  • Steve Cha (aka Rockstar Eater) tries Portuguese food for the first time, at Natas Pastries in Sherman Oaks (Los Angeles). Not too many people know about Portuguese cuisine, and there aren’t that many Portuguese restaurants in Los Angeles. In fact, Natas Pastries is the only Portuguese restaurant and bakery in LA! Natas Pastries started in 2005, and has an impressive food selection, from its pastries like the natas and pao de deus, to its full restaurant menu, including Bacalhau, Francesinha, and Chourico Assado!
So what is Portuguese food like? Is it tasty? Find out in this episode as Rockstar Eater shows you traditional Portuguese food, eating Portuguese food mukbang style, and shows you his Portuguese food reaction!

That bread is way to thick for a francesinha, shoul be thin as not to feel dry, and that is definitely not the way to cook bacalhau com natas!! Should go in the woven to make a gratin! I think your best option is to come to Portugal!

There are as much varations of making a cod dish recipe as there are recipes. What do they say in Portugal? They have more than 1000 recipes to cook cod. Best option is always to go to the county but for LA its not bad at all. Sometimes getting the right products is hard. I wonder how he felt about the beer? He didnt even adventured on the pastry, deserts or cheese... so much yammy things yet to taste 🤗

I have to agree with you, doesn't look like Bacalhau com natas or francesinha (its made with linguiça/Chouriço, beef, ham/mortadela, cheese /in&out, fried egg and special sauce-always secret, and the bread is a little bit thinner)...

@@andrepedrosa1525 Yep. Not the same as Portugal. The Francesinha shown here does not look as good. In Portugal they wrap the whole sandwich like a gift in cheese and then pour that wonderful sauce over top.

  • @ruialmeida818

Well, I found the Francesinha odd... I'm from Porto and, traditionally, the francesinha is either made from leftover roasted beef or steak. The other ingredients are correct (the Portuguese sausage, the chouriço, and ham, etc), but the sauce looks wired. The sauce should be way runnier than that. It should be creamy, and that looks split. Also, the sauce should be spicy, with a nice beer flavor.
The rest of the dishes - the cod with cream (bacalhau com Natas) and the fisherman's bowl (ameijoas à bulhão pato) are, in fact, very authentic and they look great.

The heart of a francesinha is it's sauce as my mom would say (and was proven to me time and time again, bad sauce, bad francesinha). As long as the sauce tastes good all I ask...if for them to keep the slightly spicy (or really spicy if you dare) part of it. I find it my favourite part of the sauce~

Nice video, but that food has a massive American twist, nothing is the traditional way that should be...
FRANCESINHA is with Steak not Chicken and bread thickness should be half of the size, plus a nice runny sauce not thick.
Please come to the North of Portugal and you will see difference. But overall everything looked tasty and amazing but not traditional

Just my thoughts, exactly on the Francesinha! Overall a nice rendition, but definitely not 'authentic'. The bacalhau com natas (salted cod with the cream) really is a bit off - It goes on the oven and the texture is firmer... But nice olives, plenty of Portuguese wine... But hey, @Rockstar Eater, if you do come to Portugal, just have a tour - despite being such a small country, we have very different regional cuisine! Thanks for sharing, glad you liked it

That looks NOTHING like Portuguese food. It isn't your fault, you're just being scammed by the lady telling you its authentic, The cod is off (has to go in the oven and we put much more sauce), i dont understand the seafood with an onion mountain, the Francesinha like mentioned doesnt have chicken , the bread is much thinner (it obviously makes the dish much lighter if you can say that :P) and the sauce doesn't look like that one, that looks like a chili sauce, way too thick. Only thing thats right its the Chorizo but you cant screw that up for obvious reasons.....

Someone from Portugal who can cook, needs to go to LA and open a restaurant there... The food from that Natas restaurant, is definetly not typical. I mean, the dishes are typical, but they are just not made like that, nor look like that. Many flaws. I have never in my life seen Bacalhau com Natas made that way, or looking like that, it's sad, and the cooking totally wrong. Just the choriço was right. And the pastries looked nice btw.

Francesinha doesn't have chicken. If that one had, it's not the traditional dish. Btw, the bread is way to thick for a francesinha.
You should also try: charcoal grilled sardines, feijoada, arroz de marisco, bacalhau à Bás, arroz de pato, arroz de cabidela, amêijoas à Bulhão Pato, caldo verde, leitão assado and frango assado. Not to mention all the pastry and convent sweets we have, but those would be hard to find outside the country. Our gastronomy is one of our most precious treasures and it's incredible the variety you find in such a small country like Portugal.
But thank you so much for helping to spread our culture and cuisine.

Francesinha is a beef steak sandwish, with ham, and linguiça (a spicy portuguese saussage), all between two thin slices of bread, with melted cheese and a fried egg on top. All of those are topped with a lot of sauce (that is made from beef stock, beer, brandy, port, piri-piri, some butter, all cooked for a long time). The sauce from the vídeo looks like Marinara.
You should never put a dipping sauce for the fries, they go with the francesinha sauce as well. The fries and the sandwish should vê drenched in that sauce (kinda like poutine).
Francesinha is a variation of croque madame (a French Dish), and was invented in the 60s in Porto.

True for most dishes, but some staples you cannot just change as you go. While one can make slight adjustments to our personal preferences, you can't just change the essence of a dish and then call it traditional. :) We just comment a lot because the Portuguese folk are really proud of our heritage and like to see it well represented. Although, to the restaurant's credit, our food doesn't travel very well, as we rely a lot on fresh, local and seasonal products. Best!

      I agree!
The only thing that I could really let slide would be the chouriço, as some people prefer it a bit on the underdone side, but traditionally it's done until the skin is slightly charred and you can see the fat is rendered and dripping.
The other dishes are just a mess, that francesinha is completely wrong from the meats to the bread to the sauce, and the codfish is not done properly, looks really unappetising.
