and flares we get when using dots. So the smaller the better.

Getting older I have switched over to red dots on most of my guns versus iron sights. I recently paired the 507K green dot with a S&W M&P 9 3”, and the comment on amount of feedback is spot on. I wanted something that honed in on the target and I went with the 2MOA. While this does give me more feed back, the thing I felt was worth the extra few dollars were the option. I feel the outer ring plus dot does tend to overwhelm the target, but the option to switch between the dot and ring is where the value is. I’m still working out what I like best for a permanent setting, but I’m sticking with the 2MOA for now. Best to all.

I bought the 407k for my G-48 mos for two reasons: One it's about a $100 cheaper like you said and second I have an astigmatism and the bigger dot is less distracting, rounder, not as starburst. It just looks better most of the time. Although I do have a 507c and it looks pretty good not as round, dot like as the 407k but still plenty usable.

6 moa is definitely more for a carry firearm. It’s more in your face and up close for those close quarters situations. The smaller 2 moa I see it more for a large “fighting” size pistol for competitions or just for more distance shooting. They’re both great dots just depends on what platform and what purpose you want to use it for. But of course you can use either one for self defense, to each their own and that’s the beauty of the hobby/lifestyle

Thanks, Tessa. I found your comments particularly helpful. I’m new to dots so I don’t have any practical experience. But, given your description, I would probably just opt for the single dot function and probably not use the other two on the 507K. So, the 407K might just be the best choice for me initially, especially given the price difference.

I don't have a 507k but have an Aimpoint Acro P1 on my Wilson Combat, it has a 3.25 MOA dot. I have a 407k on my 365XL. Practically I find the 407k easier to shoot, I pick up the dot faster, it doesn't shake as much so I'm not trying to fight myself to hit that perfect shot, it just appears a lot more stable. If it was a precision rifle, sure I'll take the smaller dot, but for a concealed carry handgun for myself I prefer the bigger dot. As for accuracy, my groups at 25 yards are about .5 inches larger with 407k, but you could also attribute that to the Wilson Combat which is leaps above and beyond the sig in terms of accuracy. In reality I can get center mass hits at 100 yards with my 365XL and the 407k so practical effectiveness with a handgun it makes zero difference. I guess in the end it's personal preference.

  • @ShawnHinck

Awesome video, hit most of the major points. One thing I’d also add is, larger dots are less sensitive to light condition changes so I find myself messing with the settings less even though I prefer the smaller dots. That’s why I went 407k on my 43x. Now that there’s also a 407k with a green dot, that would honestly be my go to for a carry gun because of that. Competition though, smaller 1moa dots all day long

Excellent comparison describing a larger 6 MOA sized dot and the selections available in the 507k. My new optic ready M&S9 Performance Center Shield Plus (4” ported) arrives with the Crimson Trace CTS-1500 5 MOA. Now, when I upgrade it to a stronger/clearer Holosun, your concise explanation of the difference between the features of the 407k and 507k will give me a better understanding toward a decision best suiting my desired style reticle choice to make. In the mix was the new SCS, but it is too long and only configured beginning with Glock MOS, and the new EPS Carry with its 407k/507k footprint, that overhangs my slide’s sides too much for my liking. I predict the HE507K-GR X2 will be my Goldilocks pick that’s just right.

I thought about the Dremeling of the post, and thought to myself, What's the worst that can happen? I would have to buy a new slide. That being said, I did Dremel down the 2 rear post flat to surface. The front 2 post I Dremeled down about half way beause there are 2 notches under the 507k2 to seat the front 2 post. After that I shaved down the Right screw about 4 or 5 threds as to not let it interfere with the Firing pin mechanism, You will want to make sure you shaved down enough threads before placeing Lock Tight.
10 minutes later:::: I now have a co-wittnessed 507K2 with Stock Glock sights and NO ugly plate. Holoson sits Low in the Saddle "ON THE SLIDE", (not a plate) like a optic should.. Very pleased with results and had no issues.

I have a 507k on my P365X and 407k on my G43x MOS and for sure I prefer the 407k, and the reason is simple- it's a bigger dot so I can find it quicker and has less feedback therefore I shoot faster and more accurate. If you are on the fence about a dot I really suggest you go for it, having a dot on at least one gun for dry fire is a big help. Reason being is that a dot will tell you things that irons won't...it will tell you that the shots a going to trend in a direction and then let you chase that rabbit down.
PS. A dot will also punish bad presentation, and drive you to improve in almost every aspect. Maybe that's just me though...kinda a dog with a bone when it comes to stuff like this. But seriously I would recommend picking up an optics ready pistol that interests you and grabbing an optic for it, and if it doesn't work out you can always sell it and pop a plate back on.

My first gun was a Glock 19 Gen 3, with standard Glock night sights, and I was proficient, but not a marksman by any means, so I sent the Slide out to be machined for a Holosun 407c (RMR footprint), knowing it was Holosun's optic for that size pistol, and that it had a 2 MOA dot. I've begun to adjust to the 2 MOA dot, it's more precise, but I get what you mean by too much feedback - I moves noticeably with every hand movement. It's causing me to firm up my grip, a good thing. I love Holosun, I tried every brand a local store had at the time, except RMR, they were too expensive at the time, and the Holosun won by a country mile. two years and 5,000 rounds later on the Hellcat, I just changed the battery as a preventartive, it actually was fine, it's still crisp and clear and after an email to Holosun taught me to get gunk out of the emitter opening, just as sharp. Great products.

Excellent information as always. Brought my wife to the range and she tried about 7 carry guns and we both shot the glock 48 very well.

You’ll have to modify the slide for the Holosun too, but not as much. The Shield slide has 4 mounting posts and two holes, the back posts have to be ground off and the front ones have to be ground down to take the Holosun. Otherwise, the options are limited to a bunch of optics that really don’t seem durable. I also have a 507K and a Shield plus, the slide is out right now getting the mod, luckily, it’s pretty inexpensive to have it done.

While some may like the larger/simpler 6 moa dot of the 407 for deliberate range/target shooting, the larger circle on the 507 will be MUCH quicker to get on target during a high stress closer range self-defense scenario.

I run the 507k on a Max9 and keep it on the circle dot on low intensity. Most encounters are going to be close range so I prefer the circle dot. Besides, my eyesight is not what it use to be so the circle helps acquire the target. The only thing that bothers me with it is having to press both those little buttons at the same time to turn it off. Other than that is has been great.

I’ve used dots on rifles for years just due to ease of acquisition.
(Eyes still work well enough for rifle irons)
Never have used a pistol with one, but nowadays the eyes aren’t working as well with pistol irons so putting some serious consideration to moving into a pistol dot.
I’m kind of point shooting now as I can’t get ahold of that front sight.
    (Arms have grown too short)
    As a first timer,
I’m really leaning into the 507 as from the outside it seems nicer to be able to get ahold of that big circle, and with experience be able to move into the dot, or not depending on how it works out.

I'm leaning towards milling my 43x non MOS, since cheaper iron sight adapter alternatives mean the optic will sit taller on the slide, defeating the purpose of a compact edc.

So my experience has been interesting. I own both the 407k and the 507k both in red. I did try the 507k in green as well. I have an astigmatism, and that plays a major factor on what worked for me. The Green reticle does not work for me at all, my eyes cannot focus on it and it just flares. The red versions, for my eyes at least, are very clear and easy to pick up. Now with that being said, I am experiencing some flaring in my eyes from the 407k as the larger dot just spiders out more. The 507k I don't have this issue as much due to the smaller dot size. I also can see the circle really clearly, so I tend to leave it on the circle/dot option. The 407k is new to me, and I think it will work out but I definitely prefer the 507k. Just putting this out there for others based on my experience with my eyes. Everyone is different, so please look at these in person if you can. They are very quality optics, and I will absolutely buy more Holosun products. I have a 507C as well on a range pistol that is fantastic. I think my next will be the EPS Carry multi reticle, that looks really great especially with the solar feature. A little pricier, but that closed emitter looks nice.

On a small defense pistol, I'd go with the 407K green dot. My wife has a 507C with Vulcan reticle on her G17. It's steady, maybe due to it's larger size, 10 MOA across the chevron. (I just wish it were green.) We also have a 403C with 2 MOA dot-only on a rifle, which is good for static shooting at distance. I'd prefer a circle-dot for faster, closer shooting.

Do you carry for self defense? Do you wear glasses? If your glasses fell off in a self defense situation, would you be able to quickly find the dot to acquire a sight picture? Next time you go to the range take your glasses off and try it. I personally have problems seeing just a dot, but have no problems at all immediately finding that 32 MOA circle and quickly getting a sight picture.
And in the video, that circle is deceptively small. It appears considerably bigger in your hand.

I bought a Glock 43x and put a 507k on it. i struggle to find the dot with that optic and am significantly slower than just using irons on my Glock 19. wasn’t really feeling red dots on a pistol, until i went to Cabelas one day. figured i’d check out the p365xl since i’d never held one. liked it, but what i really liked was the Romeo that was on it. it had the 6 moa dot and i was instantly able to find that dot every time. i’m thinking i might need to swap my 507k for a 407k.

    • @awesomedave8484

very possible the grip angle is not helping you on the Glock. Some find the dot easier on Sigs simply because the angle of your wrist is more natural when pointing, not the best to control the higher bore axis recoil but maybe thats something to look into.

As a marksmanship instructor in a previous life (Navy), I heard you say something alarming. I heard you say more "feedback" is a good thing (3:40). You also referred to your sight picture being shaky as "feedback". Please understand that is just not correct. A steady hand and sight picture is what is desirable. There are many reasons to pick the 407 vs the 507, price is just a minor factor. bigger dots are easier to get on target at closer ranges (point of aim is best for quick or snap shooting up to around 10' +/-) then when your target gets smaller say around 10 yrds or 30', the big dot covers around 2" where the smaller dot covers around 11/16". So the farther away you plan to shoot the smaller dot you need to shoot more accurately. The other major consideration is if you have an astigmatism, the 407 is best as it is easier to see. Oh yeah, why not mention red vs green dot? Please understand I am just frustrated with false information being disseminated as fact. It is great to have real women in this sport and with the mindset that they can protect themselves, it's empowering to them I'm sure.
