I actually grew up in the neighboring school district to Adrian and the story is one of his voice lesson recordings went viral. It was eventually seen by Sara Bareilles herself and she is the one who invited him to Broadway. Coming from a very small town in the countryside of Pennsylvania it was quite a big deal. This was probably 5 years ago when he was 12-13 years old.
He is from not far from me either. My sister first sent me a video of him years ago singing this song. She worked with his mother. What a beautiful voice!
Actually, Adrian Matthew Escalona is a Filipino by blood but living in Pennsylvania! He went viral after this performance when his mother shared that video to her FB account! After that somebody came to his house and invited him to perform in another show.
Jeremy meant no harm. He’s really good friends with the guy who was organizing the songs and so as any best friend would, he suggested one of the longest, highest, most difficult to add in acting choices songs Celine sang. When he says ridiculous, he means in the sense of Ben (his friend I was talking about) suggesting the song, knowing how much of a story teller Jeremy is when singing. He literally cannot sing anything without using some sort of physical interpretation. There is a clip of him recording a song with Eden Espinosa for the tangled series where he literally could not sit still. There were hand motions everywhere. His sense of “meaning” in this case is theatrical purposes. Dialogue, monologue, conversation, world building. Jeremy just really gets into character. And It’s totally fine if Jeremy can’t connect to the character or have the same interpretation of the song as you. So saying “if Jeremy didn’t have the emotional or mental capacity to understand” was just not right and unfair. It sounds like you’re stuck in your own mindset and can’t accept someone else’s opinion which is very selfish.
I've watched this video with Jeremy Jordan a number of times (I'm a fan of his from watching him on Supergirl) and I felt that at the start he wasn't so much detached from the song as portraying a person who is holding back the pain and anger that breaks through by the end. Maybe portraying the awkwardness of moment, Jenna remembering how she used to be. I watched another reactor who is a musical theatre coach talk about the little gestures he makes as helping to show that, and just giving him something to do with his hands to keep the moment fresh and interesting. The start of this song reminds me of a person maybe standing up to tell about their experience with some situation, and right at first they're nervous and fidgety, and speak softly, and as they get more into the story they speak with more conviction, more loudly, less awkwardly. That's what I'm seeing here.
Have you seen/heard Jeremy's songs from the Tangled animated series? I know you have a complicated relationship with Jeremy Jordan but you can't deny that he has a great voice! I think you might be interested in "Nothing Left To Lose" at least, it's a duet between Jeremy's and Eden Espinosa's characters.
th-cam.com/video/FePY4q5SLoA/w-d-xo.html Original viral video of Adrian's. WHAT a kid, and his might very well be my favorite rendition, male or female. It's just so heartfelt.
I really loved your reactions to all the songs. Thank you for reacting to Gavin Creel -- I hadn't heard of him before, and I LOVED his performance, so now I'm going to look him up and watch more of his work. :) Jumping in front of you to react to Mark McMullen (sorry!) Didn't care that much for his performance, even though he has a gorgeous voice (and yes, he's extremely good-looking) -- there wasn't the vulnerability that I think this piece needs. He goes full volume for almost the whole piece, and I think he would have benefitted from pulling back some. Maybe that's what I was trying to say about Jeremy Jordan's performance (see my comment below) -- there was a vulnerability to it that seemed so well placed. Okay, now I'm going to go watch the rest of the video and see what you have to say about it. 😉 ETA: Aha! You agreed with me! You're so smart! Just for that I'm going to subscribe.😊
I understand what you mean about musical theater singers tapping into emotion rather than feeling it due to their training, however I feel like if they really felt it, it would be hard to get through the song. I TOTALLY would have done what Kelly Clarkson did on American Idol with Piece By Piece. There are times when I am singing just all by myself and something hits me in the feels and I just can't sing anymore. I am not a trained singer but I am very emotional. Just my thoughts. I like your analysis of these singers. They were all fantastic and different from each other even though it was the same song. I honestly had not heard this song before. I was a little over musical-ed in my younger years so I haven't really seen/ heard any in a while. This is a beautiful song. It kind of feels like me.
Exactly! I sob singing this song. I also know what it's like to feel detached from the "little girl" inside that just wanted to dream and have a happy life before reality came in and jaded me. Thank you for sharing this.
There’s no doubt Jeremy Jordan is an accomplished performer but sorry this version left me cold. I didn’t believe him at all. It felt like he was just singing in a lesson. No emotion at all.
@@royalty4958 You can say his performance made you feel a different way and that to you it had emotion but you don’t get to say my feelings and how it made me feel is a lie!
@@AbiRobinson Its definitely subjective but to state that his performance was cold and all that he was doing was singing is incredibly disingenuous. Plus you stated that it had no emotion at all and now you're back tracking and saying it does. So either you changed your mind, you're lying or just being contradictory.
@@royalty4958 You just summed it up, it’s subjective. To me it left ME cold, and had no emotion to ME. I repeat, you don’t get to say that how a performance makes ME feel is not true. @@AbiRobinson However it makes you feel, if you step back and look at the performance outside your own opinion, there is no way you can say this had no emotion without an example from his performance itself. What about it was cold to you because from the acting to the hand placement to the gradual build in his voice it had alot of emotion. Theatre teachers, vocal coaches and just reactors in general share this sentiment. So what about his performance gives you the feeling that it was cold and emotionless. Have you seen Luke Islam's version? He sung it at 12 years old on AGT. Incredible!
