This has to be one of the most terrifying skydive malfunctions I've seen in a while, and our friend Marcos dealt with the situation incredibly well! We now have more info (and HD video) about this incident:
Marcos had a hard pull and his pilot chute was still stuck in the BOC when he pulled his reserve (it was not a pilot chute in tow). As the reserve deployed, the steel rapide link on his riser breaks, causing his reserve parachute to malfunction. Luckily he didn't cutaway before pulling his reserve - he was able to manually deploy his main parachute to add more fabric above his head. He fights the spinning malfunction all the way to the ground and after a seemingly hard landing, he stands up and gives a thumbs-up to a concerned driver passing by. What a trooper!
After speaking with a few riggers about this incident, it sounds like both soft links and steel rapide links are still commonly used, but here are a few benefits with soft links: they never bend, they never crack, there's no barrel to loosen up and they're twice as strong as rapide links.
Just some food for thought and worth discussing with your rigger.
Glad you're still with us Marcos! Stay awesome and stay safe.

jack black that’s not what happened. His main didn’t deploy. Only the droge chute came out so he pulled his reserve. After he pulled his reserve the main then came out which created a nasty two out deployment. You can’t manually pull out a chute. As it’s too far behind your back. That’s why you rely on a droge chute. If you could manually pull out chutes then horseshoe malfunctions would not be a thing

Friggin' scary stuff! can't believe they still use rapide links. Must be a very old rig he used there. Indeed food for thought! If I would have had rapide links in my rig, after watching this, they would be gone tomorrow. No questions asked. Good job getting that main canopy out! Carrying a hook knife may be not a bad idea after all...

You're right! It's not mandatory where I jump but I do carry one normally but I lost it twice. On one occasion a jump mate saw it fall out when climbing out and handed it back on the ground. For a beer of course... But sometimes I wonder how easy it would be to drop it when you're trying to get it out of the mud flap in a high stresss situation

they probably use them because they have been working for the last 40 years or so. Just like guns, its not the links its the people

is there a way to pack a parachute so that this is a physical impossibility if airspeed is fast enough?

What is the rapide link and why would it break??

    • @yarpos
      @yarpos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

rapide link is a metal oval shaped link that joins to canopy lines to the risers (the broad black pieces that form part of the harness.
Its amost unheard of that they break, however they can be not assembled properly (either loose or overtightened) I have only seen one incident when a guy landed on his main and as soon as tension came off all his lines on one risers fell off. On inspection the barell nut was undone and link has bent out to an open hook joining lines and riser. It was just lucky he didnt do anything radical under canopy. It was a long spot, so traight line back and land in still weather.
These days an alternative approach is to use soft links to do the same job. Considered superior by many, especially the generations that never saw decades of rapid link use. We all like what we are familiar with.

If he would have been cut the main canopy as in the instructions, i am wondering: if there would be any possible way to resolve the malfunction of the reserve canopy? How it could be done?

It also looked as though he had two broken lines on the reserve

    Wow, that sucked.

So pretty much a normal static line landing lol

And this is why I will not cut away an un-deployed main before deploying a reserve...

Isn't that more risky? Obviously not in this case lol but wont that increase the risk of the bad main interfering with the reserve? I don't jump so I'm just curious.

You're not supposed to pull reserve until you cut main schute

Now imagine jumping with a sub 100 main canopy, bye bye legs.
