(STUPID EASY!) How To Tailor A Baggy T-Shirt

  • In this video I'm going to show you how to take a $10 shirt that I got from Target and turn it into a nice flattering slim fit t-shirt!
Every guy has this problem. It's frustrating when you buy a t-shirt that says that it's slim fit or athletic fit and you put it on and it's super baggy and unfitted isn't it? A lot of retailers like H&M, American Eagle, Gap, and Target claim to make slim fit shirts but then you put it on and it doesn't fit very well at all. Well that's because mass produced clothes are made to fit everyone, and because of that they don't fit anyone.
The first thing we want to do is gather our materials. We need a sewing machine, some sewing pins, a fabric measuring tape, and some fabric scissors. Start out by measuring your t -shirt for the fit that you want. I like a nice V-taper to my shirts, but this isn't about me it's about you. If you are a bigger guy or a skinny guy you can use your sewing pins to give your shirt the appearance that you want too.
Next, you want to use those sewing pins to give your baggy t-shirt a much better look to it. Use a straight stitch set at 2.5 which is a standard stitch as it comes from the store. After you do that cut off the extra fabric leaving 5/8ths of an inch on what's called the seam allowance. Finish it off with zigzag stitch or pinking shears to prevent the edge from fraying on you and then you're good to go!

Hey brother! Love your work. Could you tackle button up shirts and the gap at the chest area? As someone who wears bras but like the men’s button up shirts, I don’t like the gap between the buttons when I wear the shirt. People can see my bra you know? Was wondering what options are there besides a snap pin, etc. thanks!!!

I use my tailor's chalk with all sorts of projects. Highly recommend his suggestion to use that for guiding your stitch line. Get BOTH white and blue (the blue is for marking white or really light color fabrics). And use a utility knife or sharp pocket knife to scrape the drawing edge of the chalk to refresh the surface and sort of sharpen the chalk. Tailor chalk will get burnished by handling it and rubbing it on fabric. Burnished chalk doesn't draw well, the same way old burnished pencil erasers don't erase well. They both need to have the burnished surface scraped away (for the chalk) or abraded away (for the eraser). Nobody ever taught me about sharpening the chalk for each project, but it makes a world of difference.

As far as I can tell, some of the best tailors of all time were men. Bespoke suits, alterations in general and denim. Literally all types of tailoring/sewing. Hell, even a lot of the big designer names are men.

    • @apogeotropism1714
      @apogeotropism1714 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I’m also a man, btw. Been tailoring my clothes for the last couple years.
Mostly because of extreme frustration with my local tailors always getting the taper on my pants wrong. I’d have to always make 2-3 trips, for each pair of pants, just to get them right. And this becomes extremely time consuming and aggravating, when you have multiple pairs of chinos that need to be altered .
Especially, when you get new clothes and want to wear them immediately.
But, the tailor is backed up and it takes a whole 1-2 weeks just to get your clothes back the first time. For them all to be wrong. And then, 2-3 more trips after that for each pair, to get them right.
      I said fuck that!
Bought a sewing machine and started doing it myself and now I get it right typically the 1st, or, 2nd try and it only takes me about 20-30min for each pair. Depending on how long it takes to measure my lines, draw a guide and do the actual sewing.

As a tall (6'4") but slim dude, it's literally impossible to find shirts that fit me probably. Even shirts that are already supposed to be slim fit end up being super baggy around the waste in sizes that are long enough. But yeah, this actually looks relatively easy to do, so I'll have to give it a shot (I'll definitely have to start with some cheapo shirts first though lol).

In the early 90s I was lucky enough to be taught by teachers in High School class called "Home Economics" and not only they taught us how to sew using a machine we also sew by hand which improved my sewing skills. Perhaps this has already mentioned - but when working with t-shirt style material….I recommend sewing the zigzag BEFORE trimming the seam…avoids that run-off stitch issue!

Thanks man. I have a band tee that I'm absolutely in love with, but it's awfully baggy in all the wrong places, especially on my back. I'm going to practice on some cheap shirts, and hopefully I'll be able to fix up mine.

In the past (like 15-20+ years ago) women’s tees conformed better to the body and were shorter. I so preferred them😂

As a fairly skinny guy with very broad shoulders, I hate how every garment looks boxy/ baggy on me. I don't have a sewing machine, but if I did, this is one of the mods I'd probably do most on my clothes.
