I like it. Calling it a knife works in a pinch, or if the person you're talking to already knows context around it, but it's clearly not the best option, and would be unclear to someone who wasn't already familiar.

Yeah, I called them healers all through OW1, it was they influx of new people screaming “WHERES MY HEALING!? THE HEALERS SHOULD HEAL” that made me switch to saying Support.
Specifically I think because characters like Brig and Moira NEED to do damage to heal effectively, but people assume if they have a healer near them that they’re suddenly invincible.
“Healer” implies that you’re here to heal.
“support” implies that you’re here to help.
I literally had a roadhog do what that one did in the animated short. I ulted as Diva, but didn't get enough distance on the booster so the bomb was going to be around the corner and they could have survived. But the enemy roadhog pulled my mech around the corner (after I jumped out) and it got a 4k.

Calling a support a healer is like calling a cotton swab an art tool. Like it can be but they do SO many other things.
I don't quite think that's a great analogy, a cotton swab's purpose is whatever you find purpose in it for. By contrast, using a support for just healing doesn't change the hero's purpose. Like, if you were healbotting on Soldier: 76, it doesn't make him not a damage hero.

Support is a broader term with the supports having to support the team using their damage, or utility, or healing. Tank is a broader term too, tanks aren’t only meant for soaking damage but also dishing out damage, such as a real life tank. Calling a support a “healer” is like calling a tank a “meat shield”

I agree with the support/healer distinction, but I also feel like it should be applied to other roles somehow too.
For example, a lot of new tanks will just stand in a choke with a shield up because 'taking damage and holding aggro' is what tanks do, especially in MMO games. You even see it a lot in your bronze review videos. Unfortunately 'those who take and control space' doesn't roll off the tongue, but the same concept applies.
I disagree. The point of a tank is obviously not just to take damage. Tanks in real life have weapons for a reason, they aren't just meant to be a big target (and not just because they'd be really bad at it).

Many games like MMORPGs use the 'holy Trinity' of tank/dps/and heals. That's where the 'healer' moniker primarily comes from in these discussions.
But in MMOs, 'tanking' primarily involves holding attention/agro from the enemy and soaking most of the damage while being pocket healed, so the dps can kill things. This idea of 'tanking' shows up a lot in new players who, for example, just stand with their rein shield up in a choke waiting for the team to kill everything.

@@Neyar Wanna know why they hold agro? Because they're a big target and a big threat. If all tanks did was soak up damage, nobody would bother attacking them. But if they're up in your face wreaking havoc, you're forced to deal with them. That's how they create space, and that's why they're tanks.

3:00 honestly not a bad analogy. the apple tree doesn't just give you apples, it gives you leaves, wood, bark, etc, but we still call it an apple tree
the leaves, the wood and bark make it a tree, the apples an apple tree. all the healing in the game makes them healers, but all the other stuff makes them supports. The analogy would work with a tree that gives you apples and pears, but you call it an apple tree. technically its an apple tree too, but you ignore the pears, which makes it multifruity.
@@deusex9731 disagree. healing is what differentiates the support class from other classes, the same way apples are what differentiate apple trees from other types of trees. supports are apple trees, dps are pear trees, and tanks are plum trees. if you think of it this way, the one thing all the supports have in common that is unique from all the other characters in the game (except very niche applications of things like soldier’s biotic field for example) is healing. so it’s analogous to the apple

It's a shit analogy. I'm not gonna get dragged into some fucking chicken and egg philosophy argument but apple tree's are planted, grown and harvested for apples. Apple trees aren't used for bark and lumber. The analogy suggests that the biggest contribution of all support is healing and by a huge margin. Which simply isn't the case. Some Support characters contribute more in crowd control or utility than in heals. Realistically Apple Tree's are never used for lumber more than apples.
John Cena's Mandarin reminds me of my ex-boss where they didn't bother learning the proper pronunciation at all and you struggle to understand them but everyone just goes along with it. Still props to them for learning a foreign language to a functional extent.

My cents on the Support/healer argument,
if i remember right, in the hit mmo FFxiv they have the Healer role, but those healers also do damage when they can.
So i think in Overwatch if youre teaching a new player, you can call them what you want, and still teach them that they can do more than just be a heal bot.
ngl ffxiv healer is literally just. spam your million different healing buttons, all which really do the same thing. healers usually only have 3 damage gcds, and the only actual healer utilities that i can think of is rescue, raise, and esuna which are role-wide, and expedient. everything else is just fancy ways of moving health bars

I hear the point on support nomenclature but there are a few big cues baked into OW that push people toward supports =heal bots. The logo for the role is a healing/hospital symbol and the primary stats meant to align to roles on the stat board being dps, healing, and damage mitigated. Would be cool to have a support with a kit that didn’t heal to change things up a bit.
in the earliest days of overwatch, Symmetra was a support and we need something like this back. a pure utility support
both Torb and Sym used to be supports.
Sym being area denial and barrier
Torb his turret being much more potent and him able to give teammates temporary armor.
It resulted in your team basically having 1 healer and 3 dps, and only worked well if people were coordinated.

As a support main in both MMOs and Overwatch I love it when people says "in MMO healers were supposed to just heal" as a base for the "healer=support" argument, cuz it's shows that they're a healbot even in MMOs.
In MMOs like FFXIV and WoW, a healer's actual job is to constantly juggle between healing, CC, and dealing damage. For example, White Mage in FFXIV have the most powerful healing in the game, but they also have some of the best damage potency, rescue abilities, and CC in the game. Sure, you can get away with using Afflatus for just healing up until Stormblood, but when you got to a high-level raid and you don't feel like participating in the battle when the boss only got bee's dick of health left and decided to use Enrage and wiped your party cuz you said "b b b but healers were supposed to just heal :(((", you will 100% get flamed. And possibly kicked from the party if you're playing with randos.
Every top tier healers only heal their tanks if the next attack will kill them lmao. The rest of the time is used to dealing damage. Yoshi-P ain't just putting that damage OGCDs and DoTs just for funsies.
