Man, that two version thing is a fascinating piece of gaming history. So many cosmetic and gameplay differences! I cant believe no one's ever mentioned it before. Also really glad I held out on getting this one. Now I know which version to get!
Thanks! I'm glad I didn't review it until now for that very reason - it was originally going to be part of a halloween month a few years ago but I just didn't enjoy it. Did you end up picking it up?
Really liked the intro to this one mate. Its crazy just how many Godzilla movies there are. IT looks like a pretty decent game and shame that the PAL version has the slow version (as always!) Another well written and informative review! ;)
I've always heard bad reviews on the Godzilla GB game, but learning about it's Chibi reference was interesting for sure. I'm interested in checking out Gojirakun now!! Hilarious wearing a jean jacket! I love Japanese pop culture! Thanks Matt for the great review!
Thanks Matt! This is so great! I've always *wanted* to love this game but could never figure out why it just didn't work... Now I need to track down the OG version to try :-)
Very informative episode about Godzilla on GB. Didn't think it was a bad game. I never knew about the cartoon/educational show. That explains a lot. But a speedier version of the game and with different power-ups...I MUST have it. lol. Looking forward to your *psst, coming next week* video. I DO have that game, I'd like to see/hear your thoughts on it. :)
@@GameBoyle I haven't ordered much from Japan lately. I'll have to check J4U. They're able to ship to USA again, only more expensive. I did end up picking up Pokonyan recently. Tough one to get.
Ooh, I knew that the Japanese version of this game was different, but not that different! Had a play of the American version and ran into the same qualms that you had with it, so I'm definitely going to have to give Gojira-Kun a spin one of these days. While the later Japanese version certainly benefits from the gameplay improvements and cleaner art style, what draws me to the western version are those stunning character portraits in the opening demo- they capture the monsters' frightening likenesses really well!
I think those monster portraits are the highlight of the Western version tbh, I just can't get over how great that Chibi Godzilla is on the title screen of the Japanese movie!
While I kind of understand changing the box art and such for the western market, which was pretty standard in the 80s and 90s, I really have no idea why the localization team would want to make the game objectively worse. There were some weird choices made back in the day
The only thing I can think of is editing the sprite broke something in the code, but I've got nothing to back that up! Either way, thanks for watching!
I can see the logic of slowing down the gameplay; ponderous movements were used to sell Godzilla's (and giants in general) immensity in the films. It is misguided as it doesn't work with itsy bitsy sprites, in addition to being just annoying to control. You also missed that in the exported version Rodan homes in on Godzilla. I guess that's supposed to be more hardcore, too. Either case, neither are a patch on Flappy, which is available on the same system. (PS, Godzilla is a knock-off of the Rhedosaurus! Yeah, I said it!)
Oh I didn't even notice the difference with Rodan - but now I think about it, some of the Japanese levels would've been impossible if that was the case! Thanks for pointing that out and for watching!
AVGN "reviewed" this game and obviously panned it. He reviewed it based solely on Godzilla being all cute. If you get past the bait-and-switch cover art and title screen, it's actually not a bad puzzle platformer. Don't expect too much.

OMG I remember this Godzilla GB game! I had it has a kid but I found it so hard!
Haha I felt the same way when I went to review it dude - with a little practice, you get used to the difficulty! Thanks for watching buddy!
Always look forward to these videos
Cheers Jason!

Haha slow PAL shouldn't come into play here though, it's deliberate which is super odd! Thanks for watching sir!
Never knew about the japanese version. Super interesting to see regional differences like these!
Glad you enjoyed Wakko!
Nice! Have been growing curious about Godzilla movies and games lately. Thanks for the great review!
Fair warning dude, most Godzilla games aren't great! The movies though are definitely worth watching!

What an incredibly helpful review! Thanks! :)
Thanks for the video Matt
No problem Noah, thanks for watching!
You can't just casually drop a clip from Monster Squad without me pointing out that Wolfman has nards.
Hahahaha! I couldn't fit it into the review! I tried! Thanks for saving me ;)
Fun to know! Always thought Godzilla looked like a dull Crazy Castle game, but atomic breath sounds like a great improvement!
Haha to be fair, it's better than Crazy Castle Björn, just not by much! Thanks for watching :)
Thanks Matt! This is so great! I've always *wanted* to love this game but could never figure out why it just didn't work... Now I need to track down the OG version to try :-)
Did you end up getting a Japanese copy Andrew? If so, what did ya think? Thanks for watching as always sir!
Just ordered the Gojira-kun version!!! ARIGATOU Matt for the great recommendation!!
haha Dōitashimashite / you're welcome Andres! Did it arrive yet?
@@GameBoyle still waiting for my parcel via Sea of Japan... I ordered this and Parodius. :)

Did you end up picking it up Vinnie? It's definitely the best way to play the game, but it's not a 'must have' imo!

cool review
Poor godzilla, great stuff as per Mat!
Cheers Tooty!
I definitely prefer the cute chibi art style. Shame that the American version has so many faults, but it happens! Looking forward to the next one!
Chibi FTW! Thanks for watching sir!

This is not at all what I expected a Godzilla game t o be like.
That's the wonder of the Game Boy man, it's full of surprises ;)
It's a pity the occidental version loses the charm of the original to adapt the game to a different Godzilla. Thanks for the video!
No problem Dennis, as I've said a couple of times to you today, thanks for watching haha!

I had this game, ah it was mediocre fun. Better than doing homework for sure. You should give Gargoyle's Quest a try.
I've already review it way back! I need to get around to the second one though, that game's ace! Thanks for watching sir!

Nice
Thanks! Hope ya enjoyed!
Looks like tail gator.
Ahh to be fair, Tail Gator is MUCH better! Thanks for watching :)
