Try Torneko again. Made by the same company of the roguelike shiren the wandered franchise by chunsoft. I think that this game is easier than the shiren franchise by a bit. I mean it was not the RPG title you where maybe looking for at the time but at least it was a good representation of the Rogue: dungeons of doom done in a Japanese style of gameplay. Kinda like chess where you get better at the game with more practice at knowing how to counter certain enemies or when to use differnt items in your inventory effectively. Did this title come with a tutorial puzzle section to help grapple the different items? I know it's kinda a time sink to get a good grasp on these kinda titles. Working through my DS copy and the moment I was able to get a companion on the journey I was able to progress further down the line.

I think 8-Eyes is the most misunderstood game on the NES. The main issue is that everyone expected it to play like Castlevania but it's quite different. You need to understand when to use the sword vs eagle vs special weapons. The game really shines on 2 player mode when the second player understands how to effectively use the eagle.

The only time I had a disappointing Christmas video game story was in 1993. My dad asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I told him I wanted a couple more games for my Genesis because even though it came with Sonic 1 I only had maybe 1 or 2 other games that I don't remember at the time and most of the time my parents took me for video rentals. When I woke up at 2am or 3am my mom let me start opening my gifts. As I start peeling back the paper I see Superman. I couldn't understand why he picked that out of all games when I've never been a big Superman fan but I didn't want to hurt my dad's feelings so I pretended to be happy and gave him a big hug. My assumptions were right too because when I popped the game in I thought it was so awful. Even though I played it more since I had nothing else in my collection I kinda liked the game a little bit at certain parts but the game overall just has the bland graphics, lackluster Superman abilities, and both enemies and bosses are such hit sponges that make the game drag on way too long and it's so unforgiving with the continues. The next go round on my birthday in 1994 he shocked me when he bought me Streets Of Rage 3 but little did I know those two moments of Christmas in 1993 and my birthday in 1994 would be the last time I saw him as he passed away in November of 1994. I love you dad and I miss you the same 29 years later.

I came from a poor family with poor relatives. Getting videogames for birthday or Christmas was just NOT a thing. So I can't really relate to this much. It wasn't until I was well into my adult years that my friends were able to gift me videogames, and I still treasure them. Don't think I've gotten a bad game for the holidays yet, but at this point I also know how to do my research.
If you grew up getting games for the holidays, consider yourself lucky. Some of use sadly didn't get to experience that.

Its cool that you have so much footage of this stuff from when you were a kid! I'll say this, I have a few of terrible memories from a few specific incidents when I was a kid, not so perfect childhood BUT, my dad always made up for it by buying games for me and my brother. Which I realize sounds kind of messed up, but noone ever went to the hospital, broke a bone or was bleeding to death, so it's not quite as bad as it sounds but, there was 'some' abuse.
The craziest one was when I was 15 and my dad was like, drunk or something, IDK, he never got drunk drunk but he had to have a few beers in him, and for almost no reason went OFF, and pushed over/broke my tv and my tv stand. Again this kind of stuff didn't happen often at all but, maybe once a year there was something like this. So, I was 15 and was bigger and could fight back, what did I do? I took the leg of the tv stand and hit him with it on the arm and cussed him out, and then he went and stayed the night at a hotel. Apparently I scared the shit out of him but my mom was already pissed and making him leave that night. This literally only ever happened twice where he had to leave like that in all the years living there.
but, the very next day he took all the blame for it, and offered to take just me to Best Buy to buy me a new tv and stand. And not only did he do that, he bought me a FREAKING XBOX,,, mind you this was mid 2002, I had just got a Gamecube for christmas when it was brand new, Xbox was like 7 months old, I had got a PS2 my birthday the year before as well, I still had every other console in existance from earlier than that, and he was like oh hey you don't have that do you? Yeah, shit. Since you already had a tv and night stand, Im not really buying you anything you didn't have, so you can have the Xbox and 2 games. And that was 1 of the last times anything like that happened, some minor stuff later but, damn. He musta had some kinda life affirming shit that night at the hotel. He was never a bad guy, still isn't, his dad was violenter than me but, it was just wild how spoiled we were, whenever he did make a big mistake he made up for it with video games lol.

Funny story about Ghostbusters- around the summer of 2003 when I was 7 my mom bought a sega master system with about eight or so games from a yard sale. One of the games was Ghostbusters, and I remember the first thing she said about it as she saw me spending all that money at the start all willy nilly was "you're terrible with money" (referring to me). Now, I'm the one helping her with bills and whatnot.

I first had it on C64 on cassette (my God talk about horrendous loading times from those cassettes) then I saw it for the NES hoping the game would be better. There was no loading to play the game on the NES but other than that it was the exact same game that I had on my C64.

I have before received bad games as presents, but usually I thought they were good games at the time! Christmas 96 I asked for, and got, Mortal Kombat 2 for the Saturn, I thought it was good at first, it had the arcade intro and all, but the music didn’t sound as good as the Mega Drive version and you couldn’t do fatalities! What?!? I would’ve asked for Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 instead but I didn’t like the redesign Katana, my character of choice, got in that one! I was NOT the brightest person at the time! Had I known better, I would’ve asked for UMK3 instead and played that as Sonya Blade, as she was my character of choice in MK1! My game of choice for my birthday the following year was a bit more debatable: Sonic R for the Saturn. It’s a decent game but it has so little in the way of content! I guess I mainly wanted it because it’s Sonic and there was little else coming out for the Saturn by that point, the latter point also being why Croc was the game I spent my Christmas money on that year! My birthday the year after I got Space Jam for the PlayStation, mainly because I had given away my Saturn upon getting a PlayStation that spring, Space Jam being a game I had for the Saturn, and it went nicely with the multi tap I asked for as my main present (because the DualShock Mom got me for Gran Turismo added to the 2 1080 pads that came with the system)! Space Jam got slaughtered by the gaming press, but for the most part, I think they did what they could with the license, I certainly think it’s good for a game hated by the gaming press and there wasn’t much in the way of kids games for the PlayStation until after the release of A Bug’s Life! How did I become a mainly retro gamer? Until this point, I always gave away my previous console upon getting a new one. When I got a Saturn, I gave away my Mega Drive. Upon getting a PlayStation, I gave away my Saturn. However: in April 99, I rented Asteroids for my PlayStation, played it up to level 25, saved, but when I went back to it later that day, I found myself back on level 1! I was SO furious, that I turned my back on PlayStation altogether and, instead of wanting to switch to Nintendo 64 (I had a big dislike for Nintendo at the time!), I decided I wanted my Mega Drive back! (Don’t forget you’re hearing from a Sega fanboy here, who only switched from Saturn to PlayStation because of how bad a 1998 Sega’s 32 bit machine was having!)
I got my Mega Drive back from the friend I gave it to and, since then I’ve kept every console I ever added to my collection!
Although not a game, I can also tell you that the worst Christmas present I EVER got, whether I asked for it or not, was Toy Story 4 on 4K Blu Ray! I don’t know why I asked for it, even though I was horrified to see Woody leave Buzz and co even when watching it at the cinema! Had I not been with someone when watching it at the cinema, I would’ve walked out at that point in the movie! I guess I asked for it on 4K Blu Ray that Christmas because I still KINDA liked it? And/or maybe I wanted to keep my Pixar collection complete? Either way, when I unwrapped it on Christmas morning 2019, I instantly consigned it to the chopping block but didn’t get round to getting rid of it until shortly after the summer of 2021! Maybe I still wanted to ask myself whether I actually did want it or not? Also, December 2019 was a HORRIBLE time for me overall because of some upsetting news I read that actually made me want to kill myself! (I actually attempted suicide, but my parents stopped me!)
How did I evict TS4 from my 4K Blu Ray collection? I donated it to one of my local charity shops! The same one where I bought The Simpsons Game for my PSP!

While I never got a lot of video games during the holidays, I will say I never got any stinkers. I guess a case could be made for those who do not like FRIDAY THE 13th and METROID on NES, as well as MAXIMUM CARNAGE on SNES but I don't feel they are terrible games compared to some of these. While my mom could barely say she knew anything about me as a kid, when it came to knowing what games I would like she did have a talent for picking out great ones. And of course Santa nor Krampus ever let me down ;). Most of these I would agree are stinkers but compared to so many of the greats you scored in your life I think we all would forgive those lol. Thanks for sharing as always Tyler and have a Happy Holiday!
