    I’m pretty sure the cotman is less lightfast, and has less binder so it can be a tad bit chalkier than the professional version. But I think that’s it, so they’re a really good alternative!

    • @dawnchesbro4189
      @dawnchesbro4189 2 ปีที่แล้ว +306

      Do you mean more binder? In my experience student watercolors have less pigment and more binder, which means it looks chalky when it dries on the page. And yes, they are less lightest vs the pro series. I think if artists can afford the pro series, it's worth the investment. But if getting cotman lowers the barrier for a starting artist, it's a great entry point!

    • @TheYoshi3579
      @TheYoshi3579 2 ปีที่แล้ว +254

      @@dawnchesbro4189 more binder makes sense as they tend to use less pigment to make cheaper paints, but the matte appearance of the paints makes me think they use a much cheaper pigment and less binder, rather than the pro series which are shiny, with a higher quality pigment and an even amount of binder and pigment. But I agree, if you’re not sure if you like watercolor, these are a great place to start. But the pro series is always worth it.

      @@TheYoshi3579 You should go with your gut because you're spot on. We actually use pigment that isn't that much worse with the only side effects being less light-fast and certain colors (magenta seems to be the most affected) tend to not be as vibrant. Adding more binder makes it look too chalky and gives it a matte finish.

      You can check out a Kuretake Gansai Tambi set. The pans are huge and the quality is pretty good. It's a Japanese brand but you can find it in Amazon I'm pretty sure. You can get a big 18 color set for like $20. I think the biggest you can get is a 48 color for $47 which is super. The pans are removable so if you wanna put them in your own tray or replace them you can. There's travel versions too though I'd still recommend the normal versions just because of how big the pans are. They're really worth it.

    • @ilz_y
      @ilz_y 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    • @silivrengamer
      @silivrengamer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@ilz_y that’s true a majority of the time but not having black or white is like trying to paint with only red, blue, and yellow. Yes, you can do it, but it’s an artificial rule you’ve made for yourself. I’ve actually done that mixing exercise with all the compliments and while it does make a dark color, sometimes I just want a shade of a color I already have and adding a complimentary color will muddy it rather than darkening it.
      If we’ve learned anything from these videos it’s that if it makes you happy, go for you. I certainly wasn’t implying that everyone has to use black or needs it. Just that I wanted it and my set didn’t come with it so I bought a tube. :)

      If she wants to use Black paint then then that's her choice. Yes it's not traditional and it is best practice in traditional painting, however, there is a lot of snobbery surrounding watercolour painting (all mediums to an extent), that makes it less accessible to people getting into art and painting and can also thwart the creative process. I studied art at College and it honestly sucked all the fun and creativity out of it for me.

    One of my favorite students came to visit me one day somewhere in/after basic training. She was doing so wonderfully well, back to the ol' hometown before being sent to Afghanistan, I believe. The only problem was a distinct lack of art supplies.
    I had a version of this field case and couldn't think of any better use than to send it with her. I don't know if it would be considered contraband, but she sent me a little sketch of what she saw from her one-person studio.
    It's a prized possession that reminds me how amazing it is to be a teacher. Being able to help students go out into the world with skills that give them confidence makes me smile every time ☺️

    Unless you’re selling your original work definitely cheap out where you can. If you’re selling work you should probably start upgrading if possible just for the sake of lightfastness and making sure your work will stand the test of time.
    For oil painting I just use what I can get my hands on. I stretch my own canvases using often just cheap calico (or whatever my fabric store has a sale on). I get the frames from repurposing prints or paintings from charity shops. I prep it with emulsion instead of gesso. I use hardware linseed oil and white spirit.
    Honestly it works, my paintings from about 10 years ago are holding up fine. Right now I’m a skint engineering student who paints for fun. I focus on enjoyment. I’ve occasionally used some more expensive materials I have been gifted but I save them. There’s a couple of things like certain shades of paint I like having a higher quality. I’m hoping to one day be able to invest a bit more in my art supplies and if I am ever in a position to sell work I would want to use professional supplies. Right now I want to practice and get better so if it works it works 🤷‍♂️. And tbh repurposing things is half the fun

    Wow, he’s been using that watercolor for 5 years? Whereas me, who literally makes the green color vanish after 3 days? Damn!

      Idk if this is sarcastic or not, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. The half pans in this kit can be removed and replaced. I actually recommend taking all the colors out and rearranging them as soon as you get it. In such a small space, it's so easy to make a mess of the colors. If you arrange the colors by how light or dark they are, you can minimize the damage. If you don't mind getting some of the colors mixed up a little, then I wouldn't worry too much beyond keeping the white and reds far apart. Those reds are so so strong, it's ridiculous

    Usualy water collours are priced by how long they last on the paper for example a pro version can last more than 100 years with the painting looking just the same but a cheap one can last less than a year ( i learnd it in art school )

    I remember buying a payne gray of the professional series and put it in my cotman palette and wondering why everything turned so much dark than before. Professionals are definitely more pigmented, but it means also that it lasts long, now my Payne gray is the only in the palette that's not almost over lol

    Iirc, there's a negligible difference in lightfastness between their artist vs student quality paints.

    I would feel cheated if I found this out 💀
    But that’s just because I don’t professionally water color. I do just about every art form and painting technique, but I’m not a pro or anything.
    The only professional item I have is an easel I inherited from my grandmother or something and my sewing machine. I have a cricut to help with my paper craft, too.
    I feel like such a pro using my crayola watercolor tho 😭
    The few professional items I have make me feel so special as I am but a child in this lawless land known as “art.”

    I'll work my way up to that.
    My main medium is acrylic because it's what I've mostly used and know the tricks to using it.
    I just got a small box of tubed watercolor to give it a try. I haven't used them since art school. Maybe I'll like it and can use multiple mediums.
    I'll just never use oil paints. Too many cons outweigh the pros fir me in oil paints.

    The main difference besides “lightfast” are the types of pigments used in the professional paint don’t shift color and don’t contain dyes to help keep the color like the student grade one. Unless selling your work, I would definitely recommend the student grade. I’ve replaced most paint by now but the case and remaining paint are still going strong after over a decade of use as well 😊

  • @nicolle2126
    @nicolle2126 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    i think the biggest difference is their lightfastedness ie the student paints will fade over time from exposure to the sun. But if you're someone who paints in sketchbooks a lot then it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'm a fan of the van gogh student watercolors myself, they're super pigmented as far as student paints go ^^
