So definitely have to agree with Ouai being the top choice, that’s the one I use, I have pretty oily hair, and that one really does the trick. I used to use the clarifying shampoo by Colorproof but it was inconvenient that it’s sold at such few places, I’d have to end up ordering online and that was annoying if I needed it in a pinch. Also, the Kristen Ess one smelled great but left my hair way too stripped. It is a more affordable option for those not looking to spend much, just didn’t work for me.
I’ve just started using Neutrogena clarifying shampoo with salicylic acid. Wow. I don’t use a lot of styling products, but knowing how often I need to use chemical exfoliants on my face, I went with that one. I’ve used it twice in the past month or so and LOVE the results. Qualifier: I have unprocessed hair which I seldom heat style, and that could be a factor. Loved the video (as always!) 😊
I want to try the oribe clarifying shampoo now! I’ve been using the oribe that has salicylic acid in it, basically as a clarifying shampoo and I love that one.
I'd love to hear about some other drugstore options. I've been using the Aveeno apple cider vinegar shampoo and have been loving it. I really don't think you need an expensive option like ouai, oribe, etc
I really love the format of your videos! I appreciate that providing extra clips of your mid-week + shower demos also adds time, but it completely sets you apart. I’ve watched a bunch of your videos in the last week since discovering your channel and have already seen benefits in my existing products by using your tips + am purchasing new products based on your recs. You’re doing such a great job! Also now adding the Ouai Detox Shampoo to cart, hehe. Really appreciate you and your efforts!
But Olaplex!!!! i’m dying to know how the new No.4C compares these, love u thanks for being so such a consistent source of reliable recommendations. they are always so worth it you’re the best xoxo
One thing I've taken to doing, to keep from having different sets of products for different times of year, is to mix 2/3 of a thicker shampoo with lots of moisturizing ingredients, with 1/3 of something like the Kristen Ess clarifying shampoo. Works a charm and allows me to use the same set of products year round!
I bought the Ouai awhile back at your suggestion and I’ve been loving it! I have hand tied extensions and try not to wash my hair too often so when I do I want something that will work really well!
Hello! Thank you for this video. Over the years I’ve wondered what the purpose of a clarifying shampoo was. I can’t remember who it was (I want to say you) who showed us the process of hair washing and they shampooed twice to make their days between shampoos last longer. I am 45 and never used that technique but I do now because it works for me, too. If we wash our hair like that, how often would be TOO often to use a clarifying shampoo?
Abbey have you ever considered going to a Japanese head spa? I would love to see a review by you if there is one in your area. Your videos are always so thoroughly researched and informative!
Have been using Ouai as my first cleanse and just ran out. Glad it’s still your number one pick. How do you use it? Do you use it every week? Do you still use the apple cider vinegar rinse?
I purchased Ouai detox shampoo based on your recommendation and THANK YOU!!! My scalp and hair has never felt so clean without feeling stripped and dried out! This stuff is amazing! I love your content. Thanks for the great information, and have a wonderful holiday month!
Thank you Abbey! You are one of my favourite haircare influencers. I am beyond impressed with your ability to educate and inspire me to do research. I have learnt sooo much, and really enjoy your videos.
My favorite for cleansing off dry shampoo and hairspray is the Neutrogena T-Sal therapeutic shampoo/scalp build up control that has 3% salicylic acid. It works well!
After watching your video on different shampoos for every concern, I decided to give the Kristen Ess clarifying shampoo. Love the clean feel after my wash. However, I usually wash my hair 1-2x a week. I’ve heard mixed advice with how often to use clarifying shampoos like this. How often would you recommend using it?
Typical advice is once every 3-5 typical washes. So if you wash your hair once a week, it'd be once a month. If you wash twice/three times a week, maybe every other week would suffice. Always start with slightly less and then move up if you feel like you need to.
I wish Ouai had an unscented version of the detox shampoo. I ordered it a while back due to your recommendation but as soon as I smelled it I had to return it. The scent just smelled awful to my nose🤷♀ I'm gonna give the Kristin Ess one a try next.
It’s super gross! I bought a huge bottle - used it once - had to reward my hair due to the overpowering stench. Into the drawer it went and I can’t bring myself to use it again. It also tangled up my hair and stripped the colour. The purology one in the green bottle is a lot better and has a very mild natural type smell - you might like that one
Until I started watching your channel, I never wanted to use a clarifying shampoo because I color my hair and thought it would strip the color. I haven't tried any of these five so think I"m going to start with ouai. Thanks, Abbey!
I just recently started using ouai and I noticed it was leaving my hair greasy but I also realized I bought a fine hair treatment and my hair is thick and coarse so maybe but the feel and smell is amazing
I have completely different hair than you do (curly, level 3, virgin)Virginia, but I still love all of your hair videos. Our skin is more alike than our hair, but your hair videos are my favorites to watch. Not sure why lol. Anyway your videos are great! Thanks for all the work and research you put into them.
I'm waiting to finish my current clarifying shampoo and then I'm getting the Ouai one. I wonder how it would/would not affect the colour if you have bleached/dyed hair?
I use this and have bleached hair and I love it. But TBH I wouldn’t use it on freshly toned hair, I feel like it would remove some of it since it’s clarifying.
Question: when you are reviewing Ouai you mention that the primary surfactant is C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, but the ingredients list Sodium Laureth Sulfate as the second ingredient, and a little further down Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Can you please explain this?
💛💛💛 I would love to see a showdown of shampoos that have sulfates but no silicones, oils, or proteins. I have hair that is protein sensitive and gets build up easily. The Pantene shampoo you recommended saved my hair and has made my hair grow so long. I only wash once a week but I use all your tips and do a second cleanse when shampooing. It would be nice to have more than one option to use besides the Pantene cause that one is perfect because it dosent strip my hair or put build up on my hair. Thankyou so much for all your videos💛💛💛
Have you looked at any of the micellar water shampoos that have been popping up recently? I’d love to hear if you think it’s a gimmick or actually worth it!
Would LOVE your take on the JVN Pre Wash Scalp Oil! Love your channel and feel completely blown away that I found you…I have learned SO much and your delivery is perfection! I hope your experiences in my home town of 60 years get better, I’ve lived in Chicago my entire life and I’ve loved it - I understand your last few years have been challenging to say the least and I feel honored that you have shared what you have with us all.
Completely off topic but could you please do a video on your face selftan routine and what products you recommend? Your tan always looks so flawless, natural and sunkissed!! I can’t ever manage to get it to look like this.. way more difficult than the tan on your body imo. Thank you in advance!
Love this video so much, as I struggle with very oily hair! Quick question - how does this fit in with your wash day routine (another AMAZING video)? Do you use the ACV rinse and then use one of these? Do you use one of these in place of the ACV rinse and then go in with a second shampoo? Do you just use this on certain wash days and not use the ACV rinse or the other types of shampoo? When I say “other” or “second” I mean those other shampoos you’ve shown like the Amika or the pureology. Would love your thoughts on this, as I’m still trying to nail down the shampoo part of my routine! Thanks so much and absolutely love your content! ❤️
I am totally perplexed by heat protection. If you put it on wet is it still working when hair is dry a d then you beat style. Like you put the Pureology 21 which has heat protection to 4?? Then you blow dry and curl will it still protect? Also a heat protection show down. I have very fine thin hair and need heat protection desperately but I don't want my hair left heavy and flat!
Glam Girl Gabby. She has a lot of content on thinning hair as she suffered and even had a transplant. FDA just approved, a week or 2 ago, a new treatment for alopecia.
Perfect video, was hoping you’d done a video on clarifying shampoos. Off to buy oribe and ouai. Love the hairdo you’re rocking today as well! I need to start using some of your hairdos instead of the snatched ponytail/bun all the time that is causing me way too much breakage.
Most of the time I use the detox clarifying shampoo by miche. I love it, it doesn’t make my hair feel stripped and my hair is shiny after using it. Another plus is it has ACV in it. Maybe try that one too?
Please review Redken Hair Cleansing Cream Clarifying shampoo - it has a ph level of 4.5-5.5 :) Also, I’d be interested in a review of Fekkai Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo (ph 4.6-5.2). Thanks, your channel is the best!
I really like this one. It does leave my scalp a little itchy, I think it’s the various fruit extracts. But it leaves my hair feeling so nice that I don’t mind.
I got the living Proof one and used it up but hated it, it was difficult to lather despite living in a soft water area. Are you going to be getting and reviewing the new Olaplex clarifying shampoo that it is coming out soon? I'm keen on that as I love Olaplex
I have the living proof detox shampoo and I’ve been using that for a little bit and I definitely like it but based on your reviews I think lll try out the ouai shampoo when I run out!
Thanks for sharing! I've been looking into clarifying shampoos over the weekend and wasn't sure what to go with so this helps so much! Do you by chance have any tips or specific videos that talk about dealing with dry hair and oily scalp? My hairdresser mentioned my hair being dry, despite my roots always getting oily quick
avoid "moisturizer" creamy shampoos and condition your mid- ends before you shampoo. conditioner will clean your hair as well unless you have lot of styling buildup then shampoo mids but avoid washing your mid to ends. and void conditioner above from scalp to mid mid. look for more "clear" looking shampoos.
@@musclemamacita721 thank you so much! i've been avoiding moisturizing shampoos for a while but wasn't sure if i should go back to it since she said my hair might be overproducing oils since my hair is dry. i'll try the conditioner before shampoo! and i always avoid conditioner on my roots/scalp. i'll look into some clearer shampoos. i went silicone+sulfate free for the "clean" hype but i might resort back to them if they can help!
The color wow says it doesn't leave residue behind, it doesn't say, it removes product residue and build up. There's a difference there.... the product description does not insinuate that its a clarifying shampoo in any way.
So.. if I only wash my hair once a week (with pureology hydrate sheer) when would I use a clarifying shampoo? Once a month in place of my normal shampoo?
I just bought the OUAI detox shampoo after watching your video. I’ve already tried living proof triple detox which I liked, but didn’t love the creamy texture.
Thank you so much for your great videos, Your comments on these products are precious, with no doubt, Quai is my first choice. Also, I am wondering if you can make a video on “rosemary oil & water” to see if it is overhyped or not? Thank you so much 🌹❤️
Dude I love this channel! I am in the market for a great clarifying shampoo and I have yet to discover a recommendation of yours that I didn’t fall in love with 😍 you make great content and that wouldn’t be made possible without the great input you get from your lovely audience and your dedication to listen to them. I am constantly going to your channel (especially for hair) to search your videos if you have already covered a category and Abbey always answers 😉 so thank you very much
Hi Abbey, I love watching you show! It has really helped me grow my hair out. I have very thick straight dry hair. Right now I'm using ACV apple cider hair rinse and the Amika the Kure line of products once a week. I'm thinking of changing to the Quai line for thick hair. Do you have any thoughts on that shampoo and conditioner? Thanks 😊
Hello, I came across your video because I am also in the market looking for which clarifying shampoo works. I wanted to ask, do you only use shampoo or do you follow up with conditioner as well? I know everyone is reviewing shampoo but I wanted to ask about conditioner or a hair mask if that’s needed as well
hi Abbey! I don't use clarifying shampoos cause I find I really don't need it. 😬 I hardly do much with my hair. lol. I just got home from work 2 hours ago. so glad to be home. my work week is over
Ladies…..I’ve tried all of these and, while some are good, you don’t need to spend this kind of money on a clarifying shampoo you only use periodically!! The Neutrogena Anti-Residue shampoo works just as well as any of these! I’ve been using it for 20 years!!
This video is over a year old and no one seems to have noticed that the ingredient lists for at least two of the shampoos are wrong. I am guessing there was a mixup because Abbey talks about Ouai having C14-16 olefin sulfonate while the ingredient list displayed has Sodium Laureth Sulfate as the primary surfactant and no C14-16 olefin sulfonate listed, however the ingredient list displayed for the Kristen Ess shampoo shows C14-16 olefin sulfonate and no SLS although Abbey talks about how some people might be concerned about the SLS in it.
Do you use that acv one at the same time as the clarifying Quai? I am trying to nail down a routine that removes build up but doesn't dry out my dry hair more. But I have thin hair that gets weight down easily. I tend to use the acv mid week in place of a shampoo. I wash 3 times a week. Once clarifying then avc.and then strength cure.
Thank you for this video. I've had some itching scalp recently and wondered about a clarifying shampoo. My hair and scalp are dry. For regular cleansing I rotate Pureology Strength Cure shampoo and conditioner (thank you again!) and Kerastase Resistance. Will try the Ouai product and maybe there will be a clarifying shampoo for dry hair one day.
I used purology cure strength too also the the ouai detox but ouai ended up drying out my scalp and gave me dandruff from dryness so just something to keep in mind - it could be too strong for your scalp.
Thank you, how often do you use the clarifying shampoos, or how often do you recommend? Thank you for great content. Would love a tour of your new apt. Also you mentioned doing a at home workout video, are you still doing it.
I’ve oily scalp and wash my hair 2 or 3x a week, my Moroccanoil shampoo doesn’t lather the way it should be due to the excess of oil, should I use the Ouai every wash day before my Moroccanoil ? Should I just the Ouai alone ? How are you using it ?! Thank you!
Hey Abbey I usually dont comment on videos but I just wanted to thank you for the great recommendations! I just picked up today based on your advice the ouai shampoo, and based on your other videos I got the Pureology strength shampoo and the Amika hair masks(yay sales hahaa). I absolutely love the hair masks and I can’t wait to try these shampoos as well!! Thank you and have a blessed New Year❤!!
Love your videos Abbey!!! So thoughtfully researched & created. On the clarifying. Is k-18 clarifying part of the round up and didn’t place top 5? Or if it wasn’t included in the race. Where would you rank it? Xx
Thank you so much for your videos, you save me a lot of time, money and experience to choose the right clarifying shampoos and hair care in general with so much out there to choose from! Great energy and great tutorials 💕🌺💕 keep them up!!
Hi Abbey, I wanted to try the Ouai shampoo but the ingredient list shows vinegar and its marketed to have apple cider vinegar. Big difference on the scalp and hair. Do you know of a salon brand that is fragrance free? Thanks!
I tend to have dry flaky scalp. Not oily at all. Which clarifying shampoo is best for my scalp type. Ouai?? Thanks for the review. I don't have oily hair ir scalp. Always dry and sometimes flakey. I want to clarify at least once per month.
hi abbey, I wash my hair everyday cuz I have really fine straight hair and it gets oily quick. If I use the ouai clarifying shampoo, do I use it everyday after my regular shampoo? Thank you!
QUESTION please… IF I use the OUAI detox shampoo in conjunction with the OLAPLEX No.3 & No.8 duo would I need to use the OUAI conditioner? Also another great informative video, thank you.

Kristen ess has been the best for my hair. I have ALOT OF HAIR, but thin strands. Been recently looking for clarifying and scalp helpers.
I’ve just started using Neutrogena clarifying shampoo with salicylic acid. Wow.
I don’t use a lot of styling products, but knowing how often I need to use chemical exfoliants on my face, I went with that one.

I would try some scalp messages and brushing to help the oil on your scalp to move down the hair shaft.
The color wow says it doesn't leave residue behind, it doesn't say, it removes product residue and build up. There's a difference there.... the product description does not insinuate that its a clarifying shampoo in any way.
You're right, she messed up on that one. It's just a no-residue daily shampoo. It's not a clarifying shampoo.
Will you do a video about how you color/bleach your hair? How often you normally go, what you ask for, etc. sorry if you’ve already addressed this! ❤️
Have you ever tried Amika’s clarifying shampoo, Reset? If so, any thoughts? I use it, but it’s the only clarifying shampoo I’ve ever used.
Thanks!
So.. if I only wash my hair once a week (with pureology hydrate sheer) when would I use a clarifying shampoo? Once a month in place of my normal shampoo?
UNITE is my favorite hair care brand! I don’t hear people talk about them enough! The weekender clarifying shampoo has helped my hair so much!
Thank you for the video! I need to pick up your recommendation. What lip gloss are you wearing? I love the shine!
for me color wow was the best cause the other clarifying shampoos feel way to drying and make my hair feel rough
Hated color wow shampoo! Love the Ouai. Crazy how products work so differently on each person
I got a sample of the Ouai one with a recent Sephora order & I LOVE it!! I plan on getting it in full size when my sample is gone!
Thank you so much 🌹❤️
How often do you use a clarifying shampoo and do you cleanse with it first or second cleanse?
Thank you for your videos! I’m learning so much!🥰
Dude I love this channel! I am in the market for a great clarifying shampoo and I have yet to discover a recommendation of yours that I didn’t fall in love with 😍 you make great content and that wouldn’t be made possible without the great input you get from your lovely audience and your dedication to listen to them. I am constantly going to your channel (especially for hair) to search your videos if you have already covered a category and Abbey always answers 😉 so thank you very much
Love this hair color. Is so natural. Less silver grey looking. Love it with your skin.
I love the ouai detox so much I can’t get myself to try anything else!
I’ve even converted my parents to using it 😂
Omg I love that 😂
I absolutely LOVE Ouai Detox! I also love Paul Mitchell Shampoo 3- I use once a month.
Thanks 😊
Hello,
I came across your video because I am also in the market looking for which clarifying shampoo works.
I’ve been using it for 20 years!!
but is she cruelty free ?
Neutrogena discontinued it!!!
@@thiroknanic7016 I have no clue. That is not something I look for in a product. 🤷♀️
@@Cold_Ethyl they sell it at my Vons for $7.99. Just bought last week!
Yes!! I forgot all about that one. It is great!
Have you tried the Redken cleansing cream shampoo. If so what’s your thoughts and opinions about the products?
It's supposed to be good, but it irritated my scalp so I returned it.
Started using the dphue acv and the ouai after abbey's advice and shampooing twice absolutely love them both
Do you use that acv one at the same time as the clarifying Quai?
I love your videos! I'd love to know how you research both your hair and skincare products
Thank you, how often do you use the clarifying shampoos, or how often do you recommend? Thank you for great content. Would love a tour of your new apt. Also you mentioned doing a at home workout video, are you still doing it.
Please do a summer haircare video! I'm looking for a long time for some hair sun protection spray for on thr go, but they're too oily :(
Already have one! 🤍
Thank you!
Can you review kinky curly come clean and the redken cleansing cream shampoo? I love those two clarifying shampoos.
Thanks!
I have been meaning to try Ouai, will for sure buy it next.
Have you tried The Necessaire, I am curious to know how that brand compares to Ouai ?
Cannot wait for your K18 shampoos reviews !
You should try davines "solu" and Christophe Robin the sea salt scrub... Both are great! My 2 faves
Can you use clarifying shampoo if you dye your hair? Thanks in advance
I would love to know what you think of Harklinikken Balancing Shampoo in this category! And also their serum. It has helped me with hair thinning.
Thank you!
Will clarifying shampoo mess with my brown dyed hair ? Like as far as color longevity
Just tried ouai shampoo. So many flakes came up. I will be buying the big bottle. Omg
Are they all color safe?
how often do you use a detox/clarifying shampoo like this?
QUESTION please…
IF I use the OUAI detox shampoo in conjunction with the OLAPLEX No.3 & No.8 duo would I need to use the OUAI conditioner?
Also another great informative video, thank you.
