      Only if you have a model that has adjustable suspension like AIRMATIC.
      It’s quite rare, but if you don’t then it’ll just do the gearbox, engine and steering weight for most models.

  • @utupe11
    @utupe11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Nick,
    some little additions to the ECO Gliding that I have noticed. Maybe you can confirm?
    One you covered it in general by stating “… if no traffic… “ and in fact, the Gliding will only work when driving manually and if no vehicle is in a previously selected ‘spacing’ from the Distronic system.
    Further, if exiting from a speed controlled part of your drive with the cancel switch on the steering wheel, the gliding mode will not come automatically even if in ECO. You would need to tap momentarily on the gas pedal to reactivate gliding.
    On another note… when switching between ECO, COMFORT, SPORT etc, does the power output of the engine really change, or is it more the way the power is delivered that make us feel the engine has more or less HP?? (besides shifting and suspension characteristics)
    A certain rpm gives a certain power or?
    I seem to recall that with ECO selected, the car still has full power available for top speed, just need to push pedal somewhat further.
    Looking forward to next weeks episodes of these great videos.
    As non-native speaker, my apologies if I have misunderstood something.
    Cheers,
    Tom

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tom, yes I think that’s right, I haven’t used Distronic for a long time but I’m sure that’s for all models where it’ll work only once the accelerator has been used and then your foot taken off.
      The different drive modes just control how responsive it is and quickly it’ll change through the gears. Technically speaking if you went to the kickdown in Eco, it would give you max power but would not change gear as quickly because you’re not in sport.
      Hope that makes sense 🤓

      Ooo very nice! So what this will do is give you more power from the engine in your sport mode.
      Sport mode offers Rev matching (if I remember) when downshifting.
      Try it next time you’re out, in Comfort at 40mph, drop down to 3rd gear. Then get back up to speed, then try it in sport mode.
      The engine will Rev up matching it meaning a super smooth gear change.
      Hope that helps!

    I change mine to individual every time as I have set it up for sports steering. I prefer the slightly extra weighting of the wheel and comfort for me is just too light. Off topic again slightly but `I have just learnt something this week given this is my first Mercedes and perhaps you can correct if wrong. If you come to a halt with a dual clutch auto it disengages until you pull away which is different to a torque converter auto. A few times I have been nearly caught out when the car rolls slightly backwards if you aren't careful before engaging again particularly if its gone into stop/start. I now make sure I press the brake pedal to get "hold" if Im not already just covering the brake. Its the first car I have experienced this with.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aha
      I’ll be honest Matthew I’m not too clued up on dual clutches and torque converters but yes if you use the hold mode on a hill this definitely helps that. It’s quite surprising how many people don’t know about the hold mode! 🤓

      Well with Mercedes from what I’ve seen, cars will always default to their default mode called Comfort which has lighter steering. You can change it once it’s started usually via a Sport mode button or Dynamic Select.

      @npoleary thank you for your prompt reply. The problem I am facing or rather a confusing thing is, I doubt my mercedes me app has bugged the mode select in the car, so even if I switch off the engine and restart the car by then which by default is in comfort mode, steering wheel and thr acceleration paddle is still stiff

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So the dynamic select will always start in a car’s default mode, in Mercedes it’s comfort. Sadly you can’t change this but you can change it straight away after starting.

    It can be more detailed in the first half of the video. Those you explained are almost self-explanatory as shown in the car screen. More info can be explained , Eg. What is the difference between esp on and off in sport and sport plus ? How does esp affect driving performance ?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey LCJ LCJ, don’t worry ESP is always on in all modes in most models. Most commonly it’ll be adjusted in AMG’s where it’ll usually switch off/ reduced in race modes. You can check on the screen, as you adjust Dynamic Select, it’ll show on the centre screen if it changes anything like that.
      ESP basically adjusts how much the wheels spin and it stands for Electronic Stability Control. In most cases you wouldn’t need to switch it off but it stops the wheels from spinning where there isn’t much traction.

    glide mode surely WASTES fuel.....unless I am mistaken, in normal modes when you lift off the throttle it cuts all fuel into the engine until it drops to low revs, in glide mode it keeps the engine running (with fuel) at idle speed

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey David, it depends on the road situation at the time 🤓
      If you’re travelling down a road and gliding (almost like having the car in neutral) to a point down the road sometimes it can be more efficient. Not always…but sometimes.
      Having the car in gear will have engine braking which when travelling down the road could cause you to have to slow down to much and then you’ll have to accelerate again where you might have got to the end of the road by gliding.

As much as I love my new Mercedes GLA and the MBUX it's really really really annoying that you have to change these setting like dynamic select mode that you want every time you start the car, and don't get me started on the "active lane keeping assist" which you have to go in the setting every single time you start the car which drives me mad, this is the single one thing why I will never buy another Mercedes.

      Ah I know with Dynamic Select, it would be great to have it start in whichever mode you’d like but I believe it’s due to emission regulations. Car’s have to start in their default mode :(
      Honestly, with car’s getting more advanced driver tech each year, you’ll find more driving assistance systems become standard on newly launched models. This isn’t just Mercedes, this will be for all manufacturers.
      With the Active Lane Keeping Assist, did you know the whole thing switches off if you indicate? I found that before when going over a solid white line, the car switches the system off temporarily even just tapping the indicator to do the 3 or 4 flashes.

      Hey Andy, yeah I know, it would be great if Hey Mercedes could do more but for safety you can only give commands for things on the screen.
      Passengers have access to Hey Mercedes too so controlling things that impact the car’s behaviour on the road aren’t allowed.

    I watch these vids just to see you 😅
    Ps. When the sport/sport+ mode is chosen the car lowers a bit as well and the engine does sound a tad more rough (on the C class)

      Haha thanks Carel!
      Well actually yes it could do! If you have the adjustable suspension option then it’ll do that too 🤓

      Does the sport and comfort have the same fuel consumption?

      Not necessarily, it depends how hard you press the accelerator pedal 🤓
      Sport mode will cause the revs to be higher because you’ll be in a lower gear and it will unlock more power from the engine so they will be slightly different.

    My GLE 400d in India doesn’t come with a Sport mode.
    In comfort mode when I floor the pedal, the engine revs to Max rpm.
    Is this the same as being in sport mode?

      Hi Farnham,
      Ah yes specification can vary from country to country but yes this will offer the same thing in terms of the engine’s top performance 🤓
