It's exactly like introducing black nobility in british aristocracy in bridgerton. You think you're so funny and sarcastic or what?! It's one of the reasons why DA is criticised so much. Although fiction, it needs to have some basis of truth because it's not fantasy. It's based on real life events and era. Get over yourself.

I DO love the unspoken friendship between Mary and Barrow, yeah, they don't talk that much as she and Carson, but they respect each other and know how they truly are and they value each other for that part that they know but not anyone else, for example, he saw Mary taking that man to her room (don't remember his name) but never used the information to his own benefits, then when he tried to take his life, she was the only family member that paid him a visit, and she talked to him about loneliness.
And look here at 4:58 how booth reacted when the lord called him stupid fool, they actually synchronized. We know he didn't like to be called like that, but surely she wasn't happy about it either.

If you listened to him you can get an idea why Barrow's character was the way he was. As a retired teacher I can remember when some parents would compliment me and I would return the compliment by reminding them that parents are children's very first teachers and their children were on the whole kind, trustful and good workers much appreciated by any teacher would consider themselves to be honored to have such a student in their classroom. You will remember that Thomas felt his father did not like him. Also Thomas's big problem was one of confusion over his sexual Identity. He knew what he was but wanted to be different and it wasn't till the Dr. Advised him to try and and find his happiness where he could.

Once again you cut out the Most important part of the scene. At least in my opinion. It's when dinner is over and Stowe goes downstairs to retrieve his nerves and discover the culprit. He pulls Thomas into the Butler's pantry and has Thomas write a note in his own hand. When Stowe realizes that the handwriting was different than that on the note, the two of them scheme a way to make Lord Sinderby regret his actions. The next day, a young lady and her son show up at the castle. Obviously the little boy is Lord Sinderby's (illegitimate) son. The boy even bears his name, Daniel. Lady Rose jumps in to save the day, by "befriending" the young lady and her son. All while Lord Sinderby is panicking in the corner. Once everyone leaves and prepares for dinner, Lady Mary and Lady Rose corner Stowe into confessing his involvement. He agrees to improve his behavior in future, especially toward Tom. Afterwards, Lord Sinderby thanks Rose for her love and devotion. It was at that moment he grows to appreciate, respect and love her.

I'm pretty sure James Faulkner, who in Downton portrays Lord Sinderby and in Game of Thrones he portrayed Randyll Tarly, is now always considered to be given a role in any movie or tv series where a tense, uncomfortable dinner scene is needed.
