  • Hurricane Helene hit the U.S. this weekend and absolutely decimated the Southeast, especially rural parts of Appalachia. As usual, our government is no help. Let's talk about it.

My dad lived in a trailer in Black Mountain and lost the trailer, vehicles, a camper, even my mother's ashes. He's 80 years old. His elderly girlfriend lived in Old Fort and lost everything, too. They're in a motel in Hickory now because I live in Morganton and still don't have power, possibly until this weekend, we hope. Besides all this, my family got out lucky because we're all alive. So many others are lost and missing. Please keep our area in your prayers. Life for us has changed forever 💔 #WNCStrong

We used to drive through Black Mountain and Old Fort all the time on visits to my grandparents until we moved them down to live with us in SC in 2018 (which just happened to be in the middle of Hurricane Florence). They lived in the North Cove area up above Marion, my granddad was a forklift driver at the Baxter facility there, and one of their old neighbors who still lives up there reported all three bridges into that area were taken out, with the only way out being by helicopter or, if you had a light vehicle like an ATV or side-by-side, they had some planks over the river you could drive over. The guy's son, who lives in my grandparents' old house, had his brand new truck crushed by a tree that fell on the carport.

The NHC told the governor to get them out. They ran the storm surge models. I hold your Governor 100% accountable for every single last loss of life up there because he did not appropriately evacuate people.

There was an area right by my sisters home that was badly flooded to the point that the bridge over the river was covered by the high waters and looked like it basically disappeared. I don't know if you've been to Narrows VA but we were driving during this disaster and we saw where the campgrounds were completely underwater and people were having to be rescued. I'm not sure if they tried to stay in the campers or they tried to return to the campers. We were originally trying to get to North Carolina but we had to call that off. We returned home to find the water didn't reach our house but our power just got cut on today.

As a Boone resident, the counties around us are far worse. We got it bad, but we have multiple private entities that are mobilized and working, including App State university.Counties west and south of us that are sandwiched between the north and south toe river have reports of missing individuals up in the 300 hundreds. Trailer parks and low income I was disapointed have be wiped off the mountain side. There are places that are only accessible by helicopter. Elders are being boated out of residents and placed in hospitals and nursing homes just so they can receive the care they need. I k ow friends at ETSU that are tagging and identifying bodies pulled from the river. The national guard has just now(as of tueday) has set up mobile morges for this area. Mudslides have also taken multiple homes and lives. Most people have no power, no water, and some had to hike to the top of the mountains to survive Friday night. When I found out that we gave other countries more our citizens, I was disappointed. Canada has sent more than the federal government.

They too had no way of knowing if their family was alive and quickly had to organize with their neighbors and local agencies to get things done while the Governor was wasting people’s time. Sucks. My brother in law lost his house, other friend’s street turned into a sink hole, parks flooded. Neighbors have been helping neighbors. Departments are coming from other cities/states to help all around. So thankful for the incredible people coming here and helping, the first responders, and the linemen. I live just across the river from Greenville County. We lost power at 7-something Friday morning and got it back a little after 9:00 AM Monday. I heard it was a Michigan line crew that got us up and running on our street, and it was just in the nick of time because I think we used all of the portable oxygen tanks we had for my grandmother who has COPD, and we were about to have to call 911 or get her to a shelter just so she could have her oxygen. That was our main concern.
Also, Easley is overcrowded at the best of times, so imagine what it was like when it was one of the only places around with power. It took me 2 hours to make a food run to Hardee's the other night.

Afterwards once gas stations got power, the wait was nearly an hour to get an open pump. People filling entire buggies (shopping carts) with groceries and just walking out once stores opened. We are thankful it wasnt worse for us here in the Upstate and it definitely could have been. I have family in South Carolina who were already down to eating one meal a day on Saturday. My papa down here in Georgia, where the power in the entire county was out and there was nowhere to get meals or gas, dropped everything to take a generator up to them on unsafe roads where trees and powerlines were down and red lights were not functioning. And we are all doing much better than untold numbers of people. Hearing that FEMA doesn’t work on the weekends is genuinely one of the most enraging things I have ever heard. People needed aid this weekend. They could have stood to sacrifice a couple of days off when they are in the privileged position to have power, water, food, a standing home and a job that hasn’t been lost to disaster. Oh My God.

Hi Brett, Thank you for bringing much needed attention to the devastation left behind by Helene. I live in Statesville, NC. We were on the very edge of the hurricane and only suffered very minor damage, but it was a scary storm to witness nonetheless. Our local airport has been accepting and delivering donations for all of the Western NC towns affected by this disaster. Many people are helping by using their own private helicopters as well. Every day dozens of planes and helicopters fly over my neighborhood. I say a silent prayer for each one. I pray that God guides them to the people in most need as well as for their safety. So many people have witnessed unimaginable tragedies. The traumatic experiences are something that will haunt many people forever. My next door neighbors are a father and son duo who have been repairing electrical lines in places like Taylorsville, Love Valley, and Wilkes County. They have said the devastation in the foothills is horrible. The entire situation is heartbreaking to say the least, but the goodness of every day people has truly been a beacon of hope.❤ ❤❤

We are under boil advisories and water conservation restrictions here as of 1 hour ago. As a military veteran family, we are doing everything we possibly can regardless to raise funds to buy essentials and supplies to ship out to all the affected regions. Coworkers we knew were assisting local law enforcement in ID’ing bodies washed up in Erwin, TN (Unicoi Co.) once the flood waters receded. I’m from NC, born & raised. My family goes back many many MANY generations here. I am proud to say I’m from NC for so many reasons. Seeing everyone across the state come together so quickly and giving resources so generously is the number one reason. People are grabbing anything they can in their homes to give. People are giving money they don’t necessarily have just to help a neighbor across the state that they’ve never met. Western NC is a home away from home for a lot of us, and we will build it back the best way we know how.
ALSO- Samaritans purse is such a great organization. I’ve volunteered through them in different capacities several times over the years. They are AMAZING! Truly!!

I’m an hour west of Asheville, Brett. It was really bad. The media usually over exaggerates and blows things way out of proportion but this time they really hit the nail on the head. It was so jarring to see such a familiar city, somewhere I go all the time to eat and shop, underwater and completely decimated. It’s surreal, actually. This isn’t something that EVER happens in the mountains. This is something you see on the news in places like Florida or Louisiana during Katrina. We were truly not prepared for this. Who expects the mountains to be hit by hurricane level winds and torrential rain and flooding? There was no preparing for something like this.
I’m in a town called Cherokee. We got hit with flooding and high winds and one of our more remote areas got flooded and shut down for a day but it was a trickle compared to Asheville, Boone, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure and TN, GA. We didn’t have cell service for about 3 days and gas was low as well as cash only for restaurants and grocery stores but that was the worst of it for my family because my mom and dad already have Starlink so we at least had WiFi. We finally have cell service again after 3 1/2 days.
We attempted to go see my sister in WV a few days after and we got as far as TN before we hit traffic and discovered that the interstate bridge in Erwin, TN had been destroyed and the alternate route was also closed. It’s literally been like a disaster movie. Not to make light of the situation, but that’s the only way I can think to describe what has happened and what I’ve seen because it’s literally been surreal. It’s a historic disaster for our area and we need all the help we can get. Thank you for covering this story, Brett.

These people do not have the same amount of security or financial support as other parts of the country, and this is going to take a huge toll on people and some may not be able to recover fast enough.
