I am a Stage IV Cancer patient and a massive heart attack survivor, and I can tell you, every little pain causes anxiety. It is a constant battle, not letting anxiety get the best of you. Unfortunately, living in America, Cardiac Anxiety is an incredibly expensive condition . My last bill was $39,000. I am told not to ignore my chest pain, yet, the bills can't keep coming in. The “cure” that worked for me and stopped me from taking my pulse umpteen times a day and waking up with panic attacks, was another health “scare” that appeared on my horizon which was potentially far more life-threatening. This time the anxiety was perfectly legitimate. I then forgot all about my cardiac anxiety and, strangely, the fear facing a real health danger was of another nature than the hysteria and panic attacks caused by palpitations. There was a certain fatalism, acceptance and generally a more philosophical stance. Ultimately, the real scare turned out to be unfounded when results cleared the issue. At that point, I was so exhausted and fed up with health anxiety that I decided not to spoil my life any further. I decided not to worry about the inevitable: Death - the one certainty in life - and to enjoy every minute I felt well and healthy. Thank you and your guest for your insightful and much-needed presentation.

I discovered I has sick sinus syndrome seven years ago and soon after, was implanted with a pacemaker at 49. The amount of health/cardiac anxiety that followed for the next five+ years was just as bad as the arrhythmia. Everything changes. Weird beats, PVCs, PACs, generally feeling …different. I am sooooo glad your talking about this . I have had AFIB for about 13 years. And AFIB and anxiety are partners in crime. I’ve had 4 ablations over the years and can completely relate to this video. I even understand why and how it happens. But it is still hard to control. But I am starting to conquer it. 🙂. In no way is it easy. So far I put my phone away. Far to easy to getting obsessed with looking things up. And that just creates more anxiety. Once in a while something will make you feel comfortable. ( like your videos ). I stop checking my heart rate 20 times a day. Stop taking my blood pressure every day . And I don’t want a Fitbit because I would end up getting obsessed with it as well I try not to think about it. I remind myself that everyone gets a missed beat or an extra beat. And it is normal. Once in awhile. But don’t ignore what your doctor has to say. I am in great shape for 56 years old. Nothing wrong. Had a very successful ablation last time. And I have no other health issues. But still have to fight off that damn health / cardiac anxiety. But Iam learning. 👍. Believe you’re healthy. Don’t Google everything that comes across your mind and try to keep your mind busy on other things. Overthinking can be a bad thing. Meditation works very good as well when done right. Keeps you from thinking about yesterday or tomorrow. It’s bad enough thinking negatively from within yourself and all the negative stuff that’s going on out in the world . it creates a lot of stress .. stress can create heart, arrhythmias, and other health issues. And there is so much fear being sold to us on the Internet, the television it’s hard to stay stress-free. And those kind of things can definitely cause cardiac and health anxiety. Sorry. Talk to much. Lol. Got excited about this video. I only got halfway through it and wrote this comment. Lol. I will now finish listen. 👍. You got some really great videos. I’ve watched for years now. 🙂. Thanks you for that. A quick quote I heard many years ago …. the body is always listening to what the mind is thinking … and it makes so much sense.

So. I complained to my doctor for YEARS about waking up with a weird flutter8ng in my chest and a feeling of panic.
Finally one day..I had a heart attack. But then they decided it wasn’t a heart. But they did send me for a nuclear perfusion stress test, about 25 days later.
That test confirmed that the anterior hesrt was not getting blood flow.
So I was now waiting for an angiogram. I had another heart attack, called the ambulance.
Finally I was sent light and siren to another hospital for Angiogram.
Where they discovered my LAD was completely blocked AND calcified. I was alive because of the collateral vessels my heart had made as my LAD slowly blocked and calcified had an emergency bypass surgery. Open heart.
Later I was questioned over and over by different doctors as to why I had ignored my symptoms saying I had to have had some severe symptoms for quite some time. They even sent in a psychiatrist to see what was wrong with me that I didn’t seek help.
Well I had sought help. Every time I saw my family doctor which was every month for medication refill…I would say the same thing. But I was just treated like I was someone who was a hypochondriac..
So. Yah my trust for Doctors is apparently not any more than their trust in me.
I should have died…or certainly could have. By the grace of god I’m alive. And very little to do with the doctor who ignored me for years. The surgeon said that had to have been building for at least ten years. I’d mean mentioning it for at least five years. I actually had to beg to even have my blood pressure taken finally. My vision was becoming suddenly blurry at times, I told my doctor..but I was ignored.until finally I did my own research and asked my doctor to take my blood pressure. He did. It was very high. He said it was no worry it was simply because of White Coat syndrome
    like a hypochondriac

@yorkcardiology Hiya Dr. Gupta, I’m 20 years old and I had 2 ablations for SVT when I was 18. Even though SVT is harmless and I was fixed, I developed SEVERE cardiac anxiety and started having NSVT / PVCs and wore 3 holter monitors, and my cardiologist kept reassuring me that my SVT was gone and my heart is simply reacting to the medical trauma I went through as a teenager. Because SVT is so scary (my heart was 270). Thie video brought tears to my eyes because I keep trying to seek reassurance / comfort from my doctors instead of moving on and living my life. I feared death 24/7 until I realised that I’m only 20, and what happened to me didn’t make me weaker, it made me stronger and more in tune with my body and my health. Thank you so so much! God bless

"Cardiac Anxiety" pretty much describes my entire life, especially when I was a young adult. I've always had pulsatile tinnitus (ear problems, also turns out there's a tumor there now, but I hear the wooshing of my blood flow, my brain interprets it as my heartbeat, constantly).
This constant awareness of my heartbeat has at times caused utterly debilitating anxiety, especially during times when the pulse goes away and I can't hear it anymore - that will pretty much send me into a full blown panic because my mind thinks my heart has just stopped. The adrenaline will get my blood pressure high enough that I hear the pulse again - then I settle down and the cycle would just repeat.
I've gotten much better at accepting it now into my adulthood but it can still happen, and in my teenage and early 20s it was so bad I couldn't even leave my home.
I've seen a cardiologist, had an echo and an EKG, a 48 hour monitor, all the works. They all think there's nothing really wrong with me, heart looks good and beats strong, so I have to just try and tell myself not to worry about it. But I wish I knew any kind of truly effective therapy other than "just become numb to it". Because at this point, curing the tinnitus I feel like it would only send me into a constant state of panic.
If you took the time to read this, thank you

What really increases anxiety is all the stories, which I hear on a regular basis, that a doctor told someone "it's just anxiety" while refusing to do appropriate tests, and then within a few months the person learns that they have a quite significant medical illness.
I have learned a good response to the doctor: "I want you to put in my medical record that you have told me that this is just anxiety and that you are refusing to do appropriate medical tests." And then you make sure they put it in the records and if they don't you file a complaint. But usually at that point they will agree to running tests.
Unquestionably, anxiety will make cardiological problems worse.

I live with cardiac anxiety/phobia/fear, and get panicky when my heart rate is high, even when there’s a good reason for it to be. I can get quite obsessed with my pulse and checking if it’s normal or fast.
The rational side of my mind is convinced there’s nothing wrong with me, and this was confirmed by a Holter monitor test. I have a structurally-normally heart with a resting HR of 65. I am overall very healthy; don’t smoke, some drink and have a good diet.
I had an episode of costochondritis a few years ago which didn’t get diagnosed or resolved for a long time, and this had me convinced it was a heart issue. The cardiac phobia emanated from that time and still exists.
Over the years of cardiac hyper-awareness I started to noticed skipped heartbeats, I probably would never have known about them to this day had I not become so fearful and conscious of my own heart. Again, my rational mind is sure they are normal and benign, but the irrational mind causes me to panic whenever they occur.
One comforting thing is that I noticed a pattern to the irregular heartbeats. They almost exclusively occur some time after large meals, and are ALWAYS followed by a burp, usually within a few minutes. They are due to gas in the stomach passing through the oesophageal sphincter into the oesophagus, interfering with the vagus nerve in the process. I suspect the heavy use of Ibuprofen during my costochondritis played a part. Perhaps my LES is also a bit weak (magnesium supplements helped reduce the symptoms a lot, for some reason), or I have a slight hiatal hernia, but I am unsure.
I am almost completely convinced of this vagus nerve theory, although I haven’t consulted anyone about it. Knowing that, I can adapt my eating habits accordingly, and avoid foods which ferment in the stomach, eating slowly, and not overeating. When I do this, my symptoms are much more manageable.
I suspect these irregular heartbeats are actually very common, but most people don’t know they have them because they are not hyper-aware of their heart.
The video on this channel about ‘looking out for snakes’ helped me a lot, amongst many others.

Me too having similar issues. At night I wake up having a pain in the middle of the torso, just below the heart then I sweat a lot because of the pain and fear. I assume it as Gas, Acid reflux, or some stupid thing related to the food I ate. I wait until it passes and then I get back to sleep. The Question is; Why does it happen at around 3 AM? Anyway I am shy to visit any hospitals, because I know they will come into some issues and put into some treatment. I made up my mind Come whatever it may be because I am carrying on without any issues the majority of the time. I am not taking any medicines. But I have become very sensitive that triggers anxiety in me, even while eating food or after an exhaustive day. I conclude it could be related to a stressful day, food, drinks, mental thoughts etc. or a nutritional deficiency.

Heart health anxiety became a “thing” in my life after finding my father deceased from a heart attack. This was compounded by my obesity and ectopic beats which my GP told me were normal?
Even after 24 hour monitors I wasn’t convinced culminating in a 999 call and a huge panic attack response.
Today I can control the anxiety strangely by exercising which helps convince me that if I had a problem with my heart I’d have surfaced it by now by raising my HR through exercise.
Your video illustrating the differences in rhythms really helped me so thank you both
Oh and I now take Magnesium Taurate which I’m pretty sure has helped me.

How refreshing having a cardiologist thinking out of the box. This condition has destroyed my whole life, run to every medical professional I could find for help. After years of cardiologists and tests, psychologist and psychiatrist, private counsellor, I still have symptoms. When I hear people are agoraphobic for 20 years, I always think I bet they got bad cardiac and breathing issues. This is such a serious condition, thank god your talking about it. Lot's of people's lives are completely destroyed by this and the affect on the family is soul destroying.

Thank you both for this invaluable video. Like you, Dr. Gupta, I lost an extremely close and special friend a few months ago. Since his passing (the beginning of January), my normal amount of PVCs (a few per day) has increased 10-fold. My PVCs have been primarily triggered by stomach/vagus, and I suppose that's the case even now, too, and I am eating antacids and acid-reducers which have helped some. I've been having PVCs for the past 40 years, worn the 24-hour monitors, had the tests, etc., and cardiologists have told me my heart is structurally fine. But I haven't seen a cardiologist in years, so this increase in PVCs (sometimes 200 per hour), coupled with my 66-years of age, makes me wonder-anxious-about how strong my heart truly is. This video makes me think I'm in this vicious cycle-grief, physical upset, vagus nerve pressure, stomach issues, hence PVCs, then anxiety about it all, so PVCs continue. Thank you for giving me this insight I didn't have before.

Similar situation happened with me. Cardiologist and primary doc told me i was over thinking and it’s anxiety or gastritis. No matter how many times i made appts and asked for different testing they kept telling me your stress test and EKG are normal, well finally had a suncope episode which looking back may have possibly been a mini stroke. My daughter called emergency and they were very alarmed from my very slow heart beat and low oxygen saturation. With that i went to my cardiologist and that is when he finally had me do a ct scan with contrast which showed probable blockage and yet again he told me it is a false positive but let’s do an angiogram but nothing will be found. Guess what on the table and a stent as placed for an 80% blockage. I was a walking heart attack. So now even more then before my anxiety is on level 1,000. Now I know it is cardiac anxiety bxs i always swore something was wrong with my heart and these docs are not taking the time to do it evals with their patients.it is literally an assembly line. My cardiologist literally was given results on the sidewalk outside the actual medical office. I was demoralized after this and in rage!! Still have rage against the medical negligence that occurred by professionals.

@@bucii01 Compared to this video i jave other hypothesis, many of the cardiac anxiety is basically some early stage of arterial issue that cannot be detected yet, that raises adrenaline and tension alot and make them anxious! So what im saying cardiac evaluation needs to be very detailed for you to be sure! Regular ECG is not enough!
Most of this can be tested with getting on caloric restriction for 1 week, low sodium high fiber and low fat diet should help one understand if its mental or not issue.

I am so glad this is really being talked about now. I had a massive heart attack at 39 with small children. I was considered healthy. I was told it was caused by sudden cardiac dissection. I was told my heart stopped 3 different times over 24 hours. This sent me down a path of major cardiac anxiety. Every pain, every time my heart would randomly race etc etc. the anxiety would increase, and all the symptoms would get worse. I would think I was having another heart attack, causing many trips to the er and many test and many high medical bills. It took about 5 years before I somewhat felt myself again.recovery took alot longer than I expected. I wish this was talked about more then from my doctors. It has been 7 years post heart attack and I have spoken about it to other I have know who had heart attacks. Thank you. ❤

Thank you so much for posting this. Having listened to you both I believe that I’ve suffered cardiac anxiety. Three years ago I suffered chest pains, I went to hospital A&E three times and was told all looked fine..I didn’t feel it was though. I was 50, ate healthily, maintained a good weight and worked out regularly so I couldn’t understand it. My Dad died of a heart attack at 62 so that was in my mind and strangely a colleague of my age died suddenly of a heart attack around this time. I started to google heart issues and as you pointed out it actually made the symptoms worse. You made a very pertinent point about internet algorithms, I was bombarded by heart related issues on social media and this set me in a downward spiral. Eventually last year I was referred to a cardiologist and given an angiogram which looked ok. It was at that point I told myself that it was all in my head and have done things like mindfulness which has helped massively. Since the angiogram and a change in my mental approach I have not suffered any of the symptoms I had. Thank you both so much for putting this out there it’s vital that this is discussed amongst health professionals

I can relate to this. I'm turning 50 this year and my grandfather died of a heart attack when I was a boy, he was only 59. So the closer I get to that age, the more worried I get. Then a year ago, 2 of my friends from teenage years died from a heart attack, a month apart, they were the same age as me, only 48 years old. One of them was my best friend as a teenager. Six months later I end up in an ambulance with an AFib attack. Since then, life has been hell... every little pain or heart skipping a beat is a test to control my anxiety... it's exhausting.

I think I have cardiac anxiety. I have afib that is under control with flecainide, but what also shows up on echo is pulmonary hypertension. That distresses me more than the afib - and the docs kind of downplay it. Even though it is mild (25 mean on RHC), i fixate on that. Now, a couple months ago, my son - age 50 - dropped dead at work. Wasn't sick, didn't do drugs, wasn't drinking,. Autopsy is not in yet (they said it would take 12-15 weeks), but it has now ramped up my anxiety about my own health. Good topic. Thank you so much Dr Gupta and Matt. You are both God sent. I started following you recently and I have benefited alot. I have heart palpitations since i was 13 but lived a normal life without medication. I noticed that it was getting worse in May 2023, so i saw a cardiologist who suspected i had svt. I was started on different beta blockers for svt but i suffered significant side effects to all. I was then started on flecainide 300mg daily from August 2023 but i suffered significant side effects such extreme fatigue to a degree i couldn't walk for more than 3 minutes, i am a nurse but since i started taking flecainide I became home bound due to side effects. I finally had an ablation for the Svt in 9th January 2024. I thought I will jump out and go about my normal duties after 2 weeks. Is been nearly 3 months now, I Still haven't been able to go back to work. 8 weeks post ablation, I started having something like ectopic heartbeats. My last ECg showed i IST which was also picked up during my EP study for my svt ablation but they were not sure what was causing the ist. I also noticed that since ablation, i am having digestive issues. So severe that after i finish eating my chest and my stomach feels so tight and my heart rates goes up. Over the last 2 days i have been having mini heart palpitations but when I opened my bowels, this morning it subsided. I have my post ablation review on Tuesday. All these changes has caused me severe anxiety particularly fear around my heart health. I really appreciate this video. Any advice on how to manage these post ablation symptoms and anxiety please ❤

I have come to feel that there is some chemical reason for this, and I am so glad you have brought this up. I have been to therapy 4 times, always open ended and never seemed to resolve or help in any significant way.
So much helpful info here! Glad to hear basically that worry itself has never caused cardiac problems. I am certain my high BP is related to anxiety though. Would be interesting to hear your take in regard to blood pressure. I am on several BP meds (only occasionally alprazolam, went off of SSRIs) but would love to get off the BP meds!

The doctor performed to me an Echo, stress test, and even a Cardiac MRI! Everything turned out fine. But still, I experience 10,000 PVCs (Premature Ventricular Contractions) per day, and they start when I am under pressure or experiencing a lot of anxiety. It's very difficult to manage the anxiety once it starts, and equally hard to manage the PVCs when they begin. After the anxiety eases, I have to give my body a couple of days for the PVCs to stop.

When I take my heart beat test..the heart rarely acts up….why? Because I concentrate? As soon as I stop paying attention, my heart starts to act up again…

Amazing conversation. Thank you for putting a spotlight on this. It's sadly overlooked. - I feel terrible for Nic Mui and what happened on the Apple River. I know it was his heart...❤️

I do agree Dr Gupta that not having enough time after the loss of a loved one or other traumatic experience would definitely manifest itself through these channels, stored up it affects the body negatively, yes I 100% believe so.

Thank you so much for this vital information, I had two stents in my heart in January 2024 and I have had arterial fibrillations, it has been a difficult experience. This information is very good. Excellent information.

From Jamaica:thank you for understanding so well what people actually go through and having human compassionate responses, for putting these matters into questions and discussing with such decency and clarity. East Indian descent so family history, at 56 went to a family Dr who poo-poo-pooed me away as anxiety, went to a work meeting after with a top Dr (not Cardiologist) and his head nurse, they did the sam - never an examination or discussion. Had chest pains for about 6 weeks, continued working and caring for family. Daughter finally insist that a pulmonologist write up tests for me, sent results to a cousin in Barbados, who insisted I see a Cardiologist. Within a few days I was I the Cat Lab, evidence of a heart attack, right side 100% blockage can not stent but collateral arteries supporting, stent placed left side 86% blockage. Bad reaction to 40mg for 6months then 20mg for a year to cholesterol meds. Stopped 6 months ago, improving about to restart.🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈😞😞😞😞😞😞
