I fell in love w/ Abes character the moment he was introduced and I had no comic knowledge at the time but during the season 5 mid season break. I found out Abe gets killed by Dwight in the comic and I spent every episode of season 6 waiting for that gut punch and then when Denise got his death. I was like holy shit they are keeping Abe alive hell yea. But then I got my gut punch in 7x1 and a bit in 6x16 b/c when he was talking to Sasha abt starting a family and then his heart felt speech to Eugene. I knew that Abes time was coming.

For me, that's how a death hits more, a story that feels unfinished, a life literally cut short before they reached their peak.

I always liked the idea of Negan killing Abraham not randomly but on purpose cause he saw how vital Abraham was to Rick's group. He was one of the ppl in the lineup who didn't look afraid even when faced with the threat of death by Lucille. Rick was the leader but Abraham was the one who could rally the troops and actually come up with plans to fight back with his experience.

I HAVE SAID those exact words to my grandmother before she passed she was how I got onto the series via the show and in the comics and somewhat in the show
(with alot less show wise due to Daryl as ricks "right hand" where as in the comics it's Abraham after Tyrese's death)
The actual death of him in the show felt completely underwhelming and overshadowed by an older fan favorite survivors absolutely iconic and heart breaking death RIGHT when his family dream in a safe world was right in front of him.
The deaths upon first watch come off more shallow then the comic for alot of reasons imo mostly due to the cut swearing in the TV release but the combination was so underwhelming.
In a season they faked the audience out on both Glenn's death at the dumpster
And remixing Abraham's original death for a useless side character who in the comics was the BRAVEST doctor in comics.
Denise is a treat in the comics if you haven't read of her

You are 100% correct he told Rick that the Eeny Meeny Miny Moe was bullshit. He had his eye on Abraham from the get-go. He thought Abraham was Rick’s right hand man. He even tormented Rick about it in the lineup.
Edit; I went back are listening to what Captain Gold had said, and I misunderstood what he said in his last statement I thought he was saying that it was Daryl’s fault Abraham got killed. When he actually said it was Daryl’s fault Negan killed Glenn. Thanks for calling me out on my mistake.

@@MikeLewis1964but no one ever claimed Abraham's death was Daryl's fault? People claim GLENN'S death was Daryl's fault and I am willing to agree to an extent as I believe Negan never planned for the second victim and was forced to kill another due to the group's continued defiance manifesting mostly through Daryl at the time.

Finally a sane person. Glenn was a good character in season 1, after that he got more annoying with each passing episode. After he started dating Maggie almost every bit of dialogue from him was about protecting Maggie. She couldn’t go to the bathroom without Glenn thinking her life was in imminent danger and he had to be there to make sure nothing happened. Dude…. Everyone else is living in the same apocalypse as you yet they aren’t being a downer every minute of every day. I’ll go one further than saying Abraham was more of a loss than Glenn, I’m glad Glenn got taken out by Negan. Abraham and Eugene had a way of entertaining you just by no matter what they were saying. They both had the clever, whitty ways of talking that made us laugh regardless of what they were actually talking about. They weren’t the only ones tho, Negan and Simon were another two that could turn basic dialogue into something much more entertaining

I never cared about Abraham and I hated how he ended things with Rosita after everything they had been through. He didn't even handle it well he was a straight D*** about it to her. I think if he had been the only one who died and not Glenn too, nobody would have even cared about that lineup scene. It was Glenn's death that actually had an impact on the survivors beyond just Sasha and Rosita, who were the only two that really were attached to Abraham anyway. Otherwise to everyone else he was just a somewhat dickish brute tbh. The other survivors don't event talk about him after his death. Meanwhile Glenn's death led to a lot of development for the season 1 survivors who were remaining, which makes sense as Abraham hadn't been around more than a few months while Glenn was there from the start. Glenn's death had a bigger impact on both the fans and the survivors in the show and that's not even a debate.

I read a comment on another video that had a good idea which was to have Abraham die in the season 6 finale, so that Glenn’s death in the season 7 premier would’ve truly been shocking (which is what the show runners wanted) while also allowing the fans to process Abraham’s death in the time between the seasons. I feel this would’ve fixed the issue of Abraham’s death feeling like it was sidelined for Glenn’s and also would let the fans express their appreciation for Abraham’s character instead of focusing solely on Glenn

    • @theohuntt

I also think having Negan essentially break Rick by forcing him to nearly cut off Carl's arm was a mistake. 5:00 "Obviously there are people out there whose favourite character is Abraham" that's me! I'm people!
Don't get me wrong, I loved Glenn in the earlier seasons, but I genuinely can't remember what he did at Alexandria. Meanwhile, Abraham had taken charge of the wall construction crew, making him so much more valuable to the community as a whole. I hate how much his death was brushed aside on the show, and the actor saying he wasn't allowed to seek out new roles before season 7 premiered just adds insult to injury imo.
His death was so impactful for me. Just as he would've been ready to die for his country, he was ready to die for his community without a moment's notice. The one consolation is that he died thinking he saved everyone.
With his campy humour and his emotional depth combined, I think he's truly one of the most unique characters in the series. I think only Negan would be able to go bar-for-bar with one-liners.

Abe dying because he was the only one to show no fear to Negan makes sense. Even Rick is nearly pissing his pants, while Abraham stands (Kneels) firm. In terms of Abe him dying for that reason, it makes sense. The issue is Glenn died alongside him. No matter what, if you die in the same episode as a beloved season 1 character (Not to mention first in the episode) the audience/characters will always care more about the season 1 character.
It gives you no real time to process his death. Leaves him forgotten as the other guy who died. It's just like T-Dog dying in the same episode as Laurie. They clearly wanted to trick the audience since comic book readers and even a good chunk of the general audience would know who died here. So killing two characters off with Glenn being the second would be a shock. Just a shame both of these deaths together turned a lot of people off the show.

Literally one of the biggest badasses on the show, loved him with his big smile and cigar. While a part of me is glad he didn't get killed off like he did in the comics, I still feel he should have lived longer in the show. One aspect that really bothers me tho about his death is that it was very overshadowed by Glenn's death, and while I understand that Glenn was one of the og's and a long time fan favorite, I feel like killing them both off in the same episode and same manner did a disservice to Abraham, cause I feel a badass like that deserved to have his own episode dedicated to him and his eventual death. The only way Abraham would have survived to All Out War (and perhaps even beyond that) was if he stayed at Alexandria and helped protect it against any Savior attacks, instead of going with Rick and the others to Hilltop. Putting him in the Negan line-up is certain death for him, since he was the most logical choice for Negan to take out and make an example of (the biggest dude, showing little to no fear, and staring at Negan so defiantly and threateningly, which made Negan feel intimidated deep down and he knew that he couldn't break Abraham into submission like he could with the others). If Abraham wasn't there, Negan would have chosen someone else who showed the least amount of fear (either Daryl or Michonne), or chosen someone truly at random, just like he did in the Comic Series.
And with Abraham alive, he would have gotten Rick and the others to fight back against the Saviors sooner. I think he would play along with submitting to Negan's rule, but only for a short while, and then strike when the time is right. All Out War would start sooner and end sooner as well, and either Abraham dies fighting in All Out War, or manages to survive and gets to help the group deal with the Whisperers, the Reapers, and the Commonwealth.
It would be so cool if Jesus survived as well. Abraham and Jesus could have become an extremely badass duo who fought alongside each other against the Saviors, Whisperers, Reapers, and Commonwealth (if one or both of them manage to last that long into the story anyway).

I would have love to have seen a fight with him and Beta, that could have been a good match up. Also it would have been interesting to see if him being alive would have changed things up with Sasha. He went out like a badass so I don’t regret his death scene. As sad as it was, it was the perfect way for his character to end. He had balls of steel and too much potential. Sometimes you have to leave the audience wanting more not less and they gave him a good season. Glenn on the other hand was done dirty season 6. He had no story arc and he was missing for a lot of the season due to his fake death. I wish they gave Glenn something subtle at least so when his death comes it feels like they actually utilised his character.

@theohuntt thanks for the response. I always liked Abraham because to me he was similar to the other boss characters; who never hesitated to handle things. I would have loved to see him & Sasha's relationship develop as well. And I actually didn't care as much that Glenn died because unpopular opinion; I found him and Maggie a bit annoying.

@shirayasha yes, I do remember him kneeling more upright. Rick was also kneeling that way; that gave me the impression they didn't want Negan to think they were intimidated - like the others, who were visibly shaken.

While I agree on what you two have said about Abraham's death and especially how he was simply forgotten by just about all the group I disagree about Glenn not having more story (and I felt the same about his death in the comic). Glenn, like Carl should have become a leader in the show. He basically should have been the bridge between Rick and eventually Carl.
In so many ways, Rick became Shane and at this point in the TV show he had taken on the negative qualities of Shane and had very little of his humanity and none of Glenn's compassion (which combined with his resourcefulness made TV Glenn more compelling than TV Rick IMO). I do think there was more for Abraham but I think Glenn's future could have been more interesting. He would have had time to deal with his part in the Savior massacre that led to Negan's violent retribution which honestly could have shown a different side to Glenn and forced him to grow and actually struggle with maintaining his humanity and learning to become a leader especially since...
And here's where the purists get angry.
Rick became the victim of Lucille. This makes more strategic and narrative sense considering he's the leader and if Negan truly wants to subjugate the Alexandrians, killing the leader is the best way to do so. This would've made for a far more interesting Savior war as say both Glenn and Abraham get to butt heads with how to deal with the Saviors. Abraham preferring a more scorched earth, take no prisoners way to war and Glenn both trying to defeat and outwit them while suffering from feelings of guilt for even taking part in the initial massacre and how it led to Rick's violent end and also struggling not to lose himself.
There definitely was more to Glenn's and Abraham's story and it's a shame that we didn't have a show runner and writers with a bit more imagination.

They don't mention it as a sacrifice because it was not a sacrifice. He was literally chosen by Negan. Abraham did not have an option of whether or not he was going to get chosen or not it was not Abraham who sacrificed himself for the greater good. It was me and who took Abraham as a sacrificial token for all of the people that that group has killed. But because it was Megan's Choice nobody looks at it as though Abraham made an ultimate sacrifice himself

I don't think Abe's death was a cheap shot at all. As much as I like Abraham, i have to say that his death actually made a lot of sense to me, as well as his inclusion in the lineup.
Abraham is probably the strongest and most intimidating man on the group. So, he'd naturally join Rick. It wouldn't make a lot of sense for Rick to have someone like Gabriel and maybe even Eugene since they're both weaklings. but if there is ANYONE Rick would need to bring, it would definitely be Abraham and Glenn.
also Abraham making himself look bigger than everyone and standing up against Negan in the subtle ways he did to show that he isn't afraid is exactly something Abraham would do. Glenn jumping out of line and attacking Negan after he threatens to kill a sickly Maggie is exactly something Glenn might do. BUT, Daryl punching Negan isn't something Daryl would or even COULD do. I mean, the guy got shot and is clearly sick or weak from an infection or blood loss. Not to mention that Daryl hasn't even spoken to Abraham and Rosita throughout the entire show, despite being in the same group. so why the hell would Daryl punch Negan? I feel like that only happened so that they could find an excuse to kill Glenn. so really, the true cheap shot of that episode was Daryl somehow gaining the strength to punch Negan for almost no reason, risking everyone and his own life, just so that the show could write in Glenn's death.

As you can see during the Lineup, he was the calmest of the Group, due to him being calm under Stress, he learnt that in the Army. He probably was also extremly calm during the War in the Middle east.
