Nell is a band singer who made his official debut in the music industry in January 2001 after continuing to raise his ground in the underground, starting with live club activities on July 31, 1999. The name of the band group is Nell. That's why they call them Nell. I’ve seen people talk about how feel good this song is. To me, there is something beautifully melancholy and nostalgic about it. It feels like I’ve just watched a movie where there’s a happy ending but it’s tugged at my heart stings and I’m crying at the end. I think it’s their best title track and we really get to see their vocals pop off 😊

That's my favorite part too. I personally just wish the beat drop had a little more punch because that's such a powerful part of the song imo and for me that would make the final chorus perfect. I hope I AM and Ditto can be serious contenders for SOTY. I also think IVE could win AOTY.

This episode is a real reminder of the expertise of our classical musicians... Kevin and Owen going head to head was such a blast!! But I have to apologize to Owen on this one, I hear G major too. I can just hear the variations more naturally, like if you wanted to harmonize with either the vocals or the instrumentals, you would definitely be in G major.
To add to Kevin and Owen's debate, I hear both, but what decides it for me is, even though you hear G much more than E minor, the song feels more melancholic/sad than happy. Owen said it perfectly: "It's technicaly in G, but in my heart is in E". Emotion-wise: E. Theory-wise: G.
that's interesting, when i listen to it, it feels more uplifting than anything. coupled with the confident lyrics and the (literal) runway walk, i thought it sounded more like an anthem. that being said, i think it's great to hear what everyone has to say about it. people hear music differently and in so many ways!

I think it the deciding factor is just that it makes more sense in Em, first and foremost it is a pop song, the fact that it ends in an E should already be obvious enough. But also in my head as someone use to "gig logic", everything is in major because it's just easier 😂
@@monascatalyst3567 I think it's hard to define major/minor via if it feels "happier" and "melancholic" in a pop song, in pop, there are many other tracks, instruments and fx used to make the song sounds like it's a certain vibe, so it's easy to be mislead when we purely judge via "feel". But if you strip away everything and listen purely to the chord progression alone, it does sound more "sad" than just purely positive. Say if we never heard this song, and we just heard the single notes of the main melody being played on the piano (but slower) just from the notes alone we'd assume it was a melancholic song.

"I AM" is by far my SOTY of 2023 and I don't think any song coming out this year will beat it. It has such an emotional connection with me. I am such a sucker for melancholy, nostalgic sounding songs that feel epic and grand and THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I LOVE.
Definitely one of the best kpop songs ever imo.

I agree. Last year, Love Dive was my personal SOTY (with a few serious contenders, ESPECIALLY feel my rhythm) and I never thought anything by IVE could beat it.
Well, I AM is out and I'm seriously thinking this did indeed beat Love Dive.
I seriously think this indeed is SOTY and Ive's album is definitely top 3.
Seriously, I think only SOME bsides could beat this song (fromis_9's attitude, Purple Kiss autopilot and Enhypen's DARK BLOOD intro song are the most serious contenders rn) and even THAT seems hard.
They're having a comeback in October so looking forward to listening to new songs from them. Definitely my favourite group of the year.

I AM is literally IVE's most interesting musicality. They pulled off synth-wave genre and most kpop artists wouldn't dare to try this genre. I commend the song so much.

This song has been in my playlist for over a month, and I still haven’t gotten tired of it. Anytime I need to dance out my worries, I think of this song. I also want to point out that these girls got hate for having “bad vocals” before this album came out, and to release this after all that hate is such a slap in the face to the people that ridiculed them. I’m glad they’ve found their spot in the industry, and I’m excited to see their future endeavors.

Tbh I kinda know why this song still makes me tears up whenever I listen to it despite being released many months ago. Must be the nostalgic feeling and heavenly-like harmonies they sang in there.
It's the same feeling when I listen to Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Rey. Both are grand sounding yet the melancholy feels really hits deep inside.

The whole song feels to me like how going on tour all over the world might feel like, with all the ascending and descending vibes making it feel like going on multiple flights one after another, and I feel like the visual and musical concepts of the entire song were chosen so well cuz they just perfectly match each other

As someone who only did GCSE music I managed to keep up with half of the things being said which I’m actually quite proud of 😅 With ‘I am’ I always think that the 12/8 makes it sound like we’re marching but with no destination and we’re all a bit more than tipsy. I think that it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on their second title song ‘Love Dive’. Or if you react to B-sides, in the ‘I Have IVE’ Album specifically, I know that Hypnosis caught a lot of people off guard and that would be quite fun to see what you all think about it too.
It’s definitely making use of the relative major/minor relationship of Gmajor and Eminor, but I would say that it mostly avoids the common D# that is at least somewhat common in Eminor. In addition, I would argue that the song simply makes very efficient use of the V-Vi chord progression of Gmajor, and the Vi chord of course just happens to be the Eminor I chord. That’s why Eminor has such a presence. On the other hand, there’s a certain avoidance of plain Gmajor V chords (though the Gmajor V chord as a whole is very prevalent) and transitions to a brief Emajor in Yujin’s high note. A transition from Gmajor to Emajor is pretty unusual whereas Eminor to Emajor would make a lot more sense. So in general, the song is Gmajor, but it uses a heavy emphasis on the Vi chord to make its Emajor transition natural.

@@ReacttotheKI fully support the argument that the F major chord in the bridge is a Neapolitan chord, or at least a part of an extended tonicization section.
Em - F - B - E7 - Am (and there goes the loop) is what I hear and the E7 chord is definitely a secondary dominant, not a Picardy third chord.
The “big E major chord” is actually an E7 chord because the bass line literally outlines all the chord members in the background (E - G# - B - D - E)

I think the song is in G major (support Kevin's argument). And then it modulates to/tonicize Am in the bridge (support Owen's argument).
The chord progression in the bridge goes: Am - D - G - Em - F - B7 - E (and then it loops back to the initial progression)
I would argue that this song is in G major and it tonicizes Am in the bridge by using an extended tonicization where F is an Augmented 6 chord, followed by a V of V (B7) and ends with a hanging half cadence on E (dominant of Am).
It is kind of ambiguous because it does not resolve to Am (what they are trying to tonicize), but based on those strong chromatically-altered predominant chords I must say this bridge is tonicizing Am. And no F major is not a Neapolitan chord for me anymore, it's an Augmented 6 now haha.

I think it's in A Dorian. That would explain why it feels fine that each section starts with Am, since it's the i chord. That would make the chord progression in the chorus i-IV-VII-v.
Also it's adorable.
I like that it starts full and gets lighter with the instrumentals and also in octaves too. I thought it was okay at first, but it’s a nice girly summer song.
I love how they talked about the talk-sing style of rap in the song- imo alot of the best kpop songs take this approach, because sometimes trying to spit sick verses or whatever can hamper an otherwise very cohesive and good song, part of the reason I think alot of 2nd gen GGs hold up so well
