I usually use an spf moisturizer for everyday wear. However, there is one difference that makes me wear dedicated sunscreen if I’m going to exercise outdoors or be out in hot weather. That is that I like to use water resistant sun protection in those situations, and the spf moisturizers are rarely water resistant (at least ones I use).
I am a 68 year old woman who has been using a moisturizer with SPF since high school. Of course at that time, the thought of applying 2 creams on an adolescent face was not an option. Also I think the spf level was maybe a 7, then went up to a 15 in many products and it stayed that way for quite some time. It wasn’t until I went to a dermatologist at age 50, that she said switch to SPF 30. I’ve been using Paula’s Choice Skin Restoring Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 50 for awhile now. I’ve tried other products and will try one or two of your recommendations. I love the ease of having a moisturizer with SPF. I think it also made it so easy to be faithful to using spf even before we knew we were supposed to!! Also what’s really important to me is how the product is under my foundation. Thanks for this video!!
I like a combo moisturizer with SPF because I'm lazy and don't want that extra step of putting on a separate SPF. I just prefer a simple routine. I started trying out a moisturizer that doesn't have ab SPF and bought a separate one and find that I just tend to not always put the SPF on because, like I said, I'm lazy. I'd just prefer the combo so I know I'm getting some protection. But it was educational to find out how much i should be putting on so now i know. Oh and the only time I will wear a separate SPF and not be lazy about it is if i'm going to the beach because i know im going to be in the sun for several hours. I'll bring it with me too to re-apply as needed.
I prefer mineral sunscreen. Currently using La Roche-Posay Anthelios mineral spf 50 but I'm not a fan of this particular formulation; It gets in the creases of my eyelids and clumps together. It looks weird when I close my eyes or look down lol. Thank you for the information and options to try. I will definitely be checking them out.
I love that Supergoop Superscreen, it's my go to dedicated spf. I use it alone for quick morning use (like before the gym) but use a light, hydrating moisturizer under it for my full routine.
Dr Dray has done a similar video. But I'm pretty sure she also uses a stand alone SPF. I have dark skin so the LRP double repair SPF 30 is fine for me. I'm trying to get ahold of the black girl sunscreen kids' version since it's SPF 50 and has nice moisturizing ingredients.
I just got "CeraVe Hydrating Tinted Mineral sunscreen 30 face sheer tint" and think it is pretty wonderful, and checks ALL the boxes for me so far, including being truly affordable at $13.99. I'm fortunate that it is a nearly perfect color match to my skin. I like that it contains several treatment products too (3 ceramides, niacinamide, even a touch of HA, Salicylic Acid, and tocopherol) so truly simplifies a morning routine. It is a bit of a dewey finish, I keep an SPF mineral powder in my bag for touch-ups, so I'm good with that in summer. NOTE: (don't get confused with similarly named & packaged sunscreens in their line which leave a heavy white cast). The link to this product says 50 SPF, but it is clearly a 30 SPF.
You just answered a question I recently sent you! I love L’Oréal’s Revitalift Bright Reveal with SPF30. Gives a great finish alone and works great with my foundation!

I really like using a moisturizer with sunscreen as a base sunscreen. I’ve been using cetaphil combination skin moisturizer with SPF 35. I like it because it’s affordable and I can put it on my face first thing in the morning without really thinking about it, then later on in the morning I add a mineral tinted SPF and apply my makeup. Great video! Thank you. I finally found the cerave tinted and the Australian gold! Planning on trying them out when I’m finished with my current mineral tinted SPF

The drmatology sunscreen is my holy grail! If it wasn’t so expensive, I would wear it daily. I usually wear it to work when I want to blur my pores a little. My days off I wear Cerave’s tinted or am moisturizer. I love those, too. I am a total junkie and always on the hunt for my favorite. So far, it is drmatology brand.
My dermatologist told me to stop using chemical sunscreen as the ingredients are harmful. She said to only use physical sunscreen. Do you disagree with that advice?
Yes!! Completly agree my go to is the LRP double repair used on the video I LOVEEE IT. I find it soo easy to apply and reapply 👏💕 Great video Thank You!!
I use either a dedicated sunscreen or a lightweight moisturizer with SPF. My preference is matte and lightweight/comfortable. Currently using Heliocare 360 Mineral Tolerance Fluid spf 50 and Elta MD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum spf 41, both 100% mineral tinted sunscreens. Tints are fair to light. I have pale, oily, sensitive skin.
The video is excellent and very informative. Fun fact:in my european country, La Roche Posay can be bought only in pharmacies, (or online), so it cannot be considered a drugstore product. Plus, it is quite costly. Yes, I really like their products, but I did not buy one in a long time, precisely because of the price.
I am 51 and have been using Aveno Daily moisturizer with SPF15 for 25 years. I put it on at night and in the morning. I chose this after using Clinique in my teenage and early 20's because I knew I needed the SPF protection, and I didn't want to spend the money or time with a routine. I'm happy to say that I do not have wrinkles at all. I do have some freckles, but honestly I think that's from sun damage in my teens.
It depends on what you'll be doing. For everyday wear, in situations where you are spending very little time outside, a moisturizer with spf would be fine (or in cooler weather if outdoors and not sweating much). If you are going swimming or hiking or just hanging out outside for long periods of time, a dedicated water-resistant sunscreen is needed, at least in warm/hot weather.
I use Cetaphil SPF 30 oil absorbing moisturizer, I like it my for my combo/oily skin type. I use it every day but unfortunately I can't around the eyes so I use Banana Boat kids SPF 60 tear free sunscreen for around my eyes and the rest of my body. I also don't mind banana boat weightless SPF 50+ sunscreen for my body but can't around my eyes. I find in the winter time using my moisturizer SPF it makes my skin feel softer, good for the summer too cause its lightweight even if my skin is oilier that season.
I rotate moisturizers & sunscreens based on what my skin is wanting, the weather, & what I'm sampling at the time. I recently got back on a combo after ordering an Agency box; the Whipped Cloud Care moisturizer has sunscreen in it (apparently okay to sleep in, I won't) but I also layer their tinted silk screen overtop. I'm pretty dry so I use a ton of Cloud Care, which should offer more than enough protection under the silk screen. I started my niece (14) on a Byoma routine with instructions to use the sunscreen as moisturizer in the morning, but to use a decent amount to acheive full coverage. This kid followed every word I said to a T. Within two weeks of following a routine without any treatments, her skin drastically cleared up. Only young one who listens when I say, "you need sunscreen every day, regardless of temp/outside time because incidental sun exposure is the most common." I can't even get my mom on daily sunscreen and she's already had several melanomas removed. 🤦🏻♀️
I really love your way of breaking information down to be so helpful and understandable. I’m also very appreciative that you provide reasonably priced options for those of us who don’t have unlimited budgets for skin care and makeup. I have a question… there are days I awake and do my a.m. routine and apply Eucerin Daily Protection SPF 30 face lotion/sunscreen. Then later in the day I decide to go out, and I apply Australian Gold Tinted SPF 50 (❤️ this stuff!!) and a little L’Oréal True Match Mineral powder foundation SPF 19 on top of the Eucerin SPF 30 already on my face. (Kind of a quick, light makeup-ish option.) My question is, are the sunscreen benefits from each product layering up to provide extra protection? Is it cumulative? I’m just curious. Most days I just use one sunscreen. Thank you! 😊
I use the Australian tinted sunscreen but I have to prep my skin for it to make sure it does not dry me up. The cerave tinted sunscreen is good as well but it is shiny. Sometimes to change it up I might put my normal moisturizer then I will use a chemical sunscreen 50spf since they don’t leave a white cast after it dries I go with the cetaphil tinted moisturizer with spf 20 To color correct since I have redness due to my rosacea. I don’t like make up so I use that as my foundation to have one healthy tone on my face. Tip: I use the Australian gold sunscreen as my foundation since it had a beautiful Matte finish and then once it is dry I put on a little cerave susncrean for my high cheeks and on my eye lids to give me some highlight effect.
Am very much enjoying your videos, thank you! I am currently loving the Ilia serum you recommended. I bought the Australian Gold and find it drying so I use moisturer. Would I be correct in assuming that if I use the proper amount of sunscreen, adding moisturizer does not compromise the SPF?
I purchased LRP Double Repair with sunscreen. I like the texture, but it doesn’t dry down. If you try to use foundation, it pills horribly. I also found it stings my eyes. I tried their Anthelios with spf 30 mineral sunscreen; it is thick with a really white cast, but doesn’t burn my eyes. Will keep looking for my holy grail!
Great, informative video! I have been using the ELF moisturizer with SPF that you mentioned in the video! I do like combinations because I'm all about convenience and simplicity. For the rest of my body, I do use two separates currently. The sunscreen I use on the rest of my body is the Jaxon Lane Rain or Shine hydrating sunscreen. Absolutely love it. What do you think of that sunscreen?
Thank you for all your advices on different skincare routines and products. I really like your channel. Is it worth talking about BB/CC/DD cream? Thanks.
As an oily skin type, I def prefer a dedicated sunscreen. Usually spf moisturizers don’t last very well and makes me look greasy(cause you have to apply enough to get the full spf also) . Plus most of the time they’re chemical which irritate my skin more.
I do not use chemical and tinted sunscreens because they permanently stain the clothing. I only use mineral sunscreens. In winter there is no sweating issues, so I use those combination products. They are not water resistant and they normally have lower SPF which means it is easy to use and remove them when it is not warm outside. In summer, however, I use standard European fragrance free sunscreens with SPF 50 plus (ie 60 plus) from Avene, Nivea etc. The biggest problem with sunscreens is that companies are not required to disclose the "critical wavelenght" (technical term). In Europe that is only 370 nm (90 % of protection is covered by that value), so that "broad spectrum" term is really marketing term legalized by regulatory bodies. Paula Choice have good combination products with SPF 30 (CALM, DEFENCE and SKIN RECOVERY), eltaMD etc.
Awesome video. This channel is gold! I use moisturizer and a separate sunscreen. I feel more sun protected this way (Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 50 is great for me)
For my face I have found several moisturizers with 25 and 30 SPF, and several 50spf sunscreens that have moisturizing effect. So for daily use i go for only one product. But when i know I'll stay under the sun a lot i use a dedicated water resistant face sunscreen. For me there are a pair of things that are important: the moisturizer or sunscreen must not irritate my eyes, and must not leave a greasy feel.
Thank you for this. I actually already have the Australian Gold. I use it overtop of Cerave ultralight moisturizer SPF 30. And I was finding that the AG was so greasy on my skin, I have combo to oily. But maybe I am applying too much hydration?! I will try the AG alone and see if it's any different.
Just look at Japanese women - besides genetic structure, the fact that the day cream / lotion they wear is already with SPF. Since long time ago, there has always been SPF (15 or 30 ) in Japanese day cream / lotion. Nowadays their day cream / lotion is with SPF50. If you wear their day cream / lotion, I think you only need to add extra sunscreen cream / lotion if you do outdoor activities.
Better to save money by choosing a Korean BB cream, many of which work as a moisturiser sunscreen foundation 3-in-1. They feel nice on the skin like normal day cream (not greasy nor drying), has SPF 50 PA ++++ or above, and provide the coverage of a foundation (mostly medium coverage, not full coverage, enough for daily use though).
I love this video! I hate being told not to use something because some people may not apply it correctly. Give me the science! I'm using three different sunscreens to decide which I like, CeraVe tinted, LRP tinted, Ulta Tinted. So far the CeraVe is winning, the other two are a bit drying, especially the LRP. I also use the Ilia when I want a more makeup feel. I have some moisturizers that have sunscreen, some not, but I still layer on the tinted sunscreen, usually in two applications. I just bought some Lancome makeup but it's only SPF 15, so I still use sunscreen under it.
Tinted moisturizer spf. When I use mineral spf and put it on as directed I need to put so much foundation over it to cover the white cast. Love the Cerave’
I like a stand-alone SPF product as most of the moisturisers are not high enough in SPF here in Australia. So, I use SPF50+ and that is after I moisturise. That is my preference.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I’ve pondered this since being obsessive over skin care the last couple of years. I use combination but believed I was cheating somehow. Turns out I’m not. Loved this video. Huge thanks and hi from over the pond in UK 😘
All of my skin care products have ingredients to moisturize, so I use a dedicated spf...which still has moisturizing ingredients. I use a spf 50, I work indoors. After work I refresh with a spray spf, which is spf 100.
I used to use a sunscreen in a moisturizer, as I age my skin gets more and more sensitive and I can’t find one that is ok and now no spf at all, except at the beach
Hello Dr., first I’d like to thank you for making these awesome and informative videos! Now, I do have a question: As a woman in my late 30’s who is now concerned with wrinkles , would it be better if I apply my regular moisturizer first and layer it with an SPF sunscreen or would a combination product deliver the same anti-wrinkle benefits and therefore be sufficient? I’d like to piggyback this by asking you if there’s a good eye spf moisturizer that you’d like to recommend? I used to use one from Ole Henriksen but they discontinued that product!
Thank you! Lately I’ve been feeling that maybe I should get a moisturizer/sunscreen separately after my combination moisturizing sunscreen. But now I know I’m safe😆
I like Olay Regenerist SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen Moisturizer. I would prefer it be less expensive and a higher SPF but it's the only thing I can use. Chemical SPF breaks me out and plain mineral sunscreen is too drying. I have no problem using enough Olay because my skin is extremely dry. I find it helpful to do single sections of my face at a time because applying the whole amount you need for your whole face at once can lead to uneven distribution.
What is the better option for oily skin? Right now I'm using vit c & stand alone sunscreen and my skin is oily shiny with my makeup on and my foundation also has spf
Hi there! I really love your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your info with us. My question is this. How do you feel about B.Y.O. Tint? Meaning, what about adding a stand-alone tint, like something like Clarins and Loreal has ...and adding it to a tintless sunscreen/moisturizing product like the ones you are featuring here? I like the shades of tint I own so I am wondering if this is a possibility for me to add to a mineral tintless sunscreen (which I prefer over chemical) Thank you!
I love your videos!! I am trying to stay out of the sun more and more, but I love a good tan. I’m trying a new sunless Self Tan by St. Tropez, bronzing water mist, goow boosting vitamin c & d. Can you do a review of sunless self tan formulations? I’d prefer a minimal and more natural product, but I don’t know what is safest for my skin long-term. Thank you!
I usually use an spf moisturizer. It seems to work for me. I only put it on my face and neck. The rest of my body is already tan. I also have a sunscreen I can put on over it if I think I need it.
A moisturizer with spf 30 like you show, is it enough to apply it in the morning? But another rule is to apply suncreen every 2 hours on your face , in winter ? Or is that not nesecary when once applied a moisturizer with spf 30 in the morning ?
Can you describe the chemicals added to the la roche posay double repair spf 30. Im new to your channel and new to adding sunscreen to my face as a daily routine. Im trying to figure out what is the best route for me . Thank you for all your great advice and videos !
This was timely for me as, while shopping yesterday, I noticed a combination face product and wondered whether the combo moisturizer & spf is effective. Good info ... thanks.
Every morning I apply the drmtlgy SPF 46 first before my coffee and then I re apply my drmtlgy SPF 44 if I just stay at home. But if I go out to pick up my child I apply my Australian Gold after my moisturizer.
I use a moisturizer with an spf of 30 or above. I’m currently using Cera Ve AM moisturizer with spf 30. I love how it feels on my skin and I need to use more on my skin (2 finger lengths). I want to try the Australian Gold and tinted Cera Ve product. Your videos are very helpful and look forward to learning more budget friendly dermatology information.👍
I wanted to love the Cera Ve AM because I love the PM, but the AM pills on my skin. I’ve discovered the CVS dupe for the AM has all the best ingredients as the CeraVe AM (ceramides and niacinamide) but doesn’t pill. It also has SPF 30. Generally In the morning I wash my face use an antioxidant serum then apply the CVS CeraVe dupe for the AM. I let it absorb for a little while then apply the Drmtlgy tinted mineral moisturizer SPF 46 to face and neck.
@@paulachristie7807 hey Paula im currently using the dermtlgy SPF 46 and it works well for me... i was just wondering why would ypu pair it with th CVS moisturizer woth spf 30??? Is the drmtlgy spf 46 not enough on its own? Thank you ♡
@MiMiLicious the amount of sunscreen you have to apply to get the SPF on the bottle is a lot. If I used that amount of the Dermtlgy tinted sunscreen I would need two bottles a month, nearly $60. Too much for me. Also if I used it on my neck, chest, and ears I would get that tint on my clothes. I use the CVS sunscreen first, get dressed then apply the tinted sunscreen to my face and try to drag it down my neck a little so there isn't a color line.
I would love to use the LRP Double Moisturizer but I see that it contains Myristyl Myristate and is highly comadogenic, do you recommend for a mature and combination skin? thanks for your answer.
I use 3 pumps on my face. Then 2 pumps for each side of my neck. Unfortunately, the only thing I can use on my eyelid is Clinique Sun (expensive). Currently on Aveeno Radiance moisturizer (soy for brown spots), then Olay Complete (chem & mineral) both in SPF 30. Yes, 2 layers. 🤣
Does it sting or water your eyes? Strong smell? Can you like taste it in your mouth? I feel like most chemical sunscreens i can only use on the center of my cheeks and forehead
@@playingtime24 it doesn’t sting at all and since I purchased this product a couple weeks ago and I’ve worn it every day on my morning walks and it works great for me. It has a very light fragrance that fir me is hardly noticeable.
@@playingtime24 Not at all for me - I walk every morning in hot humid FL and I swear a lot and this moisturizer does not sting. I love how moisturizing it is and that’s all I use in the morning besides a vitamin c product.
Cerave Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 is what I use. I like LRP Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 100 too. They both have chemical filters. I have a deeper skin tone so mineral and combo sunscreens just don’t work for me.
Instead of using 2 layers of Australian Gold (very drying), can I use one layer of a combination product or a moisturizing sunscreen and one layer of Australian Gold?
Hey Doc, since combination spf is usually a chemical sunscreen, do we apply on dry skin like we do usually with sunscreen or on damp skin like we do for a moisturizer?
I bought a Neutrogena ultra sheer SPF 55 that works really well, but it has behenyl alcohol. If I apply it over my moisturizer will it still dry out my skin?
I really question about australia gold SPF50, coz the zinc % is really low, how can they reach SPF50 and 80min water resistance. I know we cannot simply rely on zinc%, but come on, this % is just too low to be trusted. I prefer all goods sport sunscreen SPF30 and Blue lizard Sensitive SPF30 and also the Paula's Choice SPF30 defense sunscreen. All three are my go-to sunscreen with great ingredient, enough zinc% mineral sunscreen with no whitecast and no breakout risk.

I think dermatologists say SPF 30 is just fine and there is very little benefit to SPF 50. Especially so for darker skin.
Because you won t need another moisterizer for at night or ro put on days if you are at home. So a separate spf and moisterizer is way better.

I use the DRMTLGY one every day! I love it!
Maybe you can use IT cosmetics colour corrector + SPF 50 physical sunsreen. I use it and love it, blend nicely with my skintone. I'm asian BTW.
@@wiwinwidaningsih9351 ive heard good things about that brand. I’ll give it a try!
I feel more sun protected this way (Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 50 is great for me)
Fun fact: You can't find Australian Gold Sunscreen in Australia anywhere 🤷🏼♀️
I live in Australia too and have never seen it but was told this is an American company
Wow your hair looks so nice and shinny. Any hair tips?
Clinique has a 50 spf moisturizer that’s tinted & it’s mineral! Love it
I have that one
Thanks for saying the correct amount to use! Very helpful!
I like a stand-alone SPF product as most of the moisturisers are not high enough in SPF here in Australia. So, I use SPF50+ and that is after I moisturise. That is my preference.
Great, unbiased educational video. I love the elf holy hydration spf 30 and had wondered if using for birth was ok. Now I know
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I’ve pondered this since being obsessive over skin care the last couple of years. I use combination but believed I was cheating somehow. Turns out I’m not. Loved this video. Huge thanks and hi from over the pond in UK 😘
I tend to just use sunscreen by its self in the mornings but I think im going to start using an spf moisturizer and sunscreen!
Pipette SPF 50 is very very moisturizing - squalene is the 3rd ingredient.
i used a spf moisturiser when i cut the lawn. My eyes were burning because of the chemical ingredients lol. just gonna use zinc in future
All of my skin care products have ingredients to moisturize, so I use a dedicated spf...which still has moisturizing ingredients. I use a spf 50, I work indoors. After work I refresh with a spray spf, which is spf 100.
Which moisturizer sunscreen spf 50,sunscreen spray spf 100
I will try the Cerave tinted SPF 30, thanks.
Please do a haircare video 😍🤩
Such an informative video! Can't thank you enough!❤
Is there a concern applying a moisturizer with spf on damp skin?
Do you like Kiehl’s moisturizer sunscreen? SPF 30!
I love your videos thank you so much for your affordable sunscreen sugguestions!
What is the better option for oily skin? Right now I'm using vit c & stand alone sunscreen and my skin is oily shiny with my makeup on and my foundation also has spf
I personally use a serum that has spf 30, a moisturizer and an actual sunscreen. 🙏🏻
What serum?
Thank you!
Do the tinted sunscreens she posted protect against blue light?
Good info ... thanks.
Thank you for your advice. One question: what can I do to minimize the appearance of body creepy skin?
Great video. Very helpful. Thanks doc!
Stand alone the Australian gold every day my go to
I use the 2 and 1 sunscreen with moisturizer since my foundation also comes with SPF.
@@paulachristie7807 thank you so much for upur response and for the great advice♡ much love
Please cover rosewater and which toners for sensitive skin, dry skin, and aging.
I’m loving the ELF Holy Hydration spf 30 - it feels so moisturizing on my face and spreads easily! I think this is my favorite new purchase this year.
I swear sometimes but meant sweat a lot - LOL
@@nancycook7802 thank you!!
Thank you DOC. What do you recommend for puffy eyes?
Cerave Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 is what I use. I like LRP Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 100 too. They both have chemical filters. I have a deeper skin tone so mineral and combo sunscreens just don’t work for me.
Instead of using 2 layers of Australian Gold (very drying), can I use one layer of a combination product or a moisturizing sunscreen and one layer of Australian Gold?
Yes! Dr. Dray says that’s ok! 👍
Just bought the DRMTLGY using ur link. Let u know the outcome.
Can I add a facial oil after my moisturizer/spf? Would it degrade? Would it be OK to mix in a few drops of oil before applying it?
I prefer European (Rieman P20, Bioderma, European LRP Shaka Fluide) sunscreen when outside and Korean ones (Hygee vegan) on mostly indoor time
A wide brimmed hat and a collared shirt is the best sun protection.
Hey Doc, since combination spf is usually a chemical sunscreen, do we apply on dry skin like we do usually with sunscreen or on damp skin like we do for a moisturizer?
Great video Dr
Unless im going to the beach or pool. Combination products are my go to.
tinted combination product! and i'm already looking for those you recomend! (harder to find in Portugal...)
So if you use a moisturizer with SPF followed by an SPF alone, is it .25 teaspoons each?
The Australian Gold stains all my clothes and makes me look orange with the medium/tan and like I have blackface on with the dark/rich tone :(
I mix it with a hydrating mineral sunscreen, and one pump of bb cream with spf 44. The finish is PERFECT.
@@ambergerhelper7852 I thought mixing sunscreens was a big no-no?
@@sophhnavarro Since they contain about the same SPF, and they settle down nicely, I don’t see a problem. But yes, I’ve heard that.
Can you show in your vlogs facial routine morning and night facial routine
I bought a Neutrogena ultra sheer SPF 55 that works really well, but it has behenyl alcohol. If I apply it over my moisturizer will it still dry out my skin?
What about people with oily acne prone skin, the one from panoxyl and differin are ok? Panoxyl is phisycal
and differin is chemical both spf 30 🤔
Can I use a a moisturizer with spf in the morning and just a spf throughout the Rest of the day?
I really question about australia gold SPF50, coz the zinc % is really low, how can they reach SPF50 and 80min water resistance. I know we cannot simply rely on zinc%, but come on, this % is just too low to be trusted. I prefer all goods sport sunscreen SPF30 and Blue lizard Sensitive SPF30 and also the Paula's Choice SPF30 defense sunscreen. All three are my go-to sunscreen with great ingredient, enough zinc% mineral sunscreen with no whitecast and no breakout risk.
