Is Sunken Slab always a 4-side discontinuous Slab?

  • Sunken slabs are very common in building structures. Mostly toilet slabs are sunken to accommodate services pipes inside it.
Manually designing a sunken slab has been a confusion for young civil & structural engineers.
In this video a students question on design of sunken slab is discussed.
A sunken slab can be conservatively designed as a 4-side discontinuous slab.
This may lead to slight over design of the span bottom steel of the slab.
There will be slight fixity at the support due to the monolithic slab beam joint.
However generally the stiffness of this joint is not so huge and hence a minimum steel provided there at the top will ensure design safety.
Even if the top steel provided is slightly lesser, redistribution can take place within limits and ensure the sunken slab is safe.
If you want to learn more about redistribution here is a blog

The slab connecting at two different levels of beam on either sides.....will it make any difference in beam design??
Do we need to consider the torsion aspects of beam design here??

Levels should not have any difference. Torsion related, you can see my blog www.civilera.com/post/torsion-in-beams

We have to convert regular slab into sunken slab ? I'm not an civil engineer but constructing my house and changed the plan missing the sunken slab
Most kindly reply if there any good solution or way out to carry the same

Please consult a structural engineer in your locality and get this done. TH-cam is only for information and learning.
Just like you should not treat yourself seeing youtube, structural solutions shall not be done by your own as there are many data needed for solutions . Consult a qualified structural engineer

Why do we often suppose slabs are simply supported but in real slabs have fixed support in form of columns and beams

Well ! Where needed we have to consider the slab with its stiffness. I do it all the time for important projects

Sir how to pour different grade of concrete at beam column junction for eg in beam M-60 and column M-30

      Puddling of concrete

Pour the higher grade at the joints. It needs to be controlled at site. By the way ,This question is not relevant to the Video. Why dont you ask separately.
