      @bigvwfan ah I mentioned in the video older hybrids offer that but trust me, you don’t want to do that even if it available.
      It’ll knock off about 15 to 20 MPG while it charges from the engine.

      @@npoleary After I'd posted the question I noticed you covered this, but I left it there in case you had anything further to add.
      I appreciate the comment about increased fuel consumption but there are situations where it might be helpful. I'm on a long journey, my battery is low and I'm approaching a city centre where I'd like to use the battery only option. Charging enroute is something my Golf GTE offers and doesn't impact the consumption that much.

    Great video. A few follow up questions and a comment re my A250e which I’ve had less than a week 1. When in EL does D+ increase or reduce the regen? Manual suggests you increase the regen using the D- 2. What does DAuto actually do? 3. Following the advice of the fb group I’ve put it in Eco and set the sat nav and the car does regen automatically using the speed limits and I don’t have the Eco assist package. By the way I have found your videos invaluable when learning how to drive all over again!

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey NicholasKinne,
      Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying them!
      1) D+ has no brake recuperation, but D, D- will brake more when lifting off of the accelerator
      2) DAuto is the car scanning ahead and adjusting automatically, so if you approach a car quickly it’ll apply regen to slow you down.
      3) Ah that’s good! Loads of tips and tricks and different ways to drive with a plug-in hybrid!

    • @NicholasKinnie
      @NicholasKinnie ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the quick and helpful response - all is clear now. Might be scope for another video on the PHEVs especially how to use the sat nav to help the car work out what the do to maximise range. The fb group says if you are on a return trip you set home as your final destination and your destination as the stopover so the car sees the whole journey. I assume that is correct?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No worries!
      You can do, the more info you feed into the car, the more it can optimise the route. You don’t have to have the voice readouts on though, you can have it silent 🤓

    • @NicholasKinnie
      @NicholasKinnie ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes thank you again - the only slight wrinkle I’ve found is if your sat nav entry for your intermediate destination does not exactly correspond to where are physically located when you arrive - the car then thinks you’ve not been to that destination and keeps trying to take you back there rather than your final destination.

    Good morning Nick, always great informative videos.
    I picked up a new CLA 250e P+ Shooting Brake on Tuesday.
    I was just wondering if there is a way to set charge times, so that the car is 100% charged ready for when I need it.
    I thought I’d figured it out, but the car seems to just charge to full from being plugged in, and only the preheat/AC triggers for the schedules I have set. So the car tends to be fully charged unnecessarily overnight.
    Thanks in advance

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey The Frag81, ooo very nice! Yes you’re right, all Mercedes will do this. Upon plug-in it will start charging instantly so there’s no way to control when it charges. It’ll just take power when it’s connected.

      Hey BThomas, thank you!
      Battery Level will try and keep the battery where it is, it has a higher priority to keep the battery level where it is. But due driving conditions and characteristics it may still go down over time but it shouldn’t go down as fast.

    Great video as always Nick. I've got 2 questions, 1. Selecting Battery Level seems to reduce heating/cooling output - is this normal behaviour? Also, what does the "Electric in City" option do?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe so! Although I’ve not owned one or driven one long term but it would make sense as it tries where possible to preserve the battery level so would probably limit the auxiliary heater too.
      When the Sat Nav is in use, Electric in the City will attempt to use Electric on the City based on the Sat Nav GPS location.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can add it to the list of potential future videos!
      But basically it depends on the car for a start (petrol / diesel / hybrid / electric)
      If it’s a hybrid 90% of the time just leave it in hybrid and charge it when you can (it’s cheaper when running on electric)
      The other times, you may want to save the battery for somewhen else or you may need to use sport mode to overtake someone or you may want the best range on electric, that’s when you can toggle the Dynamic Select button .

      Hi Kevin, ah yes heard this one before. Yes you’re absolutely right you shouldn’t “race” cold engines but all moderns cars including hybrids have soft limiters so the car physically won’t give you full power until normal engine temperature has been reached.

There are a lot of different interacting features here, and it seems to me that driving to get the best economy and most efficient use of the battery is quite complex in differing traffic conditions. Isn't there a combination of both? On a highway? GLE 2022, by the book, it has 4L/100km consumption. Which mean there is a mode where its using the engine as primary and the battery as secondary to supliment the engine request, to get that 4L/100km consumption. Which mode is that?
    I noticed Confort on highway isn't the way, it will consume all battery if you drive around 100km/h . I use sport mode to get that equilibrium and get my consumption down, or near 4.
    Do you have some information on this topic?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey George, no sadly there isn’t a mode on both unless you use Sport mode. It’s just the Dynamic Select modes shown in the video 🤓
      Also it’s a tricky one to work out because it depends on the journey you do. So for example, if you drove 2 miles up the road, went into the shops then drove back and the engine didn’t switch on, you will have achieved 999+ miles per gallon / unlimited litres per km, because you haven’t used any gallons of fuel, just electric.
      Another example, same trip but if you accelerated hard at the lights just once, then drove normally for the rest of it, then your MPG might be around 300-400 MPG because it averaged out on electric for most of it.
      And the final example, same trip again but this time you drove there on electric and then drove back with the engine on “Battery Level” (this mode uses the engine) then your MPG might be around the 100-200 MPG mark.
      Miles per gallon is very tricky to work out on hybrids because there is another source of power pushing you around which throws off stats. MPG is used to measure how much fuel we use, where as electric is measured in MPkWh (miles per kWh)
      This is why that figure seems high on short journeys but less on longer journeys. Of course the more you run on electric and plug it in, the better your MPG will be but with a plug-in hybrid you don’t have to to complete a journey.

    Hi Nick, I hope you’re well. Quick question regarding EV range of PHEVs… I just had 45 miles showing on the dial of my CLA250e. Which is 1 mile over the maximum range advertised. Is there a maximum potential range you can expect first thing in the morning? Or does no one really know how far these cars will go in the real world…

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dharmin,
      All cars in the UK undergo WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure) which in English is a realistic figure for range…..”in ideal conditions”.
      And those conditions are done at a strict 23°C, with a range of eco styled driving from 30mph to 50mph. This enables all manufacturers to offer a fair comparison between each other.
      Of course if it’s -5°C, then your range will take a hit up to 30% to 40%. A similar thing for motorway speeds, if you travel at very high speeds, the range will be less.
      It is possible to get more than advertised but you’ll need to be driving at an almost steady pace without stopping. Try to keep at the 30mph to 50mph and avoid traffic and you can do it! I’ve done it before! 🤓

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Terry, did your garage not explain? This is what happens with driving electric in cold weather. This will always happen on All-Electric or Plug-in hybrids because you’re more likely to be using heating.
      Lithium-ion batteries perform worse in the cold, the same thing would happen to your phone if left outside exposed to the elements.
      I produced a video on the things you can to help, one of which is Pre-Entry Clive Control prior to leaving as for one it’ll pre-condition the battery and it’ll pre-heat the interior too.
      th-cam.com/video/J2GM83dtbes/w-d-xo.html
      When the warmer weather rolls round, the range will go back up as the figure shown on cars is adaptive 🤓

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Eric, where abouts are you based? Sorry hard to tell in TH-cam comments.
      The average pence per kWh in the UK is currently around 28p.
      So if you charged a CLA 250e fully at this rate, it would work out to be £2.96. On WLTP this would give you up to 44 miles depending on conditions.
      On the petrol side, travel 44 miles and get 40MPG and if fuel is £1.65 a Litre, this will cost £8.25.
      A max of £5.29 saving.
      I’ve presumed a few things, but of course where we drive and how we drive influences it further so the savings per 44 miles may be less but it’ll tot up overtime 🤓👍🏼

      I agree, I would love for Mercedes to introduce such a mode via software update or something. I like to be able to set a speed threshold where the electric motor switches to petrol so as not waste BL unnecessarily.
      For example I could set the electric motor speed limit to 90kph and once I hit the freeway where our speed limits are 110kph here it would automatically switch to petrol as my speed gets over 90 and I settle into the freeway saving my battery level for when I exit the freeway and drop below 90kph again.

      Hey HannahBP,
      In the mode Battery Level, the car is going to prioritise using the engine. In certain scenarios when the car is using brake recuperation it can charge the battery a little. Just depends on the scenario at the time as the car is always trying to be as efficient as possible. If it can recapture some “lost energy” then it’ll do just that.
      In the video my comparison was that it doesn’t have a “charge” mode directly like first generation hybrids.
      Hope that answers your question!

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Now that depends on so many factors so one figure will not be the same for all people. The reason is because it depends on the starting charge of the battery, where you drive (town vs motorway), use of A/C & heating, windows open/closed, factory-fitted options such as wheel sizes, accessories fitted (post registration), variations in weather, driving styles, vehicle load & drive mode.
      If you stay at a steady speed (40 mph and 60 mph at an ambient temp of 23°C, you can achieve the car’s maximum range which again varies depending on what you have on your car. For a CLA 250e pretty sure it goes up to 44 miles based on conditions above.

      Hey Zina, this could be for a number of reasons, it does sound extreme out of context but…it could be because of a extremely short, start / stop journey with traffic and use of heating? Just a thought…
      Without knowing more about the journey and what happened it’s tricky to pin point what the cause was. Don’t suppose you grabbed the stat on your screen of the number of miles driven per kWh used?
      If it happens again on another variation of road / driving style, get in touch with your local dealership and they can check over a few specifics with you before actually booking it in 🤓
