    man i have to say... i love this style of disco sampling house music... but coming up with the song structure was never the hard part... the hardest part (for me at least) is to find good songs to sample! everytime i hear the original track behind a very popular sample i find myself facepalming and saying "oh man it's just right there sitting so ready to be sampled!" i have to find ways to discover sampleable (is that a word) music!

    Brilliant! Only misses one thing (which probably is the most important thing about this track). The sidechain/mastercompressor pumping effect.

    • @skioakenfull
      @skioakenfull 9 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      +Leave The World Behind Hiya.. yeah I kicked myself for forgetting about this after the filming. It was ubiquitous in French house at the time, and remains a massively (over)used effect today. Obviously easy to achieve.. just group all the musical elements, stick on a compressor and use the kick & snare as a sidechain. I was wondering who would be the first person to flag this :)

      I know it's quite a lot of work, but perhaps we can get a part 3 to this deconstruction?

    • @StateMedia
      @StateMedia 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +aligboyakasha There isn't really a need for this. It's relatively simple to achieve in multiple ways.
      The easiest being to use the group tracks option that Ski mentions. Highlight the tracks using cmd (on a mac) and then right click to find the group tracks option. Insert a compressor on the group track and set the side chain input to the kick and/or snare. You'd need to experiment with the device parameters (threshold, ratio, attack, release, makeup gain etc) to get the pumping sound right. But it's simple to achieve.
      The other option would be to use a send bus. Send the kick and snare to a bus. On the master output insert a compressor, select the side chain input as being the kick/snare bus and adjust the compressor as described above.

    The story is wrong, Alan Braxe has found the loops and call his friend Thomas Bangalter to help him cause he has the skills, Benjamin just sing and it became the anthem to the french touch
    Plus there is no string I think, it's just a second loop in the original track

    Perhaps I'm completely missing the attraction of Push for a task like this, but there never seems a time when it wouldn't be a whole lot simpler just to do it on the computer. In fact every time I see a Push tutorial video where the presenter / demonstrator uses it to build a song (as opposed to using it to just launch clips in a live performance), it always looks like he's desperately trying to prove against all odds that he really can eat soup with a fork if he tries hard enough. Other than that, superb video, superb deconstruction and reconstruction, you guys are total legends. Thanks for taking the time to make it and share it.

  • @juschu85

    30:15 Sampler doesn't give you every feature from Simpler (anymore) when you convert Simpler to Sampler. You are loosing the new features like pitchshifting/timestreching and slicing.
    So you still can't have multisamples AND those new Simpler features at the same time (unless you use racks with multible Simpler devices). And when you convert a device from Sampler to Simpler, Simpler is in the multisample mode (no matter if you used mutisamples or not), where you can't use the new features.
    I hope they will bring all those features of Simpler and Sampler to one single device.

    It's me, the nitpicking asshole, that corrected you with 8th and 16th a year ago ;) That's not a rimshot. A rimshot is to hit the rim of the snare so hard that the drum stick bends and hits the drumhead with the side of of drumstick, producing that loud shot-like sound. What you mean is a "Cross Stick", see th-cam.com/video/a2KFrrKaoYU/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/IJbqRA4fSrM/w-d-xo.html
    Sooooo many people get that wrong.
    But anyway, Ski, your deconstructions are simply brilliant and so instructional! Ifeel so bad correcting you on details. (No, in fact it gives me a good feeling that someone who's a better musician than me by lightyears also makes mistakes ;) )

    I guess the original track was made with a Emu SP1200 like you said or a 12 Bit Akai sampler like the S900 0r S950 a much more popular brand and much more available sampler at the time both sound similar, not sure they would of quantized the sample as you did, if they just pitched it up 1 semi tone to speed it up to 124 Bpm with a little tuning no doubt (I remember the days of using hardware samplers you could spend hours just looping the samples to get them just right) you would hardly notice the slighlty out of time "live' feel of the drums which is what made it sound good in the first place. A few of the top end DJ mixers in the 90's had a filter built in maybe they used that in the original track. I loved this era of French disco house really popular in the clubs at the time.

I've got a sample loaded into simpler and would like to manipulate it in a similar way to how Ski showed here, ensuring transients are in the right place but I'm not sure if that's exclusive to the Push system as I can't seem to find the option within Ableton itself.

    Next video i hope point blank does in the near future is of using Bitwig on the new surface pro device. I don't know if they've really talked about Bitwig yet but its getting more popular its time more people really took a look at it potential . Shit its even featured all over the new microsoft commercials it would be refreshing to see them use something different besides the two major daws Ableton and Logic. Just an idea though

      +Jordan Clayton Hi Jordan.. sorry for the late reply . 'Fate' by Chaka Khan is definitely in A Minor - try playing along to the original track. The stardust track however is slightly detuned so is in between Ab and A. I don't know where G minor came from. - Maybe there are versions of the track that are pitched down? Hope that helps. Cheers Ski

      @@skioakenfull ive just found this after watching the tutoria,l i looped fate in the way you did then played it over the stardust version, sounded horrible of course so i warped in repitch mode and bang...spot on. only problem then was i followed what you did in A Minor and all chords clashed with the sample so had to detune everythink. wander why they just didnt stick to the original chords and do you think they did use A Minor then detuned after as i have done ?
