I need tips on going lighter. I have very dark brown hair with a natural red tint to it. I'm trying to go violet. Someone told me I have to bleach first is that true? I'd rather not bleach my hair but I want the color to show up
The stylist that are complaing about her giving information ...really? Like we can read books from Amazon if we wanted. It's like being a chef and being mad there's a cooking channel. Get a life. And some of us literally just do depositing colors and no lift and just learned something about saturation. So thank you Morgan!
Laina Bloncourt thank you Laina! Probably the hormones (8 months pregnant) but I actually just teared up haha I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know that I helped you with something!!
Also some people (like me) cant afford a full on professional salon fee so I’m either doing it myself, or not at all. I’m not a lost client. I was never gonna go to the hairdressers.
Laina Bloncourt yeah I definitely agree! She is just trying to help the ones who probably never go to the salon because honestly I can’t afford it. Plus I’ve known about this for years. I’ve had friends that are hairdressers and would rather tell me than not and mess up my hair. I still go to the salon to get my hair cut , styled etc & tip really well. I appreciate stylist , but not ones being mean over some tips , that you can find here on YT & I’ve even had Sally’s employees help me before bc they see what ppl buy including hairdressers who dye family members hair at home. Tho I know not to use box dye , I have for years and got many compliments. I’m getting older now & the grays are coming in strong, so I really appreciate her video especially right now during these hard times. She’s not even a hairdresser any longer if I herd her right and I appreciate her! I only dye my hair a few times a year so I already have box dye , but will now be going to Sally’s for now on. Thanks 😊
Makeup wipes or micellar water removes hair dye!! From your skin and even your counters! Best thing I’ve ever figured out while coloring my hair at home
It all falls into the color wheel! Certain colors are mixed to create natural hair color formulas. I’m currently on this chapter in my pursuit of my cosmetology license. 😁
@@vampiradeathrockerbatxq762 I’ll never understand why people think they look good with blue, teal, green, bright red hair. It’s so obvious they colored it and brings into question their sanity. When people dye it a normal color like auburn, blonde, light brown, that’s more believable. It’s just gotten outta hand
@@larryc1964 😂😂😂 then dont dye YOUR hair those colors. I love dyed hair I actually just got mine dyed it's natural hair color, this month. I've had my hair all those colors BECAUSE it looks unnatural to our Humanoid hair colors. You dont understand art or poetry. I just started wearing my hair black again after 13 years of bleaching an dying it. I loved my Teal Hair an all the colors I've had Pink, Teal, Red, Blonde, different shades of Purple, Orange, Green, Blue, you name it I've had it. I just stopped dyeing my hair an I'm going to start getting Lace Fronts if I want a different colors now an Emo styled Wigs for when I want Unnatural hair colors now because I'm done damaging my hair I need it all to grow out health so I can start spiking it up in a Mohawks again it'll be so pretty an long. Hey dont get upset some people are just more creative an expressive themselves more 💁🏽♀️💇🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
I've used drugstore kids since middle school and never had issues though....I had a stylist that didn't believe me when I told her my hair wasn't naturally black. I mean I'm not gonna dye it more rhannonce every few months but I've never had an issue.

You can also use coconut oil from your kitchen to put on your skin along your hair line. Don’t plaster the coloured hair flat on head use a tail comb to lift root area so air can get through so it can oxodize. When you are ready to wash it out, never use water to get colour off the skin use a cotton pad apply more leftover colour from your bowl apply to hairline and with cotton pad rub your scalp around the hair line, colour removes colour from your skin, use folded toilet paper to continue removing colour from your stained skin and hairline.
I have been dying my hair for about 6 years and couldn't agree more and I do use both drugstore and professional products I love the way my hair looks with number 7 and 10
I'm a returning cosmetologist. I need to test to reinstate my expired license. It's been a long time. I watch these videos to learn and study. Good information. I know the basics but really need a refresher.
this was a GREAT video. Idk why the internet makes it so hard explaining what causes "hot roots" - I've never died my hair at a salon and looked all over the internet and no one explains it nearly as well as she did in 30 seconds. unbelievable.
I agree with you .I did hair for 16 years I do use a drugstore hair color and also used professional colors I really dont see much of a difference .I'm a level 4 and I use a.medium brown cause drugstore colors do come out darker ....so I think it's ok to go go darker .just my opinion lol great video
Drugstore colors look great, but they have chemicals that cause damage overtime. I would recommend reading up about it because it’s actually crazy interesting
I got light blonde (,neutral, ) at Sally beauty supply and my hair turned really dark gold blonde . However, I never had this problem with drugstore colors.
Simple Rules For Home Color: 1) NEVER try to go more than 3 Levels LIGHTER in ONE Application. 2) ALWAYS buy more product than you think you will need. 3) NEVER attempt to use color to LIGHTEN hair that is already colored. 4) ALWAYS Recondition damaged hair until it is in GOOD condition before attempting Color or Bleach. 5) NEVER use more than 30 Vol. Peroxide or Developer. (Bleach Or Color). 6) ALWAYS use color remover (Not Bleach) to remove old (darker) color or correct a mistake. 7) IF IN DOUBT - See a Professional.
Unless your hair is Black to Dark Brown or has excessive Red Undertones, Three Levels can be done with little risk they make "Extra Lift" kits with 30 Volume Developer and they work fine on Untreated hair Levels 4 through Level 8 and you can always wait 48 to 72 hours and reapply. Not an 'Ideal' solution, but I have seen excellent results the majority of the time.
People keep saying this ‘colour doesn’t lift colour’ and it’s like yes I know, however, box kits have hydrogen peroxide to lift existing colour and deposit their colour. I was wanting to lighten my (pure) henna hair without bleach and I used a level 7 golden blonde. It lightened it to a lovely red and deposited golden tones. So those box dyes do lift. Just you need to not put it on your roots.
I was told my a professional hair colorist to use clarifying or cleansing shampoo to lighten hair, if it's too dark. She said you can't lighten hair with hair color. The lighter hair color won't lift the darker hair color. She told me to wait for my gray roots to come in, then, I can go down to one shade lighter. She told me to stay within two shades lighter or darker than my natural hair color, which I don't know what it is any longer, since I have been coloring my hair since i was 37 years old.
Joan Gentile yeah it’s part of a slow lightening process. I started with sun in, then a shampoo with extra bicarbonate and lemon, then I used the level 7 box dye. The gold was nice to make the whole thing look nicer and brighter. I’m trying to clarify as much as I can before I use a level 8 which is in a light auburn - close to my natural colour. My roots look bad but I think it’s worth lifting the colour on lengths before I re colour roots. I’m using a lot of coconut oil on the ends in between washes. Hopefully in a few weeks it will be ready for the level 8 colour. I lifted it from about a 5-6 to a 7. I’m in a strict stage 4 lockdown so no hairdressers and I’m enjoying the process of learning and experimenting.
Wow you really got me on the “going back in with a developer and over processing the rest of your hair,” lol. In my case at least I was using a permanent box dye the same level as my hair for 2 years instead of a lightener, but still...really caused myself unnecessary damage to my mid shaft and ends. It refreshed my color some but it wasn’t really worth it; and each time i overlapped the existing color it was less refreshing and more dull. My hair got to the point where it just wasn’t very receptive to that color anymore.
I'm interested in what you said about not needing to recolor your but just do roots. So, what if your color has faded alot? Should you used a semi- permanent or something? Would it be hard to match the roots? Would you cover the roots too? My hair is very fragile because of box haircolor so I am trying to avoid further damage. Do you have a recommendation? Thank you for sharing your knowledge! It's a learning curve to color at home but the professionals were destroying my hair too!
Experimenting with color is so fun!! It helps that I have short hair. Haha depends on your definition of crazy 😋 I've done multiple rainbow looks with blue, lime green, pink, purple, orange with diff root colors. One of my other favs was the purple roots with lime green ends. But my current color I think is my fav for a long term look and it is a teal blue root, melting into bright hot pink! (With the mid shaft being purple due to the color melting). So much fun!
I went from never dying my hair in my whole life to platinum blonde to black a week after, to blood red, to dark brown, I haven't dye my hair since then
I could have used these tips a year and a half ago! Lol. I had an allergic reaction to PPD from the cheap boxed dyes. Even though I don’t do my hair myself anymore, I couldn’t agree more with the tip of taking sessions to go from dark to light. These are all great tips!!
This vid is awesome! I just started working at Sally & know enough about hair coloring but my customers ask me to walk them through the process. So I’m trying to gain more knowledge. This was really informative & to the point. I know the basics but this taught me so much! Thank u!!🤩🤩😃😃👍👍👏👏💇♀️💇♀️♥️♥️
Thank you so much for this I can no longer afford 250 dollars at the salon it adds up. I have been in depression and in need of a change and this helps a lot
My hair Turned out great because of your video. I don’t know if I would’ve known exactly what to do without watching your videos beforehand. Thank you 😊
Thank you! I've been doing my roots at home since April (quarantine) and I think it looks fine. If I want highlights or anything, I wait for the salon visit!
Thank you for sharing my hair es so un need.I have had 3 appointments with my hair dresser and she had an excuse every time I go that she forgot i was coming. After this COVID my hair needs to get done. Wish me luck it comes out.
I have dark brown hair with gray roots which is in the front of my head. I been using Sally's dark redish brown to cover my roots, but it only last about 3 weeks and then I have to do it all over again, I don't do the rest of my curly natural hair bc I'm trying not to damage it anymore than I have to due to excessive hair dying. what do you recommend??
Having to retouch grays every 3 weeks is actually very normal! If you aren’t pulling the color through the rest of your hair you don’t need to worry about excessive damage
Great info ...2 things I would have done wrong so for that it’s an A plus video . Have decided to spend the money and go to a salon known for coloring . Thank you !
Hi, I'm so glad you did this video. Now I'm only dying my hair because of the gray. I have gray throughout my hair. So, what do I use for that? And I'm dark brown. I'm in my late 40's. Would it look better if I go 2 shades lighter? Thank you for your time
Hi, I've been dying my hair for many many years now and have always used a box dye. I've had no problems but sometime last year I decided I wanted to return to my original colour which is a golden brown. As you pointed out I thought I could buy a brown and I'd have brown hair at the end of it but it didn't turn out like that!! I attempted about 3 times but nothing happened so I bought a colour remover and it took me 3 times for the colour to lift. When it lifted I was so happy 😁 I then repeated the same colour, golden brown but it wasn't the right colour as it was too light so thought using a darker brown would work but that came out looking black! I was nearly at breaking point where I thought I couldn't be bothered but then I left it for about 2 weeks and the brown started to come through! But my roots started to come through and they are grey roots so they needed colouring. I bought the golden brown and covered my whole hair. BUT because the roots were grey the roots didn't really take and so I was left with a reddish colour. It wasn't working out for me 😊. I then bought a chestnut brown thinking it would blend in with the roots! But it didn't. I've FINALLY got the golden brown on my hair right now but my roots are lighter. I bought a dark chocolate 'box dye' because I don't know how to bleach or do any of the professional stuff your saying and am scared I could mess it up! So box dye it is for me right now! On the box it says chocolate brown but on the lid it says black brown. Can you please tell me, is my hair going to be black? .I do want darker roots but would love it to be dark brown and not black! I am planning on going to a salon when they open but I want my hair done now lol. I like the colour of my hair but it's just the roots that are in need of fixing! I know box dye is not great but it's all I've ever known and it's always worked for me. I know I've mentioned I did this and that but I did take breaks with the dyin. I did all the above over the year and gave my hair a rest between everything! Please can you or anyone that knows so I don't mess things up lol. It's just that I know black is the hardest colour to lift as that is the colour I had been doing for years.! Keep safe. 😊💚👋
@@valeriekugler7932 grey hair comes back due to hair growth! I think she just wanted your money and thought you didn't know! When I do my hair I don't get any grey for about 2 months but then the greys start coming after that!! Don't colour your hair on a regular basis because it will damage it. I space it out.
These are GREAT tips! I'm happy to know I do/follow almost all of them already lol I did a tonne of research/watched a TONNE of youtube videos from professionals (mainly Guy Tang) before starting to do my own hair. It's been a lot of fun, I've learned a lot. Started to do a couple friends' hair now that I'm confident that I won't damage it (and I always play it safe). I've been playing a LOT with bright colors over the last year. I'm no longer bleaching/lightening, other than the roots; I'm just using semi permanent color, letting it fade, then dying over top. I over bleached a bit last time (gave it some TLC and it's good now, but took a couple months) and realized I didn't want to risk that again as I'm growing my hair out now. I had rainbow with blue roots, then cool toned rainbow with pink, blue and purple roots, then played with purple roots and white tips, then added lime green to the tips after a little while (that was really cool!). Now I'm at teal blue roots with gradient into pink tips (causing a purple fade effect in the mid shaft). I think this is my favorite for a long term look. Thanks again for the video! How you speak is very informative and thorough!!
Thank you so much!! Your hair looks (great photo!) and sounds amazing!! I’ve always loved playing around with colors- such a fun way to express yourself. You’re doing everything right!! Yay ☺️ appreciate you watching and commenting so much!
@@castlesandcandy thank you!! I've been having so much fun with both the colors and hair cut/style. My stylist loves it! She gets to play with a new cut every time I see her! It IS a really fun way to express yourself and creativity 😊 Thanks for sharing the great information! It's wonderful people like you that helped me not destroy my hair, and also recognize when to go to a professional! 😁
I definitely would love to see a how to lighten your hair at home tutorial! My natural hair color is a level 3 but has been dyed red at the ends. I now want to dye my roots a deep dark purple and the ends a silvery purple. I don't trust the knowledge of the employees at my local Sally's so I need YOUR help. Thanks so much!
Hey I just wanted to know if I'm right here I've never dyed my hair like it's virgin hair so like for me the first step is to bleach and I want one unnatural hair colour maybe a shade of purple and my natural hair are shade of brown . And for bleach I have to start from ends and go to the roots and then wash dry my hair (a question here should I just wash my hairs with just water or should I use some shampoo or conditioner here?) Then the vaseline application on my forehead, ear ,neck And after that I need to mix my hair colour with developer and do a patch test behind my ear area ? Then apply the hair colour leave it for 30 minutes or whatever the product prescribes then wash my hair with shampoo and conditioner ? Is this all correct please help me out .
Hi Morgan, thanks for you're video. I was wondering if you could tell me how do you know how much color to mix with a developer and what kinds should you use? I've had my hair colored in the salmon about 4 to 5 times in my lifetime but I'm trying to save money and do it myself because the salon gets expensive and i really can't afford it anymore and i don't like using those box colors from the stores. My hair is like a medium to dark brown and that's the way i would like to keep it. The only thing is i have alot of grey or should i say white around the front of my face and just around the edges of my face. That kinda runs in the family. If you could give me some advice on how much color you use and if and what kind of developer i need I'd really appreciate it. I'm glad that you're a hair stylist and you're giving us some good information and that's appreciated because alot of people don't wanna do that sometimes. Thanks again.
I had a jar of coconut oil for hair sitting right next to me the last time I dyed my hair blue black & got it all over my face. 😨 I just put some on a rag to see if it would wipe it off, and I couldn't believe how good it worked! 😲
🖤Party pooper here 💩🤣I started coloring my hair black when I was about 12 😳I am going to be 34 thursday..🖤 🌟🌟all the warnings were true🌟🌟 My hair would no doubt be much nicer if I hadn't put it through so much abuse. I miss my old hair🖤 🤷♀️
Thank you for your video. My hair is usually lighter at the ends than the roots. I chose a 5n at Sally’s and I didn’t like how it seemed lighter than my natural roots. Not super noticeable but more reddish than I’m used to. The 4n was much better when applied to just my roots then the ends for last half. Though the ends were darker than I’m used to at that point. Wondering if I did a 4n on roots, then 5n towards then end and combed through, would make me look a 🤡 ? lol
Is that your natural hair color on the lower half of your hair? That's the color I am aiming for! 😍 My picture is current, it's a semi-permanent blue that ended in being a dark bluish purple! I was trying to find a good color remover without bleach, what would you recommend? I bleached it prior to dying it this color, so do not want to damage my hair further. 🙃
It's honestly really tricky for me to formulate for each person without seeing your hair, knowing the history etc. I would recommend trying eSalon because its professional color and a colorist formulates for you based on your needs and wants! I have a link in my latest video to get your first kit for $10. Thanks for watching!
Lalldharee Yovana I’ve been using nice n easy from the drugstore for 30 years and my hair is in good condition and a nice colour. I don’t wash my hair more than twice a week , never use a cheap shampoo and always leave the conditioner in for half an hour and rarely blow dry and only straighten the next day after washing then use a good serum when dry.
I bleached my hair at home and went from like a level 4 to something like a level 8 in one sitting with a few darker and lighter pieces here and there. Is it totally even and professional? Nah. But my hair is completely healthy and it's perfect enough to get my hair purple, so I'm super happy with it.
I don’t understand the reasoning behind not using the box dye. I spent so much money going to salons.. never got what I wanted. It was like a cookie cutter, everyone wanted to make me blonde, all I wanted was highlights. Been using L’Oréal color expert for like 6 years & I like my hair so much better & it’s so much healthier. I get compliments every time I get the highlights just right too.
I explained in the video the reason is the developer is usually higher than necessary and because they do not have to disclose ingredients there can be metals etc found in the product. If you're happy thats great but from my stand point I prefer professional grade products especially when the price point is the same :)
I bought a kit, but I also bought a box of Framar Foil, Salon brand 20V, a tub of Clairol BW 2 Lightener/Bleach, Wella Color Charm in Medium Sandy Blonde, and also a bottle of Wella Activator, Clips, Shears, Cape, etc. And, I'm obviously NOT going to use the kit, now that I've watched your video, how possible is it doing this myself, I'm wondering how I'll accomplish the back, and still work my way up to the roots, without oversaturating the bleach, by the time I get to the end?? Also, as seen from another Cosmotologist, I want to mix two Wella shades, to make it look natural. And as my roots have 98% grown out, I cut my hair and bangs, shorter; is it possible for me to DIY without too much worry?!? 😍
No it doesn’t . They use 20-30 developer in box dye. It will lighten your roots and you end up with trashy hair. If you are depositing color you only need 10 developer for demi permanent and it’s less damage but hey ruin your hair if you want to, she isn’t stopping you
Hi Morgan i loved your tips!just help me here: i dyed my hair level 6 but since my hair is so dark it didnt show much of the color..so i want to go lighter to a 7...is it possible?i mean, do i have to cut my hair like we have to do if i would have dyed my hair a level 1 or 2?
I wish I saw this before I did my hair. I bleached and did fashion colors and it came out fine (small amount of breakage) but you gave some really great tips. I'm thinking of adding in more pieces, how long should I wait between bleach sessions? My hair is black if you couldn't tell from the thumbnail, lol. Last time I waited 2 weeks but wanted to know if a week is ok, also I'm doing like blue and purple color. Thanks 💜
kalisha jones it really depends on the integrity of your hair! Is it pretty healthy over all? Typically you want to let it rest at least 4 weeks but 6 is even better! If you aren’t going over the areas that have already been lightened you won’t need to wait that long though :) thanks for watching!
@@castlesandcandy I appreciate you so much for actually taking the time to reply back. I would say it's pretty healthy, I wash & deep condition weekly and try to maintain a proper moisture/protein balance plus I use heat sparingly. I used olaplex last time with joico cream bleach, 20 volume developer and a wella toner. I only did parts in the front and I just want to add a little more.
You sound like a pro girl!! I’d give it the two weeks still but definitely use olaplex again and that should help protect your hair! Serious props for how well you’re taking care of your hair! Love vibrant colors 😍💜
@@castlesandcandy Truthfully I just watched a ton of stylists here on TH-cam before I took the plunge, lol. Same with taking care of my hair. Thanks sooo much for the advice. I feel like since I'm not a pro most stylists here on TH-cam will not give out the info you have, they always advise to go to a salon and they don't reply to comments. Thanks again 💜
Thank you so much for all this info! I like how concise you are, talk fast and are so easy to understand. I had virgin hair, naturally a level 4.5 my stylist said with about 50% grey. My stylist dyed it with demi-permanent Wella Color Touch Plus in a level 7. The formula is suppose to cover 70% of the grey. She thought my hair came out a half shade too light. This was 8 weeks ago. Now I need to color my roots. I want to do it at home, so she suggested a level 6 for the roots. Just ordered the same brand dye on Amazon with a 1.6% emulsion like she suggested. My question is, I am going to JUST do my roots when the dye comes. At what point in the future do I dye my whole head? I don’t want to damage my hair. Thank you!
Hi just run it through your whole hair with 15 mins to go, leaving on the roots for longer this will freshen your hair running the left over colour through the ends.
What about after not dying your hair for two years and doing the ombré L’Oréal Kit in my ends (before I watched this video) how long should I wait before going to Sally’s to grab some blonde/something for my hair to come out looking better than what it is now (preferably a blonde). My hair is brown (kind of on the darker side but not black). Any recommendations on what I should get from Sally’s? And how long I should wait before putting more blonde/bleach? Thank you!!
Hairdressers get mad that she’s giving tips? Ridiculous! As a single mom I can’t afford to go to a salon. I buy the most expensive color at the beauty supply and do it myself for $20 a month.
I have virgin hair that is a level 7. I want to do some face framing balayage that would be about a level 8.5-9 at the ends, but i’m leaving my roots at their natural color. Would i need to use any kind of lightener or bleach since i have never put color on my hair? I know that color cannot lift color, but isn’t that in cases when the hair has already been dyed? I’m going to use 20 volume developer regardless of whether i use color or lightener.
It's honestly really tricky for me to formulate for each person without seeing your hair, knowing the history etc. I would recommend trying eSalon because its professional color and a colorist formulates for you based on your needs and wants! What if yo hair is two different colors like my roots grew out (black) and the rest of my hair is brown do you think it will be different shades and there will be color banding?
Hi Morgan! Thank you for the helpful tips! I have dark hair with hair color on it. I want to cover a few grey hairs and also try giving myself balayage highlights. I know my hair is going to lift to orange. Would I use a blue based hair color to tone versus using a toner that is designed for light hair? Additionally, will the color I use to tone, blend my greys or will I wind up with hot root? Please advise. Thank you!!!
Hey! Unfortunately those all would be separate applications- one for covering grays, one balayage and a toner after. You need a permanent with 20 vol for gray, bleach because you have color on your hair for balayage and a Demi perm to tone. Yes a blue or neutral to cancel out orange for toner. Toning with blue is hard so I recommend a neutral!
Are there hair color box brands you recommend that will help red hair last longer? Are there secrets to keeping it last. I understand red dye molecules are larger, and thus don’t seep in like other colors, resulting in fade with each wash, but I feel I may not be using the right products to keep my color lasting past 4-6 weeks. Also, what would you recommend for going a lighter red. Do I really have to use a bleach first to go lighter?
Thank you for this ! When I dye my own hair I tend to get results closer to what I want vs when I go to a stylist (the one that did mine perfectly retired) I want to use good products instead of box dye ans save money
hey girl...so Ive been wanting to dye my hair and dont wanna buy box dye and Ive been considering Sallys....what do you recommend product wise for natural non-dyed dark brown hair to be able to go to a blue black? Any suggestion there
Great video! thanks for sharing. When I apply the color (which is dark brown) I only touch the new roots, the problem is when I wash it, it bleed into the rest of my hair, it ruins my new highlights and make them darker and greenish. It has been a huge stress for me and my hair having to highlight it often to keep the highlights bright. Any tips.?
Is the product really liquidy or is it just running as you wash? If you can wet the rest of your hair (not roots) before rinsing out the color it could help!
Question: I have Purple and pink Elumen Play in my hair and have had it in my naturally dark hair for a couple years. I’m ready to go back to dark brown/black. I bought Elumen return and some new dark hair dye to apply over it after. Will this work or am I missing key steps?
What does lightener and developmental do to your hair? I want to dye my hair a blue color, using blue jean baby from attic fox, and I need to bleach my hair!
New sub. Thank you for the info. I would like to go a bit lighter for my medium blonde hair. I would just like a light blonde not platinum. Is there any hair dye out there that is natural? I know you said no box dye. They have a new revlon total clean. All natural vegan etc. Have you heard of it ? If so what do you think of it?
I haven’t heard of it I’m sorry! The reason I usually say no to box dye is because the developer used is typically harsher on your hair than needed but depending on if you have color on your hair already using a blonde might not work /: you’d have to use bleach to get it lighter if there’s existing color- if there isn’t your fine to use color!
how did the color hold up? I am looking to use this for the same reasons--a brown-black over a previous burgundy that was peeking through, but both faded to a dark brown. did the blue tint last?
I hope you do let us see you do this step by step! I’ve been thinking about dying my hair for a few years now bc I am starting to get gray (and I’m only 30 😪) never been dyed before only bleached at the tips but most of it has been cut off...
What about red? My color fades so if I only did my roots it would be a completely different color on the bottom if I didn't do my whole head each time? Do I use a 10 or 20vol on my hair?

I have gray hair coming out at the roots - I was interested in if you had any tips for us older people who color our hair so it would come in thicker as I am a guilty one of using drugstore coloring box kits. I have been using Sally Beauty produts just recently trying to care for broken hair and make the new growth come in healthy and thicker.
Thank you for the info. I like that you communicate clearly & concisely. How often can I safely refresh my roots. By the third week my roots are showing.
C.L. Swearingen every three weeks is fine if that’s what your roots need for coverage, just make sure to not pull all the way through onto the existing color (to avoid damage!) thanks so much for watching!

Also!!! Stylist charge ridiculous prices!!!
Thanks 😊
Cee Bee Same here ❤️
Makeup wipes or micellar water removes hair dye!! From your skin and even your counters! Best thing I’ve ever figured out while coloring my hair at home
I never knew that! Great tip!
*looking for hair stains to try micellar water out*
I buy "Seabreeze" just to remove hair dye stains from my skin.
Follow up.
I used the Micellar Water and it definitely worked.
Baby wipes work too on skin walls and floors lol
Im a hairstylist too and actually loved this video for the pure reason you're helping peoples hair and saving us color corrections!
Elizabeth Newman thank you!!! I sincerely appreciate that perspective!
"You want it to look natural"
**starts wondering how deep blue can look natural**
Bruh same... I look like ketchup here and I'm planning on changing my hair color
It all falls into the color wheel! Certain colors are mixed to create natural hair color formulas. I’m currently on this chapter in my pursuit of my cosmetology license. 😁
Natural like stones, natural like the deep sea, natural like you, how you feel normal and natural even if the world doesnt see it. But you feel it
@@vampiradeathrockerbatxq762 I’ll never understand why people think they look good with blue, teal, green, bright red hair.

"Never buy drugstore kits"
Me sitting here with two boxes of dye from target: thanks.
Good news is there’s still time to return then lol

Thank you for these added tips
Finally a video that is concise, and NOT a waste of my time. You speak well. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much! I’m so happy it was helpful 💗
Morgan Elizabeth You’re welcome. And it was right to the point without a bunch of needless chatter for the first 10 minutes.
Thank you so much! Glad that was helpful 💗
I agree with you .I did hair for 16 years I do use a drugstore hair color and also used professional colors I really dont see much of a difference .I'm a level 4 and I use a.medium brown cause drugstore colors do come out darker ....so I think it's ok to go go darker .just my opinion lol great video
I have light brown hair and put dark red in my hair and haven't had a problem with drugstore hair color either.
@@SVETKA28 ok but dark gold blonde sounds GORGEOUS
Simple Rules For Home Color:
1) NEVER try to go more than 3 Levels LIGHTER in ONE Application.
Never do more than two levels not three. ;)
Me sitting here with dye soaking in my hair and finding out I did everything wrong: 👁👄👁
Update: my hair is vibrant purple and it turned out greAt :)
Am I’m sure your hair is fine
Wow you really got me on the “going back in with a developer and over processing the rest of your hair,” lol. In my case at least I was using a permanent box dye the same level as my hair for 2 years instead of a lightener, but still...really caused myself unnecessary damage to my mid shaft and ends. It refreshed my color some but it wasn’t really worth it; and each time i overlapped the existing color it was less refreshing and more dull. My hair got to the point where it just wasn’t very receptive to that color anymore.
Thank you oracle. My hair looks human now, thanks to you ❤️
Hey friends! I posted a video filled with my best tips for HEALTHY hair- so important when we're coloring! Be sure to check it out!
Whats the craziest thing you've ever done to your hair?! Mine has been pink, purple, blue, black- I used to experiment A LOT!
Morgan Elizabeth please post a video on how to from blond to dark hair. I like your videos
Purple, yellow, green, blue, and red 😂😂
I went from never dying my hair in my whole life to platinum blonde to black a week after, to blood red, to dark brown, I haven't dye my hair since then
@Jana's Land thank you!! 😊 I've been loving playing with color the last year 💚
And thank you for checking out my channel 😁
I could have used these tips a year and a half ago! Lol. I had an allergic reaction to PPD from the cheap boxed dyes. Even though I don’t do my hair myself anymore, I couldn’t agree more with the tip of taking sessions to go from dark to light. These are all great tips!!

Working on it :)

Thank you so much! I messed up my hair color & now I know what I did wrong
Thanks so much didn’t know about harsh box developer. Will go to Sally
Keep safe. 😊💚👋
One colorist told me that if they color my hair my gray would not return as fast that's not true .
I'm happy to know I do/follow almost all of them already lol
I did a tonne of research/watched a TONNE of youtube videos from professionals (mainly Guy Tang) before starting to do my own hair.

I am greying I love reddish brown color so you suggest ION from Sally’s or what other brands
🖤Party pooper here 💩🤣I started coloring my hair black when I was about 12 😳I am going to be 34 thursday..🖤
🌟🌟all the warnings were true🌟🌟
My hair would no doubt be much nicer if I hadn't put it through so much abuse.
Wondering if I did a 4n on roots, then 5n towards then end and combed through, would make me look a 🤡 ? lol
Very informative and now I have a better idea on how the i levels work.
Hii Dr please suggest me a good hair dye brand, I have been colouring my Grey roots am still young, my hair has become messy.... 😔😔😔
@@Natalie-gb8tt thank you dear
I don’t understand developer & toner... So it’s prob best I don’t even try to use it! I will talk to my hair stylist next time I get a cut..
Ive used sun-in for 4 years to keep my hair golden blond. Can i colotlr over this?? I was thinking about going back to fire engine red.
Because sun in isnt a professional grade product I dont have a lot of information about it- I would check their website for recommendations/tips!
So i dyed it bright red and it worked perfect!!! And it seems to be holding the color very well!!
NOOO! DO NOT PUT ANY COLOR OVER SUN-IN. It will ruin your hair and damage it. Get your hair back to healthy first.
I wouldn't try it except perhaps a hidden area which makes no different if it goes to a crazy color.
The color on the box ALWAYS matches the outcome.
No it doesn’t . They use 20-30 developer in box dye. It will lighten your roots and you end up with trashy hair. If you are depositing color you only need 10 developer for demi permanent and it’s less damage but hey ruin your hair if you want to, she isn’t stopping you
is it correct I should have dye my hair first then have a protein keratin treatment?
Suggest some good brands to start with please I’ve problem with grey
How do you dye your color hair? Teal with semi permanent what do you have to mix with it?

What brand do you use? How long your color last?
This is why I stopped coloring my hair ......yes I'm all grey and loving it !!
Good for you! I think all gray is really pretty!
what professional hair brands at sallys do you reccomend?!
I love those pictures in the background.
Homegoods 🥰
Morgan Berticevich did you make them or buy them offline
I have a link in my latest video to get your first kit for $10. Thanks for watching!
What if yo hair is two different colors like my roots grew out (black) and the rest of my hair is brown do you think it will be different shades and there will be color banding?
I’m unsure about your question- you’re wanting to go darker? It sounds like you’d need two formulas- one for roots one for mid strand/ends :)
Morgan Elizabeth thank youu and no I’m planning on going red 😭
Is it okay if I just do my roots last like the last 20 minutes or sum ?
@@castlesandcandy Thank you!
My school is strict! When I get to High School, Ima dye my hair 💖PINK💖 Like me Gacha character!
I'm sure the pink will look awesome on you😃💕
What colors do you have to mix to make a teal color hair coloring with semi permanent?
Are there hair color box brands you recommend that will help red hair last longer? Are there secrets to keeping it last. I understand red dye molecules are larger, and thus don’t seep in like other colors, resulting in fade with each wash, but I feel I may not be using the right products to keep my color lasting past 4-6 weeks.
Also, what would you recommend for going a lighter red. Do I really have to use a bleach first to go lighter?
I don’t recommend any box color unfortunately, sorry!
I dyed my hair a greyish black. It looks natural because my brown shows a little through and I definitely stained my whole body.
Love that!! Have a major soft spot in my heart for grays- I’ve been looking at gray or lavender 🥰
@@castlesandcandy Grey lavender or grey blue are my dream colors fr!
@@amberfoltynewicz8874 what did you use to get the grey color?
Thank you for this ! When I dye my own hair I tend to get results closer to what I want vs when I go to a stylist (the one that did mine perfectly retired) I want to use good products instead of box dye ans save money
hey girl...so Ive been wanting to dye my hair and dont wanna buy box dye and Ive been considering Sallys....what do you recommend product wise for natural non-dyed dark brown hair to be able to go to a blue black? Any suggestion there
I’ve found olive oil to take dye stains off my skin, only with semi permanent dye tho
Use Vaseline around your lining of your hair it helps
Great video! thanks for sharing. When I apply the color (which is dark brown) I only touch the new roots, the problem is when I wash it, it bleed into the rest of my hair, it ruins my new highlights and make them darker and greenish. It has been a huge stress for me and my hair having to highlight it often to keep the highlights bright. Any tips.?
Is the product really liquidy or is it just running as you wash? If you can wet the rest of your hair (not roots) before rinsing out the color it could help!
Morgan Elizabeth It is running as I wash. I do wet my hair before wetting the roots when washing but it’s not helping
Thank you. So informative and super helpful.
Thank you so much for this video 🥰
I'm a level 3 my professional older sister told me and she is a hair artist.
how did the color hold up? I am looking to use this for the same reasons--a brown-black over a previous burgundy that was peeking through, but both faded to a dark brown. did the blue tint last?
I'm confused as to what blue tint youre talking about?
I hope you do let us see you do this step by step! I’ve been thinking about dying my hair for a few years now bc I am starting to get gray (and I’m only 30 😪) never been dyed before only bleached at the tips but most of it has been cut off...
What about red? My color fades so if I only did my roots it would be a completely different color on the bottom if I didn't do my whole head each time? Do I use a 10 or 20vol on my hair?

What brand at Sally’s did you like to use?
She is smart and fun 😊
I have gray hair coming out at the roots - I was interested in if you had any tips for us older people who color our hair so it would come in thicker as I am a guilty one of using drugstore coloring box kits. I have been using Sally Beauty produts just recently trying to care for broken hair and make the new growth come in healthy and thicker.
Do you do your own hair? I would love to see your process.
I have another video showing the process :)
