Rahdo - You summed up my thoughts about Wingspan so well. I did a tutorial of the Automa, it just runs so effortlessly and feels like legitimate competition. Particularly when you use the green side of that end-of-round scoring card. Great job as usual, sir. Elizabeth nailed this one and Stonemaier turned production quality up to 10. :)
Shit. I wanted to spend less on games in 2019. This is not starting well...

The game looks and sounds like it should be lame, but it really isn't.
The pieces and additions like the dice tower are top quality and the game itself is absolutely brilliant. I adore this game and would happily play it anytime.
That could be said about any Uwe game and most euros.
I was already excited about the look of the game and its components but to find out not only is it an engine builder but also a phenomenal game with zero caveats from Rahdo?! Wow--super excited for this one. Will pre-order it for sure.
well, the one caveat i can think of is the rules shouldn't have said you're building an aviary, when in face you're building a bird reserve. but that's all i got! :)
Caveat - the bird feeder (how its used) is actually a birdhouse (in form), makes me laugh every time someone calls it a bird feeder
WARNING: The game has 20 wrong printed cards and errors in the rule book. Just check "cassins finch" and "cassins sparrow". Don't buy the misprinted version.
@@MUFSpoiler also, for the record, the errors are very minor, and the publisher is offering free replacement cards, sent for free to all owners of the 1st edition. so no reason to wait if you're keen on playing sooner than later :)

this game just looks stunning. It does seem interesting and I loved the theme in some of those bird abilities (like that falcon eating little birds!). This is the type of themes that I enjoy that people put out there. Something that besides being a fun experience can also serve as a tool to educate people and make us aware of the importance of protecting animals and their environments :)
This seems to be competing with Everdell. It's very pretty, seems light on rules overheard, has passive player interaction, and most importantly is a tableau builder. I have kind of looked past this because of recently getting Everdell and am enjoying it. How do you think they compare?
hmm, interesting. to be honest, i rate this higher as it's more satisfying play. i feel like i get more done in a given session

My dad is a lifelong birder. He also really likes puzzly stuff. I've been looking for a long time for something to play with him, and this is a no brainer!!
Just played it today. It is a great game.
Wow! Wingspan will be in my collection now. It looks so beautiful too. That is actually somewhat deceiving. In a way, it doesn't seem so intricate of an engine builder on the surface and a glance of the box. So, glad I watched this video!

Thank you for the run through, extended gameplay and of course the final thoughts. I have been keeping an eye on this game for a little while not and it just looks amazingly beautiful and I think the gameplay would suit our games group as well as my family, which is a double bonus. You seem to confirm my initial impressions, so I have to check how much it is to buy and have shipped to the UK, or if there are UK retailers that will have it. It's very high on my wishlist for 2019. Thank you so much for sharing. :)

Hey Rahdo, how do you feel the about the variability of the engine between games. One thing I love about Agricola for example is that you have a completely different engine every game

Again this looks really interesting. Have you tired the Automa with 2 players to have a third competitor? I would think it would make it more interesting to fight for 1st place in each round. Definitely on my wish list.

yup, that's the way i always do it, to minimize 'spam' people get if they subscribe (sometimes i might post 2 or 3 runthroughs at a time, which can be 10 or 15 individual videos).

I really am not a big fan of birds, especially blue jays. I stayed away from the game because of that but I have FOMO and I think I should get it now. Your final thought videos is usually my decision on buying games! One of the first I ever watched was for Shakespeare and that’s still a top 10 game for me. Thanks as always
This game has "a lot" of randomness and luck of the draw, more than most tableau builders, but it is fun.

well, wingspan is definitely lighter and much shorter (a big part of why we like i over TM). other than that, i'd say their comparable in actual quality of the gameplay design... a 3 games are actually!
Not sure why so many people are comparing this to Terraforming Mars. The two share very little in common. The mechanisms of this game is the most similar to Deus: performing one action triggers a chain of previously played cards.
you'll notice i also referenced deus in this vid :)
Love Deus, not sure how people think latching something on to someone else's engine on this level is fun. I love Deus. The whole indirect positive interaction here I find very lacking.
Just played a solo game on Tabletopia and loved it. Can't wait till march when it comes to retailers.
in TM u dont cover cards to get only the one benefit, u got all benefits ;)

Hey Rahdo, love your video, as always ! I've played Wingspan in 4 players mode, I found it great but very slow, I believe it is due to the time people are taking to play... If I buy it I'd play it with my wife and solo (I love playing solo). Is it really worth 50 euros? I already possess TM, Res Arcana and Five Tribes which we love to play with my wife. thanks ! everything's scattered all around. when i set up the room, i just pulled stuff out of moving boxes and threw them up on the shelves randomly just so i could have a background to test filming. and about 25% of my games i don't have room for, so they're stacked up on the floor next to the shelves, just off camera. and sadly, everything's stayed in the same space since. i need to get another set of shelves because ikea kallax (what i've got now) doesn't hold near as much as ikea billy (what i had in malta)
More constricting than the billys but sturdier and nicer looking. Thanks for putting another game on my wishlist, now I have to make room in the Stonemaier area of my Kallax shelves...
So, Rahdo, is this a Terraforming Mars killer or not?
for us it is, easily, but the industry is big enough for both games i reckon :)

Look a SM game. Bought.
I played it a few weeks ago. I had never heard of it before, so I had no expectations at all. It really wasn't good. It's fine if you like birds I guess, but the mechanics were incredibly uninspired. As an engine builder it fails miserably because of how long it takes to get cards out. By the time your "engine" starts working the game is almost over, and even then it doesn't amount to much. Just a few extra eggs, which you run out of by the fourth round anyway because there aren't enough included in the box for a 5-player game. Perhaps it's a good 2-player game? I don't know, but it sure as heck doesn't sing with 4-5.
Most of the people I played it with seemed to agree. It does nothing new, and it what it does do it doesn't do well.
If you and Jen (more likely Jen, apparently) ever want to travel doing birdwatching, let me know! :)
The game is $$$. Is it worth it for SOLO play?
that i can't say because i'm not really much of a solo gamer. I can say you shouldn't pay huge prices because it's out of print right now... there'll be another print run within a few months, so it's certainly worth waiting :)

nope. i said wingspan was the best game of the year, at the moment I recorded the final thoughts in late december 2018. i thought it was pretty clear that i was being facetious :)
super hyped game that wont fly long enough, unless it gets MASSIVE changes in expansions. PASS.
Yes. They didn't have to do all these but they went above and beyond so they can rip us a big hole in our wallet. Those productions don't come free for consumers.
That is true, but this game is being sold for a very reasonable price compared to most games that I see that have lesser quality to the components. It is only $41.00 if you re willing to wait for it until release to retail in March. Personally I got mine ordered first day it was available from Stonemaier for only $49 and I will have it by the middle of January at the latest. Can’t wait to play. And they are working on expansions that will feature birds from other regions of the world. This thing is going to have abundant replayability
