    What is your favorite Wingspan strategy?

    • @marknadeski7485
      @marknadeski7485 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really a strategy -- I just like the predator birds because it's thematically fun. Sadly I always seem to get the cards that let you roll the dice not in the feeder and gain something if you roll a rat (for example) and I never roll the symbol needed. Maddening. I need to remove those birds from the deck.

      You can never go wrong with laying a bunch of eggs in the final round, as a matter of fact that’s all I do in that final round is lay eggs...😁👍🏻

    • @cdtrichard
      @cdtrichard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the best and most OP strategy is getting the Raven or Crows that allow you to discard and egg and take any two food from the supply. Those cards are generally in the lay egg row so you get eggs and any two food on the same turn. When someone gets that card early in the game they generally win big!

      @Jackson DalllasHi Jackson! I don't remember comment-baiting being a Wingspan strategy lol. We enjoy asking our viewers questions and reading their responses. You're welcome to not participate in them if you feel they are "baity." =)

    Always enjoy watching you guys duke it out but this particular episode got my ocd going thru the roof when you guys don’t move your action cubes when taking any actions other than playing birds, still a great video nonetheless.....😅🤷🏻‍♂️

    Thank you!! I love sitting on our balcony, playing Wingspan and listening to the birds sing. We live near an airport, usually there‘s a plane every 5 minutes, but for the past 15 months it‘s been so quiet you can hear the birds all day, it‘s amazing. Being in Europe it will be fun playing with those very birds in the game, definitely getting this expansion! :-)

    Really enjoyed watching you play. I noticed with the "draw 2 and discard one from your hand at the end of your turn" card you always discarded one of the two you picked up, but you can actually discard any bird from your hand.

    Great playthrough and you summed the expansion up nicely I think. Favourite strategy is tucking if I can but you have to roll with what you are able to do with the cards you get.

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching! I agree, I like the cards that allow you to tuck, but you're absolutely right. You have to be flexible and roll with the punches haha

    Great video. Monique's food engine vs Naveen's card drawing engine. But Monique's engine played into the last round bonus which gave her +5 points which was the difference. Nice planning. 😜

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha yeah that's absolutely right. I (Monique) was nervous for most of the game though whenever Naveen would activate his card engine. So it definitely kept me on my toes

    I usually play solo so, keeping an eye on Automa's bonus card, and try to minimize damages. Not always easy, not many wins but lots of fun. I made up a house rule, it is called 'adopt a bird' rule. At the beginning of the game you can choose a bird from the hole deck that you can see in your surroundings or neighborhood. It has to be a brown power and single habitat card. Once you've chosen it, complete your hand with four other cards. Another house rule is ‘migration' tile. When there is a card that says to 'discard a card', choose a card to be discarded and place it instead on a cut piece of paper titled Migration at the top. That card can be used as soon as the next turn, like coming back to your hand. Only one card can be put down on the migration 'tile'. Once the space available, another card can be placed down. And that’s it. Wingspan is my favourite game and can’t wait to get Oceania expansion.

    Love birds and any game involving them. Got Wingspan and this expansion a few weeks ago and I can't wait to play it. Got also this other game called Piepmatz - little songbirds.

    Just learning to play this game. On the first couple of turns after they played a bird they were using the take a food action and not paying an egg along with it. Am I understanding the rules correctly?

    • @kaylaallen7409
      @kaylaallen7409 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe you may be missing something. You do not need to pay an egg when taking the "Gain Food" action. The egg costs along the top of the player mat are connected to the "Play a Bird" action. When playing a bird you will place an action cube above the column you are playing the bird in(they neglected to do so in this video). You will then pay the egg cost indicated at the top of that column in addition to the birds food cost.
      Once finished paying all costs you will slide your cube over to the far left to show you have used that action.
      Also in this video they didn't move any of their cubes back to the left so don't get confused by that. When placing a cube in any of the 3 habitats, first resolve the main action for that row(gain food, lay eggs or draw cards) then walk your cube back to the left, stopping on each bird with a brown ability and activate each of those. After doing so you will leave your cube to the left of that row.

    Watching this totally made me want to play Wingspan again. Last couple times I played was at a 5-player count and for me the game really bogs down with 5. Maybe 3 players is the sweet spot? What do you think on player count?

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I TOTALLY agree! Three is a sweet spot for us with Wingspan. I've played with 4, which was fine...but it made me not want to play with 5 lol. Two is also great!

    • @Cystlib
      @Cystlib 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why do you think so? (I've only played the game with 4 people so far)

    • @marknadeski7485
      @marknadeski7485 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cystlib For me it is a matter of the uneven turn lengths. On some turns, all you want to do is play a bird card - which takes no time at all. On other turns, you are doing something like gathering food which then activates every card in that row. Depending on what these actions are, the turn length can become long which can lead to a lot of dead time. For example, if you have a turn in the third or fourth round sandwiched between turns from the other players where everyone else is doing a longer turn, you have a LONG wait. Now Wingspan isn't very complicated so once players are familiar with the game, even a turn with many actions shouldn't take too long, but it was such a popular game when it came out that everyone wanted to try it - meaning at game nights it would often have 4 or 5 players and several of those players would be new, which just led to a terrible mix of new players and higher player count. So this sounds negative, but I actually really like the game.

    • @Cystlib
      @Cystlib 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marknadeski7485ah okay. I've noticed Wingspan takes considerably less time once people know the game well because new players need to do a lot of reading, but after getting familiar with it our 4 player games never seem to last too long. I also imagine the game is slightly more balanced with more players (face up cards change more often, birds that activate in-between turns are more useful), but I have no experience to back this up

    • @marknadeski7485
      @marknadeski7485 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cystlib Oh, those are good points! I'm sure you're correct in the better balance at higher player count. Definitely a plus for the face up bird cards to change more frequently between turns. And yes, any bird that does something based on another player's action will definitely be better at higher player counts - so I can see where those birds may not be chosen as much in a 2 player game, making the bird refresh issue even worse. I guess it comes back to familiarity. If people know it already it's great. Before I started attending game meetups, this game would have been perfect because I had such a small group of game players that after we learned one game, we would play it for months together. But after finding these meetups, I find with so many board games competing for our play time, it's hard to get the same game to the table often enough to hit that sweet spot. How I miss my game meetups. And people. 😕

  • @meep7779
    @meep7779 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I would like to point out that when you take an action, you move the cube from birds with brown powers one to the next and you put the cube to the left of the final bird in the row. Also, when you play the bird, you put the cube in the column where you're going to play the bird, then you move it over to the play birds action spot. In the box of the expansion, there is a card that tells you the order of things at the end of round. In the last round at the end, you scored the end of round bouns first, but you should use the teal powers first. This matters becuase the end of round goal was "in your supply". If you had activated the teal power first, where you discarded the worm to tuck a card, you would not have had a worm for the final end of round bonus.
