    WOW. I’ve seen & heard so many renditions of this song and always secretly favored Sara’s, there was always something where I was like ‘nah… I liked it better the way Sara does that part’ and when she started I was expecting to feel the same…. And then she blew me away. Wow wow wow. Thanks for sharing this.

    I thought she did really well. I like her interpretation. She’s captivating. I was moved by her delivery. Her rendition is one of my favorite among hundreds on TH-cam.

    I came not knowing what to expect, because I remember in previous comments people kept asking about you reacting to this, and you had reservations, so I never expected to see it here. I gotta say as a super fan of Morissette (My love and respect for her knows no bounds) and super fan of Broadway (started with Annie in 3rd grade lol and once found myself backstage during a 3 month run of "The King and I' at my Citys theater where my daughter played "Princess ying Yaowalak") I walked away from this reaction with thoughtfulness and it didn't get my heart rate up ,or get me defensive lol. I think having a healthy knowledge about all things Morissette and a personal love for Broadway helps me here. Many may not know, but her Managers are heavily linked to Musical theater in the Phillipines. Pop is actually not their Wheelhouse. She's got some grounding there. I'm the type of Broadway fan (if there is a type) that I HAVE to have exceptional vocals AND exceptional embodiment of the character. If the Vocals are lacking I just can't deal, because I didn't pay all that money to see a play. I paid for a musical (so please bring the vocals) you cannot act your way out of subpar vocals for me (again that is just me). Therefore she satisfies me here in full given the circumstances. (I get your contention with the trappings of the circumstances as well ,but everyone did the best they could during that time heck still are, we're still zooming out here ). When we saw this performance "live" (by that I mean when it premiered.) It was one song in a series of Broadway selections, so she'd talk then sing. It is tough from her stand point (and you touched on this). She's centering herself in and out of a range of emotions and characters. In this session she went from Jenna to Kim (Miss Saigon) , to Grisabella (Cats) to Lucy (Jekyll & Hyde) to name a few. I also appreciate you pointing out the limitations of a track vs live accompaniment ! I wish more people understood that, not just here, but just period when people are performing.
    I'm again long winded ,but I'll wrap this up by saying , this song is just some of the BEST writing for a musical hands down! I remember Sara saying when asked about how this song has taken on a life of it's own. (It's been sung by Men, Little kids, Gospel singers in cafes you name it!) She said her songs are like her babies and she wants all her babies to have long lives. I'm proud my Girl Morissette is part of that link.

      Terri, it sounds like you and I had a nearly identical reaction to his analysis. One could argue whether he should have framed his reaction a bit differently to consider that this was a pop singer interpreting a Broadway song in a pop style, but I understand that he functions within the musical theatre world, and I certainly respect and appreciate that. I thought his analysis was thoughtful and fair for the lens he chose to look through. And boy did he have a point about those pop-ups -- so annoying! The worst one had to be when a Lion King factoid popped up *right* at the high point of Someone Like You 🤦🏻‍♀️😖

    9:15 I think you misunderstood that. She wasn't looking at herself. There wasn't a monitor there. She's at home. 'Twas a lock down there. Barely any equipment.
    It's like she was looking away as if she's looking back to something that's kind of bittersweet while telling someone about it.
    --
    Although I know it's a hard and emotional song, there are a few moments where the character was looking back to something that WAS good. She's remembering how her life was when she was younger, before all the shit went down so there were little smiles.
    Idk the entire story of the waitress, but based on just the lyrics, I think she was doing just fine there.
    At least that's how I see it.
    I love this reaction by the way. Very thorough and honest 💯💯💯

    Marc, thank you for your thoughtful reaction to Morissette’s rendition but I listened to the original and I like Morissette’s version better. Given the circumstances, she sang this at the convenience of her own home during the lockdown, via zoom for her fans. This is her own interpretation of the song WITHOUT a theater coach. And you yourself reacted with tears at the end. Somehow the delivery of the song moved you. You said you always tear up when you hear this song… it is NOT the song the made you cry. It was the way it was sung and delivered by the artist that made you tear up!!!! And I am disappointed you did not acknowledge that. Listen to “Could you be Messiah” a song written by Gary Valenciano, rearranged and given to Morissette to sing.

  • @SvMykolas

    This performance is absolutely great and outstanding, technically and emotionally. I feel every note and word Morissette sings. If you compare it to the original singer Morissette is so much more emotionally connected and transporting those emotions. Even Mr. Patrick felt it obviously, but, as with Defying Gravity, he has already decided before he even started listening to Morissette, that her rendition can't be as good. Some people talk about honesty. But honesty has nothing to do with prejudice. My opinion.

    I think you sold yourself the idea of the artists looking at herself and reacting to that. To me, her expressions seemed real and reflected what I would expect from an internal dialogue, including the wry and self condemnatory smiles. But I suppose it's in the eye of the beholder and perhaps it's just that I have more to chastise myself about than do you :) so that's what I perceive.

    • @BoraViolin

      I agree with you , the smile that you is not out of character because, as a person, i sometimes smiles at my own silliness i smile but it does not mean i am happy. Morisette interprepation gets me, i can feel it, i understand the song. The way she interprets the song is of a woman who were able to rise up and become stronger and to convey that emotion to the listener the way she did it is amazing

    • @javierperez7105
      @javierperez7105 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I completely agree!!!!!! I mean he is a profesional and went to college for this, but I feel like he is sticking only to what he knows and his comfort area and that area is musical theater. Most of the Broadway versions seem to Over acted and almost suicidal to me in my opinion 🙃. Yes is at a point where she is at her lowest but she is also reflecting on her life, the good memories and what she used to be not just the bad moments. Sometimes I even smile while I'm crying and make myself questions like "why am I like this? Why is this happening to me? Why am I so ridiculous" just cause I smile doesn't mean I'm happy. Those parts that she smiled and even smirked actually fit with the lyrics. Is a different take on what we see on Broadway, she doesn't have to be crying and screaming to reflect on how disappointed she is of the woman she sees in the mirror, that she is not the woman she used to be. Is not the first time that he makes comments that make me feel a certain type of way. Is his profesional opinion and I respect it very much, but If he actually thinks that musical theater is super super strict and that it has to always be portrayed the exact same way and it can't be changed, then he should perform in an opera or direct an opera. Opera is the mother of singing and is super super strict with its music and the way the performer should sing it and how he or she should portrayed it. I should know I did a double bachelor in classical music with a specialty in Vocal techniques. All I am saying is that he is way to harsh when someone doesn't portray or sings something the way musical stars do it, he should have a more open mind and just enjoy the music and performance even if is not what he is used to, but he is very well knowledge and know his craft very well, is just my opinion.

    • @javierperez7105
      @javierperez7105 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @98765qaz cs Yeah I could, in general she has a very solid technic! Amazing breath support, amazing placement in her center, passagio, belts and upper belts. She has areas just like everyone that she could work on, like she is still developing her headvoice cause the placementcould use a little bit of work, she has great access to it but sometimes she uses falsetto instead of headvoice and is not her complete comfort zone. Her lower range has gotten much better and fuller but still could use some work, she tends to Over darken her voice and pinch her larynx a little to get to the low tenor and baritone notes and that's something that most singers do like mariah and many others, her whistle is great but sometimes she has problems with the pitch and placement and it becomes very strident on the ear sometimes, but is still great and impressive part of her voice. I could say many other things but in general, she has a very solid technics in basically every part of her voice and she keeps getting better. She is learning to mix her upper belts with a more balanced mix and putting a little bit of head in it, cause she was trying to bring all that chest voice up till a G#5 and it's posible but is not healthy and she is finally learning to mix and that's why in 2020 and 2021 we have had so many G5, G#5 and even 3 A5. I love to talk about vocal techniques. I could write a whole essay about he qualities of her voice.

She's performing a beautiful song and doing it very well. She definitely misses some of the emotion though. Hi Juf, I‘ve heard and seen a lot of versions to this song. One of the „most best“ performances to me was Sarah (live) and Shoshana Beans. I personally do not compare the performances on a minute level, but more on the feeling the artist evokes in me. It‘s very important, that the artist has his own and very gentle emotion and interpretation into his performance. So it‘s not important to be perfect in any sense, it is important to be authentic to the very moment. I love to wish you to find a interpretation which suits your intimate understanding of the song.

    I don’t think she was looking at herself in the beginning, at least not consciously. She was looking away from the camera in order to just focus on the character. Kind of the equivalent of when we close our eyes at the beginning of a song to get into the character of the lyrics. I could see from the look on her face that she was seeing the characters and situation and not seeing anything in the present moment in front of her.

    • @Rosannasfriend
      @Rosannasfriend 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      But you’re right about the other times that she’s looking at herself I think. But like you said, she can’t help it with the set up. Human nature. I think she did a pretty decent job in spite of it. Funnily enough, it’s this reaction that made me more appreciative of her performance.

    • @Rosannasfriend
      @Rosannasfriend 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I also see your point about not trying to sound perfect on this song. If you look at Jessie Mueller… The first actress to play the character on Broadway… And she’s not trying to sound pretty. She’s very gritty and raspy, but still sounds fantastic. She is focused on the emotions and being the character. But she was in the actual play, I think somebody who is just giving a performance for her fans online can be given a different set of rules.

    Its the cold, empty environment she is in, that perhaps, limits your appeal, I really don't think, she is looking at a monitor other than to make sure focus is staying true . During the quarantine, she began doing many livestreams, merely using her cell as her cam source so , doubt highly, she really cared what she looked like. TA-GAL-OG is her first language or it might even be Bisaya, but when she sings in English, you can't hear an accent, and her annunciation is something she has worked on ,( which I believe in theatre, you want and expect) , as you would see on other songs....be them pop, ballads, gospel, her mouth movement is precise and not lazy ( sure those that read lips, would agree) Lets just say this.....if I saw a marquee on Broadway saying....featuring Morissette, I'd be buying a ticket.

    Excellent analysis Marc. Wasn’t sure how I felt about her rendition but it grew on me. I hear a lot of Moresette’s pop voice in this song but her tiny inflections and cracks were perfect for this song. And I agree with you Marc, a live piano player would allow her to breathe and fully embrace this character. Can you please review a song from Miss Saigon. Thanks

    Now I understand why I somehow felt there is something awkward here, some distraction that happens within her and that's probably because of the mirror. There are moments where she is self-conscious, again probably when she's checking in the mirror.

    Hello Mark, I like this new format of reacting to the song as a whole first then going to the breakdown and analysis, it kinda made me feel that we are 2 friends listening to the same song at the same time then goes to discuss everything about it. This way makes it feel more casual and organic. Thank you for the great content.

    Thanks for the reaction Marc. The slight gatekeeping is understandable as this was more of a crossover performance and, she said herself, a bit out of her comfort zone (she’s not walking through Seth’s door for an episode of Obsessed anytime soon). Although, if you consider all the songs posted in this Stages set as a whole, the quality of the performances are quite spectacular for someone who only dabbles in showtunes.
    Full list here for anyone interested:
    th-cam.com/play/PLXIsyucEqcmEXwaPcZRCVoQHGZkW08PYX.html
    ‘Home’, ‘Memory’, ‘Someone Like You’, ‘She Used To Be Mine’, ‘I’d Give My Life For You’, and ‘Defying Gravity’.
    In the intro for ‘I’d Give My Life For You’ she mentioned that she had recently seen Joanna Ampil (West End star and 10th Anniversary Kim, Miss Saigon) play Jessie in the Manila production of ‘The Waitress’ so I’m sure there was some inspiration drawn from there. She refers to Joanna as ‘big sister’ (they were co-leads in an original Filipino musical together in 2015 (Chuva Choo Choo)).
    Morissette also has a connection to Lea Salonga as Lea was one of the coaches when she was a contestant on The Voice (Philippines) in 2013.
