I'm glad you mentioned the scissors because since being given my first multi tool I've found I use the scissors a lot and they are a must have on any multi tool for me.
Try almost any NexTool Multitool. They usually have full size very impressive scissors. Due to German Weapons Laws I had to get the NexTorch MT10, which is basically the NexTool Flagship Pro but with a different blade so it does not open one handedly. It has a liner lock, though
I have been recording video on the Rocktol for a day now and should finish up the progress in a few days. I had to modify the blade due to the factory grinding being horrendous but other that that she is a beast.
I only own a couple of SAKs, and to be honest, the only one I ever carry is the Rangergrip 78. I don't EDC it, but will have it in my kit for trekking in the woods. the main reason I like it is the very large, and effective saw that comes on it. it is much larger, and cuts even more aggressively than the best of my Leatherman tool saws. if I had not gotten used to carrying two Leatherman tools I might carry the Rocktool with a single Leatherman. but truth is I often need to hold the nut on the back of something while tightening the bolt from the front. this need is actually why, in 1985, I bought the second Leatherman PST while I was in Basic training. I was lucky that my buddy had one as well, or we would have been stuck in the middle of nowhere.
I've never needed to upgrade beyond my pioneer / pioneer x for urban EDC and Huntsman for the woods when I travel abroad to be honest. It is especially important for me that the blade isn't locking since I keep traveling to Europe quite often and even if I instinctively pack my leatherman, I rarely carry it since locked blades are frowned upon over there. I think this video and the one Jon Gadget made definitely highlight that Victorinox needs to start innovating again, since a bunch of competitors are at their heels now, whereas 10 years ago they were miles ahead of the rest of the bunch.
Based on your previous review, i jumped on the bid A and ordered a Rocktol. I am really impressed with it's utility and value to cost ratio. Thanks again for good advice.
I picked up the Rocktol based on your review and have been carrying it with me this week. So far I've used it to open a couple of cans to make chili, replaced a damaged outlet, installed a kitchen sink, swapped out a light fixture, and cut up a couple of boxes. For twenty bucks there really isn't anything to complain about. I was gifted the Gerber dual-force at Christmas. It's a fairly decent multi-tool. I quit carrying Swiss Army Knives 20 plus years ago because there are much better options available.
Love the Gerber armbar - scout. The long indent nail gap at the end of the saw removes fishooks like the end of a SAK fish scaler. The ONE thing I really needed a pliers multitool for outdoors. Saw scales fish better than a scaler to boot and the burnt orange make it easy to find and looks gorgeous. I always have a SAK Classic on my keys for the scissors and to this day NO one makes scissors like Victorinox and it really frees up my multitool carry which used to revolve around (often inferior) scissors.
Thank you Aaron for following up so quickly with the added Armbar comparison. I already own and liked the older version of the Armbar so I'm probably not switching to the Rocktol. [I do like and use the magnetic bit holder and extra bit reach.]
I own all three of these or close variants. I gave the Armbar to my son, who likes it. I seldom use the medium sized SAK. But the Rocktol is with me every day and I like it.
@@m5msm kitchen knives can't even have tips over there. You'd have to bust the tip off and then pray your cops don't find some other reason why that tool may be illegal
@@dualsportoutdoors Not sure who told you that. Our kitchen knives are the same as the rest of the world. You're just not allowed to carry them on the street without a valid reason, such as being a chef travelling to and from work, as they are a fixed blade usually longer than the permitted length. Personally the medium sized Victorinox(91mm?) is more than enough knife I need to carry everyday.
only been carrying the Rocktol for a few days but love it so far. Very comfortable in hand and all the tools work as advertised. Outstanding value for the money, ima not gonna even try the Armbar. as far as the SAK goes, I love them from a collecing standpoint but havent carried one in years
I ordered the Rocktol because of your last video and great review. It's a great companion to my many Leathermans. Keep up the great work. John from Texas.
Although it’s too big for edc in the pocket or keychain/belt pouch, I have always preferred the SAK Swiss Champ because of its versatility in having most of the tools offered in various models. I keep mine in a backpack. I also have a leatherman sidekick that was a gift and works well. I plan to buy the SAK Ranger 78 or 79, probably the one that has the corkscrew because I don’t need another Phillips and the corkscrew is versatile for untying knots.
It's really wild to think they put out 45k pieces a day. Absolutely mind bending they move thar many. What's funny is as deep in the knife world as I am I have never only a SAK and the only Victorinox knife I've ever owned is a hurter pro that I was given a month ago.
i love the rocktol i like the way the tools lock and i really like the blade shape on this i just think its a neat tool i recommend it greatly if you are looking something different.
I’ve carried a leatherman squirt ps4 for years. Always in my pocket even if I carry a bigger MT. Not a day goes by that don’t use it. Best pocket MT I’ve ever owned.
I've carried SAK over 20 yrs. Lost one from pocket - perhaps it's that I check tools and l know the weight an feel in my pocket it's there. Steel and sturdines are way over Gerber's - corksrew has never seen a vinebotle, but serves as a coat/backpack hanger "on the go" while camping. Warranty has no any small (font 3) text. U know what you buy...
I like gerber tools but honestly they need to have a 3 tool option. Call it the light or something. Need the arm bars screw driver set up, the one handed pliers from the multi tool, and solid knife or file/ pry bar option. Has to have a good pocket clip. Sorry I had to tell someone my idea because I only use those tools. Please price tool under $50. God bless!
Gerber Armbar, very useful tool but in my opinion needs two things to be "perfect" - locking mechanism for bit holder and a better steel for the blade so to have a better edge retention. Maybe Gerber will take a look.
I've had an armbar for a year and change now. It stays in my bag along with a 1/4 driver kit. The driver alone has come in handy enough to justify the cost. I added a small clip to a ring on the armbar to secure it on my pocket, but mostly it just stays in my bag. The metal on the blade is terrible. Might as well be aluminum; it dulls after any task more extreme than opening envelopes and cutting tape on packages. Seriously, plan on needing to resharpen if you open a plastic clamshell package.
All I’ve been wanting is a few good quality folders. One that takes box cutter blades, with a choil so you can choke up (maybe maybe a version with out it.) And a slip joint version as it would be perfect for some areas. Im shocked no one has yet tbh? And I’ve been Wanting a one handed opening Swiss Army knife (3” blade.) or knife styled like it for so long now. The Swiza’s are hard to get in my area. And other options are two handed. The Boker Tech tools would be amazing they are a modern take on the SAK and just need a stud! Edit: isn’t the Rocky just a handle from a leather man?
So, it seems Gerber is still making their knives out of genuine "Butter Steel", which keeps an edge about as well as a stick of butter. This is why I haven't bought a Gerber knife in the last 25 years. Gerber hasn't made a good knife since the late 1970s or early 1980s. I still have one of the old Gerber sheath knives I bought in the late 1970s that has a blade of some kind of tool steel with a metal handle that has a non-slip grey coating. Now THAT is a good knife! It has been used to gut and skin a huge number of deer and elk (not just mine, but those of hunting partners and friends who have called me to help when they had game to process). I still use that Gerber knife occasionally, though I have a number of custom and semi-custom knives to use now. The Gerber knives I've bought since that old metal handled beauty haven't been worth the powder to blow them to hell. They sit in some box somewhere in my garage and I could give a damn about them. Unless their steel quality changes, I'll never buy another Gerber knife. Gerber has nice knife and tool designs, but unless the blade steel is right, they aren't worth a damn.
On Amazon in Sweden it's listed for 65$ a bit pricey if you ask me on the other hand we don't have the rocktol 12 only the full sized leatherman copy and that is only 55$ go figure.
Although I have and have had several hundred knives throughout my life, I have never had a SAK. They just don’t interest me. I have had a few Leathermans though. Currently still rocking the Wave. Oh, I did watch the whole video and give a 👍🏻, as always.😊
I bought a Rocktol and discovered that the tools are very difficult to deploy. Very tight tools rubbing against another. I tried machine oil and loosen the screw holding the tools together, but that did not help. My least favorite pocket tool so far.
Check out the Roxon KS2 Elite. ALL tools lock. D2 blade. All one handed (minus the substantial scissors) Saw and tweezers. I daily it now over a victorinox.
i use a squirt PS4 on my key chain, i find that i use the plyers the most so it would be hard to give up. although i might try one of these bit driver tools for a while since the screwdriver aspect ia also used fairly regularly. in my opinion for around the house EDC victorinox isnt the king since its main focus is the blade and not the plyers/screwdriver. However when in the outdoors i much prefer my victorinox rangergrip 75 over any other multitool i own, mostly because of the insanely good saw blade on the biggest victorinox models
When it comes to this style of small multi tool knife. I think it matters a lot which one are you really gona carry. Cause if you won’t carry it with you it won’t do you any good
So if i understood, the driver is better on the gerber and everything else is sub level of the rock? I have the Chinese rock style it is harder to find replacement bits with the ball-d10. Frankly though i would carry something with pliers as well if i am going to have a knife.
it would be really cool if leatherman made their version of this. Sort of like that skeletool knife they made awhile back. Gerber needs a real knife guy on their team bad! They have good ideas, they just constantly fall short with some sort of major flaw!
I think the armbar is very overpriced for what you get. I bought one and returned it immediately. The quality was terrible, scissors and knife were awful. The bit driver was decent but way too expensive for the quality
G'day Aaron, yeah, "no name" blade steel in particular, is a worry, .... though, I do like that this one has fewer tools, ..... and those I'd actually use. Saw, albeit on the short side, ...... tick If you're gonna have one at all, ... a magnetic bit driver with a longer shank....... tick. A locking "in line" awl is a winner, ........ well, locking everything is highly desirable IMO. Mind you, an unlocked bit driver is often useful @ 90 deg or other angle. Btw; given their inherent nature, i.e. the blocky, and very non-symmetrical, shape of multitools, how about a ratchet driver. I've seen some very, very small such mechanisms around in recent years ..... just a thought. Incidentally, one item I never see/hear mentioned, is a Victorinox belt clip. Clips onto just about any material as well, say track pants for example, or even boxer shorts and briefs .......... if that's your MO; .....sure, nudists will need a strap, or lanyard, of some description, regardless ...... but hey, even then, it can still be made to work ; ) Seriously though, ...... the beauty of it, on belt, is .... easy, (but very secure), mount/dismount design and the knife/multitool simply dangles vertically in the pocket on a small spring clip, i.e. the weight is on the belt, .... and without a more bulky holster, ... you hardly know it's there. (In fairness I don't mind a good holster either). It's great for keys also, not sure one would be carry'n those around in a holster ; ) Looks quite classy too IMO, sure beats the carabiner I was using previously anyway ; ) Not unreasonably expensive either, think I paid 20-25-ish knicker AUD some years back, (around 12-15 USD). So..... obviously, ..... I'm a fan, ..... main point is, after all that, maybe others would be too. Cheers Duke.
Annoying that Gerber added a clip to Trade and Scout, but Drive is still without it. I got a Drive because it has scissors. But well, I've added my own pocket clip and DIY thumb stud. Also, you can store extra bit in it. Also I think Armbar got way too much hate from reviewers for non locking screwdriver. Yeah, it would be nice, but still capable tool for many.
I reviewed the Rocktol on my review channel and it had a flaw and this was the second Rocktol tool I purchased (the Wave clone) and second time Rocktol has failed me
I just tried ordering this and amazon will not deliver this to my house in New York. Apparently this is a weapon of mass destruction. But eBay or AliExpress or Temu? No problem
I don’t like gerber.. their warranty did get me another knife after I emailed them like 11 times telling them how crap they are.. and Swiss Army knife is the same, they are gimmicky. A staple for most of us growing up but besides the blade and tweezers and ( tooth pick ) aka charging port cleaner, the awl and drivers are helpful, the key ring they include as a tool and the hook that they say can carry a grocery bag is a waste, when they cost 20 for the cheapest at most use the scissors for nose hairs, and way up in price, I don’t think a 15$ price jump is justified for a single tool unless it’s for your heavy duty work tool, which SAK isn’t it’s light task oriented.
The saw on the Armbar Trade is awful and the scissors on the Armbar cut are also pretty terrible. The knife on the Armbar is legit the worst I've ever used as I'm not even a steel snob. It's basically a $50 mini screw driver which is about $30 too much in my opinion. The Rocktool looks cool though might check that out soon. For now the Explorer is the urban EDC and the Farmer X is the outdoor EDC.
Id avoid the Rocktool. Too much of a Leatherman copy, like theyve just ripped an arm off a Charge. Clever toolset but at least SAK and Gerber come up with thier own stuff.
The thing that annoys the hell out of me is gerbers blade steel on there lower and mid range knifes and tools. I don't understand why people still buy there chinesium garbage knifes. I do like the arm bar design.
I've had more Gerbers fail than any other knife I've owned that wasn't a cheap beater. I won't buy them anymore. I own at least 10 different SAKs across all the kits I have and EDC a Compact as my secondary. Btwn SAK and Leatherman, I mean, really, Gerber is never the better option.
Best bit driver, no argument here. Was hoping to hear that 2.0 was better than their typical pot steel and poor quality. IMO, Gerber has good ideas and poor execution.
The Armbar’s bottle opener becomes loose too easy, then the tool becomes unstable. Even if you tighten it, after a while it is not reliable. I had two already, and will not go for them again. Quality is simply inferior.

The “bottle opener” on the gerber also makes a great paint can opener, and the hammer helps tap the lids back down. I’ve done that a few times

Clips onto just about any material as well, say track pants for example, or even boxer shorts and briefs .......... if that's your MO; .....sure, nudists will need a strap, or lanyard, of some description, regardless ...... but hey, even then, it can still be made to work ; )
Seriously though, ...... the beauty of it, on belt, is .... easy, (but very secure), mount/dismount design and the knife/multitool simply dangles vertically in the pocket on a small spring clip, i.e. the weight is on the belt, .... and without a more bulky holster, ... you hardly know it's there. (In fairness I don't mind a good holster either).
It's great for keys also, not sure one would be carry'n those around in a holster ; )
Looks quite classy too IMO, sure beats the carabiner I was using previously anyway ; )
Not unreasonably expensive either, think I paid 20-25-ish knicker AUD some years back, (around 12-15 USD).
So..... obviously, ..... I'm a fan, ..... main point is, after all that, maybe others would be too.
Cheers Duke.
Now do the Armbar scout
Annoying that Gerber added a clip to Trade and Scout, but Drive is still without it. I got a Drive because it has scissors. But well, I've added my own pocket clip and DIY thumb stud. Also, you can store extra bit in it. Also I think Armbar got way too much hate from reviewers for non locking screwdriver. Yeah, it would be nice, but still capable tool for many.
I really like my armbar cork, mb I have more wine than the average person
I reviewed the Rocktol on my review channel and it had a flaw and this was the second Rocktol tool I purchased (the Wave clone) and second time Rocktol has failed me
Still no damn lock on the Armbar driver !
Goodbye knuckles if you're pressing on that screw....SIGH
I’ve been wanting an Armbar for a while, but none of them seem to cover what I want.
Yes some of the tools are weirdly combined
@@gideonstactical that was fast
I just tried ordering this and amazon will not deliver this to my house in New York. Apparently this is a weapon of mass destruction. But eBay or AliExpress or Temu? No problem
Hahah that is so dump 🤣
Not for me. Leather skeletool cx with micra scissors on my keychain.
Why did they put a saw i.stead of a scissors
I got two words: Leatherman Free.
Rocktol hands down.
I need an armbar with a blade, driver arm and pliers
Still made in china. I'll stick to my SAK
The gerber armbar uses
Still no lock on the bitdriver… :-(
Gerber has become trash I have broken 3 of them.
The thing that annoys the hell out of me is gerbers blade steel on there lower and mid range knifes and tools. I don't understand why people still buy there chinesium garbage knifes. I do like the arm bar design.
I went with the Trade. 💯 Better.
I carry 23 bits in my pouch.
Wow!!
The original armbar mt is utter trash. So maybe I’ll try this one.
Best bit driver, no argument here. Was hoping to hear that 2.0 was better than their typical pot steel and poor quality. IMO, Gerber has good ideas and poor execution.
Do not talk, SHOW to us ALL !
rly gerber , not one single version with a file ? instead of a sissor
👍
SAK's are toys for children.
No
The Armbar’s bottle opener becomes loose too easy, then the tool becomes unstable. Even if you tighten it, after a while it is not reliable. I had two already, and will not go for them again. Quality is simply inferior.
Leatherman is the only multitool worth buying. Everything else is just a gimmick pocket decoration
It’s 8cr13mov
I am not sure about that, I think it’s 3cr or 7CR all I know is it dulls really fast.
More scandal!😱
Haha 🤣
Still no pliers.....
Boy I was about to unsubscribe before you said you were joking.
Haha!! Gotcha 😉
