Thanks doc, I had a heart attack last January while I was in the Philippines and diagnosed severe mitral regurgitation, this July ( I am now in Illinois) I had stress echo and echocardiogram and Praise God results normal and now mild regurgitation, I follow strict low salt diet, less sugar, more vegetables and fruits. I watch your videos, very helpful, more power to you doc.
If I would have known that I could have avoided my stroke. I followed a stupid LCHF diet with lots of animal products and it almost killed me. I curse those who fool others with that shit - including me. Now for me, animal products are close to zero and I eat almost only whole plant foods and it really really saved my life!!!
John Snow Same for me mate. I just had an heart attack and i am on LCHF diet like you were. Trouble is i have Type 2 Diabetes as well so i have to avoid simple sugars which will spike insulin. So i'm in a double dilemma here. I need to avoid sugars but i need to avoid saturated fats as well. What i think i will do, i will adopt a modified ketogenic diet (because i still need to fence off diabetes) where i will consume animal fats to a bare minimum, and eat fish in its place instead, (because i still need to fence off saturated fats, i.e. heart attacks) I will look like an Eskimo soon, hahaha but i hope it will prevent me from dropping dead from either of the two. @@sergiodario58able That's exactly my predicament as well. I find that lean protein, low monounsaturated fat, fruits, veggies, and complex carbs work the best. I tried both the keto and the carnivore diet with disastrous results.
My favourite diet is the South Beach Diet. It is very similar to the Mediterranean Diet and is broken down into three Phases which makes it easier to follow. It was invented by a Cardiologist who had the heart in mind.
Are you saying that during this test, a Mediterranean diet actually replaced the normal post stent medication? The reason I ask is because following my heart attack/stenting in April 2019, I have had stomach problems as a side effect of the statins, blood thinners, beta-blockers and PPIs prescribed. These symptoms have been getting steadily worse.
Same with me 18 months ago. I'm mostly in the Med diet, supplimented with Mg, D3, Zn and CLO. Came off the meds, took a blood test and,,,,,,, Didn't reduce my cholesterol by much, but feel better, especially my guts on the plant diet. I still have significant pain from the statins. 100% effective, but not very safe.
This is such great information Doctor but I’ve always been just a tad confused with questions regarding different scenarios for people. What I mean is how can a Mediterranean lifestyle/diet be beneficial for people with type II diabetes? It seems it wouldn’t due to the amount of carbs one would need to eat. The person would not be able to rid themselves of all that excess glucose. Second reason is people who metabolize carbohydrates at a slower rate will seem to also struggle with this kind of lifestyle. I’m not denying the extreme benefits on this lifestyle. I’m more just a bit confused on how it can be helpful for certain populations.

I don’t eat grains except very infrequently brown rice, eat very little sugar (for fruit I like blueberries and mangos),, lots of fish, grass fed lean meat, free range chicken, only dairy is Greek yoghurt. Use rice bran oil. I cook mostly Asian, Middle Eastern and Indian dishe. TONS of onions, garlic and hot peppers. 1 cup of organic coffee a day, otherwise only organic Yerba mate or herbal tea, no soda. At 67 I’ve lost over 100 pounds in 4 years, BP is 120/70, I take no meds, only supplement is sublingual B12.
This information Dr.Gupta is beneficial as I think it extremely helpful. I will take note as it is a good preventative measures!!! I have not had a heart attack but have lost four sisters to this. I do not eat red meat. Sounds really good to eat a Mediterranean diet. I value all what you do. I cannot praise you enough. I was recommended statins but refused . My sister takes them. Same here. I take a beta blocker plus blood thinner and 5 mgs. of Lisinopril for blood pressure. But I absolutely Refuse to take Statins. There's just too much evidence of the potential harm they can cause!!

I have been following the Mediterranean diet. I have high bp, cholesterol, but have not had a heart attack (tg). I think it's easy to follow (following more the pyramid vs trying to eat foods based in the mediterreanean--for instance, I might make tacos with veggies like corn and zuchini and then have bean salsa as my protein source). I feel the food is potentially terrific tasting. My bp hasn't really gone down though but arthritis in my hands has disappeared. I'm 73.
Go animal free including Dairy and Oil free, sugar free and very very low salt. Go high on veggies and fruits. You will see amazing results within months.
Thank you Doctor. I just had a CABGx5. I was down to about 5% on one artery. I was keeping a healthy med diet for years, but then tried the KETO style diet. Big mistake, since I had no med insurance. But luckily was old enough to get Medicare and Medical - so I had the procedure done..... elective surgery basically. I also had three atherectomies done on each of three arteries just beyond the grafts. I also had a Left atrial appendage closure (also known as LAAC or LAA closure) performed on me. So I am now a biological-cyborg, with oxygen flow to my brain increased from about 1-10% in my LAD (the other artery was completely blocked) to about 90 percent flow - I estimate that the veins that were harvested have a lesser diameter than the original arteries. Hence, 90% flow, and not 100% flow.

Dr Gupta , do you like fish oil to lower LDL, if yes how much fish oil. Have not had a heart attack. I do have diabetes type 2 under good control. Cholesterol yesterday was 167 mg/dL, LDL 120 mg/dL, HDL 47 mg/dL, Triglycerides 66 mg/dL, blood sugar 104 mg/dL. Blood pressure 134/84 with Edarbi 40& Amlodipine 5 mg. Thank you for your thoughts.
Aren't most heart attack victims insulin resistant to some extent? Metabolic syndrome is also quite often present. Keto diet is suggested by some that see diabetes as common ground for people suffering heart disease .
What's confusing to me is that when I review the AHA step one diet it reads identical to the Mediterranean diet. The only difference I see is throwing in a bunch of olive oil on the Med diet. So, why would there be such a big difference in outcome?

Israel is made up mostly from immigrants from the US and Europe. So I don't think Israeli people really are on Mediterranean diets. Look on the other hand the Sardinians. They are some of the healthiest people in the world and have traditionally Mediterranean diet

That's really interesting as a Cocktail of drugs are pushed on people to take and these may be needed but personally if I can get well through food and exercise I would much prefer that. Aspirin is starting to be recommended for older people who have not even had a heart attack to thin the blood. Statins work but get mixed reviews as to side effects. Blood Pressure tablets I am unsure on. Another drug is given to help rejection or the furring up of the stent implant for a 12 month period so seems really important. A Beta Blocker to ease and slow heart rate but what if your heart rate is low because you exercise and strength the muscle of your heart. Of course some of the answers to this probably depend on what condition your heart was in after your heart attack.
Hello Paul I'm Sergio from UK i'm just in bed recovering from a heart attack i had 3 days ago. Everything you said in your post, applies to me, in regards to the medications i was given, and my heart conditions. I am otherwise fit, i go to the gym, my heart is strong, my pulse is strong, but due to my Familial Hypercholesterolemia, (i.e inhereted high cholesterol) i have fucked up arteries which led to my heart attack. I do Keto diet to fence off type 2 diabetes for which i was diagnosed 18 months ago, but i have now reversed. Trouble is Keto diet is high in saturated fats, which conflict with a good heart health. So i am in an serious enigma here. Am i to drop dead through diabetes, i.e.high carbs suggested in a mediterranian diet by doctors for my recovery? Or am i to drop dead by a second heart attack to the high fats in the Keto diet which i need to eat in order to keep diabetes at bay? Or could there be a diet that conciles the both conditions, and is going to keep me alive, i hope? Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated. Regards Sergio
@@sergiodario58able Hi Sergio, That is a very good question and something I asked myself. I am no Cardiologist but my understanding is that the lining of the artery becomes damaged and then the cholesterol goes to that place and causes the blockage so the question is what causes the damage to the artery in the first place? Also we are all individuals. I took my medication for 5 months but also went Vegan at the same time. At the end of 5 months I had lost 2 stone and then stopped my medication except for the Dual Platelet Therapy which stops the stents from furring up. This is only for 12months so in 2 months I stop this also and will be completely drug free. The Statins were damaging my Liver. When I stopped the Statins my Liver became healthy again and also the Vegan diet had many good health benefits for my body. It cleanse my system. I did 2 months Cardio rehab to get some confidence back and then continued to exercise along with the diet. At 66 years old, today I ran a 5km in under 26 mins. It has all taken me 10 months so far. Regarding your question on Keto and Fats. I believe it is the saturated fats that are bad for a person. I did not do Keto. I went Vegan, cut my calorie intake, cut my carbs down. Cut my sugar down as much as possible except for natural fruit. Diet is a big subject. I advise you to look on You Tube for Dr Esselystein, Dr Ekberg and Dr Berg.Esselystein recommends Vegan and no Fats. Dr Berg recommends Keto. You will have to do your homework. I am happy to say I am in the best shape I have been in for 10years now. Last comment: If my scores BP,Cholesterol etch had not been good after leaving medication I would have had to reconsider my decision to not take them. Goodluck in whatever you do but good nutrition and exercise are key to a healthy body.

I'm 29 and had an afib attack the other morning. I went to the hospital and they decided it would be best to do a cardioversion to get my rhythm back. How dangerous is this? Did I weaken my heart?
I recommend watching the Doc's video titled 'I don't think Afib causes strokes' or something like that - he explains how afib alone isn't necessarily a risk for stroke alone, just that a lot of people with afib are older and with other conditions (the other condition part being very important) so the statistics are high.
I love your lectures, but having lived in Spain for over 10 years, I can tell you that they eat tons of serano ham, which is very salty as well as pork in their paella. So they do eat stuff which we think of is bad. Only yesterday I read the omega 3 has no impact on heart health. Longitudinal study with over 100,000 subjects. So we are more and more confused with nutritional studies. Another thing is that many, many people in Spain take is ativans almost as aspirin to lessen stress before BP medications are prescribed. Lastly, we need to look who is funding any of the research we are hearing about.
Angie Stones PhD wow I found that my blood pressure is directly related to stress and can swing wildly. I went to hospital with high blood pressure. I wasn’t responding to their medications and I asked for an anti anxiety benzo. The Dr was reluctant but decided to try. My blood pressure dropped 40 points pretty quickly and I was allowed to leave the hospital. From my understanding benzos were used to treat high blood pressure in America before blood pressure medications were produced. The French have the lowest heart attacks in the world and live nearly as long as Japanese. Swiss right behind Japanese also. So a diet high in fat does not appear to give heart attacks. Oh and the drugs that are pushed are the newer drugs that can have greater profit than older drugs.
It really depends of the causes of HBP. If it is due to kidney function or some other physical issue, anxiety meds won't help. But if it is, I would propose that it is better to take anti anxiety medication than BP medication which may alter other physiological function. I wonder what Sanjey thinks. I am not sure if there is current literature on this but will look around.
Are you sure you read that Omega 3 was not impactful? I read that Omega 3 supplements are ineffective? I believe that Omega 3 from natural sources particularly fatty fish is very effective.
Barry Sharp yes I read that too. I try to concentrate on latest med finding but being a scientist myself intake everything with a pinch of salt. :) I know how science changes, so best is to use common sense. We are not all the sane.
@Thordur Hogna Excuse me, but as a Mediterranean habitat of many generations I would like to point out that there is no such thing as whole wheat in our diets. On the contrary it is considered almost poisonous from the elderly. They wouldn't even feed the animals with it. The shell of the wheat was thoroughly sifted since ancient Greece and Rome. Whole wheat is such a new thing for us also. Also, Mediterranean diet is not one way. Everybody think they know it but even the countries around the Mediterranean are so different that we hardly recognise each others foods as of the same diet. They are all delicious by the way!
@Thordur Hogna Honestly, nowone from the elderly in my family or friends of them ever gave me a scientific explanation over this cause they were just farmers. But they don't eat it and i kinda trust them since they are all above 90 years old.

Although I appreciate your videos usually very much, I believe you're too much moving out on thin ice when you speak about diet in relation to (heart) disease. There is a ton of solid scientific evidence which correlates specific nutritional components to a variety of chronic illnesses and any talk about nutrition and (heart) disease should be based on this, instead of one or two papers. Several names to remember are a.o.: Drs. Caldwell B. Esselstyn (a.o. Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease", 2008), T. Colin Campbell (o.a. "The China Study", 2016), Dean Ornish, Neal Barnard, John A. McDougall, Joel Fuhrman, Pam Popper, Michael Greger (a.o. "How Not to Die, 2016) ... It is also advised (in general) that cardiologists routinely read the Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
So if you change your diet you don't need a statin. Which means you won't get all the side effects from a statin, and gain all the benefits from the diet... It's a no brainer.

Keto should not be followed by healthy people, and there must be medical supervision. If you want to get rid of fat or cellulite then definitely try the Agoge diet, it worked wonders for me...
I think doctors are afraid to recommend a vegan diet because it is considered too radical for most people. Granted, the so called Mediterranean diet is a step in the right direction, and in itself is radical enough, for say, most Americans who are used to lots of fried and processed meats. I can almost guarantee any American switching to a Mediterranean diet is going to go heavy on the meat and fish and probably eat leafy salads with dressings and think they are adhering to the diet. Bite the bullet and just recommend a vegan diet rich in dark leafy greens and whole fruits, beans, legumes, tempeh, etc. Remember to get 2500 micrograms of B12 a week and get your blood work done to check on your general health.
Plant-based. Language is deceptive. The studies showed that people should reduce meat consumption, not that they "should eat" small amounts of meat. In other words, best is to reduce meat consumption to zero or close to it. Dr. Michael Greger is an M.D. who is a nutrition expert.
Great video, but the variables of health and preconditions are too varied to place any real positive outcome on a diet. Who's to say these people wouldn't have died regardless of diet and who's to say the diet prevented people from dying. I think this is far to vague to place any trust in at all.
Why wouldent you just recomend a plant based diet should be even better when you eliminate all LDL colesterol and most saturated fats that is high in all dairy products like cheese, milk, meats etc, and also pure fat like olive oil dosent seem like somthing our bodys are made to consume ?
Keep that attitude and you're definitely heading towards critical coronary care unit, if you're not happy with him, just turn it off, maybe after heart attack less stress and more patience.

Dr Gupta , do you like fish oil to lower LDL, if yes how much fish oil. Have not had a heart attack. I do have diabetes type 2 under good control. Cholesterol yesterday was 167 mg/dL, LDL 120 mg/dL, HDL 47 mg/dL, Triglycerides 66 mg/dL, blood sugar 104 mg/dL. Blood pressure 134/84 with Edarbi 40& Amlodipine 5 mg. Thank you for your thoughts.

Aren't most heart attack victims insulin resistant to some extent? Metabolic syndrome is also quite often present. Keto diet is suggested by some that see diabetes as common ground for people suffering heart disease .

What's confusing to me is that when I review the AHA step one diet it reads identical to the Mediterranean diet. The only difference I see is throwing in a bunch of olive oil on the Med diet. So, why would there be such a big difference in outcome?

Israel is made up mostly from immigrants from the US and Europe. So I don't think Israeli people really are on Mediterranean diets. Look on the other hand the Sardinians. They are some of the healthiest people in the world and have traditionally Mediterranean diet

That's really interesting as a Cocktail of drugs are pushed on people to take and these may be needed but personally if I can get well through food and exercise I would much prefer that. Aspirin is starting to be recommended for older people who have not even had a heart attack to thin the blood. Statins work but get mixed reviews as to side effects. Blood Pressure tablets I am unsure on. Another drug is given to help rejection or the furring up of the stent implant for a 12 month period so seems really important. A Beta Blocker to ease and slow heart rate but what if your heart rate is low because you exercise and strength the muscle of your heart. Of course some of the answers to this probably depend on what condition your heart was in after your heart attack.

I'm Sergio from UK i'm just in bed recovering from a heart attack i had 3 days ago.
Everything you said in your post, applies to me, in regards to the medications i was given, and my heart conditions. I am otherwise fit, i go to the gym, my heart is strong, my pulse is strong, but due to my Familial Hypercholesterolemia, (i.e inhereted high cholesterol) i have fucked up arteries which led to my heart attack. I do Keto diet to fence off type 2 diabetes for which i was diagnosed 18 months ago, but i have now reversed. Trouble is Keto diet is high in saturated fats, which conflict with a good heart health. So i am in an serious enigma here. Am i to drop dead through diabetes, i.e.high carbs suggested in a mediterranian diet by doctors for my recovery? Or am i to drop dead by a second heart attack to the high fats in the Keto diet which i need to eat in order to keep diabetes at bay? Or could there be a diet that conciles the both conditions, and is going to keep me alive, i hope?
Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.

@@sergiodario58able Hi Sergio, That is a very good question and something I asked myself. I am no Cardiologist but my understanding is that the lining of the artery becomes damaged and then the cholesterol goes to that place and causes the blockage so the question is what causes the damage to the artery in the first place? Also we are all individuals. I took my medication for 5 months but also went Vegan at the same time. At the end of 5 months I had lost 2 stone and then stopped my medication except for the Dual Platelet Therapy which stops the stents from furring up. This is only for 12months so in 2 months I stop this also and will be completely drug free. The Statins were damaging my Liver. When I stopped the Statins my Liver became healthy again and also the Vegan diet had many good health benefits for my body. It cleanse my system. I did 2 months Cardio rehab to get some confidence back and then continued to exercise along with the diet. At 66 years old, today I ran a 5km in under 26 mins. It has all taken me 10 months so far. Regarding your question on Keto and Fats. I believe it is the saturated fats that are bad for a person. I did not do Keto. I went Vegan, cut my calorie intake, cut my carbs down. Cut my sugar down as much as possible except for natural fruit. Diet is a big subject. I advise you to look on You Tube for Dr Esselystein, Dr Ekberg and Dr Berg.Esselystein recommends Vegan and no Fats. Dr Berg recommends Keto. You will have to do your homework. I am happy to say I am in the best shape I have been in for 10years now. Last comment: If my scores BP,Cholesterol etch had not been good after leaving medication I would have had to reconsider my decision to not take them. Goodluck in whatever you do but good nutrition and exercise are key to a healthy body.

Mediterranean is high in omega 6 due to olive oil. People that have Med diet also have more sunlight.
Actually olive oil is low in omega 6 but high in monounsaturated fat.

I'm 29 and had an afib attack the other morning. I went to the hospital and they decided it would be best to do a cardioversion to get my rhythm back. How dangerous is this? Did I weaken my heart?
I recommend watching the Doc's video titled 'I don't think Afib causes strokes' or something like that - he explains how afib alone isn't necessarily a risk for stroke alone, just that a lot of people with afib are older and with other conditions (the other condition part being very important) so the statistics are high.
I love your lectures, but having lived in Spain for over 10 years, I can tell you that they eat tons of serano ham, which is very salty as well as pork in their paella. So they do eat stuff which we think of is bad. Only yesterday I read the omega 3 has no impact on heart health. Longitudinal study with over 100,000 subjects. So we are more and more confused with nutritional studies. Another thing is that many, many people in Spain take is ativans almost as aspirin to lessen stress before BP medications are prescribed. Lastly, we need to look who is funding any of the research we are hearing about.
Angie Stones PhD wow I found that my blood pressure is directly related to stress and can swing wildly. I went to hospital with high blood pressure. I wasn’t responding to their medications and I asked for an anti anxiety benzo. The Dr was reluctant but decided to try. My blood pressure dropped 40 points pretty quickly and I was allowed to leave the hospital. From my understanding benzos were used to treat high blood pressure in America before blood pressure medications were produced. The French have the lowest heart attacks in the world and live nearly as long as Japanese. Swiss right behind Japanese also. So a diet high in fat does not appear to give heart attacks. Oh and the drugs that are pushed are the newer drugs that can have greater profit than older drugs.
It really depends of the causes of HBP. If it is due to kidney function or some other physical issue, anxiety meds won't help. But if it is, I would propose that it is better to take anti anxiety medication than BP medication which may alter other physiological function. I wonder what Sanjey thinks. I am not sure if there is current literature on this but will look around.

Are you sure you read that Omega 3 was not impactful? I read that Omega 3 supplements are ineffective? I believe that Omega 3 from natural sources particularly fatty fish is very effective.
Barry Sharp yes I read that too. I try to concentrate on latest med finding but being a scientist myself intake everything with a pinch of salt. :) I know how science changes, so best is to use common sense. We are not all the sane.

@Thordur Hogna Excuse me, but as a Mediterranean habitat of many generations I would like to point out that there is no such thing as whole wheat in our diets. On the contrary it is considered almost poisonous from the elderly. They wouldn't even feed the animals with it. The shell of the wheat was thoroughly sifted since ancient Greece and Rome. Whole wheat is such a new thing for us also. Also, Mediterranean diet is not one way. Everybody think they know it but even the countries around the Mediterranean are so different that we hardly recognise each others foods as of the same diet. They are all delicious by the way!
@Thordur Hogna Honestly, nowone from the elderly in my family or friends of them ever gave me a scientific explanation over this cause they were just farmers. But they don't eat it and i kinda trust them since they are all above 90 years old.
@Thordur Hogna İ know there are contradictions about that matter and İ think there are a lot more about their lifestyles that contributed in their long-living. Unfortunately, I started much later in life discovering them. I'm sure everyone has similar examples like ours to look up to.

Although I appreciate your videos usually very much, I believe you're too much moving out on thin ice when you speak about diet in relation to (heart) disease. There is a ton of solid scientific evidence which correlates specific nutritional components to a variety of chronic illnesses and any talk about nutrition and (heart) disease should be based on this, instead of one or two papers.

It is also advised (in general) that cardiologists routinely read the Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

I think doctors are afraid to recommend a vegan diet because it is considered too radical for most people. Granted, the so called Mediterranean diet is a step in the right direction, and in itself is radical enough, for say, most Americans who are used to lots of fried and processed meats. I can almost guarantee any American switching to a Mediterranean diet is going to go heavy on the meat
and fish and probably eat leafy salads with dressings and think they are adhering to the diet. Bite the bullet and just recommend a vegan diet rich in dark leafy greens and whole fruits, beans, legumes, tempeh, etc. Remember to get 2500 micrograms of B12 a week and get your blood work done to check on your general health.

Great video, but the variables of health and preconditions are too varied to place any real positive outcome on a diet. Who's to say these people wouldn't have died regardless of diet and who's to say the diet prevented people from dying. I think this is far to vague to place any trust in at all.
Why wouldent you just recomend a plant based diet should be even better when you eliminate all LDL colesterol and most saturated fats that is high in all dairy products like cheese, milk, meats etc, and also pure fat like olive oil dosent seem like somthing our bodys are made to consume ?

Keep that attitude and you're definitely heading towards critical coronary care unit, if you're not happy with him, just turn it off, maybe after heart attack less stress and more patience.
