Thanks Pablo, glad to be back! This is actually the second video I uploaded since the unofficial hiatus, so give the Othello review a look if you've got the time :) Thanks again for the kind words and for watching!
One thing not mentioned yet in the video or comments. The bottle playspace is 16 units tall in the NES version and only 15 units tall in the Game Boy version. This might be one reason it's even tougher on the Game Boy. Pardoned.
And I promise, it will continue into a THIRD week :o! Let's see if I can keep up this pace, but I'm going to aim for at least two a month going forward!
Wow! It’s ben a while! How are you? 🙋🏽♂️ Great to have you back!! 🙇🏽♂️ I was wondering, do you have the analogue pocket to play your gameboy games with? And, when will the james bond review be up? 🤗
Haha I cannot escape my Bond obligations - I promise I will do it before the years out (scouts honour)! I'm good thanks - in a much better place, hence the reviews popping up again! I hope you're doing good too? I actually don't have one yet - I preorder it, but I wasn't lucky enough to get one before the Q4 slot. I can't wait until I finally have it though, as it's going to make my life sooo much easier!
Woohoo!! Dr Mario!!! I can definitely see the difficulty in this version with the very busy grayscale colors. It is almost a completely different experience relative to its color versions. Great Review!!!
I feel like this version could be pardoned for not having color much quicker if the virus animation was significantly more subtle Looking forward to the next review!
Inspired by your review, I just cleared this one on Level 20 on all difficulties (including Hi speed). While it was quite challenging, I didn't have any problem identifying colors quickly. If anything I had a bigger problem with my Game Boy Advance pivoting back and forth as I worked the controls (and yes, playing on a GBA helps with the colors but not that much) and getting glare on the screen. But you can be pardoned for thinking that it's harder -- many people agree with you -- it just wasn't an issue for me. (P.S. Review Shisenshou: Match-Mania sometime! I think it'll be your kind of game.)
Oh good effort! I did actually beat level 20 playing it on a DMG where the contrast is a little less harsh, but I have to admit I didn't find it all that fun to do so haha... And you'r right - I do like Match-Mania a lot, I just find it a little repetitive haha... I will add it to the list! Thanks for the recommendation and for watching!
@@GameBoyle Heh, I suppose it is repetitive, but so are Sokoban, Lode Runner, et al., right? It was the perfect game to play in fits and starts when I was on assignment in a remote location for work. I'd play a few levels in between things (or, as the game got harder, one level at a time), and gradually made it through all 50 puzzles. The last few are quite tough! It's also much better than the PlayStation shovelware Shisenshou title, or the NES game (Tiles of Fate) which is just a mess.
@@GameBoyle P.S. And thanks for the terrific Game Boy content! Fingers crossed that you make it through all 1000 monochrome games, but in any event, every one you do review is a joy to watch. If you ever hit a wall with motivation, try the translated version of Cave Noire -- it's so much fun and so low-commitment.
@@brokenproteus Both Load Runner and Cave Noire are both high my 'to do' list to be honest! It's kinda nice coming back to doing reviews after so long, it feels like rediscovering my collection which has been ace :) And Thanks - the intention is to do them all, but let's see how long that takes haha... Even at 1 a week, it'd be a couple of years - but there's also GBC games I want to cover etc...
Pardoned! Us reviewers know how it can be when it comes to capturing a specific thing. And I can totally understand your frustration with the gray scale viruses. It looks coherent, but knowing there is a better version out there, makes it seem not so worth it! Great review man!
Thank you for the pardon haha! I just could not get the right line up of viruses to do it, I tried for like 2 hours and thought 'life's to short' haha! Cheers as always for the kind words and for watching buddy!
You have been pardoned for your mistake. I hope you review Kirby’s Pinball Land! It’s one of if not my favorite Game Boy game, and I didn’t even care about pinball before I started playing it a few months ago!

Haha I feel that way about the Warioland games - didn't realise there was a 2 and 3 until I saw 4 on a shelf next to the GBA, and now I have them all whahah! Thanks for watching Randy!

Battle Crusher is excellent! I've not really wandered into doing fighters on the channel (I'm just not as informed as I should be on them as arcade games / home console versions to give a valid opinion), but once I get started, it will be one of the first I cover!
Great video, and fair review. I’m honestly surprised that you didn’t enjoy it. I think it looks great on a modded DMG game boy playing on an IPS screen
I bought this game at the same time as my original Gameboy. Maybe it's nostalgia or a greater familiarity with the GB version, but I prefer Gameboy Dr. Mario over NES Dr. Mario.
It might well be nostalgia, but to be fair I've found myself playing it on the DMG since I posted the review and I do put some of my negative feelings towards it down to the capture set up - I still find the NES one a lot easier to play on the later levels / at higher speeds, but I think if I did play it long enough, I'd get used to seeing potential matches in greyscale just as quickly as in full colour! Thanks for watching Keith!
I hear from the comments there's a great ROM hack called Dr. Mario DX that might be worth a look if you're going to eventually give this version a try!
I got a new Mac that doesn't crash every 10 minutes ;) I'll do a 'state of the union' soon I promise to talk about the hiatus etc. Until then, enjoy the second wind and thanks for watching!
I ignored this version for a long time as well for the reasons you stated. However it got a brilliant romhack translating it into a proper game boy color game. Highly recommend that romhack, which brings it more in line with the NES version. It's called Dr. Mario DX.
I've seen a couple of people recommend it in the comments so I'm definitely going to check it out. I was hoping that it would be optimised for the Super Gameboy as is, but watching the Game Boy World review after I posted mine, I can see that it isn't! Thanks for the recommendation and for watching!
Ah i had a feeling the colour issue would cause an issue, i must admit even watching the footage had my eyes straining, great review though Mat and your pardoned for your crap skills
May I be pardoned for coming late to the party? Always found Dr Mario enjoyable enough on the Game Boy and give it a play now and then but it's not something I've ever felt the need to put serious time into. The problem with Tetris is, that it's just so good, you don't really need any other falling block puzzle game. Which has the better music though?
Oh that's a good question... I still find myself humming the music from Dr. Mario for weeks after playing this, but you even saying the word 'Tetris' has put the main theme in my head haha! You are pardoned ofc ;) Thanks for watching Scotty!
I hope I'll be pardoned for forgetting to comment on your pervious video, but good to see new videos Mat. Being mild ly colour-blind, I've never had too much fondness for colour-based puzzle games (the purples in Puyo Puyo generally throw me for a loop if I'm not concentrating on their expressions). I did grab the 3DS and Wii U versions of the game, though I haven't put much time into either as yet. Animal Crossing, Breath of the Wild and Subnautica got me through a lot of 2020.
Haha it's all good - thanks for taking the time to watch them both! That's a totally fair point to raise and something I'll think about when I eventually get around to reviewing the two Puyo Puyo games on the system. What kind of colour blindness are you effected by if you don't mind me asking? It was Animal Crossing, Hades and watching One Piece for me!
@@GameBoyle In my case, Deuteranomaly, it causes greens to look less vivid than normal. It's the most common kind, and the least problematical in daily life. I do own 3 versions of this game, NES, GB, and SNES. But if you find Dr Mario hard to play on GB, I heartily do not recommend Puyo Puyo 1, which relies on shapes, while it's sequels rely on shades, or colors on the latter 2 (Sun and Yon), and are far easier to play. Puyo Puyo 1 could cause you to go blind on the GB.
I've tried to review Puyo Puyo 1 for ages, but you're right, it's neigh on unplayable haha! One day I think I'd do a longer video covering the two DMG titles, but for now that box is staying on the shelf...

Mat you are Pardoned! I lol'd
Thanks for the pardon - I'm glad it got a laugh at least haha!
I never could get into Dr. Mario, or even really Tetris (Battle Gaiden was cool though). I was always a Kirby Star Stacker kid. I hope I can be pardoned for having such sacrilegious opinions.
You'd be surprised at how many times that game has been mentioned in the comments, and it's one of my favourites, so you're in good company! REVERSE PARDON!
For the algorithm. ✊
