Reinforcement lapping and staggering

  • Reinforcement lapping is unavoidable many times. The standard length of rebar is around 12 m and hence if the structural member length is more than that, we always need a lap in rebar. This is the case for any structural member including beams, slabs and columns. This structural design tutorial focuses on reinforcement lap and staggering of the lap. In fact, many structural design courses just cover modelling of buildings in ETABS or Staad pro and do not focus on essential detailing rules like lapping and staggering. The way you place and lap rebars decides the strength of the member and not just the design.
    Often young and entry level civil and structural engineers just focus on modelling and they don’t realize how incomplete they are without detailing understanding. A design intent can be conveyed to site only by appreciating all this detailing rules and lap rules and the staggering rules. As a civil engineer you should always remember that, a client will not know how good an engineer you are with your ETABS modelling abilities. They know your skills if you demonstrate a good detail. If you are able to solve their problems at site. In that way site engineering is not different from structural engineering. What you learn in structural design is applied in site. Now it is up to you to appreciate what you are doing as a site engineer. If you know structural engineering and then if you are a site engineer, you will be able to do a lot of justice to your work. Same is the case when you know site aspects and then you become a structural engineer. What am trying to say is, both are inseparable.

      Please clarify what you mean by basic IS codes explanation.
      I have already mentioned the clause in code which says about staggering of laps.
