  • On Saturday, June 10th, 2023, I headed back to my home away from home, beautiful Algonquin Provincial Park. There, I hiked 11.7kms on the Western Uplands Backpacking Trail to Thunder Lake, spot number two. This backcountry camp spot is particularly beautiful with fantastic water, access, including boulders for sitting and a sandy bottom. On this trip, I brought along my brand new Six Moons Lunar Solo 1P backpacking tent. This shelter sets up with a trekking pole, rather than tent poles; this was my first time using such a tent. As well, I brought along my Alpacka pack raft. For dinner, I brought my homemade and dehydrated Chana masala, which was remarkably flavourful and delicious (see recipe below). There are only 17 days until my big European hike and camp adventure! In the meantime, I hope you enjoyed this video. 🥰✌🏼
    Chana Masala
    INGREDIENTS
    • 1 cup uncooked brown basmati rice, for serving (optional)
    • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
    • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
    • 2 to 3 serrano or jalapeño peppers, minced (remove ribs and seeds)
    • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt, to taste
    • 5 cloves garlic, pressed or minced
    • 2 thumbs peeled and minced fresh ginger
    • 1 tablespoon garam masala
    • 1 tablespoon ground coriander
    • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
    • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
    • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    • 1 large can (28oz) diced tomatoes, with their juices
    • 2 cans (14oz each) chickpeas (or 3 cups cooked chickpeas), rinsed and drained
    • Lemon wedges, for garnish
    • Fresh cilantro, for garnish (optional)
    INSTRUCTIONS
    1. Bring a large pot of water to boil on the stove and rinse the rice in a fine-mesh colander. Once boiling, pour in the rice and give it a stir. Boil the rice for 30 minutes, then turn off the heat and drain the rice. Return the rice to the pot and cover the pot. Let the rice steam for 10 minutes. Remove the lid, fluff the rice with a fork and season with sea salt to taste.
    2. Cook the chana masala: In a medium Dutch oven or large saucepan, warm the oil over medium-low heat. Add the onion, serrano and salt. Cook until the onion is tender and turning translucent, about 5 minutes.
    3. Add the garlic and ginger, and cook until fragrant, about one minute. Stir in the garam masala, coriander, cumin, turmeric, salt and cayenne, then cook for another minute, while stirring constantly.
    4. Add the tomatoes and their juices.
    5. Raise the heat to medium-high and add the chickpeas. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook, reducing the heat to medium-low to maintain a gentle simmer for 10 minutes, or longer to allow the flavors to develop. Season to taste with additional salt, if desired.
    6. Serve over basmati rice, if desired, and garnish with a lemon wedge or two and a sprinkle of fresh cilantro leaves.

    I think that you did very well with your selection of the Six Moons Designs tent and the Alpacka Raft. They both look very well made and very functional and should add a lot to your adventurous hiking/camping experiences. As for you're being nervous and anxious about your upcoming summer long hike, that is quite normal and should be embraced as part of the experience. You will do great and you should just know that with all of your past accomplishments, your worries should just quickly fade away. You have already proven yourself many times over. And I will just say that the video here was another very enjoyable one and gave us another view of another part of that beautiful Algonquin Park. Thanks again for taking us along. See you on the next one.

    Hope all is well with you, Christina! Another beautiful campsite 😍. Fyi that orange & yellow mushroom you found growing from tbe log is "chicken of the woods", an edible & highly sought after mushroom! It just needs to be well-cooked before eating, & some people still will experience GI upset because they can't digest it properly...but for many people they enjoy with no issues! It's popular to make "fried chicken" with it 😊. Anyways that being said i know you aren't allowed to forage at Algonquin but it could be a good thing to know for another time & place 😁

      Is this one of those mushrooms that has an identical poisonous twin? I went on a hiking tour with Adam Shoalts once where he identified all of these edible mushrooms, but then in the same breath identified it’s identical, poisonous twin, ha ha. I’ve heard of chicken of the woods, actually. Let me know if it has a poisonous twin, please. Always great to hear from you and sorry for the exceptionally long delay in responding! Bye for now, Miss Star! 🥰✌🏼

      @@Womaninthewoods13 hey Christina! Chicken of the woods doesn'ttttt really have any poisonous look-alikes unless you're just really not even trying to properly ID haha. Key thing with chicken is that it's a polypore mushroom. Meaning its underside will always have a smooth surface made up of thousands of tiny pores. It always grows from wood in a shelf-like structure fanning out from a central attachment. Its colours vary from orange & yellow to orange & white. There are 2 different species of chicken that I know of that grow in Ontario. Laetiporus sulphureus will be bright orange & yellow. Laetiporus cinncinatus will be bright orange & white. Both are edible.
      The only actual poisonous "look-alike" I can think of to a complete novice would maybe be Jack-o-lantern mushrooms aka Omphalotus illudens. They grow from the base of trees, are bright orange but very distinctly grow in a cap & stem formation & most importantly - have GILLS on the underside of the cap, they are not a polypore. Chicken of the woods will never have gills.
      There can be other shelf-like polypores that can look similar but won't have those vivid colours like chicken & aren't toxic. There's much more I could elaborate here but difficult in a comment section lol.
      If at some point this summer you wanna go on a mushroom ID walk somewhere in the GTA I would be happy to take you 😊

    Are you cheating on Fireball?
    Seriously though, that looks like a great tent. Can't wait to see it in action. I can relate to your anxiety. One can plan and stress about things over and over just obsessing about each detail (especially if you're soloing). ...and then the time comes where you get in that car and go. Decisions have been made, for better or worse, that part is behind you and the part ahead is usually epic. You'll get there. Cheers!

    Did you filter your water from the creek or drank it straight up? 1:54

    • @Womaninthewoods13
      @Womaninthewoods13  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I definitely filtered the lake water! I used a Katadyn BeFree water filter and I also carry Aquatabs if I’m forced to use really murky water; didn’t need the Aquatabs this time. Or, sometimes I only use the aqua tops and don’t filter when the water is exceptionally clear and debris free. Without re-watching this video, I can’t remember exactly which system I used, but I definitely would not leave the water unfiltered, no matter how clear it looks. I hope that helps and let me know if you have any more questions.

    Great video Christina. Just a question are you supposed to seam seal the tent on the outside.

    • @Womaninthewoods13
      @Womaninthewoods13  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Coucou, Stephen! From the limited research I did, it is my understanding that you can do inside or outside, but doing inside is more aesthetically neat/pleasing I was actually considering doing both inside and outside. If you have any advice for me, please chime in now, as I have only just begun with the whole process. I eagerly await your response!

    • @Womaninthewoods13
      @Womaninthewoods13  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello again, Stephen! Just double checked with my friend who is an expert in all things camping/outdoors, Martin Pine, and he actually recommends seam sealing the outside rather than the inside. If you want to know why, let me know! I am glad you asked about this as it has made me ask more questions and give more thought to it all. Merci!

    • @stephenbouchard8075
      @stephenbouchard8075 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Womaninthewoods13 no problemo, just curious is all. I have never sealed any of my tents. I’m currently using the 3 f UL Lanshan 2p. If it were me I’d totally take the 3 moons design tent over the crappy tire. Weight savings would be totally worth it.

      @@stephenbouchard8075 No, I’m super glad you asked! Since, like I said, I only did minimal research, I did panic for a moment upon reading your comment. But now I feel much vindicated in my thus far decision to seem seal the outside. Thanks again! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼
