      Is she using permanent dye to cover her greys I have had rainbow hair then various split dyes for last four years previously I had white blonde on top dark brown underneath now I've gone back to 90s chunky highlights and I've been bleaching my roots before putting a demo permanent on it in ask blonde cool dark brown and iced mocha to give my underneath dimension I have thick striped underneath in the two Brown shades then my mowk hawk section is ash blonde mocha and cool dark brown stripes to the back of my head the iced mocha colour is fading really quickly but I was worried if I put it on my natural hair it would not cover my greys my hair is probably level 5 brown with 50% grey should I be using permanent colour ? I've dyed my own hair since being a teen-ager I did few years going to salon in my early twenties then had four kids could not afford to go salon anymore but I had the 90 s chunky highlights in the late 90s early 2000s so I knew how to do it from my stylist bk then just not sure about covering grey without bleaching my hair first the whole point in going bk dark was to give my hair a rest to recover from years or fashion colours and bleach

    I am a hairstylist and I honestly don't understand what all the hate for box dye is about, I've gotten plenty of clients who have come in with box dyed hair asking for highlights and it's never been an issue with me, they lift just fine and the hair is just as healthy. I feel like all the hate comes from this wierd insecurity that some people can do just fine on their own

    Your explanation of “they may not have the means to do salon quality,” is amazing. I’d love to be able to have my hair done at a salon. But the last time I had it professionally done, it was $250. That’s my electric bill and gas bill for a month together. Some of us don’t want to have grey hair in their early 30’s, but still want to be able to put food on the table, heat in our homes during the winter.

      Yes!!! I love my hair stylist and will go to her forever to get my hair cut. But when I decided to get it dyed..? Oh man. It cost me double ($250 with tip) because my hair is so thick and long and needed more dye. Not totally worth the money when I can do it for a fraction at home.

    My wife just paid $180 for a cut and dye at a salon and they absolutely ruined it. She wanted brown with deep burgundy highlights and a trim with her hair down to collar bone length. They cut her long hair above her shoulders and dyed it BLAZE ORANGE. When the stylist turned her around to see it in the mirror the started crying and said she looked like a Chucky doll. She cried for the next 5 hours straight. I can’t help how short she cut it, but this video helped me a lot and I just finished successfully re-dying her orange hair to a deep dark black cherry that she is very happy with.

    Thanks so much for being the voice of non-judgey hair stylists. I wish there were more of you! I used to see a great hairdresser who complimented me on the richness and tone of my hair….until I told her it was a box colour and then she changed on a dime to saying the colour was patchy and my hair was in terrible condition yada yada (this was all in the same appointment!). Even though she’s very talented I never went back to her after that. I felt like a naughty child the way she was carrying on. I’ve since found a great alternative hairdresser locally who understands why I box dye my roots in between colour appointments ;)

    I've received more compliments from my box dyed hair than I ever did from any professional salon color and many of those compliments came from hairdressers who were shocked that I had boxed hair color in my hair. Eventually, I had to give up box coloring because it would not color my grey anymore. I've since let my hair go salt and pepper now, and I love it. Glad to be free of the maintenance.

    I am an old hairdresser it was my profession as a young woman and the things you have said are really helpful for anyone that is dying there hair at home but I would have said if someone as shorter hair and won't to refresh the ends of there hair they can just comb the DIY that is already on there hair to the ends and leave for 5 mins that way you only need 1 box of diy you xplained the steps so we'll 😊

      My hairdresser told me never apply the colour onto bits or ends that are already coloured to 'refresh' old colour, as it damages it. My hair is in way better condition than friends who do that.

    • @dsvance1
      @dsvance1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sarahholland2600 It may depend on the color. I started covering gray at age 19 using Darkest Brown, closest to my natural color. I never needed to refresh. With blonde (for a decade) and now especially with red, the color fades some need refreshing. Not every time, but occasionally.

  • @Ms7of8
    @Ms7of8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    I've been dying my hair red (light to medium auburn) for almost 40 years. I would go through periods of having it salon dyed; however, one can't leave even a modest salon for less than $200 these days. For me, it's just gotten prohibitively expensive. With that said, red hair dye fades -- a lot ! I do my roots about every five weeks and always need to apply the dye to the remainder of my hair for five minutes or so. It always looks even toned. One of the most important things after dying the hair red (I can't speak for other colors, since I've always done the red dye), is to wear a hat in the sun ! Otherwise, the hair will become oxidized and look dreadful, e.g., brassy, uneven and fried. Other than my own two cents (lol), I pretty much have been following all the recommendations Ms. Gabi suggests in this video. Very helpful -- thank you.

    When I used to go to a salon for hair cuts, I regularly had other patrons wanting my hair color... "I want my hair color to look like that.." I was flattered, as I used box dyes (two different shades mixed together). It looked nice and shiny. The hair stylist would tell them it looked good because my grey hair (under the dye) was the reason it shined and made the color look good. I stopped getting my hair styled also and do it myself now. TH-cam has been a great resource for that.
    Thanks for this video on how to do it properly.

    • @Irish-Triplet
      @Irish-Triplet ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @fizzysodaghost Since I am a little older, I go a little lighter. I used to mix medium golden brown with medium auburn. Now I use Revlon Colorsilk, mixing (45) Bright Auburn and (54) Light Golden Brown. It's inexpensive and fades a little, but I only wash it 2x a week and use the Colorsilk condtioner (that comes with the dye) as my twice-weekly treatment .

    Yep. Your understanding of why some of us dye our own hair with boxed product is exactly why I'm following you. Hair shaming is just as unacceptable as any other kind of shaming; it especially irritates me that people who are ostensibly there to make others feel better about themselves through styling will take an opportunity to be contemptuous of clients trying to look better!
    I'm not going every month to professionally have my red hair re-done by a professional. I have ALL respect for what a great stylist does, but simply can not invest more than $1,000 a year in the service.

      I've box dyed for years, even got a compliment from my hairstylist. I only do my roots, using half a box. I have just above the shoulder length, med-light weight hair.
      I pour half amounts & shake in an empty clean previous dispenser bottle (finger over open top!). Starting at the back of my part line, with the pointed tip, squeeze out line of dye. With gloved index finger press lightly down to spread out dye.
      Using tip of bottle draw (forehead to back of crown) a new part line half inch (or adjust spacing) parallel from 1st. Squeeze another line of dye back to front, press lightly. Continue parting parallel horizontal lines to ears. Make sure to get temple area hairs.
      The back isn't as fussy. I squeeze in zig zag patterns the sections under the hair. Then reach under with glove to distribute dye on roots. Then toward end of time gather rest of dry hair to get some dye on it. I stick with the same color & brand.
      Sorry for long explanation, hope it helps. I could never use a brush to apply by myself.
      Gabi is a good teacher!

    My hairdressers have *always* had to mix up more color in the middle of applying; usually they go back once to mix up more. My last hairdresser, on my last time to go to her, went back *5* times, for a total of 6 mixings. I went to her for a year. She knows I have unusually thick hair. She knows it is long. Then, after she's rinsed the color off, she insists on putting on all this polisher and shiner and I don't know what, so that when I leave, my hair is a completely different color red (brighter, brassier) than it is after I wash it. I've told her I don't like product on my hair. But of course, in the area I now live, anything one tells a hairdresser is seen as a "suggestion". Guess what, ladies? It's MY hair; I'm having it MY way. Thank you, Glam Girl Gabi, for helping me learn what I need to know to look the way I want to look.

    So many times I have gone to the professional hairdresser, tell them what color I want and they put a box dye on my hair, then charge $50. Many many times. Other times I go in for more detailed colors like highlights. In my experience, detailed bleach and highlights cause my hair to break and box dies do not. After the last time I went to a professional, I am still trying to grow out the breakage on the entire left side of my head. I have decided to just do box dyes on myself and I feel like my hair is happier. So thank you for being open about explaining this.

    Diluting the color with a conditioner for refreshing the lengths and ends works quite well add twice as much conditioner as color for any shade deeper than level 6, equal amounts for shades lighter than 6.

    I’m 60 years old and was blessed with very thick dark hair. I have used boxed dyes since the late 80s and never ever gone to a hairdresser to do it. I’ve always been careful to only do the roots in order to cover the grey, and no longer go as dark as the colour I was born with. Hate to see older women with dyed jet black hair and overloaded ends, horrible.

    I started cutting and coloring my own hair during the pandemic. I did see my hairdresser once before vaccines and she was dressed up like she was ready to go inside Chernobyl. I understand why she was being careful but I just don’t want to go to a salon anymore. It was also prohibitively expensive. I appreciate and understand why it’s expensive, but I just cannot justify the costs anymore. My hair is healthy and I can trim it anytime I want to now. My sister helps me to make sure it’s straight.

    _Nobody talks about this: When you wash your hair, particularly in hot water, you risk opening up the cuticle and letting the color bleed out. Palmer recommended washing colored hair in cooler water: "That makes your hair cuticle stay closed and keeps your hair color trapped inside the strands of hair. Warm water makes the cuticle more likely to open and let the color out, which is why color fades so fast. Also,t he type of shampoo, conditioner, and products you use at home are the ultimate reason why your color is going to last or fade,. Drugstore shampoos may feel like they're getting your hair and scalp really clean, but they can have chemicals in them that are linked to fading of professional hair color. If you invest in your products, you'll realize how much more life you'll get from your color. Some drugstore brands of shampoo and conditioner can contain synthetic ingredients like sulfates, parabens, silicone, and other ingredients that strip hair of its color. When you invest in high-quality hair care, you're investing in your hair color and overall hair health._ (Copied & pasted)

    I've been using Revlon Colorsilk in dark ash blonde for years now. It's amazingly good and very inexpensive. I can usually get a box for under $3. Sometimes I buy Colorsilk medium ash blonde and mix a capful of it plus a capful of developer (1:1 ratio) in with the dark ash blonde. My hair is naturally dark blonde/light brown and loves to pull red or orange, so I can't go all the way medium ash blonde without a toner. Lately I've been experimenting with the Adore brand of toner mixed with conditioner to neutralize red/orange tones. I have used the colors titanium and platinum (two parts conditioner to one part toner) and I'm happy with the results. I'm seriously considering trying to do a root shadow using Colorsilk light ash brown or perhaps using a toner and 6% developer.

    thank you!! I've never had luck when getting my hair coloured by a hairdresser, often times they would use a completely wrong colour to what I asked and discussed with the hairdresser.
    in March 2021 I asked for a purple with blue undertone, quite an easy feat, even to custom mix. You'd THINK that an experienced hairdresser knows colour theory.... nope :')
    it was straight up a red with slight purple sheen. I was sooooo mad, I walked out, didn't pay and came back the next day when I had cooled down. I spoke with the owner and apparently this wasnt the first time that the girl I was paired with had done this. Needless to say she was fired because of the amount of times she'd done this.

Its rather labour intensive to do my hair and a stylist has done the training and uses quality products so i have NEVER complained about price.s ..and anytime I did go to an off brand salon for a dye... I learned you really get what you pay for!!I Want to add the box dye I generally use its Garnier fructis but it has to be in the 100% colour formula which is double pigmented for grey versus the reg fructis, So far it doesnt hot root me and it covers my grey well.Ty for the tips Gabi!

    Singular most important thing is to follow directions. Also most box color have 1-800 numbers or an online chat where you can get help if you need it. Also before doing anything read the directions all the way through. Have all you materials in place. Make sure you have no distractions that can cause you to stop, like kids, packages, pets. Distractions are a thing you don’t have in the salon.

Yay what good luck. 18 momths ago almost all my hair fell out, due to ? No idea why. I was getting ready to re-dye because I look like hell in all grey, white and black. Thank god I watched because I realize my regrown hair is too fragile for any dye, box or otherwise. I have always dyed exactly as shown here, so for now there isnt any tip or trick to minimize harshness. Hopefully I can strengthen it over more time. Wish me luck!

    Thank you so much for your tips. Box dye has been my only option for years....first due to time and later it was the high salon fees. I needed to fit this task into my schedule on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings. A couple of weekend shampoos also eliminated that strong chemical odor to a very large degree. Some workplaces have staff sensitive to certain smells, which I was respectful of.

    Ah it is so nice to see you and other hair dressers addressing this issue without judgement. I've done both, getting coloured at hairdresser and on my own. I can honestly say that my personal experience was the price point i had to go to, to find a hair dresser that did an amazing job of my hair was over $500 AUD. Now I'm living in the UK that price point seems similar and when i did treat myself the hairdresser scalp bleached my hair and it was yellow/orange (hot roots) in a week and my hair started falling out! I'm now turning ro videos like this to save my money and return to doing my hair on my own without damaging it.

  • @amygalvin1799
    @amygalvin1799 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Be careful when choosing a shade if you have a high percent of gray coverage. The white/ gray will grab the red pigment & appear as a hot root( bright red) without any neutral / natural tones blended in to helps cover the gray.

    • @dsvance1
      @dsvance1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      On my last (as in final) visit to my colorist, we argued for an hour about what she should do to correct the color, which is why I was there that day. She talked about using ash blonde mixed with red (I want medium to light red) or orange (I want my red to have an orange base; orange/red hair runs in the family, I have the skin but not the hair, and my hair is gray now). I thought she understood and was going to mix together the red, ash, and orange. Well, she gave me orange-blonde hair. It's a beautiful color, but it's not me and I don't know how she did it. I think she mixed just orange and ash.
      Also, I was blonde for a decade when I had an absolutely gifted and fabulous colorist in Studio City (Wendy). She worked from an ash blonde base. I have no idea what or how she mixed it. I had a thousand shades of blonde. Now I want a thousand shades of red-orange-blondish in my hair.
      My point is, try mixing in some ash blonde for those roots to keep them from being hot. I'm a rank amateur still, but that's what I've picked up so far. Oh, and I'm a cool tone (I know, strange with the red, but it looks awesome with the right shade). You might need a different shade of blonde depending on your skin tone.

    I’m a natural redhead who now has a lot of gray patches. This is the same box color and brand that I use and my hair comes out WAAAAY better than any of the 10 professional colorists I’ve gone to over the past several years. But now that I have a lot of gray I use the 6R root touch up with 30 drops of Gray Magic on just the roots to cover all the gray because my gray is very resistant. Once that’s processed, I wash and dry my hair. Then I apply the regular 6R all over from root to tip. Let process, then wash, dry and style. Looks amazing every time and no one would ever guess it’s box color. Saves me thousands of dollars and I never have to worry that my will turn out terrible again.

    Hi I’m new here and I’m only 2 minutes into the video but I am subbing because I love this!! I’ve boxed dyed my hair a lot when I was younger, when I got the financial stability to get my hair done in a salon I did tons of research, got it done, it was not what I wanted and my hair proceeded to fall out a lot more than it ever had. Got my hair back into a good place and tried again, thinking it must have been the salon. Same results- tons of damage, hair falling out, and I didn’t even like the resulting color. It seemed like the thing to do as I matured, go to the salon and invest in a good color but it’s yet to work out for me and I just like my box dye!!

Hair gets saturated thru-n-thru. May go past the times.. as to make sure of they dying process. Ie. If 5 minutes is recommended, 8 or so, minutes is the better way to go.

    Surprised 6R which is a auburn range is giving her more of a level 8CR/ copper red.
    Tip; if you have a large percentage of white or gray when doing reds you may need to add a Natural tone in the same level example half 6R dual parts half 6N. Otherwise you may pull bright red… called hot roots. Many manufacturers have color blends such as Natural Cooper Red wig 100% gray coverage.

    I moved to a small town in north Texas. The people here are clannish, cliquish. I can't get an appointment to have my hair done. So, I learned to cut & color my own hair.
    I learned on my own, no schools. I know what I like & looks good, I don't do anyone else's hair. People will often comment on my hair, telling me how beautiful it is. Then they start asking me where I go for hair care. I stopped telling anyone that I do it all myself as I have done for my entire life. The *ONE* time I told someone that I do my own hair, their opinion of my hair totally flipped to a negative one. Since then, I don't tell anyone.
    I started taking biosil 2 years ago. It made my hair grow faster, stronger, more healthy.

It should have looked great with my skin tone and hazel eyes but he picked the worst red (not the previously mentioned hairdresser) That sealed the deal for me, I would be the only one dying my hair! I will admit, I have made mistakes...pink, green but they all have been learning experiences!

    This is so helpful since my mom always want to due her hair every month. I make her switch to cellophane/cellowax every month since it’s too harsh if she use dye box every month and then I’ll just use a dye box every 3 months for her cause she can’t wait for 6 months cause of her gray hair. But she is dissatisfied in cellophane cause it couldn’t cover gray hair. Hopefully we can find a great coverage for gray hair I’ll just follow your instructions. Thanks

      I’m doing a grey coverage box dye tutorial soon! I’m just waiting for my friend’s roots to come in so I can demo. I don’t have grey yet otherwise I would do it on myself.

      @@GlamGirlGabi oh that’s perfect my love! 💖✨ I didn’t expect you to comment 😍 since I’m bad at english 😆🌝 I actually subscribe to you because you have a clear explanation in your video and I always want to dye my hair every 6 months or when I’m stressed. Maybe it became my coping mechanism so I always find a good youtube channel coz I dye my hair also with box dye. It’s common here in Philippines and I didn’t even know that what is the difference of the salon dye and box dye cause I also want to buy some salon dyes if it’s possible. Anyways I’ll wait for your videos 😘
