I hope it's the idea of a review that caused your cereal to die in vain, because I'm not sure the game's the most exciting one haha! Baby steps though, need to get warmed up again before I get back into some heavy hitters! Thanks for the support as always E C!
Cheers for watching dude, and the kind words on Twitter. Didn't want to get into it there, but that last tweet was something I needed to hear. I'm going to cover a Japanese game next, then it's time to finally get into Super Jetpak DX!
What a pleasant surprise to see a new video from you! Nice job as always. I don’t think I’ve ever played this one, but I enjoy the first one even though I am absolutely trash at it.
Haha then I warn you Kyle - this one starts at the difficulty the last one ends on... If you have R-Type DX, you can play it there - both versions of the game are present, but that's a story for another time! Hope you're doing ok!
@@GameBoyle I have a European version of R-Type, I am not sure which country it came from. I don't even know if I have ever seen R-Type 2 as a stand-alone cart before. But I will keep my eye out for it.
Great video, I love shoot em ups but for some reason I've always struggled to get into R-Type, there's something about the slow pace and the shield mechanic that annoys me! Maybe I should give it another go and take my time a bit more..
It's actually the shield that I love about the game, it adds a level of versatility because you can just chuck it at a bigger ship which'll damage them, then you can focus on hiding behind it rather than dodging the million bullets that get sent your way. I think it's going to be hard to play Gradius again after this because that game just feels brutal in my head in comparison! Anyways, cheers for watching man :) Glad you enjoyed it and I hope it convinces you to check out R-Type again!
@@GameBoyle Yeah going to give it a play after work I think! I've always thought of the shield as a nuisance that gets in the way of the shooting! Maybe I'll learn to appreciate it this time! :) Keep up the great work
After this comment I dropped a long play buddy - give it a look and see how I use the shield. It doesn’t mean I died a million times learning where the enemies were going to come from, but you can use it to get through 90% of the enemies if you have it on the right side of the ship for each section imo!
The only shooter i own is Solar Striker but that's only because I find these Shoot'em'ups quite intimidating... Thank you Matt for your compelling review and background on it's development. I will add R Type 1 & 2 to my list! Have a great week amigo!!
See if you can get a copy of R-Type DX buddy - it’s a little easier to come by and you can still play both games in b&w. There are a couple of issues with that version, but I’ll get into them in a few weeks! Don’t be intimidated! Often it’s just pattern memorization :) if you’ve got patience, you can play shmups! Anyways, cheers for watching as always dude! The new vid will either be up today or tomorrow!
I love how in depth you went on this one. So 1&2 don’t share their engine but somehow they mixed both in DX? Also mad props of finishing this game, both are bloody hard imho 😆
Yup, that's why DX isn't really mentioned in either review, that bad boy needs it's own video because the story is wild! Thanks - I think I can mange with most Shmups on the system these days... It's hard platformers that do me in haha! Thanks for the support as always!
@@GameBoyle Love this channel. I've probably watched at least 50 of your videos so far. You're research/knowledge is incredible. And the videos don't go too long which I appreciate. I'm looking forward to the R-Type DX video. Also 007 for original game boy. Thanks for the great content!
I don't remember ever seeing R Type 2 on the game boy. Great review mate. It's funny seeing it was programmed in Wales. You just always assume they're developed exclusively in Japan. Especially the shooters.
Honestly Rob, it's a cart I've had for years but it seems pretty obscure... I think I've seen it once maybe in the wild. If you're interested, I'd say now might be the time to snatch it up. I'm a bit reluctant to say that in video's these days - it tends to inflate prices >.
@@GameBoyle I did look it up on ebay and loose carts are pretty pricey. Complete is pretty expensive too but not as much as I was expecting. I do want to add some more games to the collection. Personally I've been waiting for things to get back to normal so I can go to the gaming markets again. Loads of gb carts there. I love going through them.
@@Champion2D I know that feeling man, honestly I've kinda fallen into collecting Master System because locally there's just no stores that have a good Game Boy section and I've not been able to go back to the UK and rummage through the stores there.
That's just footage from (I think) the original arcade version or possibly the Amiga port. The demo that was mentioned was lost to time, so no footage of that available.
@@Gameboygenius Thanks for clarifying that! Yes Jess, I'm afraid it's just arcade footage - that said, it does look pretty nice on the GBC - you'll just have to wait for the R-Type DX episode to see it! Thanks for watching both!
I have a ton kicking around and hopefully I'll get to cover one or two of them in the next few weeks - If you check my Twitter, I posted about a few the other day that I liked. Super Jetpak DX and Dragoneborne left me with really good first impressions, and I've heard great things about the games from Green Man Games (they have a few) and Quest Arrest. The games from Habit Soft in Japan are also great, they just won't ship outside of Japan!
@@GameBoyle I have a few, Pine Creek being one, I also got to play the demo of a fan made MORTAL KOMBAT game, it's one of the best games I've seen the system pull off, here's a link: th-cam.com/video/vnpFxrdOE-A/w-d-xo.html
To be fair to them, it’s pretty common in GB ports to drop levels, but here I think it was the right call because it would have ended up feeling pretty static compared to the one in the original game! Thanks for watching as always dude - hope you’re keeping well!
I am so happy I found this channel back. Time to binge watch all the content I missed from this heavily underrated channel
Thanks for the kind words and for watching :) Enjoy the binge and sorry about the video quality from a few years back in advance!
Next week!!!??? Just dropped by bowl of cereal in excitement! Can't wait!! Great review Mat 👍

Great to see you back! And I cheered at the "made in Wales" reveal! :D
Haha I know! I nearly choked on my tea when I saw it! Cheers dude :) Thanks for watching!
Great review as always. And amazing work by Bob Pape for cramming this mammoth game into the tiny 8bit GameBoy.
Keep up the great work.

Hey, I didn’t even know R-Type II was ported to Game Boy! Very interesting background information on the game.
Cheers Björn, it's odd given the love for the first game this one's so overlooked! Thanks for watching and the support as always!

Wait, the demo shown earlier in the video intrigues me. What system is running that? Because if that was a Game Boy Color game, color me impressed.
