  • Before everybody goes full nuclear, yes there are other arguably better ways to do this. Yes, I can use a sine bar - I don't have one. Yes, you can use an indicator and do the trig with the handwheels of the lathe - that's too much for my brain to compute. Yes, you can do it with two indicators - I only have one because poor. So keep in mind this is just one way which worked for me which required a minimum amount of tools which delivers an accurate result. Would you do this in a professional machine shop - I don't know, I've never worked in one nor am I a professional machinist. I am just trying to figure it out as I go. I am not a machining services professional, this is not machining advice.

Thank you. This is amazingly simple (once you build the tool) and a very tangible method for those of us who are trig deficient -as I hang my head in shame.
    Best regards.

Instead of measuring from tip to tip, consider measuring rod to rod outside distance, then subtracting the rod diameter from the measured distance... Or conversely you can measure the inside distance from rod to rod and add the bar diameter to get the center line to centerline distance... I think you will get a more precise value doing it this way... And it's free... I like your set up, and I may make one like it.

Thought about doing that too. You're probably right if you use mics for everything it should be more accurate than trying to hit the tips with a caliper. Will do that next time I use it!
