Can you cover plastic bags to store food, if they are food grade or not, and how they react to heat like boiling in the bag, or marinates with low ph levels?

Speaking about air fryers - do you know something more about the acrylamide from air friers compared to the other methods of making food ?
I remember there was a spark that it is extremely dangerous as f.e air fryer fries can contain few times more of it than any other method but since the short burst of outrage. I haven't seen anything worth notice on the topic. Would love to have even a short from a source that is trustwory.

This one isn't correct. Teflon itself is a microplastic but not a poisonous material. The "forever chemical" PFOA is used in the manufacturing but not present in your pan.
Yes, you should change your flaking pan, but it's not a huge chemical risk.
"Technically, there are no health concerns with Teflon, specifically. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), “there are no proven risks to humans from using cookware coated with Teflon (or other non-stick surfaces).”
But some experts are concerned about the health effects of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a chemical that’s been used in the production of Teflon in the past. PFOA is one of thousands of chemicals in a family called polyflouroalkyl substances (PFAS) that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says “can lead to adverse health outcomes” in humans if consumed or absorbed. PFAS chemicals can stay in the body and accumulate over time. “Studies indicate that PFOA … can cause reproductive and developmental, liver and kidney, and immunological effects in laboratory animals. Both chemicals have caused tumors in animal studies,” the EPA says."
Plus "PFOA hasn't been used in the production of Teflon since 2013."
We're exposed to it in contaminated water because so much has been released into our environment.
      Quotes from cancercenter com.
There's lots of sites with misinformation but I believe that this one is correct and you can probably easily find the government sources that it's based on.

Does *heat* no longer send these chems into the air via fumes? A Teflon rule of thumb is to never use around pet birds indoors because the fumes will kill them. What about US?

I mean, considering the fact that electricians warn against having your oven on self cleaning mode when you have parrots, the fumes can make them literally fall dead...
Oh yeah and it's generally advised not to cook with Teflon in the presence of pet birds either-
So no it doesn't kill you immediately, which is all the verification the FDA needs for it to be considered safe, yet we all know no one fell dead immediately after consuming vegetables with DDT sprayed on them in 1967, and many of those people got to live into their 90s
Just because it doesn't kill you doesn't mean it's safe

    • @SuperNGLP
      @SuperNGLP ปีที่แล้ว +205

Teflon doesn’t stick to anything. It doesn’t really react with anything. So when you eat it accidentally, it goes in and comes out. The worst thing is that you have to buy a new pan because the Teflon is coming off and everything sticks to it.
But I get why you would not want to eat it.

Our water supply was straight up contaminated with teflon for a good while, and the water company was so weird when I called to ask about it. They asked "Are you pregnant?" I wasn't. But I wish I had asked to see what they had said then. The lady put me in the phone with a different guy I guess they had lined up to dance around the issue, because he was doing some verbal tapdancing around all my questions about how dangerous it was. The only straight answer I could get was that when it eventually rained, it would lessen the amount of chemicals they couldn't clean out of the water. We were having a dry spell.

It was awhile after the phone call, but next time the water company sent another little pamphlet with the water test results, I read through every chemical and ppm found in the water. There was way more teflon than the safe limit, it was listed under its chemical name. There was other stuff in there, too. I bought filtered water for awhile, and have a water filter now, though I'm sure it doesn't clean out the teflon. And I always read those water test results from the water company, now.

Multiple DuPont and peer-reviewed studies have shown that Teflon starts to degrade and offgas toxic chemicals at 464F and other cheaper PTFE coatings degrade as low as 396F. Even if most air fryers only claim to go up to 450F, some studies have shown that while the air inside the fryer generally stay at around 450F or bellow, the coated surface of some models can reach higher than 500F!

The only place you should use metal to clean is on other, uncoated metals. Which is basically just grills and oven racks. Otherwise you're just going to scratch it. This is also true of cast iron seasoning. Using metal to clean it is scratching the coating. If you've seasoned it right, it should be fine with a dishrag and some dawn (or other mild dish soap).

The amount of contamination of Microplastics from air exposure is extremely minimal as compared to the leeching that occurs from non-stick coatings. It's completely inaccurate to say that it's only a concern if the coating flakes, studies have shown that leeching occurs regardless of flaking. In addition, the leech rate increases proportionate to the temperature, which is a problem for a air fryer that reach up to 400 to 450 degrees. There are also other chemical concerns with air fryers as well like BPA and various others. Some Air Fryer manufacturers disclose all potentially hazardous chemicals while others disclose nothing but you have to dig to find those disclosures.
A 2022 report from Consumer reports found that despite no PFOA or PFAS claims, many nonstick coatings still contained them. In addition, replacing PFAS / PFOAs for non-stick surfaces isn't a silver bullet, companies have simply replaced a known carcinogen with something else that we have zero information on including both chemical composition and any information on it's impact on the human body. As history has shown us time and time again, a lack of information likely indicates that any replacement is really not safe. If it were safe and healthy, they'd have no problems disclosing more information about the products. This is DuPont we are talking about here, the same company that pushed lead filled gas despite being aware of the risk which poisoned a generation of Americans and lead to an entire decade of violence. It's also the same company that infected 99.6% of the world with forever chemicals. The fact that this company is even still operating despite the incalculable damage to humanity should give you extreme pause whenever thinking about using any non-stick coating that isn't providing full disclosure. Is slightly less cleanup worth really worth poisoning yourself? (mind you, a well seasoned carbon steel is pretty non-stick and completely non-toxic)
Last, the Ceramic coating is not non-toxic. The chemical composition of the ceramic layer is not pure Ceramic and often a application layer is applied before the ceramic to help it bind to the pan better. Cookware made entirely out of ceramic can be non-toxic though (key words "can be") but the vast majority of the market uses cheap ceramic coatings with an application layer, both of which are vectors that likely introduce potential health hazards.
Really though the vast majority of people will not know the above. There's a complete lack of government oversight in regards to chemical disclosures for things customers will use to cook their food and an even greater lack of oversight in regards to what companies can and can't use for food contact surfaces, particular those under high temperatures.

Dyes are much easier to avoid than Teflon IMO. I guess I say that as a cook whose wrists break when using cast iron and someone whos allergic to dyes though lol but still, there's nothing dyed that I need and there are dye free alternatives to just about everything other than skittles lol a lot of people don't tolerate them well and just don't connect the dots. They can cause anything from headaches to rashes to anxiety/insomnia, hives, nausea, runny nose etc.

The family of chemicals in chemical nonstick coatings are one of the primary drivers of cancer and endocrine disruption of the past 80 years.
It is why many countries have banned or restricted their use, and why several of the largest cookware manufacturers in the US have committed to phase out specific chemicals to avoid the regulatory hammer.
Chemical nonstick coatings are incredibly bad for you. It is not fear mongering to point this out. It is incredibly harmful to be disingenuous and downplay the health impact of it.

    • @velvetchiharu

Iron is a big part of what makes blood what it is, so … it’s not really a comparison. You’re way better off cooking in a shitty iron pot and in fact a lot of “health conscious” people switch from non-stick Teflon to old fashioned steel or iron pans for safety reasons.
People will even put iron objects in the food they cook to help with iron deficiency in their diet (look up “iron fish.”)
PFOAs, Teflon etc is not an essential nutrient of the human diet and has been linked to causing cancer which is why he said not to even scratch it. If there was zero concern he wouldn’t bother warning against it on any level.
